Aerodynamic Testing of Variable Message Signs

Meyer, Debbie 12 November 2014 (has links)
The increasing nationwide interest in intelligent transportation systems (ITS) and the need for more efficient transportation have led to the expanding use of variable message sign (VMS) technology. VMS panels are substantially heavier than flat panel aluminum signs and have a larger depth (dimension parallel to the direction of traffic). The additional weight and depth can have a significant effect on the aerodynamic forces and inertial loads transmitted to the support structure. The wind induced drag forces and the response of VMS structures is not well understood. Minimum design requirements for VMS structures are contained in the American Association of State Highway Transportation Officials Standard Specification for Structural Support for Highway Signs, Luminaires, and Traffic Signals (AASHTO Specification). However the Specification does not take into account the prismatic geometry of VMS and the complex interaction of the applied aerodynamic forces to the support structure. In view of the lack of code guidance and the limited number research performed so far, targeted experimentation and large scale testing was conducted at the Florida International University (FIU) Wall of Wind (WOW) to provide reliable drag coefficients and investigate the aerodynamic instability of VMS. A comprehensive range of VMS geometries was tested in turbulence representative of the high frequency end of the spectrum in a simulated suburban atmospheric boundary layer. The mean normal, lateral and vertical lift force coefficients, in addition to the twisting moment coefficient and eccentricity ratio, were determined using the measured data for each model. Wind tunnel testing confirmed that drag on a prismatic VMS is smaller than the 1.7 suggested value in the current AASHTO Specification (2013). An alternative to the AASHTO Specification code value is presented in the form of a design matrix. Testing and analysis also indicated that vortex shedding oscillations and galloping instability could be significant for VMS signs with a large depth ratio attached to a structure with a low natural frequency. The effect of corner modification was investigated by testing models with chamfered and rounded corners. Results demonstrated an additional decrease in the drag coefficient but a possible Reynolds number dependency for the rounded corner configuration.

Deaf people and mental well-being : exploring and measuring mental well-being in British Sign Language

Rogers, Katherine January 2013 (has links)
Background: The prevalence of mental health difficulties in d/Deaf populations is higher than that of the hearing population. The association between mental health difficulties in childhood and well-being in adulthood amongst d/Deaf populations, including as perceived by Deaf people themselves, has been little explored. Access by d/Deaf people to mental health services is poor. In addition, there is a paucity of mental health assessments available in British Sign Language. Aims: The aims of this thesis were; (i) to understand the association between childhood and adulthood mental well-being in d/Deaf populations; (ii) to find out how well the standardised mental health assessments can be used with d/Deaf populations; and (iii) to explore Deaf people’s perspectives on mental well-being. Methods: BSL versions of four mental health assessments (the Clinical Outcomes in Routine Evaluation – Outcome Measure (CORE-OM), the Patient Health Questionnaire(PHQ-9), the Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD-7), and the Work and Social Adjustment Scale (WSAS)) were produced by carrying out a translation process to ensure that the statements in the assessments are linguistically and culturally meaningful to a Deaf population. The reliability and validation of the mental health assessments were examined by piloting them with d/Deaf populations. In order to gain Deaf people’s own perspectives on mental well-being, four focus groups were set up in England. Results: Thematic analysis of the focus group data identified pre-disposing factors in childhood that Deaf participants believed would affect adult mental well-being. The CORE-OM BSL, PHQ-9 BSL, GAD-7 BSL, and WSAS BSL were found to be reliable and have been validated. The pilot study which compared the reliability between the BSL and English version of one mental health assessment (CORE-OM) as completed by d/Deaf people found that two domains had lower reliability in English in comparison with the BSL version. Conclusions: Reliable standardised instruments in BSL are required to identify and assess common mental health problems amongst Deaf people. These are now available. Deaf people identified a number of factors that are important to well-being, for example, ease of communication with others, a strong sense of identity, a ‘can do’ attitude, and a firm sense of belonging. These factors are of importance if we are to attempt to reduce the prevalence of mental health difficulties in d/Deaf populations in the future.

La transition du notariat privé au notariat public dans la campagne florentine (XIe-XIIe siècles) / From private notariate to public notariate in the florentine countries (11th-12th century)

Salini-Acimi, Alicia 28 June 2019 (has links)
Between 11th and 12th century, the notariate begins a fundamental transition. This mutation is already a very clear prefiguration of a notariate still practiced today. In the cities, the political regime of the communes, the economic and commercial revival and the reborn of the roman law allow for the emrgence of the public notariate. A special capacity of authentification begins to be granted to the notaries ; they are no more private praticians and they acquire, more and more explicitly, a public quality. This upset has impacts on many elements of the practice of the notariate. Therefore, those elements are the ones analysed in this study, to determine when this transition is happening in the countries. The monastery of Passignano is located in a valley in the south of the florentine contado. Both isolated and crossroad of three important medieval cities, his archival materials is a wonderful viewpoint to evaluate the time of the switching. Thus in the countries of Florence, the indices of the apparition of a public notariate are more and more visible between the 11th and the 12th century. The formalism becomes less and less rigorous, the graphics is increasingly readable, snippets of grammatical latin are disseminated and legal concepts are more and more audacious. Mainly, the sign manual of the notaries is progressively evolving. This sign is transiting from a local and impersonal sign manual to an original and individual sign ; it is switching form a validation sign to a validation and identification sign.

