The Effects of Reframing and Self-Control Statements on Loneliness, Depression and Controllability

Garber, Ronald Alan 08 1900 (has links)
Reframing, a therapy technique which allows the therapist to restate a situation or problem so that it is perceived in a new way, has received considerable attention recently because of its purported positive effects on the therapeutic process. The increase in the use of reframing has taken place despite an absence of empirical confirmation of its effectiveness. Proponents of reframing comment on its usefulness early in the therapeutic process as a means for helping clients to more positively view their symptomatic behavior, to experience some affective relief, to shift toward an increased sense of control regarding their symptoms, and to view their counselor and their expectations for counseling more positively. The purpose of this study was to examine the differential effects of reframing and selfcontrol responses on the subjects' expressed degree of loneliness, depression, and perceived control of loneliness. In addition, effects of these interventions on the subjects' ratings of the interviewers and the subjects' expectations regarding counseling were explored.

A self-study of outdoor education in secondary teacher education

North, Christopher John January 2015 (has links)
As a teacher educator, I was concerned at the passive roles that pre-service teachers (PSTs) seemed to take in my outdoor education (OE) courses and I believed that more authentic (teacher-like) experiences would assist PSTs to take more active roles. Early in this research I developed a metaphor of PSTs as passengers on the long distance flight (their degree) to the destination (of teaching) to explain some of this passivity. Using a self-study methodology, I examined a variety of ‘authentic’ learning experiences during a semester-long course. Guided by Schwab’s commonplaces, I accessed perspectives of learners, milieu, teacher educator and discipline to provide me with some certainty about the effects of my teaching. The authentic learning experiences included my use of transparent teaching (open journaling and thinking aloud), modelling of proposed graduating teacher standards, fatality case studies and handing over control on an OE camp. As the research progressed, it became apparent that my initial framing of the problem of PST passivity was flawed. In particular, the most authentic experiences of teaching on the OE camp did not necessarily result in the active learning I had anticipated. Through the self-study methodology, I came to realise that authenticity was impeding the learning of some students. I reframed my approach to teacher education and used Schwab’s eclecticism to also acknowledge the equal importance of passive learning, inauthenticity and teacher uncertainty. I argue that this eclectic approach provides a more nuanced and fuller understanding of teaching and learning in the OE course. Finally, I discuss the criteria within self-study for demonstrating improvement and representation of results.

Reframing Past Bullying Experiences Through the Lens of Harry Potter

Lee, Haeeun 14 June 2021 (has links)
Long after being bullied, many individuals find it difficult to leave their bullying experiences behind and have difficulty confidently move forward with their lives. Memories of being bullied often remain as an agitation that detracts from personal happiness and wellbeing. This study included 10 female and three male undergraduate students who reported experiencing mild to moderate bulling during childhood. Participants were self-proclaimed Harry Potter fans. All participants reported previously reading the entire Harry Potter book series. As a reframing strategy to address past bullying experiences, this research utilized bibliotherapy in addition to scriptotherapy. Participants selected one chapter from the Harry Potter series, one that they were already familiar with and that included bullying situations. They rewrote the chapter, inserting themselves as a character into the story with the original characters. In re-writing the chapter, participants built and maintained constructive peer relationships with familiar characters in the Harry Potter series. They inserted themselves into their selected chapter as standing up against the story’s characters who were portrayed as bullies. Based on feedback from participant interviews, individuals reported that the writing experience supported them in reframing their painful memories of bullying. They perceived themselves in a proactive position, and thus perceived the experience in a more positive light. In turn, this experience of reframing their personal story supported them in mitigating the unsettling and painful memories of bullying that they experienced during adolescence. Based on the participants’ feedback, recommendations are made for mental health professionals to more effectively intervene with youth who experience bullying. The combined strategies of bibliotherapy and scriptotherapy support individuals’ reframing of their past bullying experiences. Although this research was conducted with youth who were Harry Potter fans, youth who struggle with other challenges may also benefit from a combination of bibliotherapy and scriptotherapy. When youth identify with characters in children’s literature, this relationship with fictional characters may form the foundation for reframing and rethinking past challenges. Youth who enjoy writing and expressing themselves in creative ways may be especially open to scriptotherapy.

Lives on the (story)Line: Group Facilitation with Men in Recovery at The Salvation Army

Spinazola, Lisa Pia Zonni 05 July 2018 (has links)
In this dissertation, I seek to examine the effects of purposeful journaling and guided storytelling on past traumas, perception of current lives, and the development of new coping skills among men at The Salvation Army’s residential adult rehabilitation center (ARC). All residents of the ARC must attend Christian-based devotional services, go to Alcoholics Anonymous (A.A.) meetings, follow the A.A. 12-step program, and sign up for several weekly counseling and educational groups, one of which is the “Guided Journaling and Storytelling” group I lead. The men who attended this group are (1) addicted to drugs and/or alcohol, (2) face homelessness, (3) cope with some form of mental or physical health issue, (4) may have criminal records, and (5) have alienated most of their social support. Through a twelve-week curriculum I developed, I introduced coping skills—building resilience, expressive writing, and deep breathing—while incorporating art, music, and poetry in the groups. I elicited participants’ stories through prompts, using my own experiences to model vulnerability and demonstrate concepts, such as: narrative reframing; how memories can be uncertain, partial, and elusive; how storytelling can prompt forgotten stories; and the efficacy of including emotion and rich details in the stories we tell. Knowing the value of writing and storytelling, I set out to see if the communicative practices I had learned in the past that had improved my life situation might assist others to write themselves out of destructive patterns, desperation, and trauma, and into sober and more fulfilling lives.

