Objectives: Carotid artery stenting (CAS) has become an alternative treatment for patients presenting symptomatic carotid artery stenosis. The improvement in clinical outcomes with CAS has been associated with the development of embolic protection devices. The trial aim is to compare flow-reversal versus filter protection during CAS through femoral access. Methods: Patients were randomly enrolled in CAS using flow-reversal or filter protection. The primary endpoints were the incidence, number and size of new ischemic brain lesions after CAS. The secondary endpoints included major adverse cardiac and cerebrovascular events (MACCE), transient ischemic attack (TIA) and definitive ischemic brain lesions on fluid-attenuated inversion recovery magnetic resonance image (FLAIR-MRI) at a three-month follow-up. Ischemic brain lesions were assessed by a 3T-MRI. Neurological outcomes were evaluated by means of the National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) and the modified Rankin Scale (mRS). Results: Forty consecutive patients were randomly assigned. Compared to flow-reversal (n=21), filter protection (n=19) resulted in a significant reduction in the incidence (15.8% vs. 47.6%, p=0.03), number (0.73 vs. 2.6, p=0.05) and size (0.81 vs. 2.23 mm, p=0.05) of new ischemic brain lesions. Two patients, one from each group, presented TIA at the three-month follow-up. There were no MACCE in the hospital or at the three-month follow-up. Conclusions: In this small sample size trial, filter protection was more effective than flow-reversal in reducing ischemic brain lesions during CAS through femoral approach.

[en] COMPARISON BETWEEN PETROLEUM TAXATION: CONCESSIONARY AND SHARING / [pt] UMA COMPARAÇÃO ENTRE OS REGIMES DE TAXAÇÃO SOBRE O PETRÓLEO: CONCESSÃO E PARTILHAMARCELA LOBO FRANCISCO 25 October 2011 (has links)
A Noruega e a Indonésia
[en] Government choice of which taxation regime to adopt on oil determines
how the revenue generated by the activity of exploring and producing this oil is
shared between the State and private investors. From the point of view of the
State, it is extremely important to choose a regime that does not detract private
investors and that is also capable of generating enough revenue to bolster the
country´s economy and promote the well-being of its population. The present
work studies the main taxation regimes on oil, identifying how the income
generated by this product is distributed between government and private investors.
It also calculates the level of risk for agents in both regimes analysed. The aim is
to verify if these regimes comply with the main requirements necessary for a
regime to be considered efficient − simplicity and neutrality – and if there is a
relation between the kind of regime and the variables mentioned above. The main
taxation regimes in the world are concession and sharing. The regimes adopted by
Australia, Norway, Brazil and Indonesia were studied. The first three countries
adopt the concession regime, while the latter adopts the sharing one. The
Australian regime – in which government remuneration was obtained by two taxes
− was the simplest of all analysed regimes, while that of Indonesia – in which
government remuneration was obtained by five taxes − was the most complex.
The Brazilian regime is considered to be simple: government revenue is obtained
by means of three taxes. The distribution of the revenue generated by oil
exploration and production is more balanced in Australia, where private investors
receive around 16.6% and the government around 88.4%. In Brazil private
investors gain 9.16% and the government 90.84%.The regimes in Norway and
Indonesia penalize the private investor; the field presents a positive net current
value prior to taxes and negative after taxes. Brazil and Australia displayed
positive net current value prior to and after taxes levied. The findings suggest that there is no relation between the kind of regime and the following variables: equity
in income distribution, neutrality, and investor and government risk. Countries
that adopt the same regime – concession – presented different characteristics. The
regime adopted by Norway penalized the private investor, while that of Australia
distributed revenues more equitably. As regards risk, the regime with greatest
risks for private investors was the Indonesian, while the one with least risks was
the Australian. Brazil ranked third in both categories. Thus, a regime cannot be
considered more efficient than another. The main issue is how taxes are levied
within each regime. Given that the Brazilian oil reserve has reached
unprecedented levels, discussion should focus on how oil will be taxed in the
present regime (concession), rather than on the taxation regime adopted.

[en] REAL OPTIONS ANALYSIS OF STEEL SECTOR PROJECTS: THE BRAZILIAN CASE / [pt] OPÇÕES REAIS NA SIDERURGIA: O CASO BRASILEIROLUIZ DE MAGALHAES OZORIO 27 January 2011 (has links)
A presença
[en] This work analyzes the applicability of the real options method in the
valuation of investments in steel industry, and compares the outcomes with the
traditional methods of project evaluation. Being steel a commodity with high price
volatility and great changeability in its demand, the return of steel projects are
stochastic. The presence of these uncertainties, combined with the existing set of
managerial flexibilities in the steel productive processes, create an adequate
environment to emerge valuable real options that consequently may interfere
significantly with the project values and the decision making process in the steel
industry investments. Besides contemplating the recognition of the main existing
real options in the steel sector and prescribing methodologies to evaluate them, the
work analyzes stochastic methods that show the best fit to steel price performance,
considering the available empirical data existing in the market. As application of
the discussed methodologies in the course of the thesis the evaluation of two
diferent kinds of real options in the steel industry are presented - shut down
options in electrical furnace plants and switch of product in integrated plants -
using three different types of sthocastic processes: GBM, MRM and MRM with
Drift. The obtained results showed that the evaluated managerial flexibilities can
agregate significantily the created value in steel projects and it also may be
observed the relevance of the choice of stochastic process not only in the projects
value but in the options value as well.

