Adolescent self-reported health in the Umeå region : Associations with behavioral, parental and school factors / Självrapporterad hälsa hos ungdomar i Umeåregionen, och dess samband med normrelaterat beteende samt med föräldra- och skolfaktorer

Nygren, Karina January 2012 (has links)
This thesis consists of a quantitative and a qualitative study. The quantitative study (articles I-III) aimed to examine how self-reported health in adolescence is associated with behavioral, parental, and school factors. Through a survey directed at all adolescents in grades 7-9, data were collected in 2005 in a region in northern Sweden (n=5060). Statistical methods were used to analyze the survey data: chi2tests, multivariate logistic regressions and multilevel logistic regressions. Results showed that even though most adolescents reported good health, there were also rather large proportions of adolescents who reported headaches, stomach aches and feelings of stress. Girls reported poor health to a higher extent than boys, a difference that was larger in grade 9 than in grade 7. The results also showed that being norm compliant was associated with good self-reported health. Furthermore, perceiving relations and communication with parents as poor was associated with poor self-reported health; however, this relationship could not explain gender differences in self-reported health. Continuing on, analyses showed that there exist greater variations in self-reported health between students (within a school) than between different schools. On an individual level, poor relations to teachers, bullying and truancy were associated with poor general health. The qualitative study  (article IV) sought to examine barriers to and facilitators of utilization of local school survey results within a school setting. In 2011, 21 school district managers and principals within a Swedish municipality were interviewed. Analyses were performed using a qualitative content analysis. The results from the qualitative study showed that the dissemination and utilization of school survey results appeared as two interrelated phases in one process. Barriers and facilitators differed qualitatively depending on the phase, dissemination or utilization. In conclusion, professionals as well as researchers need to consider the complexity of adolescent health and its social determinants. Adolescent health is a concern for multiple sectors in society, which highlights the need for further development of collaborations between professionals in relevant fields, such as health care, school and social services.

The management of parent volunteers at secondary schools in the Limpopo Province

Simango, Hasani Richard 30 November 2006 (has links)
This study explores the management of parent volunteers in secondary schools in the Limpopo Province. A literature study was conducted to investigate the existing theories and models of managing parent volunteerism in secondary schools. The literature revealed how parent volunteer programmes are conducted in countries, which have developed successful programmes such as the United States. The present state of parent volunteering in secondary schools in South Africa is also investigated to reveal the current situation. A qualitative investigation in two secondary schools in the Limpopo Province was done. Data was gathered by means of semi-structured interviews with principals and deputy principals. Analysed data revealed that there are no volunteer programmes which are implemented in secondary schools in the Limpopo Province and school managers do not have the necessary skills to implement and manage parent volunteer programmes at secondary schools. / Educational Studies / (M.Ed (Education Management))

This paper is a case study carried out in order to identify the extent of the problem of criminal acts on the premises of the schools‟ state of Minas Gerais and the difficulties encountered by school management teams to deal with such occurrences in teaching units. The research aims to also identify the schools and the State Department of Education effectiveness way of recorded the events crimes at schools. The paper proposes an action plan to improve the records of these cases allowing the Public Administration process activities to combat the violence school problem and suggest action for preparation of the members of school management teams to deal with occurrences in institutions teaching. The research theme was chosen because of the recurring incidence of inquiry received by the Central Organ sectors of the State Department of Education of Minas Gerais - SEE/MG - asking as school managers should act to have knowledge of the occurrence of criminal acts inside the schools. In addition, the violence rate in schools from the state of Minas Gerais has concerned to teachers and students, as a research conducted by UFMG in 2012 has shown. The reasons given came from the necessity of an action of record and preparation of school administrators were analyzed in the light of theoretical references from authors such as Guadalupe (2012), Condé (2012) and Diniz (2009), beyond be based on applicable federal and state laws. The methodological approach consists on bibliographic, documentary and empirical research, questionnaires to school managers and the regional leaders of SEE/MG, and interviews with relevant sectors managers of the Education Department. The research demonstrates the shortage of preparedness actions of school management teams‟ members to deal with the problem of violence in schools and the absence of computerized system of SEE/MG for reporting incidents in order to guide state actions for the development of procedures to combat criminal actions in teaching units. The result of the researches and the theoretical basis justify the contents of propositional chapter, composed by recommendation actions directed by the implementation of events registration system of criminal acts and the preparation of school management teams to deal with such acts.

