Wave: A Dance Composition and Performance

Labelle, Morgan 01 May 2019 (has links)
Wave: A Dance Composition and Performance is a choreographic work and performance that tells a personal narrative in comparison to a wave. I performed the modern/lyrical dance with two other dancers, Rachel Crabtree and Kate Trabalka, on the evening of November 16th, 2018 in room 205 of the ETSU Campus Center building. My previous technical dance training, and training as a dance minor at East Tennessee State University from 2015-2018 prepared me to proudly present a piece that was entirely choreographed by me. The following research of modern and lyrical dance shaped my choreography, as well as my musical choices that I carefully selected and edited. Using weight sharing and partner work, and pulling inspiration and direction from the Laban Movement Analysis, I thoughtfully created a ten-minute-long production. Through research and contemplation of my life, I dove head first into pouring my heart and soul into the choreography, and this thesis documents all of the aspects that came together to create Wave.

Nationalism Articulated by Rudolf Kjellén : A Case Study Concerning Nationalism in Sweden during 1905-1906

Gahnström, Emil January 2020 (has links)
This project is conducted as a descriptive case-study with the aim to explore the political context that formed and articulated the nationalist thoughts of the Swedish scholar, publicist, and parliamentarian Rudolf Kjellén. Specifically, it concerns his nationalist thoughts as they are articulated in his nationalist manifesto Nationell Samling: Politiska och Etiska Fragment(National Congregation: Political and Ethical Fragments (1906)), and how they were articulated during his two initial years in the Swedish Riksdag: 1905-1906. Hence does the work conducted here constitute a study into the history of ideas. Based on Quentin Skinner's theory regarding the role of context when inquiries into history are conducted, the chief focus of this inquiry has its attention on the political context. In as much as this study reveals, the political context that formed Kjellén's nationalism was the major influence of political liberalism at the time with which this inquiry is concerned, and especially so with regards to how it influenced the results of the negotiations in the aftermath of the dissolution of the Swedish-Norwegian Union in 1905, and the discussions on universal suffrage in Sweden at the time. Additionally, this inquiry provides support for a variety of claims and ideas from previous research, both on nationalism and on Kjellén, while simultaneously delivering a more nuanced understanding of the relatively unexplored political context that articulated the specifics of Kjellén's nationalism. Accordingly, it is my aim to contribute to the scholarships on nationalism, and on Kjellén, with a thorough and structured understanding of the political context that formed and articulated its idiosyncrasies.

O percurso do pensamento de Rudolf Steiner e seu possível lugar no espaço psicológico / The path of Rudolf Steiner´s thought and its possible place in the field of psychology

Franciulli, Paula 12 August 2015 (has links)
We follow thus, its self-making process, putting ourselves before a psychology which contains a variety of theories either connected or disconnected to it regarding to scientific criteria This psychological dimension holds itself in a dynamic of ruptures which Figueiredo (2012) calls as dispersion field or sometimes even into the idea of the unifying psychology. Knowing that theoretical and methodological plurality I see the necessity for a deeper thinking regarding the psychologist´s choice or empathy towards a certain theory or stream. I believe that such choices are intrinsically connected to his or her cognitive-emotional experiences through life. The proposal of this work was to analyze the fundamental thoughts of Rudolf Steiner (1861-1925), who was the founder of anthroposophy philosophy which deals with some core themes of psychology. A dialogue was sought between some historical-cultural aspects which involved his own path of knowledge construction and the psychology-making. The proposal of this work was to make an attempt to place Steiner´s thoughts into the so called psychology space according to Figueiredo (2007). Steiner´s self- reported episodes were analyzed from his autobiography which I referred here as cognitive-emotional experiences and how those aspects may have shaped his way of thinking. One of those aspects is his very close dialogue with J. W. Goethe´s ideas which also deserved prominence in this research. Nowadays there is a new light upon Goethe´s thinking, mainly in regards to his conception of intuition, so, that is why psychology is also interested and concerned with how intuition can influence human development. Perhaps this will be the contemporaneity of this paper. It was required approximation and distancing movements from the researcher in special to her previous knowledge about Steiner, and in doing so, it has given her a better comprehension about both: psychology construction and Steiner path. As a result, there was a better understanding on how the process of making choice takes place when a psychologist decides on one or the other stream to conduct his professional approach, noticing that there are historical-cultural aspects which lead the psychologists to choose, guiding them either to counseling practice or in the research field

Nerve languages : the critical response to the physiological psychology of Wilhelm Wundt by Dada and Surrealism

Mowris, Peter Michael 09 February 2011 (has links)
Scholarship on Dada and Surrealism has established that psychology was a major intellectual source for artists in both groups. However, a burgeoning amount of recent work in both the history of art and of science indicates that types of psychology other than psychoanalysis permeated the historical context of the avant-garde. In the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, physiological psychology, for example, was the dominant science of the body and mind, which grounded psychic phenomena in structures of conduction in the nervous system. Modern artists saw within this discourse a fascinating and new theory of experience. In my selective history of the avant-garde’s reception and response to physiological psychology, I will argue that artists worked within and partially according to the basic tenets of this discourse, but that they reshaped its superstructural projections away from formations and taxonomies of normalcy in consciousness and action. / text

Caspar Lehmann: umělec na dvoře Rudolfa II. / Caspar Lehmann: an artist at the court of Rudolf II.

Minaříková, Adéla January 2017 (has links)
Caspar Lehmann is one of the most significant personalities of applied arts in central Europe at the end othe 16th and the beginning of 17th century. As an engraver of glass and precious stones he worked at the court of emperor Rudolf II. in Prague, but also at the court of the elector Christian II in Dresden. Considerable interest in his work was caused mainly by the claim of Joachim von Sandrart from 1675 stating that Caspar Lehmann was granted a privilege for glass engraving. Discovery of a signed beaker in late 19th century further sparked the existing interest in his production. Based on the similarities with the beaker, several other works were subsequently attributed to Lehmann, despite significant differences in quality and style of engraving. The present work summarizes Lehmanns life based on a thorough study of previous literature and archive materials. Main part of the work includes detailed analyses of 26 artifacts which were previously attributed to Lehmann. Based on their comparison it attempts to define a characteristic technique Lehmann used for carving, and subsequently to critically assess his authorship. The thorough comparisons of the existing objects suggest that three portrait pannels (Moritz von Oranien, Johann Sigismund von Brandenburg, and Johann Friedrich von Württemberg)...
