Nedelcu, Alexandra 05 1900 (has links)
Music is an important part of every known culture, and its universality raises the question of a possible biological basis. Musical disorders, such as congenital amusia, offer compelling insight into these roots. In order to examine the genetic basis of this phenotype, we used a classical twin study paradigm. Our study had two main goals: (a) investigate if identical (monozygotic; MZ) co-twins perform more similarly on auditory and musical tasks than non-identical (dizygotic; DZ) co-twins and (b) explore the twins’ musical environments in order to better understand the contribution of environmental versus genetic factors in the differences underlying musical abilities. In addition, we sought to replicate previous investigations that demonstrated impaired pitch processing but intact rhythm perception in amusic participants. To do so, we tested eight pairs of MZ and six pairs of DZ twins in which at least one of the co-twins was potentially amusic. Participants completed an online amusia test, a pitch detection task and a singing task. We observed no performance or musical environment differences between MZ and DZ twins, suggesting that musical abilities might be more influenced by the twins’ shared environment than by genetic factors. In addition, and as reported in previous studies, amusics made pitch processing errors in both perception and production, but rhythmic perception was preserved. Future studies, particularly those with access to larger twin samples, will be able to further elucidate the roles of environmental and genetic factors in the amusic phenotype.

Rhythmic arm cycling induces short-term plasticity of the soleus H-reflex amplitude

Javanrohbakhsh, Fatemeh Bahar 30 November 2007 (has links)
Plasticity in spinal networks has been proposed as a means to permit motor skill learning and recovery after central nervous system disorders. This plasticity is significantly driven by input from the periphery (Wolpaw & Carp, 2006). For instance, attenuation of soleus Hoffmann (H) reflex can last beyond the period of different types of conditioning via putative presynaptic inhibition (Brooke et al., 1997). Interestingly, rhythmic arm cycling can also attenuate soleus H-reflex via interlimb connections and presynaptic pathways (Frigon, Collins, & Zehr, 2004). However, it remains to be studied if this attenuation is maintained beyond the period of arm cycling. In this study, we hypothesized that excitability of H-reflex pathway would remain suppressed after cessation of arm cycling. Subjects were seated with their trunk and feet fixed at a neutral position. Using an arm ergometer, they cycled at 1Hz for 30min. H-reflexes were evoked via stimulation of the tibial nerve in the popliteal fossa at 5 minute intervals. These intervals began prior to the cycling and continued during cycling and up to 30 minutes iv after termination of cycling (n=12). Besides soleus muscle, electromyography was recorded from tibialis anterior, vastus lateralis and biceps femoris. Stimulation was set to evoke an M-wave which evoked an H-reflex on the ascending limb of the recruitment curve (size was 75% Hmax) obtained prior to cycling. The M-wave amplitude was maintained throughout all trials by monitoring and adjusting the level of stimulation intensity. All H-reflex and M-wave data were normalized to the averaged Mmax to reduce inter –subject variability. The main result was that the suppression of H-reflex amplitude persisted beyond the period of arm cycling. H-reflex amplitudes were significantly (p<0.05) smaller up to 20 min after arm cycling had stopped. This suggests that arm cycling can induce plastic adaptation in the soleus H-reflex pathway that persists well beyond the period of conditioning. Also, in an additional experiment (n=8), the prolonged effect of arm cycling combined with superficial radial (SR) nerve stimulation was investigated. Interestingly, this cutaneous nerve stimulation cancelled out the prolonged suppression of H-reflex amplitude induced by arm cycling. Since SR nerve stimulation facilitates soleus H-reflex via reductions in the level of Ia presynaptic inhibition (Zehr, Hoogenboom, Frigon, & Collins, 2004), persistence in presynaptic inhibitory pathways is suggested as an underlying neural mechanism. These results have relevance for optimizing rehabilitation techniques in the treatment of spasticity which is known to be related to the H-reflex size (Levin & Hui-Chan, 1993).

Základy sportovní přípravy v moderní gymnastice / Basic physical preparation in rhythmic gymnastics

Šimůnková, Iveta January 2014 (has links)
of disertation Rhythmic gymnastics (RG) is the only Olympia sport of girls and women and it is characterized by precision, fluency and elegance of movement that emphasizes feminine beauty and grace. At present, there is no coherent concept of long-term sports training of talented gymnasts in Czech RG. The outflow of athletes is evident especially during prepubescence. Basic RG preparation aims gradual development of motor abilities, practice of sports (gymnastics) skills and the beginning of specialized techniques based on the principle of comprehensive movement base. This period (in rhythmic gymnastics between 7-9 years of gymnasts) for further performance growth is very substantial, in terms of content and in terms of training forms and influence of trainers (coaches). Defining the content of movement and gymnastic activities determines the path of development athletes and also defines (for caoches) performance criteria in each age category. The aim of disertation was to verify correspondence between published scientific theories and trainers experience of coaching using the Repertory Grid Technique. Along the way sixteen semi-structured interviews with selected experts was achieved interpersonal and intrapersonal data. Experts in the preparation of RG agreed on the fact that in practice a set of...

