Blended memory : distributed remembering and forgetting through digital photographyFawns, Timothy James January 2017 (has links)
This thesis explores practices and experiences of using photography to support remembering. While the increasing use of photography is well documented, we have limited theoretical understanding of how we approach the taking, organising, and sharing of personal images in relation to memory, and of the opportunities and risks that are created through technological change. Two studies were conducted in which a total of 21 participants were interviewed in front of a sample of their photographs. Study 1 explored photography and remembering around a single, specific event: a wedding. Study 2 explored longer-term patterns of photographic and remembering activity across a range of contexts and events. The analysis showed that the ways that participants engaged with other people and technologies were significant in determining the kinds of photographs that were produced, and the engagement with those photos. Photographic practices were also heavily influenced by the situations in which they were performed and the beliefs and preferences of individuals. The existence of photographs could lead to thinking about particular aspects of the past, but the taking of photographs also altered the experience of what was being photographed. This could be seen as disruptive, depending on the participant’s beliefs about whether photography was a legitimate part of experience. When taking photos, participants pursued a mix of aesthetics, objectivity, and personal meaning, and perceptions of these qualities could influence the way that photographs were used in cueing recall. However, while most participants had produced large collections of photographs, there had been limited engagement with these and taking or having photographs could be more important than looking at them. The thesis concludes that there is value in redefining memory as a kind of activity that emerges through the performance of remembering and that is dependent on the tools used to support it and the situations in which it is performed. From this perspective, photography and autobiographical remembering are parts of the same wider activity, an inseparable blend of internal and external processes. As such, attempts to support our memories should consider both the features of technology and the experience of using it, as well as the ways that we work with tools and people when remembering.

Intelligent adaptive environments: proposal for inclusive, interactive design enabling the creation of an interconnected public open space on the Iron Horse trestle interurban-railroad-subway [St. Louis, Missouri]Anterola, Jeremy K. January 1900 (has links)
Master of Landscape Architecture / Department of Landscape Architecture/Regional and Community Planning / Stephanie A. Rolley / Economically insecure times require reduction of energy and land consumption, enhancement
of socio-economic and environmental quality of life, and reutilization of neglected existing
structures and sites. Traditional planning and design dictates through top-down policy and
ordered master planning. In contrast, interactive smart technology simulating human cognitive
reactions offers an alternative design framework - an intelligent, adaptive environment – capable
of redefining contemporary public open space design.
Traversing through the neglected Fifth Ward north of downtown St. Louis, the adaptive
reutilization of the abandoned Iron Horse Trestle interurban elevated railroad and subway
applies the Sense Respond Adapt Mutate Emerge conceptual framework (the S.R.A.M.E.
Strategy) by utilizing existing resources to create an interconnected, emergent open space
network.
Ten unique sites along the Iron Horse Trestle are initially embedded with sensory devices
capable of gathering and synthesizing learned information. The real-time actions translate
into physical structural responses. The site specifi c reactions extend outwards as structural
adaptations to indeterminate changes from trail users. The evolving structural form connects
and mutates the existing structure. Similar to a Choose your own adventure gamebook, the
Trestle’s open-ended and reactive programmatic strategies emerge as a series of potential
options for future inclusionary, interactive designs.
By selectively enhancing, creating, or enabling an open space system reacting to real-time
actual user needs over time directly along the Trestle line, the S.R.A.M.E. Strategy offers a
potential alternative framework for the indirect revitalization of neglected infrastructural
and economic conditions, a residential rejuvenation catalyst, and future socio-economic and
ecological sustainable living patterns education tool.
The Trestle’s revitalization serves as an education tool critiquing contemporary landscape
architecture and general design practice - the static, dictated, and consumptive. Intelligent
adaptive environments offer an alternative framework enabling interactive design decision
making capabilities to the users as options evolving over time.

