Vozes narrativas em A Distant Shore de Caryl Phillips / Narrative voices in A distant shore by Caryl Phillips

Márcia Pedreira 26 September 2008 (has links)
Through shifts in point-of-view, among other literary resources, the Author alternates and intertwines narratives of the experiences of two characters from contrasting cultural formations with narratives of their thoughts about the past, themselves, each other and the various settings in which they act. These spheres are rendered as incongruent with the idea of a world without borders, so often celebrated in late modernity. The aim of this thesis is to discuss how elements of present-day historical and psychological experience solidify in the form of this particular contemporary novel

Propojení literární a hudební balady v hudební výchově na 2. stupni ZŠ / The linking of literary and musical ballads in music education at second stage of elementary school

Tomášková, Laura January 2021 (has links)
The diploma thesis The linking of literary and musical ballads in music education at the second stage of elementary school delineates the general definition of the ballad genre from the literary and musical point of view. The work demonstrates the interaction of both arts during the creation of this genre, inferring from several professional publications. It also clarifies the main branches of the genre, especially the folk ballad and the artificial ballad. Main Czech authors contributing to these genres are introduced within each of these ballads. Based on the overview of Czech music authors, the examples of musical forms, inspired by verbal art and chosen by these authors for their compositions, are described. Attention is paid to the pedagogically psychological aspect of the ballad, which demonstrates the significant influence of this genre on the development of the individual competencies of the pupil at the second stage of elementary school. The contribution of the ballad to educational areas and its benefits on mutual school subject relationships are discussed in several points. This diploma thesis shows evidence of the interaction of verbal and musical art considering the overview of the ballad genre development and its music rendition. The text proves contribution of the ballad and its...

Exploring opportunities of complex LED colour mix systems for lighting in the art. Fine colour tuning a painting

Gimenez Catalán, Juan Pedro January 2020 (has links)
Museums and the performing arts have very specific lighting requirements, not only in the technical aspects of their presentation, but also in regard to the communication and interpretation of artistic concepts. Thus, the design intent might have many different perspectives whereas the idea of being “neutral” is more complex to define. One of the critical aspects for the visual experience of art is colour, a subjective experience that can be conceptually approached from many perspectives, from science to the artistic realm.  This study starts by setting a theoretical framework in colour human vision, colour theory and colourimetry; and how this can be applied to lighting design concepts for exhibitions. The experimental part of this work explores some of the opportunities of complex LED colour mix systems in working with fine colour tuning and metamers. This investigation focusses on both the creation of the light stimuli and on how these lighting conditions can influence the perception and interpretation of a painting. In spite of its subjectivity, the perception of the art is contextualized with the colour theory background provided, the quantitative measurements performed and the results of an online survey. Additionally, the artist is interviewed in an attempt to gather views from the origin of the artwork to the viewer interpretation. This work might be useful to those with interest in the opportunities that quality LED technology, specifically colour mixing, offer for lighting design in exhibition and theatre environment. In fact, the complexity of exhibition lighting provides a perfect environment for research and experimentation, where improving the viewer experience is becoming an essential factor for museology.

The practice of extraordinary rendition : increasing accountability and oversight

Manawalia, Mehek 19 July 2012 (has links)
Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / Since the 9/11 terrorist attacks, the United States has transferred close to a hundred individuals suspected of terrorism to foreign jurisdictions through a process known as extraordinary rendition. This is an infamous program that allows for the transfer of individuals to a foreign jurisdiction for interrogation, detention, or trial. While the use of extraordinary rendition attracts widespread controversy regarding its use and legality, it remains a vital tool for combating international terrorism. Evidence in this thesis lends support to extraordinary rendition program, but recognizes that while the program strengthens the country’s ability to gather vital intelligence to combat terrorism, there are methods to improve the program. The extraordinary rendition program requires an assessment of the totality of circumstances before a extraordinary rendition is permitted; reliance on diplomatic assurances from countries that hold a good human rights record; and subsequent monitoring of individuals rendered to foreign states to ensure that transfers comply with U.S. and international law. Evidence suggests that extraordinary rendition aids in the ability to gather sensitive intelligence and serves as a gathering tool used by American presidents to preserve freedom and peace; however, in the eyes of critics, this program represents a perversely autonomous and un-American legal maneuver that avoids due process. This thesis seeks to discuss common misconceptions associated with the extraordinary rendition program and identify the major points of controversy. The first part explores the history of the extraordinary rendition program and provides an understanding of its roots and procedures. The second part, discusses the executive branch’s attempts to conduct extraordinary renditions morally and responsibly, and examines the legal oversight and accountability gaps surrounding the program. Part three identifies the line of authority empowering the President to conduct extraordinary renditions. It also outlines the struggle of the legislative, judicial and executive branches to strengthen the extraordinary rendition program’s compliance with the rule of law by increasing oversight and accountability. Finally, Part four discusses the future of the extraordinary rendition program. The discussion presents possible solutions to correct oversight and accountability problems and suggests a multi-faceted approach that raises the bar for extraordinary renditions, thereby closing the oversight and accountability gaps.

