School Supports for Chinese International Students in American Christian High SchoolsMitchell, Karissa Joan Sywulka 19 January 2019 (has links)

Over the last decade, many Christian high schools in the United States have been adapting to an exponential increase of Chinese international students. Chinese families have shown increased interest and ability to send their teenage students to American high schools. Public high schools can only host an international student for a year, but private high schools can enroll the students multiple years. There have been few educational research studies for private high schools to refer to if they wanted to read research that would directly aid them in creating supports for their increasing amount of Chinese international students. This study’s purpose was to explore what school supports Chinese international secondary students attending Christian high schools in the United States perceived to be effective. Three Christian high schools in California participated, with a total of 23 Chinese international students completing a questionnaire in which they rated existing schools supports and answered open-ended questions. The students showed overall satisfaction with existing schools supports, while also having many ideas for improvement. The students rated the following supports most highly: opportunities to be in service projects, the performing arts, the opportunity to learn about the Bible in club meetings and camps, teachers providing help for international students, and connection with international student alumni. Students voiced that they strongly desired help building stronger connections with local students, more academic support, and more culturally appropriate food.

students and teachers, integrating the research line Education, Society and Culture,
Graduate Program in Education - Masters and Doctorate in Education from the Catholic
University of Goiás. This study aims to discuss the possibilities for realization of religious
education in the mandatory parameters/facultabilidade from the breakup of
catechetical/dogmatic heritage starting his new meanings and knowledge and their
relationship as a social/cultural phenomenon reflected by the Humanities and social,
breaking thus the denominational character of this discipline and integrating it to scientific
reflection, based on the unveiling of the meaning inferred from the stories told by Teachers of
Religious Education of Goiás public schools. This is a theoretical and empirical, qualitative,
narrative (auto)biographical research approach with the phenomenological approach. Thus
was established as the route reading and literature, the empirical part, narratives
(auto)biographies of eleven Teachers who work in religious education in state and municipal
schools , nominated in seven municipalities of the northwestern state of Goiás. The
theoretical framework relies on Saviani (2008); Derisso (2007, 2012); Oliveira et al. (2007);
Benjamin (1987a, 1987b); Halbwachs (1990) among others. The methodological approach
was built from Souza (2004, 2006, 2012); Merleau-Ponty (2011); Passegui; Abraham;
Delory-Momberger (2012); Connelly; Clandinin (1990), Clandinin; Connelly (2000). An
understanding of the experiences of the narrator approached the phenomenology through
which it seeks to describe and interpret the non- apparent and reveal the lived sense (as
student) and practiced (as a teacher) in this discipline. The historical trajectory and the
memories of the narrators you realize that Religious Education, present in almost every
school in the republican period, failed to materialize as Religious Education, but as religious
education forwarding service proselytizer of belief and doctrine. It was observed that: i) the
trajectory of Religious Education is demarcated by the dispute of religious and educational
field, ii) in Brazil never was religious education , since what is meant by this knowledge of the
phenomenon of religious pluralism and, iii) the current legislation even try to understand it as
a field of knowledge, is pervaded by the conception of theological and interfaith education, iv)
the possibility of its realization lies in the understanding of a pluralistic phenomenological
model to understand the school curriculum (the socialization of knowledge socially
constructed), and finally, v) and there was no by the Brazilian state a position that leads to
disruption between state and religion (mainly Christian) to make the secular republic in fact.
O percurso
metodológico foi construído a partir de Souza (2004; 2006, 2012), Merleau-Ponty (2011);
Passegui; Abrahão; Delory-Momberger (2012); Connelly; Clandinin (1990);
Clandinin;Connelly (2000).