The inca country: Reframing translated news from spanish to english by peruvian news agency andina

Cama-Casafranca, Melissa Erika, Del Carmen Olivares-Espinoza, Lucía 02 February 2021 (has links)
This paper analyses the reframing strategies (Baker, 2006) and transfer of communicational functions (Nord, 2010) in some news translated by state-owned Peruvian News Agency Andina (Agencia Peruana de Noticias Andina) from Spanish to English. This media platform uses translation to expand its readership to foreigners that might be interested in visiting and investing in Peru (Andina, 2016, par. 14), thus helping the nation's economy to grow. The study is based on a bilingual corpus of 114 news articles published in the economics and tourism sections during 2019. The contrastive text analysis showed how Andina reframes the translations to adapt them into a new sociocultural context, reflecting the discourse of the Peru brand. Andina translations reveal the use of reframing strategies to recontextualize events having an impact on Peruvian economy, to herald a "patriotic" discourse that highlights government's achievements, targeting Peruvian readership, and to provide information related to Peruvian tourist attractions. The changes in communicative functions inform change in text type focus in a set of translated news towards a tourism genre.

Reframing Loneliness in Adult Females Who Vary in Dependency and Locus of Control

Jarvis, Mary Ann O'Loughlin 05 1900 (has links)
Reframing in counseling offers the client a different framework for symptoms, thereby allowing the client a perspective that leads to change or no need for change. Using a loneliness measure as the dependent variable, 58 females underwent one of three treatments: positive reframing, self-control statements, or a waiting list control procedure. Two two-way analyses of covariance used an independent measure of dependency for the first analysis and a measure of perceived control for the second. Treatment type was the second dimension for each analysis. A significant interaction resulted for control by treatment F (2, 51) = 3.24; p < .05). A Newman-Keuls revealed significant differences for those who perceived themselves as in control, where reframing was more effective than either the control procedure (q_r = 3.56; p < .05) or those who perceived others as in control (q_r = 3.21; p < .05).

We verify the recall of the myth by the community of devotes presents in the neighborhoods and regions poor the city. In this sense, we motive the research in its historical context, since the issue of cult in Europe and its migration to Brazil of old parties´ king, in January and rollicks to the integration of dance and singing as a popular practice. From diffusion of the devotion by a colony marked by ethnic miscegenation, the ritual spread by the Brazilian population. The hybridity of the culture of religious practices is a reality that is categorically different from the official Catholicism and orthodox. / At the very beginning of this master’s dissertation we raise, right in the first chapter, a quick scenery in which the present study permeates, justifying socially and scientifically the importance of it based on previous studies made during graduation and specialization as well as other relevant justifications. On the second chapter we present as the general goal: to analyze the reframing that the collectors project on the collected material, matching the income generated by such activity. The research took place in Gravataí/RS, in which city the researcher has formal labor. We will also show on this item some methodological issues. The research universe consists on a qualitative research based on ethnographic approach as well as data collection made through observation and interviews with open questions to five collector women. On the third chapter we made a summary about the profession of the material collectors focusing on their importance in our society, being immerged in the social issue and also being considered as cheap work force. A brief view on the national and regional situation of the collection activity itself about the solid residual management, recycling and landfills is also presented. Also, on the third chapter we approach the consumption ease in the modernized world we live in with the facilities created so as certain social classes get purchases, goods, objects and things, considering their terminal character. The public polices also pervade this dissertation and they are divided into four categories: distributive, regulatory, redistributive and constitutive. The focus here was on the redistributive one being represented by the social policy, that is, the social assistance. On the fourth chapter we present the collector women work highlighting their individual struggle in life as well as a debate about the meaning of the material they collect. The final chapter consists of a debate on some conclusive arrangements with reflexive unfolding about the social and economic vulnerability of the Latin America. It also consists of understanding that the social policy must consider the collectors lives as the active constructions of the material reframing.

This work presents the research trajectory held in the empirical context of the pilgrimage and the shrine of Nossa Senhora do Caravaggio in the city of Farroupilha-RS. In order to build data, we made use of the ethnographic method, conducting participant observation, interviews, surveys on web sites, talks to the actors, filmic and photographic images of pilgrimages and periods Day Party May 26th. We seek to understand thereby as agencies of different actors influence the devotional gifts designs in devotion to Caravaggio. A demand for printing a "instrumental" logic to religion refers to the fact that culture goes through a process of profound reframing, changing its contours to the centrality that the performativity assumes nowadays in action and agents of the projects. Instead of privileging a single line of force or this action logic in the production and promotion of pilgrimage and other activities such as hiking, revitalization of sacred spaces, disclosure of devotion, etc., we decided to compose a panorama of perceptions from the insertion we had in the search field. This enabled voice and time to the action of the actors and their actions (SCHUTZ, 1974). A possible consideration is that although the agencies around the devotion to Caravaggio are converging to a common point, channel the potential to attract the faithful and pilgrims throughout the year, they remain still restricted to certain originality of vocalization interests, common goals and purposes. The movement to approach the sacred and religion is always tense and conflictive for individuals marked by urban sociability impacted by secularization and religious modernity. Although that rumored event, a church project becomes manifest in the midst of this period of religious deinstitutionalization.
