Debate concerning the relationship between ethics and aesthetics has re-emerged in contemporary aesthetic literature. All of the major contemporary positions, I argue, treat this relationship as existing between the "moral value" of art and its aesthetic value. Throughout this thesis I analyse the various "value- based" positions (ethicism, moderate moralism, and contextualism) and examine whether their accounts of this relationship hold. My aim is to explore whether an alternative account - in which the aesthetic value of art can be enhanced or negated through its "moral significance", rather than its "moral value" - is plausible. I argue, that given the failure of these value- based positions we should favour a "significance- based contexutalist" approach that is better equipped to account for the complexity of both our engagement with art, and the moral reflection that it invites.

Les transformations subies par le monde du travail et la pénurie des talents invitent les organisations à réfléchir en profondeur sur les mécanismes qui permettront de susciter l’engagement chez les employés et de bénéficier des effets corolaires qui y sont associés. La reconnaissance est identifiée comme étant un des leviers d’action potentiels, mais aucune étude sérieuse ne s’est penchée sur le lien entre cette variable et les différentes bases et cibles de l’engagement au travail. Par ailleurs, il semblerait que l’estime de soi joue un rôle dans le lien unissant la reconnaissance et l’engagement au travail, mais son rôle demeure inexploré. La présente étude, de nature transversale, vise à mieux comprendre les liens unissant les sources de reconnaissance et le déséquilibre effort/reconnaissance aux différentes bases et cibles de l’engagement au travail. De surcroît, elle cherche à clarifier l’effet potentiellement modérateur de l’estime de soi dans ces relations. Au total, 305 employés d’un établissement hospitalier ont participé à l’étude. Les résultats obtenus ont permis de constater que la reconnaissance, peu importe sa source, est fortement corrélée à l’engagement au travail affectif et normatif, et plus faiblement à l’engagement de continuité envers les différentes cibles. Pour sa part, le déséquilibre effort/reconnaissance est négativement relié à toutes les combinaisons bases/cibles de l’engagement. L’étude a permis de découvrir que l’estime de soi modère seulement quelques liens, notamment celui entre la reconnaissance provenant de l’organisation et l’engagement affectif envers l’organisation, celui entre les trois sources de reconnaissance et l’engagement de continuité envers l’organisation (sacrifices élevés), celui entre le déséquilibre effort/reconnaissance et l’engagement de continuité envers l’organisation (sacrifices élevés), et enfin celui entre le déséquilibre et l’engagement de continuité envers l’équipe de travail. L’ensemble des résultats obtenus illustrent l’importance de faire appel à la reconnaissance provenant de différentes sources afin de susciter des formes désirables d'engagement chez le personnel, alors que le rôle de l’estime de soi demeure secondaire.

Tidigare forskning har visat att arbetet i olika aspekter har stor betydelse för människans psykiska välmående. Vi valde att undersöka hur det är att ha varit utanför arbetsmarknaden och att sedan arbeta i ett socialt företag. Syftet med studien var att skapa en förståelse kring vilka behov arbetet uppfyller samt vilken betydelse ett socialt företag har för en individ. Hur upplever individer den period de var arbetslösa? Uppfyller det sociala företaget något särskilt behov för individen? Det teoretiska ramverk vi använde oss av i studien var; den latenta deprivationsmodellen, humanitärt arbete samt inklusion/exklusion. Vårt empiriska material samlades in genom sju semistrukturerade intervjuer med individer som varit utan arbete men som idag arbetar i ett socialt företag. Här har informanternas upplevelser varit i fokus för att fånga deras unika berättelser. Resultatet visar att informanterna mådde psykiskt dåligt tiden de var utan arbete men att de idag mår bättre som en effekt av att arbetet uppfyller flera väsentliga behov för att en individ ska känna ett psykiskt välmående. Det framgick även att medbestämmande och delaktighet, som är ledord för arbetsförhållandena på det sociala företaget, spelar en stor roll för individens mående i positiv bemärkelse. / Previous research has shown that the work in various aspects is of great importance for human mental well-being. We have chosen to examine how it is to have been unemployed and then to get a job in a social enterprise. The purpose of the study was to create an understanding of the needs that work contributes to and what the importance of social enterprise is for an individual. How have individuals experienced their unemployment? Do social enterprises fulfill any particular needs for the individual? The theoretical framework we use in the study is; the latent deprivation model, humanitarian work and inclusion/exclusion. Our empirical material was gathered through seven semi-structured interviews with individuals who have been unemployed but are currently working in a social enterprise. Through these interviews, we have been able to capture the experiences of the seven individuals and focused on their unique stories. The result have shown that the informants felt mentally ill at the time they were without work, but because work satisfies several essential needs they feel much better today. Co-determination and involvement are key words for the working conditions in social enterprises, which played a major role for the individuals’ positive well-being.

