Rose Macaulay: Satirist

Carey, Suzanne F. 01 January 1964 (has links)
Dame Rose Macaulay possessed two qualities, a comic spirit and an intellectual pessimism, which made her one of England's finest modern satirists. Her satire has limitations. First, because of rapid and rather prolific productivity, some of the satire is repetitious. Second, the reader who enjoys satire is already aware of many of the flaws and incongruities of society. He has probably ridiculed them himself, so he may not find the satire as fresh and original as the author hoped it would be. Much of Miss Macaulay's satire is delightful and keen but occasionally she stoops to the trivial. In spite of these shortcomings and the fact that sometimes the humor seems so broad as to be almost forced, the presence of the comic spirit and the intellectual pessimism--her insight into both the comedy and the tragedy of life--gives much of her satire great appeal and universality.

Performance variations of rose cultivars due to climate location

Evans, Ormond Keister January 1968 (has links)
Roses are said to vary in performance in different sections of the country. To determine the degree (if any) of variance, a survey was conducted obtaining ratings of a selected grouping of roses grown in all sections of the United States. This survey was conducted among members of the American Rose Society and other selected gardeners, who evaluated their roses in terms of performance in their own gardens. More than 5,000 rosarians participated, each reporting on an average of 25 roses. Some 450 roses introduced into commerce from 1962 through 1967 were included in the study. For the purpose of the study the United States was divided into three major geographic regions. This report furnished a numerical rating based on a 10 point scale of all the newer roses now being grown in each region. The study listed with comments the higher rated roses in each horticultural class. Tables were used to present the cultivars from each region according to rank. The study showed that the performance of most roses varies from one area to another. It was revealed, however, that basically the same roses proved to be the highest rated, and showed the best results in each of the three regions under study. The report is especially valuable to amateur gardeners who wish to determine the value of specific cultivars for their own locale. / M.S.

When the News is the News: A Textual Analysis of NBC and CBS networks' Response to Sexual Harassment Allegations in the Wake of the #MeToo Movement

Cline, Morgan Paige 30 June 2020 (has links)
As the #MeToo movement swept the nation from Hollywood to Washington, within less than a week's time in November of 2017, longstanding news anchors, Matt Lauer and Charlie Rose were fired from their respective news networks because of sexual harassment allegations. As a result, each network had to grapple with repairing a destroyed image while simultaneously fulfilling the duty to report on news objectively. This qualitative analysis examined NBC and CBS's response to the allegations of sexual harassment against each anchor, allegations of withholding information and allegations of ignoring complaints through the lens of image repair theory in order to identify if any of the strategies were present in the networks' response. Applications of image repair discourse to news media organizations is a relatively novel examination and it highlights the complex duality of an organization's right to uphold its image but obligation to present the news objectively, even when it has become the news. / Master of Arts / As the #MeToo movement swept the nation from Hollywood to Washington, within less than a week's time in November of 2017, longstanding news anchors, Matt Lauer and Charlie Rose were fired from their respective news networks because of sexual harassment allegations. As a result, each network had to grapple with repairing a destroyed image while simultaneously running business as usual. This study examined NBC and CBS's response to the allegations of sexual harassment against each anchor, the allegations of withholding information and allegations of ignoring complaints made by employees over the past two decades, all the while attempting to fulfill the duty of objectively reporting the news. This study examined each networks' response using a crisis communication theory and offers an extension to the theory that can be utilized by news network organizations and the like.

Bergeron, Marie-Andrée 16 April 2018 (has links)

Roccia, Aymeric 22 February 2013 (has links)
Very few enzymes responsible for the biosynthesis of scent compounds in the genus Rosa are known so far. This PhD thesis aims to identify some of these proteins with DNA microarray technology, gene expression analysis by real-time quantitative PCR (qPCR) and scent analysis by gas chromatography (GC). An array comparing cDNA from a scented rose to those of a non-scented one, showed a correlation between expression of a yet-unknown gene, encoding a Nudix hydrolase, highly expressed in the scented rose, and the presence of monoterpenes in the scent of many rose cultivars. Characterization of a rose cultivar, in which expression of this gene has been decreased by RNA interference, confirmed its role in monoterpene synthesis. The phenylacetaldehyde synthase (PAAS) is another enzyme implicated in scent biosynthesis. Three alleles of this protein had been previously described. qPCR and GC experiments in a hybrid population showed that the a1 allele is the only one able to induce 2-phenylethanol biosynthesis. The respective activities of the different isoforms were tested in vitro in yeast, and in planta in tobacco leaves and rose calli: these experiments showed that the three isoforms have comparable activities. The lack of 2-phenylethanol production in plants having a2 and a3 isoforms is thus due to the very low expression of their respective alleles, probably inducing very low isoform concentration in cells

The effect of potassium and water quality on the yield and oil quality of Rose Geranium (Pelargonium graveolens L.)

