Housed and still hungry: barriers to food security for single adults with mental illness and/or problematic substance use living in supported housing on Vancouver Isalnd

Walsh, Judith Ruth 09 May 2016 (has links)
The purpose of this research is to examine the barriers to food security for single adults with mental illness and/or problematic substance use living in supported housing on Vancouver Island. The objectives are: (a) to examine the difference in the level of food security for tenants of supported housing neighbourhoods located in urban versus a rural community; (b) to examine the barriers to food access experienced by the tenants; and (c) to examine which barriers have the greatest effect on the tenants. Using an explanatory case study design, I employ a community-based research method with a social justice perspective as the framework. I have used an explanatory matrix to illustrate the tenant identified barriers to food security and the social structures that affect these barriers. As well, I have made recommendations for integrating food security services and programs into supported housing projects. I have argued that food security is a matter of public health and an integrative approach is needed. I am suggesting a shift on a larger policy scale, to promote the health and well-being of tenants in supported housing. An adequate holistic perspective with an integrated, long-term strategy linking all the determinants of health would result in health-in-all policies. This strategy could reduce the existing health inequities that the tenants in supported housing experience. / Graduate / judy@nahs.ca

Temperament dispositions, problematic eating behaviours, and overweight in adolescents

Walther, Mireille, Hilbert, Anja 28 June 2016 (has links) (PDF)
Obesity, a common health condition in adolescence leading to severe medical complications, is assumed to be influenced by temperament factors. This paper investigates associations between reactive and regulative temperament, problematic eating behaviours, and excess weight. Several self-report instruments were completed by 130 adolescents (mean age 14.13 ± 0.61 years), including 27 overweight and obese individuals (20.8%). Bootstrap analysis revealed a mediating effect of restrained eating on the relation between reactive temperament and body mass index percentile, which differed according to gender: Restrained eating, which predicted weight gain, was more present in girls having a higher sensitivity to reward and in boys showing a higher sensitivity to punishment. No effect of regulative temperament was found. These results have important implications for weight management programs, as they suggest that reducing restrained eating by working on temperament may help to control weight.

Restoring communication in problematic interpersonal relationships in the family system : a pastoral study / Omar Greyling Daniel Fourie

Fourie, Omar Greyling Daniel January 2010 (has links)
ill this study the interpersonal relationships and especially problematic communication within the family context is of paramount concern. The focus on communication, specifically in the family system, with a view to Biblically restoring communication in problematic interpersonal relationships gives the present study validity and value; this is especially true in the context of family systems in SOllth Africa. The family system in South Africa is under pressure and the. pastoral care giver is, subsequently, also under pressure to provide accurate counselling and intercession when needed to the family as a whole. This study aims to satisfY that need in focusing on restoring communication in problematic interpersonal relationships in the family system from a Bible-centred (Christian) perspective. The areas that the researcher investigated centred on communication in problematic interpersonal family relationships and the way in which communication problems in a particular family system may contribute to the potential problems that the family as a unit may have to cope with. The researcher worked with the hypothesis that problematic communiCation in interfamilial relationships may severely impede the family system in functioning as an allied unit against the pressures of life (for instance fmancial challenges, work stress). If family communication patterns were healthy or at least functional, the hypothesis is that all other problems that a family might face could be handled more easily by a family as an allied unit. The research question of this study is: How can families, with problematic interpersonal familial relationships, be counselled from a Biblical perspective with the primary objective of restoring communication in the family system? Can effective Bible-centred counselling guidelines be set down and developed from a study of family systems as depicted in Scripture, the human sciences and an empirical study in order to restore communication in problematic interpersonal relationships in the family system? This study shows that problematic communication in interfamilial relationships does impede the family system from functioning effectively. Interpersonal relationships in the family system is often complex and communication is only one element present in those relationships which can have a detrimental effect on good family relationships if communication is strained. The overarching research aim of the study was to obtain, develop and put forth Bible-centered praxis-theoretical guidelines on restoring communication in family systems caught up in problematic interpersonal relationships. The conclusion of this study is that families with problematic interpersonal familial relationships can be effectively counselled from a Biblical perspective with the aid of material from the human sciences with the primary objective of restoring communication in the family system. / Thesis (M.A. (Pastoral))--North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2010

