[en] REAL OPTIONS APPLICATION ON INTEGRATED CIRCUITS SECTOR / [pt] APLICAÇÃO DE OPÇÕES REAIS AO SETOR DE CIRCUITOS INTEGRADOSIRECE FRAGA KAUSS LOUREIRO 11 February 2011 (has links)
informática e passou a permear setores diversos.
Dadas as
de start-up.
[en] Electronic industry is getting more important in world economy. The use
of electronic parts is not an exclusive use of information technology but also of
many sectors. It is becoming more important to attract investments in integrated
circuits in order to differentiate products, to invest in research and development
and even to increase brasilian industry competitiveness. In this context, this
study intends to evaluate an investment opportunity of an integrated circuits
company with a numeric example. Considering many uncertainties that exist on
a project like this, real options theory was used in order to analyse an integrated
circuits start-up investment. It is important to mention that the volatility of the
return of a group of companies was used as a proxy to obtain the underlying
risky asset volatility, as the underlying risky asset is the cash flow of an
integrated circuits company built in Brazil. Therefore, this methodology was
implemented to find a start-up project volatility. With this estimated volatility,
the real options values were calculated based on the binomial model proposed
by Cox, Ross & Rubinstein. Results show that incorporating uncertainties and
analysing wait and expansion options raise substantial value to the project.

[en] EXPERIMENTAL STUDY OF TECHNIQUES FOR PORTFOLIO OPTIMIZATION / [pt] ESTUDO EXPERIMENTAL DE TÉCNICAS PARA OTIMIZAÇÃO DE CARTEIRASTHUENER ARMANDO DA SILVA 27 January 2011 (has links)
Nessa dissertação investigamos variações do modelo
[en] Markowitz in 1959 structured the foundations of the modern portfolio theory
through the analysis of risk and return of assets. Now, after five decades his theory
is still widely used as a basis for building portfolios. In this thesis we investigate
variations of the Markowitz model for portfolio selection from both a theoretical
and practical point of view. We analyzed the impact of different methods for the
prediction of risk and return, transaction costs, target risk and frequency of revision
of the portfolio. In order to test and analyze the strategies studied we implemented
a robust and versatile simulator and created a database with daily data of 41 assets
from the Brazilian stock exchange, CDI and IBOVESPA.

[en] COMPARISON BETWEEN PETROLEUM TAXATION: CONCESSIONARY AND SHARING / [pt] UMA COMPARAÇÃO ENTRE OS REGIMES DE TAXAÇÃO SOBRE O PETRÓLEO: CONCESSÃO E PARTILHAMARCELA LOBO FRANCISCO 25 October 2011 (has links)
A Noruega e a Indonésia
[en] Government choice of which taxation regime to adopt on oil determines
how the revenue generated by the activity of exploring and producing this oil is
shared between the State and private investors. From the point of view of the
State, it is extremely important to choose a regime that does not detract private
investors and that is also capable of generating enough revenue to bolster the
country´s economy and promote the well-being of its population. The present
work studies the main taxation regimes on oil, identifying how the income
generated by this product is distributed between government and private investors.
It also calculates the level of risk for agents in both regimes analysed. The aim is
to verify if these regimes comply with the main requirements necessary for a
regime to be considered efficient − simplicity and neutrality – and if there is a
relation between the kind of regime and the variables mentioned above. The main
taxation regimes in the world are concession and sharing. The regimes adopted by
Australia, Norway, Brazil and Indonesia were studied. The first three countries
adopt the concession regime, while the latter adopts the sharing one. The
Australian regime – in which government remuneration was obtained by two taxes
− was the simplest of all analysed regimes, while that of Indonesia – in which
government remuneration was obtained by five taxes − was the most complex.
The Brazilian regime is considered to be simple: government revenue is obtained
by means of three taxes. The distribution of the revenue generated by oil
exploration and production is more balanced in Australia, where private investors
receive around 16.6% and the government around 88.4%. In Brazil private
investors gain 9.16% and the government 90.84%.The regimes in Norway and
Indonesia penalize the private investor; the field presents a positive net current
value prior to taxes and negative after taxes. Brazil and Australia displayed
positive net current value prior to and after taxes levied. The findings suggest that there is no relation between the kind of regime and the following variables: equity
in income distribution, neutrality, and investor and government risk. Countries
that adopt the same regime – concession – presented different characteristics. The
regime adopted by Norway penalized the private investor, while that of Australia
distributed revenues more equitably. As regards risk, the regime with greatest
risks for private investors was the Indonesian, while the one with least risks was
the Australian. Brazil ranked third in both categories. Thus, a regime cannot be
considered more efficient than another. The main issue is how taxes are levied
within each regime. Given that the Brazilian oil reserve has reached
unprecedented levels, discussion should focus on how oil will be taxed in the
present regime (concession), rather than on the taxation regime adopted.