Herrlein, Julio Cesar da Silva January 2018 (has links)
This doctoral dissertation is divided into two parts: the first deals a rhythmic set theory, and the second contains the portfolio of compositions developed during this period of studies. This dissertation presents a system of rhythmic organization parallel to the musical set theory pitch class organization FORTE (1973), as well as an adaptation of the time-point-system (BABBITT, 1962). From the standpoint of the traditional set theory, and also from the diatonic set theory, this unified approach allows to estabilish a connecting tissue of basic aspects: from the harmony and chords symbols to the rhythmic organization. At one time, in a complete catalog, the families of pitch class sets and chord symbols are related to their respective rhythmic counterparts. The musical motivation for this research came from my interest in the swinging and groovy repetitive rhythms called timelines (TOUSSAINT, 2013), commonly used in popular music. These dancing timelines have properties similar to those of the diatonic sets, and for this reason, this dissertation presents some properties of the diatonic pitch class sets, drawing a parallel with their rhythmic counterparts. These relationships also appear in the portfolio of compositions, characterizing some procedures used. The portfolio of compositions, which includes a composition for symphony orchestra, is presented form the standpoint of a duality between transparency and opacity. This duality address the essential differences in the audibility of the results from various composition techniques. This study of Rhythmic Set Theory will serve as an analytical approach of my compositional output in popular music, with a systematic way to understant and to extrapolate some aspects already used in my practice as composer and improviser.

The present dissertation investigates the dynamic behaviour of composite floors (steel-concrete) in multi-storey buildings when subjected to the human rhythmic activities, considering human comfort aspects. The dynamic loads were obtained through experimental tests with individuals carrying out rhythmic and non-rhythmic activities such as stimulated and non-stimulated jumping and aerobics. The investigated structural model was based on several building composite floors. The structural systems are composed of a composite (steel/concrete) solution made of an I steel profile and a reinforced concrete slab. The proposed analysis methodology adopted the usual mesh refinement techniques present in the finite element method simulations implemented in the ANSYS program. A parametric analysis was developed, using three different building composite floors with two, three and four storeys. The parametric study considered correlations between analytical and numerical results found in the technical literature. The results, in terms of maximum accelerations (peak accelerations) were compared with the limits proposed by design recommendations. The results indicated that the limits suggested by design recommendations are not satisfied. Such fact shows that these rhythmic activities may generate peak accelerations that violates design criteria when the human comfort is considered. It was verified that these dynamic loads generate considerable perturbations on adjacent areas. The influence caused by dynamic actions in adjacent floors near to the place where the load was applied also can compromise the human comfort.

. / The cotemporary society suffers many negative effects caused by the emission of substances in the atmosphere. Illnesses, reduction of the physical aptitudes, thermal discomfort, climatic transformation of landscapes and changes that involve scales of the local level to the global one are only some examples of the atmospheric pollutants action. At São Paulo Metropolitan Region (RMSP), the most important exponent of South American metropolitan areas, the intense use of motor vehicles, traffic jam and long distances in the urban space induce air pollution episodes. In this research it is developed and presented a methodology, based on the climate rhythm paradigm, for the study of the air pollution caused vehicles in metropolitan areas, collating episodes of intense pollution and types of weather using rhythmic analysis technique. The methodology was applied to the RMSP with the Ibirapuera station data (CETESB) in the 2001, 2002, 2003 and 2004 winters, showing that the representative episodes of intense pollution for carbon monoxide (CO), particulate matter (MP10) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) had been characterized by stagnating anticyclones action that hindered the frontal invasions, with days of calmnesses that had not exhausted the produced pollution of the RMSP. The processes of tropicalization of the Atlantic Polar Air Mass (MPA), that had influenced the increase of the temperatures and the decrease of the humidity, had represented the days with high level of pollutants in the air. Already the episodes of intense pollution for ozone (O3) had been characterized mainly by the influence of Atlantic Tropical Air Mass (MTA) and Continental Tropical Air Mass (MTC) masses, with sufficiently sunny and hot days, winds that had great influence in the transport of ozone and its precursors from the industrial areas of ABCD region and Cubatão into the central area of the RMSP.

Conceição, Márcio Jardel da 21 February 2017 (has links)
In antiquity, there was concern about noxious microorganisms disseminated with the aid of fluid media such as water and air, which compromised the health of city dwellers in urban areas due to lack of adequate basic sanitation. Nowadays, in addition to continuing this type of situation that has lasted for centuries, there is still the issue of high temperatures caused by the lack of sustainable awareness regarding means that ameliorate the exposure of solar radiation, as well as the concentration of pollutants In the atmosphere of cities emitted by industries and vehicles. Anthropogenic interventions modify the natural environment by replacing the soil cover with waterproof artificial layers to give rise to the construction of cities altering the local atmosphere of any urban agglomerate, besides stimulating the appearance of phenomena such as islands of heat and thermal inversion. This scenario has been the stage for cardiovascular, infectious and respiratory diseases to be the protagonists, affecting society in general. In this context, the research aimed to analyze cardio-respiratory diseases in the urban space of Aracaju due to local climatic interferences from 2006 to 2015. The methodology adopted was based on the model of Rhythmic Analysis developed by Monteiro (1976) with the purpose to relate climatic factors and diseases. In order to reach the proposed objectives, INMET collected data on the climate and analyzed 23,000 patient records (pneumonia, asthma, cardiac arrhythmia, heart failure and myocardial infarction) at the University Hospital - HU-UFS. The results showed that the number of cases of cardiovascular diseases was concentrated in the hottest months of the year influenced by the urban climate, while the respiratory events were more expressive in the fall season due to cold fronts. In terms of spatialization of diseases, the neighborhoods of the north of the capital were the most affected by both pathologies. Thus, in the face of an increasing number of these diseases, improvements in basic sanitation, monitoring of air quality by public agencies, intensification of planting of green areas and afforestation, both on public roads and on lots, are Way to design the city by the actors involved in construction (architects, civil engineers and real estate entrepreneurs).
