Disturbance and its effects on archaeological significance and integrity

Kennedy, Jason Alan 06 August 2011 (has links)
Significance and integrity are key concepts for archaeology, and how they are judged is determined by an archaeologist’s perceptions of disturbance. This thesis explicitly considers these concepts and how they relate to evolutionary theory and National Register eligibility. A site with known disturbance was chosen to determine whether it could be judged significant assuming that there was no disturbance. Controlled surface collection, magnetometer survey, excavation and landowner interview data were used to determine whether what made the site significant had been lost due to disturbance. The results indicate that the co-mingling of occupations in the plow zone normally would have prevented the site from being determined eligible. However, because of the clusters of Gulf Formational-period diagnostics and intact Early Archaic midden, the site was determined significant. If future work were to be performed, occupation-based work focusing on the artifact clusters and the Archaic midden is recommended.

Icke förväntad gestaltning av klassisk sång : En undersökning om att utforska röstens möjliga vägar till gestaltning genom sinnesstämning och röstkvalitéer / Unexpected interpretation in classical singing

Oskarsson, Elin January 2022 (has links)

Speaking Like a Brahmin: Social Aspects of a Register of Spoken Telugu

Miller, Bradley B. 15 March 2013 (has links) (PDF)
Among sociological studies in South Asia, frequent reference is made to caste as one of the greatest motivating factors in establishing, reinforcing, and creating social structure. This system of social hierarchy has, however, undergone drastic shifts and changes over the past decades (Dirks, 2001: 5) resulting in 'caste' as a term used to systematize concepts of social identity, community, and organization in India. The Brahmin caste, in particular, has undergone drastic changes as a result of social and political influence from without as well as from within, resulting in a conflict of identity (Bairy, 2010: 233).As a direct result of this conflict of caste identity, many individuals respond, act, and interact in ways that confirm, reject, or (re)establish their own individual identity within the greater scheme of their caste. The current study will examine specific ways in which Telugu Brahmins use linguistic markers to index socially acceptable, cultural ideologies. It will be explained how the use of lexical borrowings, markers of politeness and honorification, and emphatic aspiration index historical ideologies of Brahmin-ness. In indexing these ideologies, Brahmins identify with and associate their own actions in relation to traditional notions of those qualities assumed to be inherent in the Brahmin caste. Furthermore, meta-linguistic discourse will be examined, showing that recognition, acknowledgment of, and (mis)interpretation of a 'Brahmin register' is used to both mark intra-caste solidarity and reinforce social stereotypes about the caste.

Verb Usage in Egyptian Movies, Serials, and Blogs: A Case for Register Variation

White, Michael G 01 December 2019 (has links)
This thesis contributes to the discussion of register variation within Egyptian Arabic by focusing on the usage of verbs in blogs and transcripts of movies and television. Register variation has been extensively researched for English as well as several other languages; yet, the lexical and grammatical features that distinguish registers of Egyptian Arabic have not been analyzed. Several challenges have prevented such an analysis, among them the perceived lack of an automatic annotator and the uncertainty of results. In order to overcome these challenges, two corpora were compiled: one containing texts from blogs and the other transcripts of movies and television shows. With each corpus representing a potential register of the dialect, the verbs in each corpus were lemmatized and semi-automatically annotated for either aspect or mood. The verbs were then counted according to lemma, aspect, and mood in order to determine the extent of variance between the two corpora. The effectiveness of the state-of-the-art automatic annotator was also evaluated by comparing the counts it provided to those produced from corrections of its output. This thesis found that verbs are in fact used differently in the two corpora suggesting register variation and identified potential verbal features characteristic of each register. It also found that the automatic tagger produced counts that lead to the same conclusions as the corrected annotation.

Vývoj evidence nemovitostí v letech 1883-1993 / The development of the registration of immovables in 1883-1993

Peňázová, Soňa January 2012 (has links)
The thesis deals with the development of the register in the years 1883 - 1993. Real estate always played a very important role in human life and therefore their ownership played the key role. Not all the periods were favourable to property rights. This is a theme that is still current today, and each of the citizens can get acquainted in the practical life with the land register, which inter alia, contains the documents of the previous registers. That was one of the reasons why I chose this theme. Another reason was my not only professional, but also my private interest in the development of the real estate register. The purpose of the thesis is not to submit the coherent interpretation of the fabric. There are outlined the various important periods of the development of the real estate register in the thesis, including constitutionally-legal development of the ownership right. The core part of the work describes the individual principles and their development in the registers of real estate. The core part of the thesis describes the individual principles and their development in the register of real estate. There is also described in detail the contents of the land register and the contents of the register of real estate, because of the differences in the registration of property. Overall, the...

Saúde ocular de pacientes hansenianos após alta do registro ativo / Ocular healthy of Brazilian leprosy patients after discharge from active record

Bertrand, Romero Henrique Carvalho 22 April 2015 (has links)
Leprosy is still a major public health problem in Brazil. This study aimed to investigate ocular changes in leprosy patients after discharge from active record of the Secretariat of the Maranhão State Health. We evaluated 370 patients, 249 after discharge from active record (GI) and 121 in the active group (GA). Both groups underwent the same evaluation, considering categorical variables (gender, age, race, age of onset, duration, phase and type of treatment, recurrence and clinical form of leprosy) and Interrogation directed to the main signs and symptoms related to eye disease (red eye, burning, tearing, itching, foreign body sensation, discharge, pain, photophobia, feeling of blurred vision, feeling of dry eye). Use of systemic corticosteroids and specific eye examinations (visual acuity with and without optical correction, ectoscopy, slit lamp examination eyelid margin and anterior segment of the tear film breakup time, Schirmer test, test of eyelid function of the orbicularis muscle, esthesiometry corneal measured from the upper eyelid position (distance margin-reflex), measurement of intraocular pressure and fundus were also analised. Significant differences between groups (GA / GI) were found only in relation to complaints of visual impairment (75.2% / 64.3%), eye discharge (2.5% / 9.2%), the use of corticosteroids (28.1% / 41.0%) and eyelid margin-reflex distance (4,5±0,9 / 4,8±1,0). The ocular changes were common after discharge from active record as well as in the group with active disease, demonstrating the need for eye health for leprosy patient, both during active disease process as after you have completed your treatment, when your registration is inactive and therefore already considered cured by health services.

A High Performance Register Allocator for Vector Architectures with a Unified Register-Set

Su, Yu-Dan 29 June 2012 (has links)
This thesis describes a compiler optimization targeted for machines with unified, vector-based register sets. This optimization combines register allocation and instruction scheduling. It examines places where the code performs computations on scalar variables. The goal is to identify instances where the same operation is performed. For example, a program might calculate ¡§base+offset¡¨ and then calculate ¡§i+j¡¨. Even though these computations are unrelated, yet they use the same operator; if ¡§base¡¨ and ¡§i¡¨ are packed into one vector register, while ¡§offset¡¨ and ¡§j¡¨ are packed into another, then these two computations can be performed simultaneously through the vectors¡¦ parallel addition operation. This would reduce the execution time of the compiled code. Although other researchers have considered similar packing methods, their work has been limited by the hardware that they were studying. Such hardware usually imposed high costs for moving data between scalar and vector register banks. This present thesis, however, considers a novel hardware architecture that imposes no such costs. As a consequence, we are able to obtain significant speedups. The architecture that we consider is a Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) for embedded systems that is under development at this university. This GPU has a single register set for integers, float, and vectors.
