Russell's Philosophical Approach to Logical Analysis

Galaugher, Jolen B. 04 1900 (has links)

In what is supposed to have been a radical break with neo-Hegelian idealism, Bertrand Russell, alongside G.E Moore, advocated the analysis of propositions by their decomposition into constituent concepts and relations. Russell regarded this as a breakthrough for the analysis of the propositions of mathematics. However, it would seem that the decompositional-analytic approach is singularly unhelpful as a technique for the clarification of the concepts of mathematics. The aim of this thesis will be to clarify Russell’s early conception of the analysis of mathematical propositions and concepts in the light of the philosophical doctrines to which his conception of analysis answered, and the demands imposed by existing mathematics on Russell’s logicist program. Chapter 1 is concerned with the conception of analysis which emerged, rather gradually, out of Russell’s break with idealism and with the philosophical commitments thereby entrenched. Chapter 2 is concerned with Russell’s considered treatment of the significance of relations for analysis and the overturning of his “doctrine of internal relations” in his work on Leibniz. Chapter 3 is concerned with Russell’s discovery of Peano and the manner in which it informed the conception of analysis underlying Russell’s articulation of logicism for arithmetic and geometry in PoM. Chapter 4 is concerned with the philosophical and logical differences between Russell’s and Frege’s approaches to logical analysis in the logicist definition of number. Chapter 5 is concerned with connecting Russell’s attempt to secure a theory of denoting, crucial to mathematical definition, to his decompositional conception of the analysis of propositions.
/ Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

Russell, Roxburghe 10 February 2022 (has links)
In response to the sense of disconnection with the environment that I feel, my artistic practice explores ways to reconnect. Attentive to my surroundings, the location in which I find my self directly influences my work and chosen themes. My work methods, such as repeating the same gesture and rhythmic movements, require endurance and incorporate the notion of duration and a sense of time. I attempt to create a tension between the delicacy of my gestures and the destruction of nature which I notice on a daily basis. I explore presenting my work as rolls to symbolise the passage the time. Through the points of contact I have with my environment, I seek to create a sense of continuity. Accompanying my project, this thesis provides a guide to understanding the exhibition Les arbres sont fatigués (The Trees are Tired).

An Analysis of President Trump's Afghanistan Foreign Policy: Through the Theoretical Framework of Walter Russell Mead's Four Paradigms

Santoro, Patrick Thomas 26 May 2020 (has links)
The purpose of this thesis was to analyze President Trump's Afghanistan foreign policy and to determine if it fits the mold of one of the four historical foreign policy paradigms as described by Walter Russell Mead in his book, Special Providence: American Foreign Policy and How It Changed the World. Mead describes four U.S. foreign policy schools of thought, in which he titles after influential statesmen who embody the specific school's core principles. These paradigms include the Hamiltonians, who believe in a strong relationship between big business and government for foreign policy success. The Wilsonians, who encourage the spread of democratic principles abroad. The Jeffersonians, who favor the protection of domestic liberal democracy over other foreign policy endeavors. Lastly, the Jacksonians, who prioritize the physical and economic security of American citizens above all else. The primary research question in this thesis states, which of the four traditions of U.S. foreign policy identified by Walter Russell Mead helps explain President Trump's Afghanistan foreign policy? President Trump's rhetoric and specific foreign policy actions were analyzed. His rhetoric was examined through his August 2017 Afghanistan Strategy speech and his specific foreign policy actions were measured through various air operation metrics, U.S. aid to Afghanistan, and U.S. troop deployment trends. Overall, this thesis gave support to my hypothesis that President Trump's Afghanistan foreign policy contains various Hamiltonian and Wilsonian principles, but it has proven to be principally Jacksonian. / Master of Arts / The objective of this thesis was to further understand President Trump's Afghanistan foreign policy through the theoretical framework of Walter Russel Mead's four historical foreign policy paradigms. Mead's four historical paradigms are useful tools to examine and understand U.S. foreign policy. Mead provides in-depth historical context, goes into great detail on core principles, and also provides a surfeit of advantages and disadvantages for each school of thought. His breakdown of U.S. foreign policy into complementary yet combative paradigms is one of the most complete explanations of U.S. foreign policy to date. Adaptabilidade e estabilidade de progênies de soja tipo hortaliça nos estádios R6 e R8 em gerações avançadas de endogamia / Adaptability and stability of vegetable soybean (edamame) progenies in R6 and R8 stages and advanced generations of inbreeding

