Purposes for using psychological instruments in loss of income claimsBotha, Monica Evelyn 11 1900 (has links)
Despite the wide spread use of psychological instruments in the forensic context, there is a dearth of research on the purposes for using it. A qualitative case study approach was adopted in this study to explore the purposes for which industrial psychologists use psychological instruments in loss of income claims.
The research study comprised of two phases. Firstly, a literature review was used to provide some background on psychological assessment in the forensic context. The literature review described the historical development of forensic psychology, what psychological instruments are and how they are used in the forensic context. The forensic context, in which industrial psychologists operate, was also described. Furthermore, the initial conceptual framework to outline the context of the next phase of the research was illustrated.
The second phase was an exploratory study that made use of a multiple-case study approach. The main research aim was to explore the purposes for using psychological instruments in loss of income claims by industrial psychologists. Another aim was to explore the psychological instruments used. The final aim was to explore the kind of information that is needed in the forensic context, which is not currently available by means of existing psychological assessment. Case study data was collected by conducting semi-structured interviews with four industrial psychologists. Each interview represented a case to be analysed. The multiple-case study data gathered were then analysed using coding, within-case analysis and across-case analysis. The findings indicate that psychological instruments are used for the following purposes: (1) to add value to the quantification of a loss of income claim; and (2) to provide information that is required on the specific situation and circumstances surrounding the claim. Furthermore, the research findings also revealed that the purpose of using a psychological instrument to add value is influenced by internal factors of the psychological instrument as well as situational characteristics of the legal matter at hand. Through the exploration of the purposes for using psychological instruments, specific instruments used could be identified. Another finding included the existence of a perception that the psychological instruments currently available in South Africa are inadequate to provide the information required in the forensic context. The findings also revealed the kind of information that is needed.Recommendations were made for future research and industry-related practices. / Industrial and Organisational Psychology / M.Comm. Human resources practitioners' experiences of engagement interventions with a financial institutionDuffton, Cameron Ronald 06 1900 (has links)
The aim of this study was to explore human resources (HR) practitioners’ experiences of engagement interventions within a financial institution. A qualitative research approach was followed which was informed by the hermeneutic phenomenological paradigm. Semi-structured interviews were used. The findings indicated that HR practitioners play a critical role in enhancing engagement in organisations through the implementation of effective engagement interventions. The HR practitioners often thought of themselves as the ‘heart’, ‘the core’, ‘facilitator’, ‘business partner’ or ‘middle man’ when implementing engagement interventions. The majority of the HR practitioners did understand engagement, their role in the implementation of engagement interventions and the tools used to assess engagement. However, the findings did indicate that some of the HR practitioners within this study had limited knowledge of engagement, engagement interventions and the tools used to implement engagement. The findings also indicated that the implementation of an engagement intervention should be a collaborative process between employer and employee, with the support of top management to ensure the success of the engagement intervention. Engagement interventions were considered to be predominantly positive and successful by most of the participants. However, it was noted by participants that if there is no follow-through on the implementation of the engagement interventions it can become negative. / Industrial and Organisational Psychology / M. Junior clinical psychologists' experience of processing the death of a therapy client, from a cause other than suicide : a qualitative studyFord, Debbie January 2010 (has links)
Aim: According to the existing evidence-base, the experience of the death of a therapy client (from a cause other than suicide) for Clinical Psychologists is substantially under researched. Moreover, previous studies into the experience of patient or client death for healthcare professionals indicate this may be an important focus for research. The present study aimed to explore the often unheard, lived experiences of client death for Clinical Psychologists at the beginning of their career. It was hoped that these research findings may assist training courses, clinical supervisors and other Psychologists of all grades to make sense of this experience in greater depth. Method: A qualitative approach was adopted for this study. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with nine female junior Clinical Psychologists (Trainee, Newly Qualified) who had experienced the death of a client. The accounts were analysed using IPA, which attempts to illuminate the lived experience of a phenomenon for small samples of individuals. Results: The analytic procedure highlighted three main themes as emerging from participants’ accounts in the context of their client’s death: Connected and affected: Being unprepared for initial reactions to the client's death; "we do it so why can't you?" facing institutional denial and avoidance; "It's not something I've forgotten about", The lasting impact of client death: Learning reluctant lessons and experiencing continuing bonds. Implications: This study highlights the importance of recognising the impact of client death on Clinical Psychologists in particular, and healthcare professionals in general. Client death, by all causes, appears much overlooked within the current research base, which may have led to a self-perpetuating cycle of hidden and unspoken stories. The findings indicate death needs to be on the research and teaching agenda within the institution of Clinical Psychology. As a result we may be able to begin to break the current cycle of silence which has served to potentially disservice us as professionals, our teams and most importantly our clients.