Este estudo trata de exposições de fins educativos que tenham como objetivo oferecer uma reflexão sobre design. Para tanto, importa conceber a exposição como modalidade de projeto, o que torna oportuna a fundamentação teórica em design de exposição, alternativa na área do design gráfico-ambiental. As bases conceituais do trabalho compreendem a exposição como produto que constitui variável na percepção dos visitantes. O objetivo geral é elaborar critérios projetuais a partir da análise, em três estudos, sobre as ações de organizadores e designers, com vistas à comunicação com o público. A pesquisa é de caráter exploratório, para a qual lançamos mão de entrevistas semi-estruturadas. Os casos analisados, em três cidades do país, nos anos de 2010 e 2011, revelaram que, além de contribuir para a difusão do design, estes eventos constituem modos de refletir sobre os desafios do design e o papel do designer na contemporaneidade. / This study concerns educative exhibitions that aim to offer a reflection on design. Therefore the exhibition is conceived as a design type of project, which makes timely the theoretical foundations on exhibition design, an alternative in environmental-graphic design. The conceptual basis comprehends the exhibition as a product which is a variable in the visitors’ perception. The aim is to generate project criteria throughout the analysis in three studies regarding the actions of organizers and designers, considering the communication with the audience. The research is of exploratory kind, to which we lay hold of semi-structured interviews. The cases analyzed in three Brazilian cities during the years of 2010 and 2011 revealed that, besides its contribution to the diffusion of design, these events consist ways of reflecting about the challenges of design and the designer's role in contemporary society.

Colecionar imagens de momentos importantes tais como nascimentos, casamentos, aniversários e viagens é costume de quase toda família, mas por que registrar e guardar estas lembranças? A fim de explorar detalhadamente a relação dos membros da família com seus acervos fotográficos, rastreando os sentidos dos álbuns, realizamos uma investigação tendo como participantes duas famílias: Aragão e Silva. Cada família possuía três voluntários que foram entrevistados individualmente, tendo como foco as narrativas instigadas por fotografias previamente selecionadas de momentos importantes para a família. A conduta básica do entrevistador pautou-se por intervenções mínimas, deixando os entrevistados discorrerem sobre as imagens. Como principais resultados observamos que, apesar das diferenças quanto ao relacionamento com o álbum da família, as fotos guardadas permitem a revisitação de experiências, a re-significação de acontecimentos e a criação de narrativas. No contato com interlocutores possibilita-se a produção de sentido de forma que o sujeito se reconhece como parte de uma história construída coletivamente. Dessa forma, o álbum de família é um importante acervo documental iconográfico e patrimônio do grupo familiar. Funciona não somente como arquivo de registros da memória, mas, sobretudo, como imagens disparadoras de afetos, sentimentos e recordações instigadores de narrativas capazes de ampliar a compreensão do passado e do presente. / Abstract: Photographs are constantly around us in newspapers, magazines, advertizing bill boards, art galleries and specially through the family albums. Collecting pictures of special occasions like births, weddings, birthdays, and trips are a custom of almost any family. Why register and file these souveniers? In order to explore in detail the relation of the family with their photo album and trace the significance of the photo album for the family, a recent study between two families, Aragão and Silva was carried out. This study involved six volunteers, three in each family who were interviewed individually on their personal memories of each pre-selected picture shown of their own family pictures. The behavior of the interviewer was based on minimum interventions, leaving the participants free to discourse about the images. As a result it was observed that regardless of the differences in relationship of the photo album, the pictures allowed the participants to revisit experiences, re-signify events and create vivid memory narratives. The significance of recollective memory is made through contact with others and one recognizes himself as part of a history constructed collectively. In this way, the family album is an important iconographic documented legacy for the family and therefore, not only a file of registered souveniers but over all as images of affection, feelings and memories that instigate narratives capable of extending/amplifying the past and the present. / Mestre