Previous issue date: 2015-08-03 / This thesis aims to analyze the secular nature of the Brazilian state, focusing on the
provision of Religious Education in the public school system. Presents the
successive changes that accompany this curriculum component. For this, there was
a literature documentary and bibliographical research from contemporary documents:
laws and normative opinions of Education. On bibliographical research were
consulted scientific publications concerning the subject, drawn up between 1970 and
2013.The result of the document analysis on the relationship between secular state
and the religious education in recent years indicate that the regional spheres public
education systems seek to do away all forms of sectarianism and religious
proselytism that prioritizes either religious matrix. With this, there is the introduction of
a model of religious education with anthropological approach, which involves the
different religious arrays of Brazilian culture. The document analysis of scientific
publications support the need of religious education in the basic training of the
students, since this presents the religious diversity of the socio-cultural-historical
Brazilian context. In this educational approach has focused on the religious
phenomenon not only a religious matrix of Brazilian culture. This research indicates
changes as to the neutrality and religious impartiality in public spaces and the
commitment to secularism in education.
As

John Wesley and engaged aesthetics: transformative Christian educationIreland-Verwoerd, Francisca 21 June 2018 (has links)
The Church of the Nazarene has an identity problem. Increasingly, Nazarenes are unfamiliar with their denomination’s holiness theology, and a gap exists between what people say they believe—espoused theology—and what they practice—operant theology. I argue that aesthetic Christian education can play a significant role in decreasing the discrepancies between a person’s beliefs and practices. This kind of teaching and learning incorporates holistic aesthetic elements, which I call engaged aesthetics. Research in the neuroscience of visual perception seems to point to the possibilities that art can offer for transformative reflection. Christian education that features the viewing of art can explore these opportunities to reflect on faith-as-beliefs and faith-actions and to amend discrepancies at a personal and/or communal level. Since the Church of the Nazarene is grounded in John Wesley’s theology, I make the case for an aesthetic educational bridge between espoused and operant theology rooted in the engaged aesthetic of Wesley’s practical theology, and in affinity with Wesley’s experiential and affective epistemology.

Previous issue date: 2014-11-27 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / The Bill on Religious Education (nº 9475/1997) has changed the reality of religious education found on the current National Law on Education (Lei de Diretrizes e Base da Educação Nacional LDBEN, nº 9394/1996). The aforementioned Bill enacts new rules in which religious education becomes an integral part of elementary school education. The impact of this on the Brazilian educational system cannot be overlooked. Religious Education as a school discipline brings expressive contributions to the education of children and their notions of citizenship, especially in a religiously and culturally multifaceted society.
Although legally instituted as part of the national educational system, there are some agencies struggling to ban this discipline from the schools. This is a relevant issue, since the school context should be the ideal place where religious education meets (in a pedagogically suitable environment) its main public for an open-minded discussion of religious contents and religious diversity.
Having the support of the National Law on Education (Lei de Diretrizes e Base da Educação Nacional) as its mainstay, this work aims at investigating the current situation of this discipline in the city and district of Mogi Guaçu/SP, in order to make an inquire of its real promotion or inhibition in the specific educational context of Mogi Guaçu district / A Lei nº 9475/1997 dá nova redação ao artigo 33, da Lei de Diretrizes e Base da Educação Nacional LDBEN, Lei nº 9394/1996, na qual o Ensino Religioso passa a ser parte integrante da formação básica do cidadão, o que demonstra a sua relevância no contexto educacional brasileiro.

O gênero editorial e a polêmica do ensino religioso / The statements of the media on the implementation of religious educationCarvalho, Francisco de Assis 22 April 2008 (has links)
The objective of this survey is to analyze the statements of the media on the implementation of religious education at public schools in the State of Rio de Janeiro. The corpus consists of four editorials, including two from O Globo and two from Folha de São Paulo, all of them published in the period 2004/2004. The survey is focused on the observation of how the discursive strategies are analyzed in the development of this statement, which can be considered polemic, and how the argumentative process is developed, with the aim of highlighting ideological aspects of the relationships that are implicit in the production of such statements. We based our studies on the Argumentation Theory, on the indications of Perelman and Lucie Olbrechts- Tyteca (2000), and on the Critical Analysis of the Speech (ACD), according to researches of Teun A. van Dijk (1983: 2000: 2004 e 2005), among others. As every fact that is released by the press can not be separated from its specific production context, this work also considers how the decrees indicated the implementation of religious education at public schools in Rio de Janeiro within the political-educational parameters, to stress, by means of the analysis of the Corpus, the role the media (the press) plays as a builder of images and senses.

