Disseminated sporotrichosis in an immunocompetent patient

Hassan, Kareem, Turker, Tolga, Zangeneh, Tirdad 31 May 2016 (has links)
Sporothrix schenckii, the causative agent of sporotrichosis, is a relatively rare infection. Local infection usually occurs through direct inoculation of the organism through the skin; disseminated disease is rarely seen. This article describes a case of disseminated sporotrichosis in a middle-aged man without the commonly seen risk factors for dissemination.

Roses of Love, Violets of Humility and Lilies of Suffering: A Phenomenological Hermeneutic Study of Floral Experiences in the Diary of St. Faustina Kowalska (1905-1938)

Kandler, Renate January 2013 (has links)
The presence of flowers is felt in Catholic architecture, literature, artwork, personal histories and devotional practices. This, however, has not always been the case. The Catholic Church has had a long and tumultuous relationship with flowers, the focus of which has been the subject of considerable scholarship (e.g. Fisher (2011, 2007), Ward (1999), Winston-Allen (1997), Goody (1993), Coats (1970)). What has not been much considered is a phenomenological treatment of Catholic floral experience, and how such experiences have shaped individual and shared understandings of the Catholic faith. This thesis seeks to redress this omission through an exploration of the life of the Polish Catholic mystic, St. Faustina Kowalska (1905-1938), whose mystical experiences with the divine were explicitly mediated and narrated through flowers. Through Faustina’s diary, Divine Mercy in my Soul, we gain access to powerful, and unequivocally Catholic, experiences with flowers which comprise the very centre of her religious convictions. This thesis queries the ways in which flowers have dynamically shaped, and have been shaped by, St. Faustina's relationship with God and Catholic holy figures. To address this question I use the semiotic, phenomenological and hermeneutic approach of Max van Manen. Van Manen uses four elements of lived experience he calls lifeworld existentials, these are: lived space, lived time, lived body and lived relationality. These four categories are applied to St. Faustina’s life as she engages with God spatially, temporally, corporeally and relationally; each reveals the centrality of flowers in her religious experiences. While this thesis focuses on the religio-floral experiences of a particular mystic-saint, its significance lies also in the broader Catholic narrative of which it is a part. Writing about flowers was a transformative medium in Faustina's life and has been historically significant in the lives of many other Catholic saints and mystics who recorded similar experiences. This thesis, in describing the details of St. Faustina’s floral-saturated experiences from her diary, reveals a particularized instance of a paradigmatic Catholic phenomenon whereby flowers provide access to the sacred.

Appropriating the Restoration: Fictional Place and Time in Works by Daniel Defoe, Sir Walter Scott and Rose Tremain

Slagle, Judith Bailey 19 March 2015 (has links)
While authors have appropriated literary works for centuries, they have also appropriated historical settings and places well outside their own realities, creating new works in historical settings that reflect a new cultural purpose. The Restoration and eighteenth century are frequent subjects of popular formula-fiction romances due to the distinctive, easily replicated atmospheres; but the period has also inspired serious, traditional historical fiction and fictionalized biography as well as productions of novels from the period. This panel focuses on the long eighteenth century and the period’s intrigue for filmmakers, TV producers and audiences in a modern-day culture

Im Schatten der Rose: Ernst Reden, Schöngeist und Lyriker - ein kurzes jungenschaftliches Leben

Kuhn, Jörg Hannes 16 March 2020 (has links)

Black British Bookshops : Political, Cultural, Social and Imaginative Spaces, 1966–1995

Monteiro, Leah January 2022 (has links)
In recent years, attention on Black British history has increased in light of the 2020 resurgence of the Black Lives Matter movement that encouraged Britons to rethink their participation in suppressing racialised communities. Much of this literature fills the gaps that have long existed in the British historical canon that overlook Black Briton’s and their existence in Britain entirely. This thesis seeks to contribute to this work through analysing the remarkable role of Black British bookshops and how they functioned as political, cultural, social, and imaginative spaces between the inauguration of the first Black bookshop in 1966 and the last International Book Fair of Radical, Black and Third World Books in 1995. Jürgen Habermas’s theory of public space is used and reframed to discuss the necessity of public space for marginalised communities in democratic societies. This is seen through the multifunctional aspects of bookselling space and the testimonies of bookshop owners and users who attest to the bookshop’s significance. Whilst the political importance of the Black British bookshop space has previously been emphasised, this thesis shows that their cultural, social and imaginative functions were also important aspects that drastically impacted the lives of Black Britons in the post-war era.

Skrämseltaktik eller romantisering? En innehållsanalys av Systembolagets två antilangningsfilmer ”Systrar” och ”Bröder”

Stahlenius, Astrid January 2019 (has links)
In 2015 and 2016 the Swedish Systembolaget published the two films “Sisters” and “Brothers”as a campaign towards discouraging older siblings purchasing alcohol to underaged siblings. Thisstudy investigates the development the possibilities for these two movies to further reach theirtargeted audience. The purpose is to investigate how working from an User Experience (UX)perspective could effect and further increase the circulation of the message about not buyingalcohol to a minor. The theoretical approach in this study is based on Gillian Roses (2016) model“Four Cites of a critical visual methodology” and accounts for tools and theories about interactiveattributes and UX. The analysis consists of a compositional interpretation of the two movies andof material collected from three separate focus group discussions that has been conducted. The study highlights three percieved themes that has been discovered about alcohol usage; thereis a larger threat for young girls and it is often young girls who get too drunk, alcohol that hasbeen bought by an older sibling usually acts more as a complement to the bootleg alcohol ratherthan limiting and controlling the amount, and that it is more common and easier to buy alcoholfor a minor sibling if you are closer in age. The result from the visual analysis have beencombined with these three themes to create three visualisations and prototypes. The studyconcludes that there are development possibilities in the two movies ”Sisters” and ”Brothers”especially in their use of platforms, and the study proposes a production of a third movie with twodifferent genders and a smaller age gap, which could increase the proliferation potentials.

The use of hair as a manifestation of cultural and gender identity in the works of Tracey Rose

Meyerov, Lee-At 08 April 2008 (has links)
ABSTRACT This research report investigates the manifestation of hair as a symbol of cultural and gender identity as is seen in selected works of South African artist Tracey Rose, whose usage of her own culturally specific hair and body serves as metaphor through which she critically engages with issues surrounding the gendered and racialized body. The report will explore the ways in which Rose both in her video piece Ongetiteld (1996) and her performance video installation Span II (1997) challenges and subsequently deconstructs the rigidly defined monoliths of ‘Woman’, ‘femininity’, and the racially constructed category of ‘Coloured’, assigned and imposed on her during the Apartheid era. Rose’s work, highlighting the extent to which the conceptualization of gender and racial identity are bound and read off the body’s corporeality, relates to my own artistic practice, whereby I examine the metaphorical functioning of skin, as a corporeal ‘text’ and parchment, facilitating the inscription of my own cultural, religious and linguistic Otherness.
