The accession of queen Hatshepsut as king during the reign of another king for whom she was regent, Thutmosis III, is remarkable in all respects since it resulted in co-rulers. This unparalleled situation offers a unique opportunity to identify the iconographic and phraseological mechanisms that could be mobilised in the expression of royal identity. Critical examination of the historical evidence from this period, including new readings of Hatshepsut’s main political inscriptions, leads to a number of new hypotheses for understanding this process and the underlying motivations. The suggested date for the first attested hostility toward the queen’s memory is challenged in light of recent discoveries in the temple of Karnak. Questions relating to how Hatshepsut’s history was presented are discussed, and her “fictitious co-regency” with her father Thutmosis I is dismissed. A corpus of expressions of royal identity from the early eighteenth dynasty is compared with the historical documentation from Hatshepsut’s reign, offering new perspectives on how individual royal legitimacy could be defined.

Not by Commandment or Constraint: The Relationship Between the Dietary Behaviors of College-aged Latter-day Saints and Their Interpretation of the Word of WisdomJorgensen, Rick B. 10 July 2008 (has links) (PDF)
Latter-day Saints are recognized throughout the world by their peculiar dietary code known as the Word of Wisdom. It is accepted by the Church as revelation and contains both proscriptions and prescriptions. Different levels of interpretation, understanding and observance of the principles in the Word of Wisdom make it a unique Latter-day Saint religious health code. The study population consists of college-aged male and female members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from Brigham Young University and a Latter-day Saint student stake affiliated with Utah Valley University. A questionnaire was conceptualized, designed and validated over a one year rigorous process. The responses of 720 participants were evaluated using frequency distributions and measures of central tendency. The t statistic was used for testing the null hypothesis of equality of means between independent groups and computed using approximate degrees of freedom from Satterhwaite's approximation when the variances between the two groups are unequal. Logistic regression was used with the stepwise option to identify demographic variables associated with selected interpretation variables. Two-sided tests of significance were based on the 0.05 level against a null hypothesis of no association. Participants generally interpret and comply with the proscriptions in the Word of Wisdom. Participants can identify the prescriptions, but actual behaviors are far below scientific and government recommended minimums. The interpretations and behaviors of this sample provide valuable insights for those interested in the Word of Wisdom and its connection to the standards of the Church.

Can Proscription Fuel Violence? : The Case of Boko HaramThalmann, Carole January 2024 (has links)
This research explores the impact of proscription on non-state groups' behaviour, specifically regarding their use of violence. Recognizing that counterterrorism measures influence the behaviour of targeted groups, this thesis builds on existing literature that identifies proscription as a critical tool used by governments. Utilizing Social Identity Theory (SIT) and the naming and shaming principle to explain group behaviour, the analysis focuses on the shaming mechanism associated with terrorist designation. The developed theory posits that groups perceive their terrorist designation as an existential threat, prompting increased violence as a defensive strategy. A within-case comparison of Boko Haram before and after proscription reveals inconsistent shaming effects but shows changes in the group's narrative and identity. These findings challenge the proposed theory, suggesting that terrorist labels may bolster group identity. The study underscores the complex dynamics of labelling and its potential to increase violence and civilian casualties.

From proscription to prescription: marginality and postcolonial identities in Bessie Head's "A Question of Power"Kalua, Fetson Anderson 11 1900 (has links)
In A Question of Power Bessie Head explores metaphysical forms of knowledge
and systems of belief (against a background of what is verifiable and can be
called the truth) and finds them necessary but flawed because they are illogical.
The experience of madness in Bessie Head's main character, Elizabeth, (which is
caused by a deep fear of domination and oppression), provides an opportunity
for the character to raise propositions and questions of philosophy related to
race, class, heterosexuality, God, to mention but a few, and to come to the
conclusion that the 'truth' claims which are implied in and suggested by these
notions do not obtain in real life. In other words, there is no stable,
transcendental reality. It dawns on Elizabeth (the main character) that certain
realms of knowledge which society has determined as objective truth will
remain forever unknowable. Thus Elizabeth, the main character in a A Question
of Power, identifies and challenges all patriarchal structures and power
hierarchies in society, seeing them as the real causes of her suffering. After
completing this process of deeonstruction, she is able to integrate herself into
society. / English Studies / M. A. (English)

La commercialisation du gibier au Gabon : anthropologie du conflit des imaginaires du rapport à l'animal / The marketing game in Gabon : anthropology of conflict over the imaginary animalsMbeng Ndemezogo, Georgin 15 June 2011 (has links)
Through the example of the marketing game market in Libreville, this research aims to deconstruct the two imaginary contradictory that mobilize several categories of actors located in multiple issues of the respective consumer and animal protection. As such, it proposes to reassess the cultural models applicable to man's relationship to animals, and their historical transformations in the contemporary context of Gabon. This context is well marked by the confrontation of ideas and behaviors front endogenous binding requirements to conceptual and behavioral exogenous. The aim of our study is to show that a dualistic view summary between advocates of animal feed and animal protection advocates, should be replaced by a more detailed analysis of the positions of each other on the chessboard reports institutional and cultural to the animal that is permitted or otherwise not hunt. These reports are translated into knowledge and expertise on the animal who seems to spend some moments in the commodification totemisation, not as we know clearly where the animal is considered as subject or object knowledge and action. It is therefore important to develop a detailed work of imaginary context in the acting of a country faced at the same time answers to questions of food, sustainable development and conservation of wildlife in its forest ecosystems

Small States, Big Fish : Comparing Kuwaiti, Omani, and Qatari Foreign Policy and Engagement with Proscribed Armed Groups During Mediation in YemenLeene, Freke January 2023 (has links)
In recent years, more small states have entered the arena of international mediation. While research generally recognizes that small states can use international mediation to further their own foreign policy goals, the implications of that notion remain understudied. Specifically in relation to engagement with proscribed armed groups, current research is lacking. Furthermore, most research on small-state mediation views small states as a unitary group of actors, leaving out of consideration the differences between states. This study aims to address this research gap by investigating the influence of foreign policy independence on engagement with proscribed armed groups when relevant to the peace process. Through a Structured, Focused Comparison of the mediation efforts of Kuwait, Oman, and Qatar in Yemen in the post-Arab Spring era, this study found preliminary support for the stated hypothesis that the higher the level of independence in a small state’s foreign policy, the more likely it is to engage with proscribed actors. For Kuwait and Oman, their behavior in Yemen was fully in line with the hypothesis. While Qatar showed limited engagement in Yemen despite having an independent foreign policy, its choices were still influenced by a certain level of dependence on Saudi Arabia.
