Process evaluation of general data migration guidelines : A comparative study

Eng, Dennis January 2010 (has links)
<p>Information systems form the backbone of many organizations today and are vital for their daily activities. For each day these systems grows bigger and more customized to the point where it is heavily integrated in the current platform. However, eventually the platform grows obsolete and the system itself becomes an obstacle for further development. Then the question arises, how do we upgrade the platform while retaining customizations and data? One answer is data migration which essentially is the process of moving data from one device to another. The problems of data migration becomes evident with extensive and heavily customized systems which effectively lead to the absence of any general guidelines for data migration. This thesis attempts to take a first step in finding and testing a set of general migration guidelines that might facilitate the creation of future migration projects. This is achieved using a comparative analysis of the general migration guidelines contra the process of migrating data between different editions of the Microsoft SharePoint framework. The analysis attempts to find out if the general guidelines are general enough for this migration process and leave it to future research to further assess their generality. This paper will also investigate the importance of using incremental migration and the ability to perform structural change during migration as well as how these issues is handled by the built in migration tool of SharePoint. In the end the general guidelines proved to be sufficient to express the SharePoint migration process and should therefore be used for further research to assess their worth in other projects. In terms of the second issue, the built-in migration tool proved weak in handling either incremental migration nor structural change which is unfortunate due to the benefits these features bring.</p>

Jämförelse av aggregeringswebbdelar i MOSS 2007 / Comparison of aggregationwebparts in MOSS 2007

Aghili, Mohammed January 2010 (has links)

Tjänsteorienterad arkitektur med AJAX : Service oriented architecture with AJAX

Ekman, Nils January 2008 (has links)
<p>Through the entry of web 2.0 the technologies behind web development has changed dramatically. Asynchronous JavaScript and XML (AJAX) is the umbrella term for different techniques that make it possible to build rich and interactive user interfaces in today’s web browsers. Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) describes how common services can be bundled and published so they can be consumed by different systems.</p><p>The company SYSteam Evolution AB, which has requested this project, wanted a web application that shows a graphical activity chart in order to easier view ongoing projects. The goal for this project is to develop a demo platform that shows how AJAX and SOA can be used to create flexible and reusable applications. To reach the goals, many different frameworks and technologies need to cooperate and work together.</p><p>This report will describe the different technologies that have been used and explain the different steps in the development job.</p><p>The result of the work has lead to a demo platform that uses many different technologies to show a graphical activity chart. The job requestor and the author are very pleased with the result of the work.</p> / <p>Genom intåget av web 2.0 har teknologierna bakom webbutveckling ändrats drastiskt.

Utilization of Sharepoint as a tool for preserving organizational knowledge : a case study of South African public sector.

Madiba, Wilheminah. January 2014 (has links)
M. Tech. Business Information Systems / Knowledge Management is an increasingly important driver in today's economy which functions mainly on knowledge. In view of that, knowledge is valuable asset for an organization to sustaining competitive advantage. The challenge faced by organization is the loss of critical organizational knowledge held by employees who are departing due to circumstances such as retirement, termination of contracts, resignation and transfer. This challenge is further aggravated by the lack of capturing and preserving knowledge before experienced employees depart from the organization. The purpose of this study is to assess the effectiveness of SharePoint in the public sector as a tool for Knowledge Preservation. The objectives of the study were; to determine the use of SharePoint in the public sector; the processes used to preserve the knowledge within the public sector; the benefits of using SharePoint for Knowledge Preservation; the challenges of using SharePoint for knowledge preserving and the factors for effective use of SharePoint as a tool for preserving knowledge.