P Svensson, Gustav, Eriksson, Filip January 2020 (has links)
Tre attacker har utförts: 307 redirect attack, Man in the middle och Replay attack.

Hands Over Our Ears: Tensions In the Liminal Spaces Concerning English as a Second Language Education for d/Deaf Newcomers to Canada

Black, Ari 11 November 2019 (has links)
This thesis by article investigates the question “What discourses are (re)produced by policy documents and administrators relating to ESL programmes for Deaf newcomers to Canada?” The surrounding monograph begins with a description of the research context and a review of the relevant literature and ends with concluding remarks. The article contains a condensed version of the context and literature review, the methodology, discussion, conclusions, and relevance to the field of education. The research uses discourse analysis to examine federal, provincial, and schoolboard documents, and participant interviews. There were two participants, one Deaf and one hearing, who both administer ESL programmes for Deaf newcomers. The findings suggest that both the policy documents and the participants exist in tensions between the majority Discourse and the Deaf community Discourse. This area of research is pertinent to second language education for Deaf newcomers, a growing population in the wake of mass-migrations.

From sign to emblem : a study of the coats and distinctive marks of cattle among the Fula of eastern Senegal

Ba, Sada-Mamadou 14 January 2016 (has links)
Learning to recognize the differences, sometimes extremely fine, between each head of cattle in his herd is a long process for the Fula cowherd. The man who has become an "expert" in telling differences that other, less experienced cowherds overlook is said to have ganndal, knowledge. The ability to notice tiny differences between cows by using several criteria (the color of the coat and "marks" on it, the shape and size of horns, etc.) is a form of ganndal that, though valued, does not suffice to turn the cowherd into a "true scholar". On the other hand, the ability to discover, under the set of traits identifying an individual cow, patterns that can be used to read the "signs" of fate endows the cowherd with a quite different reputation. The man with such a reputation is considered to be a sort of seer of the invisible, a siltigi; he will be both feared and respected. The cowherd who has attained this degree of ganndal is said to know sifa. Sifa, a specific form of vision and knowledge, constitutes in Fula culture an intellectual and ethical ideal. Strictly speaking, this is not an individual ideal. Every family, lineage segment, local group or tribe seeks to enhance its status through the heritage of ganndal to which it lays claim. This heritage is jealously kept with all sorts of measures being taken to keep rival groups from seizing it.

Constructions gradables dans la Langue des Signes Italienne / Gradable constructions in Italian Sign Language

Aristodemo, Vita Maria Valentina 01 December 2017 (has links)
The aim of this dissertation is to investigate gradable constructions in Italian Sign Language (LIS). In the semantic literature, the debate about the existence of degrees as ontological elements has been very active. In this dissertation, we show that Italian Sign Language pro- vides evidence not only for the existence of degrees, but also for degree-denoting variables. First, degrees can be overtly represented as ordered points (i.e loci) in signing space by means of an iconic mapping. Second, degree expressions can be established on points in space (i.e loci), which can be anaphorically linked to later pointing pronouns, as in the nominal do- main, temporal and modal domains. Additionally, focusing on comparative constructions, we show that articulatory properties of comparative markers influence the interpretation of comparatives. Specifically, the presence/absence of sharp deceleration makes visible a specific degree which is then interpreted as a deictic element. Furthermore, we show that the visibility of degrees is not just limited to the adjectival domain but that it extends to the temporal domain, but it extends to the temporal domain. Specifically, in temporal constructions the temporal scale is iconically represented as a set of ordered points in the horizontal plane. Moreover, temporal markers, as comparatives markers, express a relation between the time arguments of the two clauses. To account for these properties, we propose an analysis of temporal clauses in terms of comparative clauses. Finally, we move to LIS absolute gradable adjectives and show that the iconic component of some of these adjectives can be analyzed as co-speech gestures. However, while co-speech gestures are optional, the iconic component of LIS absolute adjectives is an integral part of the adjectives and it cannot be omitted.

Reformulating a link between social influence network theory and status characteristics theory and a method for testing that link.

Hollander, James Fisher 05 1900 (has links)
The impact of social influence from others on choices made by subjects and how this influence accumulates was studied by secondary analysis of reported experimental data. To explain this impact a link is proposed between social influence network theory (SINT) and status characteristics theory (SCT). The link formula transforms stay probabilities for different status relationships of subject with one disagreeing other agent into horizontal axis coordinate values while stay probabilities of subject given two disagreeing others are transformed into vertical-axis coordinate values corresponding to the horizontal axis values for further analyses. The results support the utility of the proposed link between the two theories.
