Tackling the higher education needs of Kenya by the establishment of a private university franchise

Drew, Christopher N. J. January 2009 (has links)
It is now generally accepted that to enable developing countries to compete in the global economy and be in control of their own destiny, the development of higher education (HE) should be a vital part of policy. The Kenyan economy is at a tipping point where skilled graduates are required but a lack of funding for HE means that only a small number of students are entering university each year. The aspirations of increasing numbers of qualified students are not being met. Without exploiting the potential of its population Kenya will remain impoverished. At the time of writing this thesis the Kenyan Government had no policy for increasing access to HE. This thesis focuses on tackling this dilemma by establishing a private university franchise operation in Kenya in partnership with London University utilising Information Communication Technologies (ICTs) and blended learning. The thesis utilises a case study of such a private HE college in Kenya in partnership with the University of London External Programme. I have been tasked with the management of the design, implementation and evaluation of the institution. The research field contains little assessment of the processes and outcomes of franchised HE in developing countries in Africa. The thesis aims to make a contribution to the research field in this regard. This thesis also looks at the process of creating a blended learning environment from initial problem analysis, through design and development, to implementation and evaluation. It draws on research literature and empirical work including interviews, diaries and questionnaires involving both staff and students. By outlining achievements, challenges, tensions and pitfalls it is hoped that the thesis can have a practical and professional significance and that insights can be drawn for HE institutions and policy makers in developing countries.

Operating Efficiency Evaluation Study of Faculties in Private University -A Case Study of Certain Medical University

Hsu, Fang-Yih 30 August 2010 (has links)
In recent years, domestic high education institutions encounter the difficulty of decrease in numbers of enrolling students and increase in number of schools, which is resulted from the trend of less newborn children and more loosing governmental policy by Ministry of Education. In such environments, the private schools encounter high pressure of seeking sufficient enrolling students and more competition among schools. Therefore, management of private schools should focus on increasing efficiency of operating organization so private schools can be developed with more competition in the future. How to operate and allocate available resources and to achieve educational goals become the most important topics for school management. Schools are Non-Profit Organization and this thesis is intended to evaluate the relative efficiency of faculties of colleges or universities with Data Envelopment Analysis¡]DEA¡^, which is popular methods for researches regarding Non-Profit Organization. It includes the CCR model and BCC model and selects 4 input items and 3 output items as evaluation indicators. The thesis employed the DEA model in the case study to evaluate the Overall Efficiency, Pure Technical Efficiency and Scale Efficiency of school faculties and performed slack variable analysis to inefficient faculties to obtain inefficiency reasons and provide further improvements. The case study in this thesis was performed with efficiency evaluation on 19 faculties of certain medical university based on the information of fiscal year of 2008. The results were as below: 1.Overall Efficiency: In the case study, 7 faculties are relatively inefficient, representing 37% of population. This means that over 1/3 of total population is inefficient. 2.Pure Technical Efficiency: In the case study, 3 faculties have no pure technical efficiency, representing 16% of population. The negative result is less than overall efficiency, which implies that the inefficiency may be caused by scale inefficiency. 3.Scale Efficiency: In the case study, 7 faculties have no scale efficiency, representing 37% of population. Such faculties need to adjust their scales to reach the overall efficiency. This thesis also provided the improvement suggestions for inefficient faculties and operation strategies for management.

The Relationship between Operating Performance and Financial Indicators - The Empirical Analysis of the Private Universities in Taiwan