Previous issue date: 2010-12-13 / Universidade Presbiteriana Mackenzie / In 1988 Constitution and in the enactment of law 9,475 of July 22 1997, which altered LDB/1996 section 33, Religious Education is to be part of the grounds of citizenship education, integrating the curriculum of Elementary Public Schools. We intend, through the present work, to meet the constitutional grounds of the confessional school and confessional education, concluding that the Constitution and the rights protected in it, guarantee the existence, the functionality and viability of confessional educational in Brazil today. Religious Education classes, in the confessional approach, should not be limited to liturgical practice alone, once the school is not a church extension. However, the main concept of protestant confessional education, is centered on the student's formation as a whole and the method is the indissociable from teaching, from moral and mercy; having an integrated and integrating vision. The present work aims to identify the indissociable factor from teaching, moral, and mercy as fundamental grounds to Protestants Religious Education classes and to personality formation, through faith teaching. It was necessary to examine the historical and legislative evolution of Religious Education in the Brazilian Constitution and in Diretrizes e Bases da Educação Nacional, as well as identify the main ideas and practices concerning the subject. Furthermore, we seek the constitutional base to its existence and viability of confessional education. Thereafter, it also describes Comenius educational proposal to the full formation of the student, on the educational, social, moral, ethical and religious sphere, in order to, subsequently, identify the indissociable factor from teaching, moral and mercy as fundamental principle of confessional protestant teaching.

The Dynamics of Social Media Interaction in a Free-Choice Religious Education ExperienceWoodward, Scott C. 01 April 2017 (has links)
This Grounded Theory study explores how the use of social media influenced the dynamics of interaction in a free-choice religious education experience between a world religious leader and young adult learners. Results indicate that social media (a) enhanced proxy group interaction due to the increased visibility of leader-learner interactions to the entire group and the ability of learners to comment on, like, mention other learners, and share leader-learner interactions; (b) enabled active non-verbal interaction which allowed for social curation, peer validation, community reaction, and the non-verbal pushing of posts into the social media streams of those not participating in the event; (c) greatly enhanced dialogic interaction between learners and allowed for a safe hashtag-bound space for religious expression to occur online; and (d) enabled a theoretically infinite amount of learner-learner interactions on single comment nodes, referred to as multilogic interactions. Grounded Theory was also used to derive patterns from the data generated in this experience which were then abstracted and reconstituted into an explanatory and predictive theoretical framework referred to as Orbital Interaction Theory (OIT). OIT, as a design theory, predicts that three types or tiers of interaction will occur when three essential pedagogical design elements are used together—namely, a question and answer session with a highly respected and sought-after leader within a social media-bound context. Furthermore, I posit that three essential learner conditions are required for the success of OIT—namely, learner trust in the leader, a high degree of learner homogeneity, and high levels of civility. The preexistent nature of these learner conditions in religious education experiences makes them the most natural contexts for an OIT approach to be successful. It is precisely because of the challenge of achieving these three factors at comparable levels in non-religious free-choice learning contexts that makes the transferability of OIT into these contexts difficult. Finally, I posit that when the essential pedagogical design elements of OIT are combined with the essential learner conditions of OIT, the Optimum Conditions for Interaction (OCI) in OIT will be achieved with highly predictable results.