O objetivo: compreender as significações manifestas por estudantes de um 5º ano do Ensino Fundamental, na aprendizagem do conceito matemático de área, por meio de uma Atividade Orientadora de Ensino, a partir no movimento lógico-histórico desse conceito Os procedimentos metodológicos pautam-se nos elementos estruturantes da Teoria da Atividade, por considerar a pesquisa uma atividade singular, com a finalidade de compreender o fenômeno educativo, delineando, como ações, a pesquisa e o estudo mais aprofundado acerca dos fundamentos teóricos e históricos basilares nesta investigação, bem como o levantamento bibliográfico, a elaboração das situações desencadeadoras de aprendizagem apoiadas nos nexos conceituais, a organização e o desenvolvimento da AOE. Dentre as operações, destacam-se: a coleta dos dados, por meio de gravações audiovisuais e das produções dos estudantes, a transcrição e organização desses dados para sua análise. A realização da AOE junto aos estudantes permitiu a análise do movimento do pensamento relacionado à significação desse conceito, em situação de ensino e aprendizagem. Os dados receberam uma análise qualitativa, considerando o processo de desenvolvimento do pensamento teórico constituído nos nexos internos e externos do conceito de área, como a delimitação da superfície, a divisão da superfície delimitada, a mensuração da área por unidade discreta e a padronização da unidade de medida. Os resultados indicam que as significações, enquanto processo de apropriação do conceito área, foram elaboradas no decorrer das situações desencadeadoras de aprendizagem articuladas aos nexos conceituais. Espera-se – respeitados os limites deste estudo – colaborar para a formação continuada de docentes, almejando a superação da sua prática pedagógica. / This study is based on theoretical assumptions Historical-Cultural Psychology and in the methodological paths of historical-dialectical materialism. The objective: to understand the meanings expressed by students of a 5th grade elementary school, in the learning of the mathematical concept of area, through a Teaching Activity, starting from the logical-historical movement of this concept. The methodological procedures are based on the structuring elements of the Theory of Activity, considering the research a unique activity, with the purpose of understanding the educational phenomenon, outlining, as actions, the research and the more detailed study about the basic theoretical and historical foundations in this investigation, as well as the bibliographic survey, the elaboration of the situations triggering learning supported in the conceptual links, the organization and the development of the AOE. Among the operations, the following stand out: the collection of data, through audiovisual recordings and students productions, the transcription and organization of these data for analysis. The realization of the AOE with the students allowed the analysis of the thought movement related to the meaning of this concept, in a teaching and learning situation. The data received a qualitative analysis, considering the process of development of the theoretical thought constituted in the internal and external nexuses of the concept of area, as the delimitation of the surface, the division of the delimited surface, the measurement of the area by discrete unit and the standardization of the unit of measurement. The results indicate that meanings, as process of appropriation of the concept area, were elaborated in the course of the situations triggering learning articulated to the conceptual links. It is hoped - respecting the limits of this study - to collaborate for the continuous training of teachers, aiming at overcoming their pedagogical practice.

Este trabalho é um estudo sobre as conclusões de uma revisão bibliográfica sobre a avaliação e comunicação de avaliação do impacto ambiental praticada no Brasil. É dada especial atenção para a importância da utilização de critérios, padrões e métodos de avaliação de impactos ambientais que pretendendo incorporar mais eficiência nos estudos de impacto ambiental. Assim, o objetivo desta pesquisa foi a realização de uma proposta, incluindo o desenvolvimento de procedimentos e aplicar na avaliação de impactos ambientais situações relativas à sua formulação, aplicação e interpretação da significância dos critérios, conclusões e recomendações pertinentes para respeitar o objetivo da avaliação de impacto ambiental que é garantir a viabilidade ambiental das atividades humanas. / Abstract: The evaluation of the significance of environmental impacts remains an important critical yet poorly understood component of environmental impact assessment practice. This work is a study upon the findings of a bibliographic review about the evaluation and communication of environmental impact assessment in Brazil practice. Particular attention is given to the use of significance criteria, thresholds and EIA methodologies intending to incorporate more efficiency of environmental impact statement. Thus, the aim of this research was the accomplishment of a proposal including the development of procedures to apply in EIA issues surrounding the formulation, application and interpretation of significance criteria, conclusions and recommendations relevant to respect the aim of EIA that in provide environmental viability of men activities. / Mestre

The lasso is a popular tool that can be used for variable selection and esti- mation, however, classical statistical inference cannot be applied for its estimates. In this thesis the classical and the group lasso is described together with effici- ent algorithms for the solution. The key part is dedicated to the post-selection inference for the lasso estimates where we explain why the classical inference is not suitable. Three post-selection tests for the lasso are described and one test is proposed also for the group lasso. The tests are compared in simulations where finite sample properties are examined. The tests are further applied on a practical example. 1