Nelson Enrique Casas Leal 03 March 2015 (has links)
Soybean is one of the most complete food known by the human being. The vegetable soybean or \"edamame\" belongs to the same species of the soybean cultivated as commodity, Glycine max (L.) Merrill. Edamame is a name with Japanese origin used for maintenance and reduction of the risks of several chronic diseases. The main objectives of this study were: a) to estimate useful genetic parameters to the breeding program of soybean vegetable, specially the genotype x environment interaction; b) to evaluate adaptability and stability of the genotypes and the representativeness of the environments; c) to characterize crosses and their progenies aiming the extraction of superior inbred lines. The genotypes corresponded to 23 crosses and their 42 progenies in advanced generations of inbreeding, that is from F6:10 to F6:13 generation, besides three common checks (BRS 257, BRS 267, and IAC 100). They were evaluated in two developmental stages, immature R6 and mature R8 soybean, during two (2011/12 and 2012/13) and four (2009/10 to 2012/13) growing seasons, respectively. The four crop years and three locations (Anhumas, Areão and ESALQ) were combined in nine environments. In each environment, there were carried out two experiments involving two fungicide managements; in the first experiment, there were made successive fungicide applications for controlling Asian soybean rust (FAS) and late season leaf diseases (DFC), whereas in the second experiment there were made fungicide applications for controlling only DFC. Each experiment was designed in a randomized complete-block design with three replications. Each repetition was divided into two experimental sets with common checks, forming an augmented design (Federer). The experimental plot was a row with 5 m x 0.50 m. The \"crop years\", \"locations\" and \"fungicides\" contributed significantly to the genotypes x environments interactions in both R6 and R8 stages. For pod yield (PV) in the R6 stage, the Eberhart and Russell method highlighted four crossings (19-005: USP 98-06005 x J-75, 19- 006: USP 98-06005 x Hakucho, 19-045: USP 98-06031 x Hakucho and 19 -111: USP 98- 06029 OCEPAR-4), generating 15 progenies (especially the numbers 19-045-03-01 and 19- 111-02-06) with the highest potential to be used as parents and or as new cultivars. The biggest highlight was the progeny 19-111-01-09, with very favorable performance for R6 traits, high seed yield (PG) and tolerance to rust in R8. The AMMI analysis revealed that almost all genotypes were stable and with PV around 150 g/2plants. For the R8 stage, the location effect determined that Areão was the best location for PG and one hundred seed weight (PCS). For the R6 stage, the year effect indicated that the crop year 2012/13 was the most favorable for the progeny performance for all traits. There were estimated highly significant correlation between PCS in R8 and one hundred pod weight in R6 (0.808 **), as well as between PCS and pod width in R6 stage (0.725**).

Le réalisme social américain à l'ère postmoderne : (Russell Banks, Raymond Carver, Richard Ford) / American social realism in the postmodern era

Paquereau, Marine 23 October 2015 (has links)
His study focuses on the works of Russell Banks, Raymond Carver and Richard Ford. They started writing during the 1960s and 1970s, at a time when the self-reflexivity and metafictional play of postmodernist writers were drawing a lot of critical attention in academic circles. However, they consider themselves to be realist writers. In “A Few Words about Minimalism,” John Barth suggested that the return to realist fiction in the mid-1970s could be both a reaction against so-called “postmodernist” fiction and a symptom of the social and economic unease of the period. Indeed, Cathedral, Continental Drift and The Sportswriter describe in accurate detail the everyday lives of ordinary American men and women during Reagan’s presidency. This study demonstrates that these authors are part of the American realist tradition, but that their strand of social realism also takes into account the postmodern context in which they write, by dealing with problems of representation that are typical of the period. Their works both use and challenge the literary conventions associated with the realist tradition, by underlining the artificiality of mimetic illusion at a time when reality itself is seen as a linguistic construct.

Modeling flood-induced processes causing Russell lupin mortality in the braided Ahuriri River, New Zealand

Javernick, Luke Anthony January 2013 (has links)
The braided rivers and floodplains in the Upper Waitaki Basin (UWB) of the South Island of New Zealand are critical habitats for endangered and threatened fauna such as the black stilt. However, this habitat has degraded due to introduced predators, hydropower operations, and invasive weeds including Russell lupins. While conservation efforts have been made to restore these habitats, flood events may provide a natural mechanism for removal of invasive vegetation and re-creation of natural floodplain habitats. However, little is understood about the hydraulic effects of floods on vegetation and potential mortality in these dynamic systems. Therefore, this thesis analyzed the flood-induced processes that cause lupin mortality in a reach of the Ahuriri River in the UWB, and simulated various sized flood events to assess how and where these processes occurred. To determine the processes that cause lupin mortality, post-flood observations were utilized to develop the hypothesis that flood-induced drag, erosion, sediment deposition, inundation, and trauma were responsible. Field and laboratory experiments were conducted to evaluate and quantify these individual processes, and results showed that drag, erosion, sediment deposition and inundation could cause lupin mortality. Utilizing these mortality processes, mortality thresholds of velocity, water depth, inundation duration, and morphologic changes were estimated through data analysis and evaluation of various empirical relationships. Delft3D was the numerical model used to simulate 2-dimensional flood hydraulics in the study-reach and was calibrated in three stages for hydraulics, vegetation, and morphology. Hydraulic calibration was achieved using the study-reach topography captured by Structure-from-Motion (SfM) and various hydraulic data (depth, velocity, and water extent from aerial photographs). Vegetation inclusion in Delft3D was possible utilizing a function called ‘trachytopes’, which represented vegetation roughness and flow resistance and was calibrated utilizing data from a lupin-altered flow conveyance experiment. Morphologic calibration was achieved by simulating an observed near-mean annual flood event (209 m3 s-1) and adjusting the model parameters until the simulated morphologic changes best represented the observed morphologic changes captured by pre- and post-flood SfM digital elevation models. Calibration results showed that hydraulics were well represented, vegetation inclusion often improved the simulated water inundation extent accuracy at high flows, but that local erosion and sediment deposition were difficult to replicate. Simulation of morphological change was expected to be limited due to simplistic bank erosion prediction methods. Nevertheless, the model was considered adequate since simulated total bank erosion was comparable to that observed and realistic river characteristics (riffles, pools, and channel width) were produced. Flood events ranging from the 2- to 500-year flood were simulated with the calibrated model, and lupin mortality was estimated using simulation results with the lupin mortality thresholds. Results showed that various degrees of lupin mortality occurred for the different flood events, but that the dominant mortality processes fluctuated between erosion, drag, and inundation. Sediment deposition-induced mortality was minimal, but was likely under-represented in the modeling due to poor model sediment deposition replication and possibly over-restrictive deposition mortality thresholds. The research presented in this thesis provided greater understanding of how natural flood events restore and preserve the floodplain habitats of the UWB and can be used to aid current and future braided river conservation and restoration efforts.
