Lacerda, Noara Pedrosa 19 April 2010 (has links)
Made available in DSpace on 2015-05-14T12:43:26Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 1 arquivototal.pdf: 601456 bytes, checksum: bbada474b85b296ebd2f0e4fe2ccaa74 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2010-04-19 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / The enunciation in the religious discourse in the faithful´s testimonies from the Igreja Universal do Reino de Deus is an analysis that points out to a new research perspective concerning religious studies. The present work, therefore, is a different insight about the religious phenomenon. It focuses on the prosperity theme present in the faithful´s testimonies from the mentioned church. Such corpus was displayed on this church s site in 2009. Our main aim, thus, was to analyze the meaning of the religious discourse in these people s enunciation process. The religious texts do constitute a wide research field from the Sociology related to the religion area, with its interpretation, favoring the mutual interaction between religion and society; the perspective of Theology in regard to hermeneutics and their interpretations of biblical principles, according to Friedrich Scheleiermacher (1768-843) and Boff (2005); to the linguistic and discursive perspective, being still very little exploited. Concerning the sociological point of view theoretical basis, we can mention Queiroz (1976); Bourdieu (2007); Wilges (1987/1988) and Bittencourt Filho (2003), among others in the area. As to the linguistic and discursive field, we can find some theoretical support in Bakhtin´s enunciation theory and dialogism (1972/2003); Brait (1996), as well as in an analysis of the religious discourse and the ways in which it is processed (ORLANDI, 1987). The Igreja Universal do Reino de Deus owns a persuasive discourse and it revisits the Words of Scripture so as to have support to its instant prosperity and happiness proposal. Such fact has somewhat directed our interest concerning this research, once we tried to study and understand the way the religious discourse, present in these texts, can characterize the persuasion modes and, therefore, reframe hope and prosperity in the selected testimonies. Thus, in an effort to fulfill our aims, some bibliographical surveys, concerning the enunciation theory through the Bakhtinian theoretical perspective, were made. Besides, we also carried out some research on the religious discourse theory. Apart from this, we selected our corpus, which was based on the faithful´s testimonies from the Igreja Universal do Reino de Deus, displayed on this church s official site. Though our analysis we could realize that both the persuasion as well as the act of convincing people are present in the religious discourse of the mentioned church. We can verify the presence of different discursive voices, which are somewhat articulated, marking the religious discourse enunciation. Besides, we could verify that it enables the perception of discourse not only as a theological or religious analysis object but it can be thought as related to other areas, receiving significant contributions to the renewal of the religious study. We present, therefore, a work that was articulated as an effort to enrich some approaches in the religious field outside the specific fields of theology and sociology, even though it does not abandon or disregard their contributions.

Pricing air to starve the fire: an institutional ethnography of smart prosperity

McCartney, Kevin 31 August 2018 (has links)
Smart Prosperity (SP) brings together multi-sectoral business leaders, policy experts, unions and progressive NGO change makers to align Canada’s civil society messaging on climate change action and policy. SP has recently found national relevance thanks to considerable policy uptake by Justin Trudeau’s ruling federal Liberal party. Rooted in a neoclassical economic model of demand-management, SP positions themselves as the architects of an energy transition regime of consumer price signals. This study examines 118 of SP’s academic and policy reports from 2008 to 2018 using an institutional ethnographic approach to textual analysis to consider the ideological and ontological consequences of SP’s policy program for the tender geographies of communities in Canada. SP is found to contrive a terrain of energy possibilities that rests on administrative abstraction, economism and market fetishism, and which places the economic administrator at the heart of Canada’s social and natural relations. / Graduate

The Wal-Martization of African American Religion: T.D. Jakes and Woman Thou Art Loosed