Interprétation, phrasé et rhétorique vocale dans la chanson française depuis 1950 : expliciter l’indicible de la voix / The performance, the phrasing and the vocal rhetoric of the French song since 1950 : clarifying the inexpressible of the voice

Chabot-Canet, Céline 27 June 2013 (has links)
The present thesis focuses on the study of the song not in its word and music dialectic but through the acquisition of a third entity : the vocal rendition. The point is to reveal its critical importance and richness and make it legitimate as a subject of study as the result of the implementation of a specific methodological and lexical protocol that allows the analysis – as with the composition – although its changeable nature is not conducive to theorizing. Considered as a complex object (according to Edgar Morin’s terminology), vocal rendition is submitted to the crossfire of various disciplines (musicology, linguistics, rhetoric, acoustics) in order to favour as far as it is possible its objectivization. Within the framework of musicology, the use of computer tools makes it possible to establish a complementarity between the perspectives of social sciences and exact sciences, to catch and analyse the peculiarities of the performances both in their dominant or agogic characters, their connexions to the score, their combinatorial complexity within the meta-parameters (timbre, rhythm, phrasing), as well as the dialogical tensions which run through them (variation and repetition, melodicity and noise integration, singing and speaking parts). Thanks to the existence of a large body of French-speaking singers (from Rive Gauche style to Nouvelle chanson française) it is possible by studying studio and concert recordings to grasp the irreducible specificity of everyone (what is issued from a unique body) as well as the great underlying networks of stylistic relationships. Disclosed by the semeiological perspective, around the notions of strategy and performance designs, vocal rhetoric, the way to induce pathos and to express ethos, there emerges a typology of performing styles that is open to considering the intrinsic originality of each performer and integrating further generic developments.

LJUSFÄRGMÄTTNADENS PÅVERKAN PÅ ENERGIEFFEKTIVITET OCH TRYGGHETSKÄNSLA / INCREASED LIGHT COLOR SATURATIONS EFFECT ON ENERGY EFFICACY AND FEELING OF SAFTEY

Jidberg, Hugo, Schön, Elias January 2023 (has links)
The high electricity prices are a talked about issue in today's society where many peoplefind themselves in a critical situation as a result of them. In a more long-termperspective, Sweden faces a goal of a comprehensive transformation of the energysystem. Lighting is a contributing factor to the energy system and energy use. Light inthe form of lighting is important for the visibility of objects and the surroundings, whichis a contributing factor to safety in society. The stock market price for electricity prices in December 2022 shows a sharp risethroughout Sweden and the forecast for today's electricity prices continues to rise(Konsumenternas, 2022). Energy consumption has a direct correlation to electricitycosts and dimmed LED light sources lead to lower energy consumption (Jägerbrand,2011). An important aspect in how the sense of safety, security and architecture isemphasized is the color rendering and light level of the lighting. A study carried out byMinchen et al (2020) proves that a light source with an increased color saturation and alower used illuminance can give rise to an equivalent visibility of a board as a lightsource with lower color saturation and higher illuminance. The aim is to identify and describe previous areas of knowledge about the colorsaturation and color reproduction of light sources. Tentative theory must be tested tosee if future outcomes can be predicted with the aim of lowering the light level andenergy consumption through increased color saturation and its impact on visibility andperceived safety. In order to achieve the aim and answer the study's questions, a literature search has beencarried out, in both primary and secondary sources, with keywords and search stringsin the scientific database Web of science together with the help of the snowball methodand snowball technique. In addition, available light source data from light sourcesuppliers has been analyzed to investigate the correlation between energy consumptionand color saturation. In order to further investigate the subject and answer the questions,an experiment was carried out with two different lighting scenarios of a modeled tunnel.During the experiment, participants contributed quantitative and qualitative data byanswering questionnaires for these scenarios. The study shows that light color saturation has an impact on the energy efficiency oflight sources and that different interpretations of how light color saturation and lightlevel affect the perceived visibility. The study indicates that a lower light level can beapplied without negatively affecting safety if other factors for the environment are takeninto account, where one of the contributing factors may be light color saturation.
