Liten tuva stjälper ofta stort lass : Bakteriell kontamination över tid av operationsinstrument vid öppen neurokirurgi / A small tuft often overturns a big load : Bacterial contamination over time on surgical instruments used in open neurosurgeryEkman, Jakob, Bernroth, Benjamin January 2016 (has links)
Totalt tio CFU registrerades under samtliga observationer. / Background: Post-operative surgical site infections (SSI) cause suffering for the afflicted patient and is a great cost for the patient, the health care system and society. Intra-operative contamination of surgical instruments is one of the sources of these infections. The operating room nurse is responsible for preventing infections. Purpose: The purpose of this pilot-study was to measure the degree of bacterial contamination over time on surgical instruments used in open neurosurgery as well as to observe specific sources of contamination during this time. Method: The design was a quantitative nonexperimental observational study. The data collection took place during autumn 2015 and consisted of the sampling of specific instruments used by the surgeon during surgery after preset elapsed operating times. Bacterial culturing on these instruments was then carried out at a laboratory according to a preset routine and the degree of contamination was measured by observing the amount of colony forming units (CFU). The results are presented as changes in CFU. Results: Five operations were observed and ten bacterial culturings were conducted on ten instruments. A total of ten CFU was registered during all observations. No significant increase in the number of CFU could be observed from one to two hours of elapsed surgery (P=0,156). The amount of door openings increased from 3,4 to 9,0 and the number of personnel in the operating room increased from 5,4 to 5,8. Conclusion: Despite the small number of observations included in this study the results indicate good aseptics and minimal bacterial contamination on the surgical instruments during the first two hours of surgery. Further research with longer observations, more observations and observations on other forms of surgery is needed.

Mantras for miraclesReinholtz, Sara January 2013 (has links)
The thesis paper Design takes place in our lives, naturally and sometimes invisibly, but how can we become alert to its impact on us? How can we as designers elaborate on our role in creating tools for people’s lives? A handmade metal wire toy I found in my parents’ house made me discover the world of mandalas; a Buddhistic symbol and a tool for spiritual enlightenment. Mandalas speak of the relation between us and the world and balance between body and mind. In my Master’s project, the act of playing is explored as a tool for altering perspectives on our physical environment. Inspired by the mandala, an alternative approach to functional form is visualized, connecting our bodies and minds in closer relation to a playful and imaginative state of being. By investigating our physical environment and encouraging interaction, new mantras for our everyday lives may be created. The design process Using the metal wire mandala as my starting point, I have explored spatial forms with possibilities in transformation. Different combinations of the same parts; half circles of bent metal wire which connected can move and therefore change the other shape of the construction, creates different kinds of space with more or less clear practical application. The ambition of this project has been to investigate the metal construction as foundation and frame for textile in and as architecture; building a whole space, as visual room dividers indoor or outdoor and as sun screen. The design is based on transformation and reuse of the same parts to build new forms. The textiles have been designed and produced with the metal construction as frame. The textiles are knitted with nylon thread, hand dyed and mounted onto the construction. The technique of partial knitting makes it possible to create the round shapes with an even elasticity in all directions, and an open centre for the next piece overlapping. When knitting, no waste material I generated since nothing is cut away after production. Using punch cards, patterns and structure is added to the surface. The need to create smaller spaces within a larger space is present in many places; indoors as well as out doors. The public environment in which we live, controls and shapes our lives. By creating more intimate sites, with the possibility for visual and mental rest, we can come closer one another and hold other types of conversations. This will create new patterns of behaviour; new mantras for everyday life. During the Konstfack Degree Exhibition 2013, I displayed one of the possible forms in full scale with textiles, along side a smaller size model of the same shape and one other possible shape with closer resemblance to the original wire toy. On site in the exhibition, visitors could meet and try the space in a real setting.

The novice nurse educator's lecture room instructional management competenceDürrheim, Maria, 1949- 06 1900 (has links)
The lecture room instructional management competence of novice nurse educators (NNEs) in the
Republic of South Africa (RSA) was investigated. No comprehensive set of generic roles,
outcomes and competences for instructional management of nurse educators could be traced in
the literature, therefore an analytical study was undertaken. Adhering to the principles for
outcomes-based education, three models were established:
Q a model for the professional development of nurse educators
Q an Education, Training and Development nurse practitioner model, consisting of roles
and outcomes for lecture room instructional management
Q a model for lecture room instructional management that served as evaluation criteria
used in the instrument during the quantitative survey
These models were presented to, and evaluated by nurse educators of five universities.
The influence of mentorship, reality shock, and professional development on the NNEs' lecture
room competence was investigated. The target group consisted of NNEs, their mentors and
students in nursing schools in the RSA. A number of respondents were also interviewed and
observed. The analysed data indicated that NNEs were not competent when they started teaching,
and needed support and supervision from mentors. Findings also indicated the positive influence
of mentorship and professional development on competence acquisition. NNEs experienced
reality shock requiring support to acquire competence. These aspects justify further research.
The recommendations based on this study include that nursing schools use specific evaluation
criteria for le<,1ure room competence and for in-service training of NNEs and mentors. Nursing
schools should take a more active role in mentoring programmes. / Health Studies / D. Litt. et Phil. (Advanced Nursing Sciences)