Para levantamento destas representações consideramos as políticas de saúde mental na área de álcool e outras drogas, a influência da Reforma Psiquiátrica e o Conceito de redução de danos, além da história das drogas e do proibicionismo no Brasil e no mundo / Through the deviance interactionist theory this research aims to study the representation of CAPSad psychologists regarding the use of alcohol and other drugs. We set out the hypothesis that the psychologists contracted in the institution would have representation the abusive use of drugs such as deviant behavior and the user as a sick. The method chosen was semi-structured interviews carried out in four CAPSad. The survey was divided into two parts, the first of them performed as a pilot project in a city that there is only one unit and had the participation of two psychologists and the second held in three CAPSad units in the same region in the city of São Paulo that had the participation of five psychologists. To identify these representations we consider mental health policies in the area of alcohol and other drugs, the influence of the psychiatric reform and the concept of harm reduction, beyond the story of drugs and the prohibition in Brazil and in the world

Psychologické aspekty následků trestné činnosti u odsouzených mužů ve výkonu trestu odnětí svobody / Psychological aspects of the consequences of criminal activity in convicted men serving imprisonmentOUŘEDNÍKOVÁ, Marie January 2019 (has links)
The aim of the diploma thesis is to describe the consequences of imprisonment from a psychological point of view and to compare it with the testimonies of convicts. Every convicted person who gets into a prison is exposed to psychological problems associated with imprisonment. These problems can be associated not only with pleading guilty and accepting a sentence connected with a commited crime but also with, a transition from civil life to life in prison, adaptating to life in prison, dealing with restriction of freedom and restrictions of contact with their loved ones and so on. The thesis has a theoretical part divided into three chapters, where data has been added from transcripts of interviews with four sentenced men. The first chapter focuses on the characteristics of serving imprisonment, including the functions and the purpose of imprisonment and on penitentiary psychology. The second chapter describes the adaptation of prisoners to imprisonment in view of the length and frequency of imprisonment as well as the personality of the convicted person. The third chapter focuses on the psychological aspects of imprisonment (the second life of prisoners, aggression, bullying, suicide, self-harm, abuse and use of narcotic and psychotropic substances, limiting social contacts). The aim of the diploma thesis is to describe the consequences of imprisonment from a psychological point of view and to compare it with data from interviews with sentenced persons.