maiores ganhos, antes desprezados. / [en] In the model of Research and Development (R & D) for the pharmaceutical
industry, considering patent protection, Schwartz made an important contribution to the
valuation of a company. Besides considering the possibility of catastrophic events, the
author applied a simple tool, but at the same time very powerful, hitherto not used in the
literature for this purpose (called Least Squares Monte Carlo). In the last stage of its type
(post patent), the author approaches the process with a constant value (obtained via an
estimate), believing that the market immediately absolve the technology and, thus, the
simplification does not significantly change the outcome final. Canted, with the advance
of globalization and the media, the market has become increasingly dynamic and
competitive. Since the classic tactics have become accessible to all (egg scale production
or cut costs), they are no longer sufficient to maintain the profitability of a company.
Several renowned scholars and institutions (such as BNDES) observed that, to survive
this, companies must overcome competition through a set of skills called intangibles,
which in most cases is a complex operation. Because of these evidences the absorption of
new technology is not necessarily an immediate activity (contrary to the assumptions of
Schwartz). Aiming at a better description of reality, this study proposes a mathematical
processing (no longer approaching the post-patent) and the algorithmic model of
Schwartz. The model was created from a set of concepts of microeconomics, Real
Options and Metrics Assessment of BNDES, previously developed with the assistance of
staff from BNDES. The simulation results of the theoretical example, which was
considered an IT company that aims to develop a new technology, did not show any
inconsistency, indicating thus no error in the mathematical or algorithmic perspective and
confirming at the same time, importance of intangible assets, which, in turn, lead to the
greatest earnings before slighted.

[en] THE OPTION VALUE OF THE FLEX-FUEL CAR IN DIFFERENT GEOGRAPHIC REGIONS OF BRAZIL: APPLICATION OF REAL OPTIONS THEORY WITH MRM / [pt] O VALOR DA OPÇÃO DO CARRO FLEX POR REGIÃO GEOGRÁFICA DO BRASIL: UMA APLICAÇÃO DO TOR COM MRMCAROLINA CALDAS DO NASCIMENTO 13 August 2012 (has links)
as cinco regiões geográficas do Brasil: Nordeste, Norte, Centro-Oeste, Sudeste e
Sul.
automóvel do consumidor dessas regiões.
[en] The introduction of the Flex-fuel car to the Brazilian market in 2003
changed the way of decision of the customers. If before it was necessary to choose
the fuel by the kind of vehicle, fueled only by gas or only by sugarcane ethanol,
today it is possible to choose one kind of car with two fuel possibilities. The Flexfuel
car can run with gas, sugarcane ethanol or any mix of those fuels at any
proportion. This resulting flexibility generates an economic advantage for the
car’s owners, but what are the finance benefits of having a Flex-fuel car in
comparison to a gas-powered car? Where is geographically located the owner
which benefits more from this flexibility? This study applies the Real Option
method to analyze the option value of the Flex-fuel cars in each of the five
geographic regions of Brazil: Northeast, North, Central-West, Southeast and
South. It regards regional prices differences and their customer’s car preference.
For this purpose, it considers that the historical fuel prices are stochastic and
follow the Arithmetic Mean Reverting diffusion process. Monte Carlo Simulation
provides the forecasted fuel prices and option values. The results show that the
option to choose the cheapest fuel at the refueling moment adds significant value
for the owner of all the regions and car models considered. The Southeast region
is the most benefited from it.

[pt] AVALIAÇÃO DE PROJETO DE INVESTIMENTO EM USINA TERMELÉTRICA À CAPIM-ELEFANTE: UMA ABORDAGEM PELA TEORIA DE OPÇÕES REAIS / [en] EVALUATING AN ELEPHANT GRASS POWER PLANT INVESTMENT: PROJECT USING THE REAL OPTIONS THEORY APPROACHCARLOS FREDERICO VANDERLINDE TARRISSE DA FONTOURA 22 September 2011 (has links)
projeto. / [en] Brazil is a country whose energy matrix is strongly dependent on generation
by hydropower plants. Within this scenario, the use of biomass power plants
represents an attractive alternative, since it associates the diversification of the
Brazilian energy matrix with the use of renewable sources, and is not as polluting
as their counterparts moved to non-renewable fossil fuels such as oil and gas. This
study aimed to conduct the economic evaluation of an investment in a project of a
biomass power plant, considering strategies with and without managerial and
operational flexibilities, in order to identify the best methodology for evaluating
the project in question. In the strategy without flexibilities, the discounted cash
flow method was adopted. In the strategies with uncertainties and flexibilities, the
uncertainties related to the electricity market and flexibilities related to the
possibility of selling the electricity generated in the long or short term markets
were incorporated into the analysis. Moreover, there is the possibility of installing
a briquetting plant, which would allow the plant to choose between selling
electricity in the short term market or briquettes, whichever is more economically
interesting. The results indicate that the existence of uncertainties and managerial
flexibilities increases the value of the project and reduces significantly the risk of
failure, which reinforces the idea that the evaluation with real options, though
more complex, can be more appropriate to determine the actual value of the
project.

[en] This research intends on to use the Symbolic Regression by
Genetic
Programming to find an analytical equation that represents
an Optimal Exercise
Boundary for an option of an asset having its price
behavior simulated by a
stochastic process known as Mean Reversion Process (MRP).
To calculate an option value since its acquisition until
its maturity,
normally is used to calculate the Optimal Exercise
Boundary. This frontier
separates along the time the decision to exercise the
option or not.
Knowing there already are analytical solutions used to
calculate the
Optimal Exercise Boundary when the asset price follows the
Geometric
Brownian Motion, and such general solution was not found
yet to MRP, in this
work, it was proposed the use of Genetic Programming to
find such analytical
solution.
The Genetic Programming used an amount of samples from
optimal
exercise curves parameterized according the change in the
volatility and risk
free interest rate, to find an analytical function that
represents Optimal Exercise
Boundary, achieving satisfactory results.