McGee, Paula L. 01 January 2012 (has links)
This dissertation is an ideological critique of the New Black Church model of ministry, with T.D. Jakes and Woman Thou Art Loosed (WTAL) as a case study. T.D. Jakes is an African American televangelist who pastors The Potter’s House, a supermegachurch in Dallas, Texas. He is the quintessential example of a New Black Church pastor—a religious entrepreneur with several successful faith brands. WTAL is by far his most successful brand. Unashamed of his capitalist success, with an empire estimated to be worth $100 million dollars, Jakes says that it is occupational discrimination for him not to reap the benefits of the American dream. This dissertation identifies what has happened to the brand and Jakes’s ministry as “the Wal-Martization of African American Religion.” As a theoretical concept, Wal-Martization speaks to both the ideology and process that explains the generational differences between the New Black Church and the Black Church. It also is indicative of the branding and storytelling at every level of representation of the New Black Church. Jakes and New Black Church pastors are successful because they blur the lines between sacred and secular when they combine their vocations of pastor and entrepreneur. In this dissertation, I propose a cultural studies approach and a two-fold theological method for scholars to study these popular preachers. The method combines James McClendon’s Biography as Theology and Paul Tillich’s definitions of theology and theological norm from Systematic Theology. The method is a collaborative effort between the academic theologian and preacher. The scholar uses Biography as Theology to study the preacher (Jakes), and the second part of the method, Brand as Theology and Theological Norm, is where the scholar uses qualitative research methods to study the brand (WTAL). I define theologies of prosperity as contextual theologies of empire on a continuum that affirm it is God’s will and a believer’s right to obtain health and wealth by using Scripture and rituals like seed-faith giving and positive confession. Because these popular preachers offer adherents existential explanations for suffering (health and wealth), and prescriptions for liberation, I describe theologies of prosperity as theodicy and contemporary liberation theology. However, unlike traditional liberation theologies, these theologies do not have a preferential option for the poor. Instead, Jakes and other New Black Church pastors only offer adherents a pseudo-liberation. In essence, the stories of liberation that Bishop Jakes tells in his brands do not actually empower women, ideologically these stories only encourage women to stay loyal to his brand, become covenant ministry partners, and to buy more products. Jakes and New Black Church pastors are from the Second Gilded Age, they encourage women to pursue individual success within an oppressive system. Similar to Russell Conwell and other celebrity clerics from the First Gilded Age, Jakes and these pastors inadvertently blame the victims for their poverty and for not reaping the benefits of the American Dream, which according to prosperity preachers is available to all.

These churches started in the 1970s and expanded the prosperity gospel in a context characterized by increase demands for social mobility, individualization and search for physical well -being and material. In the era of postmodernity, the neo-Pentecostals churches compete for people's adhesion, leaving in the second plan speeches about salvation in the other world and apocalyptic preaching, centrals matter in Pentecostals segments of which several of its leaders have emerged. Thus, we seek to investigate the historical origin of prosperity gospel, its relationship with the expansion of the economic model and American consumption, their discursive characteristics and adaption oneself to the fluidity of contemporary societies, where the notion of collective identities and the dissolution of institutional loyalty in several religious institutions, partly due to the advancement of secularization has led agencies of salvation benefits to redefine strategies to aggregate more believers. We also analyze its spread in two medium-sized cities, Imperatriz, in the south of Maranhão and Araguaína in northern Tocantins, with the objective of to research how some locally churches compete at a regional sphere among themselves and with other nationally known, comparing them with the Worldwide Church of God's Power. We also investigate the social representations passed on to the believers by the leadership of these institutions on questions such as sexuality and politics. As a theoretical perspective, we seek to value the interdisciplinary dialogue especially with the sociology of religion and approaches Zygmunt Bauman on the effects of postmodernity on the social organizations and individual perspectives in recent decades.

Histoire des mentalités et iconographie : la représentation des xenia dans les mosaïques de la Tunisie romaine / History of mentalities and iconography : the representation of xenia in the mosaics of Roman Tunisia

Karoui, Saloua-Radhia 23 January 2010 (has links)
The mosaics of xenia in the Roman area of Tunisia are the most numerous at the scale of the Empire. They present three particularities, the first one concerns the compositions of the ornamental tiling: the xenia motifs are represented isolated and, in most cases, associated with other decorative themes; the second one relates to the distribution of those mosaics in the household space covering all components of the domus and not just the rooms reserved for the hosts; finally the third one touches the semantic of the xenia which does not refer itself only about hospitality.

The social functions of religion in a Charismatic church in Pretoria : a case study

Tawengwa, Taurayi Tungamirayi 27 August 2013 (has links)
The objective of this case study is to explore the social functions performed by a Charismatic church in central Pretoria for its congregants and for its surrounding community. The growth of the Charismatic movement and the ‘wealth ministry’ in recent years and the subsequent notoriety of the ‘prosperity gospel,’ (especially popular within the Charismatic church movement) which encourages people to give tithes and offerings as a pre-requisite for material blessings are the fundamental motivators of the study. The study seeks to understand how the church, through its creed and sermons affects and shapes the social behaviour of its members, and its impact on socially relevant issues facing the surrounding community. The respondents are members of the church’s congregation of varying ages, nationalities and class. They were identified by making use of the snowball selection method. The key finding is that although the ‘wealth ministry’ and ‘prosperity gospel’ are generally associated with Charismatic churches, material gain is not the main emphasis of every Charismatic church’s ministry, and in fact, this Charismatic church offers its members and the community more non-material and intangible spiritual benefits. / Dissertation (MSocSci)--University of Pretoria, 2013. / Sociology / unrestricted