Huang, Ru-Shuang Unknown Date (has links)
Higher education system has developed for a long time all round the world. It is the most factors for fostering talents for employment and advanced research. The quality of teaching and student at universities are facing challenges that needed to improve urgently. While the enrollment population of students in higher education grows rapidly, it is very necessary urgently to clarify the mounting controversy: how to improve the operating performance of a university according to its financial statement, quantity data, and the information related to the operating performance. With the decreasing birth rate in recent years, the quantity of universities and colleges has enlarged rapidly, added to the other factors, private universities will be in a terrible situation that no sufficient students to stand their business sooner or later. We intend in the thesis to find out ways to enhance the quality of higher education by integrating educational resources and testifying the statistical methods. This paper emphasize on the magnitude of operating those private universities with efficient performance. Chapter 1 is the introduction including the background, motives, and objectives of the research. Chapter 2 deals with the review of literature, whereby related the literatures overseas were be discussed. Chapter 3 focuses on the research methods adopted. Chapter 4 is the analysis of the empirical results, and conducted for the establishment of the model. Chapter 5 presents the conclusion and suggestions for further research. The study based on the disclosed financial information of the 24 private universities. The conducted variables used to test the relation can be divided into four categories: the operating assets approach, the revenue approach, the expenditure approach, the teaching-quality approach. There are financial ratio and non financial independent variables selected for consideration in this field. There are 19 explained variables in details, and current surplus (SUR) is the only dependent variable as a whole. This study yielded limited information about the operating performances of higher education. The objective of this research is to seek and find out the explanatory power of the independent variables for financial performance indicators. To the conclusion, the roads to improve the operating performance of these private universities still have taken time. It is better to eliminate the lower-quality universities from the assessment of operating performance

The study is justified by the fact that it can expose how foreign teachers face the teaching of own challenges today, in addition to cultural and linguistic differences, however, in the face of these situations remains If the activity. Although considerable foreign number in Brazilian university teaching, systematic studies on the working reality of these professionals are scarce. Therefore, to understand the univers e of these teachers, the research was based on the Theory of Social Representations to subsidize what are the representation of the profession and elements that lead these individuals to identify themselves in teaching. In this sense, as a methodological resource semistructured interviews were conducted with teachers where they sought cover different nationalities, genders and areas of knowledge. Through the telling of the stories of teachers analysis categories were established to allow the point of teaching representation elements. Regarding the history of teachers, most approaches that further study was one of the factors that brought them to Brazil due to agreements signed with other countries. As the choice for teaching, the reports emphasize that the school experience, the figure of a teacher and admiration for the activity were decisive for the professional option establishing one of the first factors of social representation. Regarding the effective integration in higher education, there are teachers who have exercised the activity in their respective countries still at graduation, while others did after coming to Brazil to complete the studies. As for the work in the public and private universities note the distinction between the accounts and the significant factor of teaching of social representation. For private institutions of teacher education is what gives it greater representation, especially the work in the classroom and the relationship it has with the students. As for the teachers of public universities credited to work in the teaching-research-extension and active participation in the university as a means to see represented. Also among them, we conclude, foreign teachers find themselves recognized in the profession, which becomes a form of socialization also the working environment in their public and private universities influences the representation that give the work and social responsibility they assume.

The facilitation in the credit concession to individuals has increased over the last three years. Variables such as the reduction in the interest taxes, increase in maturity, payroll-attached loans, have provided the population in general, with access to consumption property, buildings among others. In this scenario, the search for stronger tools of credit risk analysis, trying to avoid or at least reduce the default rates in the field, has become necessary. This study aims at elaborating an econometric model to predict the probability of default risk in a Private University. By using the statistical technique of logistical regression, the credit risk model has been built based on a sample of students (individuals) enrolled at “Universidade Católica de Pelotas”, located in Pelotas/RS. The explaining variables of the model have been obtained from a socio-economical questionnaire, which has generated 59 variables from which, only 3 were really relevant: existence of previously negotiated debts, possession of a

My aim of research are teachers working in two private universities in São José dos Campos, the Universidade do Vale do Paraíba (UNIVAP) and the Universidade Paulista (UNIP). Among the universe of teachers of the private universities, it was chosen teachers of undergraduate courses of law, management and pedagogy. From this data and analysis of interviews with teachers, I tried to put in evidence not the actor himself but how the teacher s work is influenced by the institution where it is done. To accomplish this task I employ contributions of authors such as Brandão, Wanderley, Trindade and Cunha, that work with university development as a whole, without forget classical authors as Marx and Arendt, for theoretical basis I also discuss the contributions of researchers as Sampaio and Anastasiou and Pimenta, with emphasis the undergraduate private teaching and teaching skill in high level teaching respectively / Este estudo tem como foco principal de investigação a verificação da heterogeneidade da(s) prática(s) de trabalho do professor das universidades privadas.