Khetsha, Zenzile Peter January 2013 (has links)
Thesis (M. Tech. (Agriculture)) -- Central University of Technology, Free state, 2014 / The main objective of the study was to determine the effect of different potassium concentrations and water quality (salt) compared with the current scientifically accepted potassium threshold level and standardised water quality on the yield, oil composition and leaf morphology of rose geranium (Pelargonium graveolens L.) when grown in different potting-bag sizes and root media under temperature controlled condition. To achieve this objective, two trials were conducted. The first experiment evaluated potassium concentrations at 1.3, 3.3, 5.3 and 7.3 mmol L-1 and potting-bag size of 5 and 10 L. Treatments were arranged in a randomised complete block design assigned in a split plot layout. The main plots consisted of potassium concentration and the pottingbag sizes were allocated to sub-plots. Plant height, potassium content, linalool, geraniol, geranyl formate and the citronellol to geraniol ratio (C:G) were affected by potassium. Plant height, number of branches, the branch to height ratio (B:H), foliar fresh mass (FFM) and oil yield were significantly increased when 5 L potting bags were used. Plant foliar mass was significantly increased by the interaction between 5.3 mmol K L-1 and 5 L potting bags. In the second experiment salt levels applied at 1.6, 2.4, 3.2 and 4.0 mS cm-1 and root media (sand and sawdust) were evaluated. A split plot experimental layout was also used in this trial, with the salt levels allocated to the main plots. The sub-plots were allocated to the root medium. High salt level of 4.0 mS cm-1 reduced the number of leaves, plant height, number of branches, B:H ratio, leaf area, chlorophyll content and foliar fresh mass significantly. The number of leaves, leaf area and FFM were significantly increased where sawdust was used. Time of the day significantly affected stomatal conductance, and the opening of most stomata occurred at 10:00. Geranyl formate and the C:G ratio were significantly affected by salt at 4.0 mS cm-1. Salt induced the development of capitates trichomes. The abaxial leaf surface had a higher number of trichomes than the adaxial leaf surface. A strong polynomial (r2=0.97) relationship was found between capitates trichomes and salt levels. High densities of capitates trichomes were found at high salt level of 4.0 mS cm-1. Although the development of asciiform trichomes was induced, it was at an insignificant level. Trichome densities are therefore not affected by salt. It was therefore concluded that the application of 5.3 mmol K L-1 concentration and the use of 5 L potting bags improves the yield and oil quality of rose geranium. It was evident from this study that rose geranium might Salt induced have some degree of tolerance to salt. It was therefore concluded that rose geranium is a moderately salt-sensitive crop.

Trauma and the ethical in international relations

Schick, Katherine Anne January 2008 (has links)
The suffering that initially prompts ethical reflection is frequently forgotten in the generalised rational response of much contemporary International Relations theory. This thesis draws on Theodor W. Adorno and Gillian Rose to propose an alternative approach to suffering in world politics. Adorno argues suffering and trauma play a key role in the task of enlightening Enlightenment. They emphasise the concrete particularity of human existence in a way that is radically challenging to Enlightenment thought. Understanding suffering helps to drive a negative dialectics that preserves the non-identical (that which cannot be understood, manipulated or controlled by reason), holding it up against the instrumentalism and abstraction that have prevented Enlightenment thought from fulfilling its promise. Part One reviews contemporary approaches to international ethics in a way that draws out their affinity with the Enlightenment thought Adorno criticises. Despite their variety, liberal and Habermasian approaches to international ethics tend to be rational and problem-solving, to assume moral progress, to underestimate the importance of history and culture, and to neglect inner lives. They approach ethics in a way that pays too little attention to the social, historical, and cultural antecedents of suffering and therefore promotes solutions that, whilst in some ways inspiring, are too disconnected from the suffering they seek to address to be effective in practice. Part Two deepens the critique of modern ethics through an exposition of Adorno's work. It then draws on Adorno's conception of promise, Rose's writing on mourning and political risk, and a broader literature on ways of working through trauma to propose an alternative way of being in the world with ethical and political implications. I advocate a neo-Hegelian work of mourning, which deepens understanding of the complexities of violence and informs a difficult, tentative, anxiety-ridden taking of political risk in pursuit of a good enough justice.

Optimisation de la programmation d’un cristal dopé aux ions de terres rares, opérant comme processeur analogique d’analyse spectrale RF, ou de stockage d’information quantique / Optimized programming of a rare-earth ion doped crystal, operating as a RF signal spectral analyzer, or as a quantum information storage processor

Bonarota, Matthieu 21 September 2012 (has links)
The development of a quantum memory for light involves the most fundamental aspects of the light-matter interaction. To store the quantum information carried by light, the material has to be able to stay in a state of quantum superposition. The storage time is limited by the lifetime of this state, characterized by the coherence time. The first experiments involved the well-known cold atomic vapors. More recently, Rare Earth Ions doped Crystals (REIC) have drawn attention because of their remarkably long coherence time, combined with a large interaction bandwidth. Specific protocols have been proposed to take the most out of these properties. We have opted for a promising spin-off of the well-known photon echo, named the Atomic Frequency Comb (AFC, proposed in 2008), based on the transmission of the incoming field through a spectrally periodic absorption profile. The first chapters of this manuscript present this protocol and our works aimed at improving its efficiency (the probability for capturing and retrieving the incoming information), increasing its bandwidth and its multiplexing capacity and measuring its noise. The following chapters present a new protocol, proposed in our group during this thesis, and called Revival Of Silenced Echo (ROSE). This protocol, similar to the photon echo, have been demonstrated and characterized experimentally. It seems really promising in terms of efficiency, bandwidth and noise.

Gren, Stéphanie January 2006 (has links)