Previous issue date: 2012-05-02 / This research aimed to develop a critical analysis of the Brazilian production
of the psychologist with patients with chronic renal failure on dialysis,
performing literature review on the subject. The analysis seeks to understand
how the psychologist is developing its work, if the work is characterized by
interdisciplinary and possible interventions related to the impact of dialysis on
patients and their families. The literature review consisted of articles on the
topic of online journals indexed in SciELO and BVS-Psi, using intersection
keyword that addressed the goal, from broader issues for more specific, as in
the following examples: Chronic Renal Failure X Psychology; Chronic Renal
Failure X X Psychologist Psychology; Chronic Renal Failure Treatment X X
Psychology. We used the following criteria for selection of articles: (a)
published in journals with review CAPES / Qualis ANPEPP A1, A2, B1, B2,
B3 and B4 (b) available online (c) published from 2001 to 2011 (d) produced
in Brazil, (e) authoring psychologist(s) or at least a psychologist in
coauthoring. The search results indicated that 16 studies were analyzed
according to the following categories: identification (of the academic authors,
local research institution to which the authors belong, Qualis classification of
the journal, year of publication); characteristics of the item (typestudy and
method) the psychologist (type of care, focus on the patient or the family
health team; dialysis modalities, and most recurring themes). The results
indicate that most articles are written by psychologists, focusing on empirical
research with patients on hemodialysis. Universities in the Southeast stand
out with the highest concentration. The articles are divided into regular
assessed Qualis A2 to B4, and most of them concentrated in categories B3
and B4 (total of 11 articles). There was also predominant in the publications of
the psychologist during maintenance of the disease and in subjects such as
quality of life and treatment compliance. There is a shortage in the scientific
production on the theme proposed in this study. It is necessary that the
psychologist goes beyond the walls, disclose and publish their work in
reputable journals for their work is valued and recognized for their own
psychology and other areas, besides helping to constantly improve their
work.
periódicos com avaliação CAPES/ANPEPP Qualis A1, A2, B1, B2, B3 e B4;
autores pertencem, classificação Qualis do periódico, ano de publicação);
características do artigo (tipo de estudo e método); atuação do psicólogo (tipo
de atendimento; foco no paciente, nos familiares ou na equipe de saúde;
(Apoio

Previous issue date: 2017-02-14 / Conselho Nacional de Pesquisa e Desenvolvimento Cient?fico e Tecnol?gico - CNPq / This study deals with the relation between full-time public school and the childhood and adolescence network protection in the northeast region in Campinas, Brazil. This research?s goal is to investigate how this relation happens and what is the school psychology?s role when facing this scenario. Starting from the comprehension concerning social politics and the need of children and adolescents? full protection and considering them as human beings with rights, we aim at discourse about politics? intersectoriality, thus the network may act by means of breaking with the vulnerabilities concerning children and their families. Based on the studies from the Critical Psychology and the Dialectical Historic Materialism we have been present at the school and the community through the ECOAR Project ? Convenience Action and Reflection Space. The region?s mapping was made to delimit the existing services on the territory, also there were conversations with teachers and managers, observation on the TDCs (Collective Teacher Work), there were meetings with the families and the protection network, analysis of student?s folders who are accompanied by some network service and interviews with the Pedagogical Counsellor at the school. All the procedures previously described were registered in diaries by the ECOAR team and the data was considered by means of constructive-interpretative analysis. The results found from the sources analyzed showed a disarticulation inside the network, the existence of a pathologizing and medicalized culture in the services, the tendency of blaming families for children?s conditions and at last the need for changes inside the institutions so it will be possible to have intersectoral articulation. We understand that in this scenario, school psychology acting possibilities are diverse, as long as professionals in this area are aware of the contractions on the capitalist system and by doing so they adopt practices based on cooperation and dialogues, aiming at enhancing each other and adding up efforts to build, together, an education capable to dialogue with life demands from Brazilian population.

Previous issue date: 2009-02-02 / Universidade Estadual Paulista J?lio de Mesquita Filho / Inequalities of our society and the difficulty of existing humanized relationship between adults and children based on the values of the Statute of Children and Adolescents has motivated this study. Thus, this research was aimed in knowing how the values of the triad of Entire Protection Doctrine- liberty, dignity and respect were understood by parents and teachers and its implication on the children?s daily life. This research was taken at a public preschool, having as participants its children?s parents and teachers. The data of this study was produced during the discussion groups as well as the researcher s field diaries records developed during her presence at the school. The results were analyzed according to the historical and dialectical materialism since we believe on the interpretation of the phenomenon from the existing contradictions of daily life. It was proved that the ideology of the capitalism system rules parents and teachers of which subdue to this system even believing that they are the ones who establish the rules and limits. For them the warranty of dignity value is associated with the family?s wealth, respect is related with children?s autonomy, even though adults and children subdue to the society?s oppressive relation and liberty has been understood as the permission for children to express themselves and do whatever they want to, thus it was not observed during our presence at the school. The Statute cannot guarantee a humanized life to this population once social inequalities restrain an equal treatment for those who live such distant reality. The school psychologist needs to assume a role of social transformation promoting the access, the argument and the criticism to what is imposed.