Choosing God, Choosing Schools: a Study of the Relationship between Parental Religiosity and School ChoiceLeukert, Aimee 01 January 2018 (has links)
Over the last several decades, school choice – in the context of educational systems that are available to choose from as well as the reasons why parents choose what they do for their child – has become a topic of interest to both educational researchers and the public at large. The Seventh-day Adventist school system, like other faith-based institutions, is uniquely positioned in this subject, as it is an educational organization framed by a religious denomination. In addition to the typical factors such as academic standards, curricular offerings and peer influence, the issue of school choice within this context also involves complex layers of culture and religiosity and spirituality.
Are parents able to disengage themselves from the trappings of those expectations and beliefs and objectively choose a school system for their child? Or are religious background and experience simply too embedded into one’s psyche – and, as an extension – one’s choices to ever fully disentangle that subtext from the decision-making process?
This mixed-methods study sought to better understand the relationship between parental religiosity and school choice, specifically within the Seventh-day Adventist denomination. In order to assess the influence of Adventist culture, doctrinal commitment and general religiosity, a cultural domain had to first be established. Following the methodology as laid out in cultural consensus theory, free-listing and rank-ordering tasks were given to two separate, geographically representative samples from across the continental United States.
Derived from those conversations, statements were then developed that captured characteristics and behavior of a member who adhered to traditional Seventh-day Adventist culture. Those statements were written into the survey instrument, alongside validated scales for general religiosity and Adventist doctrinal commitment.
The population for this study targeted any Seventh-day Adventist member in America who had K-12 school-aged children. The survey was developed in SurveyMonkey and distributed through church communiqué (websites, bulletins, announcements, etc.), official administrative channels such as ministerial department newsletters and video announcements, and social media. Over 1,000 responses came in and the data was analyzed through SPSS, specifically examining patterns of school choice among those with high or low general religiosity, doctrinal commitment and Adventist culture.
The results of the data analysis demonstrated clear and significant associations between several key variables and the dependent variable of school choice. Several variables, such as Adventist culture, doctrinal commitment and a parent’s own educational background, emerged as predictors for school choice when binary logistic regressions were conducted. Adventist culture proved to be a multi-factorial construct, interacting with other variables in different ways.
The conclusions from this study point to several implications for K-12 Adventist education, particularly in the area of marketing to Adventist families and further research could certainly explore that more fully.

Nurturing servant leaders in religious educationCyril, Lesley Anne January 2006 (has links)
The purpose of this thesis is to explore conditions under which the human spirit flowers in modern organisations. The topic of the thesis was sparked by prolonged study at the Master’s level of the writings of Robert K. Greenleaf, modern servant leadership theorist. Greenleaf was concerned with the ways and the conditions in which the human spirit flowers. He wrote a number of essays on the topic (Greenleaf, 1996b). He often questioned what organisations as they currently stood were doing to help people grow as whole people. As workers spend increasing amounts of time in the workplace, organisations continue to seek ways in which to increase employee satisfaction and decrease the compartmentalising of human experience. The geographical context of study is that of Aotearoa/New Zealand with participants selected from the Church Educational System of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Tāmaki-makau-rau/Auckland region. The Church Educational System, or CES, is a worldwide religious education provider headquartered in the Western United States. The context for study was chosen based on my perceived personal growth as a student for nine years in the CES programmes and my desire to understand how the programme was administered in Aotearoa/New Zealand. The project employs a qualitative methodology using as primary data gathering methods in-depth interviews with three CES directors, three focus groups made up of sixteen volunteer teachers, classroom observations, and document analysis. Using Greenleaf’s descriptions of the servant leader as a central focus, I attempt through this qualitative study to address the central research question: How does the Church Educational System (CES) nurture servant leaders? The central metaphor of the garden was used in processing and analysing data. The garden metaphor was intended to assist in the conceptualisation of relationships of service as they are at work in the lives of participants. Identified relationships of service from the findings were between participants co-workers (plants), love (life-force), Jesus Christ (sun), The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (plot), purpose (strength), Aotearoa/New Zealand (soil), exemplars (canopy), experience (seasons), Church Educational System (gardener), positions, training, programmes (gardener tools), growth (colour/aroma/fruit), knowledge (water), and organisational care (pruning/transplanting). Findings indicated that nurturing in the Church Educational System is influenced by the ability of the organisation to bring people together in meaningful ways. Findings also show that understanding relationships of service that make up whole people may be an important step for organisations in the nurturing of servant leaders. Nurturing in the CES appears to be taking place in three primary areas: balancing, renewal, and regeneration. The findings of this study have significance for those inside and outside of the CES. A chapter is dedicated to exploring possible application of findings in variant organisational contexts. Providing consistent formal and informal opportunities for sharing in spirit and intellect at the organisational level appears to be a key in the nurturing of servant leaders in organisations.