Teacher attrition in Zambian schools : an educational management analysis

Kukano, Crispin 08 1900 (has links)
The purpose of this empirical study was to establish how school managers address the problem of teacher attrition in public secondary schools in Zambia with a view of developing strategies that may be used to reduce teacher attrition in schools. The objectives of the study were to examine how teacher attrition affects the functioning of public secondary schools; find out which factors influence teacher attrition in public secondary schools; and determine and describe which measures are used to sustain teacher retention in public secondary schools. The study adopted a case study design employing mainly the qualitative approach of data collection and analysis. However, quantitative methods of data collection and analysis were also employed to a lesser extent to complement the qualitative aspect. The data were collected through interviews and questionnaires. The sample consisted of 33 participants comprising 30 school managers and three (3) district education board Secretaries from Chongwe, Lusaka and Kafue Districts of Lusaka province. The qualitative data were analysed using thematic analysis while the quantitative data were analysed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) Version 20 to generate descriptive statistics. The findings revealed that teacher attrition positively correlates to poor staffing levels and poor student achievement (r=0.812). The study further established factors influencing teacher attrition in public secondary schools as being poor working conditions, lack of administrative support, low salaries, low social status accorded to teachers and lack of continuous professional development were among the major causes of teacher attrition. In terms of measures used by school managers in addressing the issue of teacher attrition, these include: high salaries, reduced workload, adequate administrative support, fair promotion and fair treatment, participatory decision making, and creating a positive school climate. Basing on the study findings, the following recommendations are made; that school managers should coordinate organisation climate, that is, they should start with transformation of their individual school’s organisational climate in order to create an enabling atmosphere which reduces teacher attrition. School managers should effect strategies for teacher retention through continuous professional development; they should ensure that all programmes and activities aim at addressing the actual continuous professional development needs of the teachers. School managers should apply sufficient school management support. The MoE provide explicit preparation for school managers by providing and showing them the significance of managing teacher attrition. / Educational Management and Leadership / D. Ed. Problems experienced by school governing bodies in the execution of their financial management task: a case study

Lekalakala, Madikela Titus 31 March 2006 (has links)
This research focuses on problems encountered by School Governing Bodies (SGBs) in executing their financial task in four schools situated in the Ramotse Area, Hammanskraal, north-east of the city of Tshwane. The research methodology, which was employed, can be described as qualitative, exploratory and descriptive by nature. Data was collected by means of two focus group interviews, one involving the chairpersons of SGBs and the other involving the managers of the same schools. An analysis of the data has revealed a number of financially related problems, which SGBs in the Ramotse Area experience, amongst other things that parents fail to meet their financial obligations and subsidies tend to arrive late. The most important recommendation made is that SGBs should be trained both better and more frequently. / Educational Studies / M. Ed. (Education Management)

The impact of the attitudes of school managers on the implementation of outcomes-based education (obe) in secondary schools

Zulu, Mdumiseni Petros 30 June 2003 (has links)
In South Africa Outcomes-based Education (OBE) has been adopted as the approach to education in a new educational dispensation. A point of departure is that school managers have a managerial responsibility to educators. The effective implementation of OBE in secondary schools is essential to the success of OBE. The study investigates the impact of the attitudes of school managers on the implementation of OBE in secondary schools and makes recommendations for the improvement of practice. The problem was conducted by a literature study and empirical investigation using a questionnaire and semi-structured interviews administered to a small sample of principals, deputy principals and heads of departments in selected secondary schools in the Umlazi South district of Kwa-Zulu Natal. Findings showed that school managers in the sample have negative attitudes towards the implementation of OBE. The Department of Education should develop school managers by means of empowerment programmes to equip them with new management skills. / Educational Studies / M. Ed. (Education Management)