Collaboration in the rural schools of the Eden/Karoo District and the use of knowledge management tools

Webber, Zwelibanzi Samson 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MPhil (Information Science))--University of Stellenbosch, 2008. / Rural multi-grade schools are faced with many challenges when it comes to teaching and learning. Educators at these schools are required to teach more than one grade at a time with several learning areas. This research suggests that this problem can partly be resolved by engaging educators in a kind of learning network where they will assist each other when it comes to curriculum development and planning. The researcher understands the conditions and the problems associated with these schools. Hence an online collaboration process was put to the test. It is argued in the literature review that the nature of the curriculum requires that the educators should collaborate at a certain level. This has led the researcher to believe that there is a need to provide an overview of collaborative software available in the market. To this effect a decision was taken to test the suitability of Share Point (SP) as collaboration software as well as the attitude of educators towards collaboration. Emerging from the research is a visible absence and silence on collaboration in schools. Although educators embrace the process of online collaboration there are some problems that need to be taken care of first. Some of these relate to the availability of computers, both at home and at work and the fact that some educators are not computer literate enough to face the challenges of online collaboration. Other shortcomings to the success of the research are also highlighted. The research concluded by recommending the use of SP in schools to alleviate the plight of rural school educators. The use of SP should also be accompanied by an extensive training programme to ensure the optimum utilisation of the system. On the whole the researcher is also of the opinion that online collaboration can work provided that it is monitored very thoroughly.

Web Design for Multiple Platforms in Microsoft SharePoint 2013

Claug, Erik January 2013 (has links)
As mobile devices become more common when surfing the web there is an increasing demand of making web sites adjusted to other devices than computers. One common platform on the web is Microsoft SharePoint. In this report I look into one method of how to develop web sites that work on multiple devices in Microsoft SharePoint. I will be looking into different techniques as separate web sites compared to responsive web design. By exploring the approach of mobile first I try to find a working solution of techniques. I also look into another method that is suggested in a book and look into how Bootstrap could be used in the process. I will also look into content to identify what content need to be adjusted between different devices. I find that navigation is an important part of a web site and look into different methods of handling navigation on mobile devices. By analyzing different techniques and looking into what content is going to be adjusted a solution is proposed where the navigation is adjusted in a responsive design. The design is converted into a SharePoint masterpage and then fixed using stylesheets and JavaScript. The solution works on a web site with a complex site structure since it focuses on how to adjust the navigation.

User Support in MOSS 2007

Hällholm, Jon January 2009 (has links)
The purpose of this report is to present the findings from the thesis work performed at Qurius Sweden (former Ibitec). The goal was to evaluate how usable Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 (MOSS 2007) was in general and how usable two portal solutions created for MOSS 2007 were in particular. The goal also consisted ofevaluating how SharePoint could be improved in terms of usability and accessibility. The last part of the thesis work was to create a dynamic help tool, from where application specific help could be created. The usability was evaluated with a variant of usability engineering. Not all of the original method could be used because the products analyzed were already finished. The results from the analysis show that MOSS 2007 is quite usable, especially when it comes to document handling. It is also possible to create web pages and sites with ease. MOSS 2007 lacks in usability when it comes to presenting information to the user regarding what is going on in the system and. The system can also be quite complex and much to grasp for an end user. Solutions created in MOSS 2007 follows closely the usability of MOSS 2007 but they can be made very usable if only certain aspects are considered. Example of improvements could be the placement of the help system, clearer error messages and an overlook of managing user rights. The dynamic help tool was created in the programming language C# and based on the .NET platform. The implementation is a so-called Web Part that can easily be inserted on a page in MOSS 2007. The help tool uses the built in help system in MOSS 2007 for editing present help files and for adding new files to it. The help tool has a very minimalistic design and the focus was on the tasks it should be performing rather than a nice-looking interface. To ensure usability for the help tool, future work should be done, testing the product with real users and apply other usability methods to improve the help tool. As of now, no usability methods have been used while developing the help tool, nor have any tests with real users been performed. This is to be considered as future work.As a conclusion, both MOSS 2007 and the solutions created for it can be said to have a certain degree of usability shown from the evaluations. Improvements can be done, and should be, in order to increase the users’ experience. With the help tool, it is now possible to create solution specific help for a project intended for MOSS 2007.