The Impact of Unresolved Loss on Adolescent Anger and Defiant Behavior

Myers, Janell 08 1900 (has links)
This study examines the impact of issues of loss on adolescents. It was hypothesized that adolescents who experienced incidents of loss which were not adequately supported or processed to the point of resolution are much more likely to exhibit more angry and defiant behaviors than those who did not have such life experiences. Three instruments were used to identify loss and related impact. The first is the Interview Process, designed to identify issues of loss and screen for problematic behavior. This tool is used to qualify the participant for the study, and to designate which study group the participant will be assigned. The Family Constellation Exercise is an experiential assessment tool that exemplifies how emotionally close or distant the participant feels in relation to his or her nuclear family members. The Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Assessment - Adolescent version (MMPI-A) is used to identify behaviors and thought patterns associated with anger and defiance. The study was able to conclude that there is a strong potential for unresolved loss to negatively impact an adolescent. The study also discovered that many teenagers who do not exhibit angry or defiant behaviors have also experienced loss, yet do not act out anger. Suggestions are made as to why this is so, and implications for future research are made.

Goloubieff, Bruno 25 March 2013 (has links)
This research concerns the training of professionals in education-related fields. At the outset, a report dealing with the difficulties and hurdles encountered by these professionals in the work-place led to an investigation into training methods for such occupations. Since professional training combines two opposing objectives , namely instruction and independence of expression of ideas, the aim of this research is to present students with problem situations encountered in real life in order to dissect the issues and find solutions. In a society where resolving problems prevails, training in the analysis of problems is not always evident. During their course, some trainees are faced with obstacles which may lead to paradoxes. Identification of these obstacles shows that each trainee navigates between two opposing poles, and as part of training it is important that each trainee carries out self-evaluation to understand the implication of their actions and thus avoid lapses in logic and the creation of paradoxes.

Pettersson, Christian, Åsberg, Niklas January 2019 (has links)

O design, a interação com o marketing e a conjuntura socioeconômica, cultural e ambiental / Design and interaction with marketing and conjuncture sócio-economic, cultural and environmental

Monteiro, Marcelo 12 May 2014 (has links)
On the borders and territories of design and marketing, weigh the influence of endogenous factors, from novelties and controversies inherent areas, and exogenous, caused by the current conjuncture socioeconomic, cultural and environmental. This, in addition to impacting the context of a globalized world, poses new practical and theoretical challenges the suggest a new level of performance areas, as well as changes in the future of this relationship, today is still is treated in a hierachical way. That said the question is: What are the practical and epistemological consequences arising from the relationship between design and marketing on their respective areas and current situation, considering the interests, characteristics and inevitable coexistence of areas in the complex globalized environment? This research was based on qualitative methods, so first, we opted for the light of the literature review, in order to situate the problem and the present the main concepts and events related to the theme. Secondly, we chose to use semi- structured interviews with respondents from the design area, looking for pertinent and relevants data panorama of the interaction between design and marketing and it consequences. This research is exploratory, not exhaustive and intends to collaborate with the design area , as a subsidy for the reflection other stakeholders. For this reason, we chose to qualitative research, which provides, among other things, a reflection upon the correlation between theory and practice. That said, it is concluded that there is a significant relationship between the interaction of the fields of design and marketing designing new scenarios and new prospects.

No. of bitstreams: 1 Elaine Miranda.pdf: 515108 bytes, checksum: 7124c1661726fa3ecae1b968df5451d1 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2005-10-06 / The main intention of this present work was to investigate the behavior of a person diagnosticated with chronic squizophrenia and mental retard in a psychiatric context, in a private unit partners with SUS. Due to this work principles of the Behavior Analyses Applied were used. The participant was a female person, 57 years old, single, semi-illiterate, who came from a low economic family and who had already been admitted to many institutions specialized in psychiatric treatments, since 18 years old. The participant s choice was a result of many marked facts in her life, since her adolescence. Direct observations of the participant s behaviors and interviews with the nursery staff and doctors allowed important information. Through these information, it was possible to collect subsidies which collaborated on identifying the problematic-behaviors which were registered in Observations Formularies and Registration Sheets. Seven problematic-behaviors classes were selected to suffer intervention as, an example, maintain eye contact, remain isolated and sat on a bench in the patio, participate in events from the institution etc. To control the procedures the Reversion Delineation type ABAB, followed by Follow-up was used. The delineation was started with the collection of information from the Base line I. The followings were sections in Interventions´ stages I and II. In the interventions procedures of positive reinforcement, modeling and extinction were used. The results demonstrate that the procedures from the Behavior Analyses Applied were effective to control the problematic-behavior from the participant. The results were discussed in terms of applied methodology, from the effects reached and the linking from information and theory. After concluding the research part, the behavior modifications from the participant were considerable, and are results of the procedures from which she was submitted.