An investigation of the sustainability and practicality of a neurologically based behaviour model of supportCook, Paula D. 19 August 2009 (has links)
This thesis describes an investigation of a model of support for students with emotional/behavioural disorder (EBD) that involves neurologically based behaviour (NBB). Students with EBD that may involve NBB do not consistently respond to the behavioural interventions typically offered in schools. Organic neurological differences and executive functioning deficits may be implicated in neurologically based behaviour. Students who present with neurologically based behaviour characteristics often are said to have a developmentally delayed or undeveloped recognition of cause and effect. Thus, logical consequences and school wide behaviour support systems tend to be ineffective.
Some direct service providers now advocate “working from the bottom up” (Nunley, 2005; Deak, 2005; Solomon & Heide, 2005) to address students with violent or aggressive behaviour. In this study, such a bottom up approach involved the use of environmental modification, body awareness, somatic understanding, and various calming techniques and meditative strategies to quiet the physiological responses, triggered from the bottom and mid areas of the brain (Nunley, 2005; Deak, 2005; Solomon & Heide, 2005). Once the midbrain is calmed, higher order interventions, such as cognitive behavioural therapy, conflict resolution, mediation, and others were used to help students process information, put appropriate language to behavioural events, and reframe and redefine their needs in more acceptable terms (Garbarino, 2001, Nunley, 2005; Charles, 2008a).
The education system has a legal obligation to educate students with neurologically based behaviour despite the extreme behavioural issues they raise. Educators need to develop additional strategies and techniques to address students with severe behaviour. This thesis highlights a theoretical framework for a model of support for students with emotional/behavioural disorder that involves neurologically based behaviour.

Herdefiniering van identiteit as 'n proses van wording tydens die adolessent se verlies van 'n geliefdeVan der Merwe, Susanna Johanna 04 1900 (has links)
Text in Afrikaans / This study is aimed at the development of strategies for therapists to be used with adolescents and late adolescents (15 to 20 years of age) who have lost a loved one. This will be done by focussing on the redefining of identity as a way of becoming. The starting point of the study is to be found in the problem formulation that the process of becoming of adolescents who have suffered the loss of a loved one, may be blocked because they do not have the necessary skills to overcome the loss. The second problem is that therapists do not have the necessary skills to empower these adolescents so that the redefining of identity can be achieved. / Social work / D. Diac. (Spelterapie)

Kerkmusiek vir hedendaagse tienersVan Tonder, Barend Jacobus 06 1900 (has links)
vanwee:
binne die handelingsveld van viering (waaronder himnologie);
2. 'n Verskuiwing in wereldbeskouing weg van modernisme na postmodernisme;
as die 'Verlore Generasie' of 'Generasie X' .
The narrow defining of church music today experiences a critical
assault on account of:
1. Drastic turns within the development of Practical theology
in the past few decades, which ask for a renewed
investigation within the field of himnology;
2. a Shift in worldview away from modernism to post-modernism;
3. The birth of a total new generation of adolescents, known as
the 'Lost Generation' or 'Generation X' .
Church music in the narrow sense, as it is still understood to a great extent, does not take these tendencys serious enough. For this reason it's impact and influence in the life of today's teenagers declines.
With this study a thorough acknowledgement of these shifts is
attempted, which will result in a much broader defining of church music, and in turn will bring forth a scope for more variety and actuality, so that hopefully the growing gap between teenagers and church music can be bridged. / Practical Theology / M.Diac. (Jeugwerk)

This PhD aims to understand how pre service education programmes in health education might have an impact on young teachers' professionalization. The diversity of training programmes at stage in the Master « Métier de l'Enseignement, de l'Education et de la Formation » (MEEF) depends on the chosen degree (1er ou 2nd degré), the type (Professeur des écoles, conseiller principal d'éducation, professeur de lycées et collèges), young teacher's status, (étudiants ou fonctionnaires stagiaires) and place where students are trained. This professionalization has to be seen from a professionnal development's prospect that enables us to take into account the training programme, as well as young teachers and the complexity of health education. Ergonomic psychology has been chosen as a theoretical frame to describe products and processes of this development. Studies seek to approach the tasks understood and grasped by young teachers as well as the various processes involved and factors closely connected. The MMR strategy consists of a longitudinal follow-up, by questionnaires, a sort of logbook gathering all the information and peer's instructions taking into account the various time factors and training programmes. Our results show that health education's training plans can reveal great variations from one training programme to another and influence the task's redefining process. It seems that theoretical knowledges would rather impact on the way the task is understood, whereas practical experiences with pupils would strongly impact on young teachers characteristics (interest, self-confidence feeling, health education's relevance in the forthcoming practice.) The task appropriation when it does take place, confirms the adoption of a promotive health's perspective which aims to build the health skills grounds, pupils careful consideration, and an environmental awareness where practices take place. The advanced justifications refer to professional and training experiences, rather than to individual factors. To conclude, it is indeed the alternative and incorporating nature of the pre service education that seems to act as the driving force of the young teachers 'development and professionalization, regarding health education
