Reframing diagonostic labels as interpersonal metaphors : a social constructionist perspective

Van Zyl, Francois Nicolaas 11 1900 (has links)
Research indicates that the number of individuals diagnosed with neurological, learning and psychiatric disorders has shown a sharp increase in recent years. An increasing acknowledgement of the importance of narratives and discourses in constructing social reality has stimulated much debate on the consequences of diagnosing individuals with such diagnostic labels. The aim of this study was to explore the ways in which such individuals construct meaning from their experiences of adapting to their diagnostic labels by reframing them as interpersonal metaphors. In service of this aim, a social constructionist epistemology was adopted and discourse analysis was used to analyse the results from three participants’ interview data. The results indicate that participants managed to construct meaning from their experiences with their diagnostic labels through a reframing process that serve to promote positive perceptions of self in relation to others. Furthermore, this meaning-construction process appears to be a reflective and interactional one, in that it relies on a negotiation of meanings between people in a retrospective fashion. / Psychology / M.A. (Clinical Psychology)

Ontwikkeling van alternatiewe konstruksies in 'n terapeutiese gesprek : 'n gevallestudie

Voges, Aletta Maria 01 1900 (has links)
Text in Afrikaans / In this study a description of the development of meaningful alternative constructions has been provided. The development of meaningful alternative descriptions of a painful situation within which people find themselves could create the possibility of movement taking place. · The development of alternative descriptions was discussed by means of the following components of a therapeutic conversation: The therapist uses the different punctuations of the family in their description of the problem and takes complementary descriptions into consideration. (Punctuation/complementation.) In the description of alternative realities the therapist uses a language that creates hope for change. (Reframing.) The therapist listens to the family with respect and endeavours to hear the family's themes, to understand and to use them. (Language.) The therapist, by asking questions of which the answers facilitate further questions, accepts the responsibility to facilitate discussions that encourage participation in the therapeutic process. (Participation/questions leading to further questions.) The discussion was based on a constructivist approach. A case history was described to illustrate how meaningful alternative descriptions were developed in a therapeutic conversation. / M.A. (Social Work)

The influence of hypnosis in the context of sports-injuries : an ecosystemic perspective

Kaplan, Roleen Sandra 12 1900 (has links)
In this study an ecosystemic approach to self-hypnosis was utilised as a tool to explore and describe the healing of sport injuries. Four injured Subjects, from four different sporting activities participated in the study. Self-hypnosis/hypnosis was used as a linguistic means to perturb the problem-defining ideas within which the sport injury was embedded. Problem dis-solution involved a process of reframing each Subject's current reality through dialogue, and a new reality for each respective Subject was co-constructed through consequent linguistic differentiation. The hypnotist, participating in the linguistic domain as an equal participant, looked for intended meanings in each respective conversational exchange with the athletes, and synthesised information creatively. This process and the thinking behind each case study is described in detail in this dissertation. / Psychology / M.A. (Psychology)

With this, we find different discursive materiality, refracting the events and presenting statements already said. In this paper we produce gestures interpretation of the inscriptions around posthumous. It's about gender epitaph we turn our eyes, based on a reading of discursive practice that enables us to understand the meanings through the production conditions of utterances. Our study takes a look toward production of discourse epitáfico, official and fabulous, from the procedures used in his speeches, how they are organized and redistributed. Therefore, we, the light of the theoretical assumptions of Discourse Analysis of French line, the general objective, analyze the genre both in the epitaph "official" as in fabulous shape, as evidenced by observing the redefinition of gender through memory and discursive power relations that are involved in their sayings. The "new" epitaphs, to break the discursive order established in the original epitaphs, fall into a place unofficial, and utopian comic grotesque, inscribing new meanings through a subversive and weaving complaints glimpse wires in the text a socio-historical characteristic of postmodern thought.

What can Art Teach us about Integration? : The role of art in postmigrant integration: cases from Germany, Sweden and Luxembourg

Couronne, Céline January 2020 (has links)
The term integration became a buzzword and is omnipresent in the current European discourses. Despite its broad definitions, there is a tendency in migration studies and the political narrative to focus exclusively on migrants and their descendants while upholding the vision of a fixed “host society”, with an established national culture, in which migrants should integrate. The present study aims to reframe the concept of integration by adopting a postmigrant approach and by analyzing the contribution of art projects in this regard. To do so, the study draws on two current theoretical approaches to integration in the social sciences, Stuart Hall’s conceptualization of national culture, the postmigration concept and the societal impact of art as theoretical framework. First, the notion of integration has been positioned theoretically in current postmigrant debates. The content analysis demonstrates that the conceptualization of postmigrant integration takes distance from the notion of assimilation and looks beyond the topic of migration. Second, eight semi-structured interviews have been conducted with project team members and project participants of the art projects “Newcomers”, “Leben, Erzählen, Schreiben”, “Hela Bilden”, and the organization “Alter & Ego”. The thematic analysis of the interviews showed the necessity to address the “host population”, i.e. individuals without experience of forced migration, to overcome monolingualism and to concentrate on societal diversity which contributes to the theorization of postmigrant integration. The present thesis indicates the importance of the arts regarding their societal impact and agency to provide alternative narratives on migration and integration. It also stresses the necessity of integration policies and the European migration regime to take part in the reframing of current migration discourses by directly addressing the “host population” and acknowledging today’s context of plural societies in which everyone should integrate. /
This thesis has been written as part of the EuMIGS double degree programme in the field of Migration Studies.

The grocery store of the future : A study on change and how the store should be future-proofed.

Härenstam, August, Ahl, Oscar, Lönn, Jakob January 2022 (has links)
Grocery stores have changed and developed over the years. Today the industry is completelydifferent than 80 years ago and a big part of this is due to digitalization. The empiricalmaterial for this study has been collected from ICA Maxi Stormarknad Växjö as well as theICA Group. The industry has undergone many changes and are now on their way towardspotentially the largest one in its history. With the help of Richard Normann's book Reframingbusiness, when the map changes the landscape, ICA Maxi Stormarknad Växjö's work withchange can be analyzed in a qualitative study from a constructionist point of view. We haveconducted interviews with employees within the management of ICA Maxi StormarknadVäxjö based on new technology, changed consumer behavior and how ICA MaxiStormarknad Växjö works with different activities. This is to be able to describe how thelocal management in a store which belongs to one of Sweden’s biggest grocery storecompanies works with change. With this thesis we aim to examine how previous changeshave contributed to where the ICA Maxi Stormarknad Växjö is today and together with thecollected theoretical knowledge look into the future and analyze potential ways forward. Thethesis will not present a conclusion to the problems that we have found, but an externalperspective of changes locally and with a connection to ICA centrally and our gatheredtheoretical chapter.

Van der Westhuizen, Hedwig Ruth 30 November 2003 (has links)
This is a constructivistic, qualitative single case study of the reflections of a social work post-graduate student in a practical family therapy training situation, to illustrate the integration of person centered and systemic family therapy theory. The element of uncertainty of the therapist, is the focus of this study. The element of uncertainty, being a part of both the therapist and the therapeutic process, especially if challenged to make paradigm shifts and master new theory and skills, is identified, described, redefined and contructively applied. The focus is to highlight the use of the reframed element of uncertainty in empowering the therapist in the therapeutic process of family therapy. It is outlined how uncertainty can also be of value to empower the therapist to evolve an own unique therapeutic style. / Social work / M.A. (Geestesgesondheid)