[en] AN APPLICATION OF REAL OPTIONS THEORY TO THE HIGH SPEED RAIL BETWEEN RIO DE JANEIRO AND CAMPINAS / [pt] UMA APLICAÇÃO DA TEORIA DAS OPÇÕES REAIS AO CASO DO TREM DE ALTA VELOCIDADE RIO-CAMPINASANA CAROLINA KANEMARU LOPES 11 January 2011 (has links)
Neste trabalho é aplicada a
[en] The high speed rail between Rio de Janeiro and Campinas will be auctioned
in 2010 as a concession for a 40 year period. The project has an estimated total
investment of R$34.6bi, of which R$7bi consists of private equity. However,
being a greenfield railway, the project presents high uncertainty regarding future
traffic, possibly compromising its economic feasibility and discouraging the
private sector’s participation. Although the NPV of the project for the stakeholder
is a positive R$49mi, it is estimated that there is a 50.8% probability of it being
negative, which represents a significant risk for the private investor. One way to
increase the project’s attractiveness is through minimum revenue government
guarantees, where a demand floor for each year is established according to a
percentage of projected demand within the legal framework of a Public-Private
Partnership (PPP). This dissertation applies Real Options Theory to value the
project assuming such government guarantee. It is shown that a 60% guarantee
reduces the risk of investor loss from 50.8% to 33.2%, contributing to the
economic and financial feasibility of the project. Furthermore, increasing levels of
guarantees have a higher impact on risk and also imply higher costs for the
government.

[en] DECISIONS TO INVEST IN WATERWAY TERMINALS FOR OIL AND OIL PRODUCTS / [pt] DECISÕES DE INVESTIMENTO EM TERMINAIS AQUAVIÁRIOS DE PETRÓLEO E DERIVADOS22 March 2021 (has links)
[en] Decisions to invest in waterway terminals, where oil and oil products are moved and stored, should take into account aspects related to the logistics costs involved, as well as the existence of managerial flexibilities. The main objective of this work is to propose a methodology for the evaluation of investments for this type of unit with emphasis on future uncertainties and to evaluate a selected project in a Brazilian waterway terminal with the purpose of solving one of its main restrictions that ends up generating excessive costs of demurrage to the operation. The proposed step-by-step should be reflected in other analyzes of the oil and gas company, whose subsidiary operates the terminal in question. The economic evaluation of the project takes into account the modeling of uncertainties and the existing flexibilities, in the light of the Real Options Theory. The relevance of this work to the literature is the application of an evaluation of Real Options in a project of a Brazilian private waterway terminal, a scenario little explored by the authors of this area in the country, with emphasis on the occupation of its berths and the costs of demurrage. The contribution is made through the proposed framework for analysis of investments in terminals and the quantification of gains with the implementation of the evaluated project, which eliminates some current operational restrictions. In addition, the oil and gas company is expected to disclose the methodology internally and to formally adopt it in its Logistics investment assessments, including initiating a process of cultural change in the areas responsible for the projects and in the decision makers. The development of the study involves statistical data collection and analysis, interviews with terminal operators and company specialists, deepening of Real Options techniques, sensitivity analysis in the relevant variables and discussion with other collaborators interested in the subject. The results show that there is value in waiting for the investment, analyzed here in two scales.
