Tackling Jim Crow: Segregation on the College Gridiron Between 1936-1941

Gregg, Kevin Callaway January 2005 (has links)
Thesis advisor: James O'Toole / This thesis examines the extent of Jim Crow segregation in college football in the era immediately preceding World War II by focusing on three black stars: Wilmeth Sidat-Singh of Syracuse, Lou Montgomery of Boston College, and Leonard Bates of New York University. Sidat-Singh was passed off by Syracuse as a Hindu before his real ethnicity was revealed. Montgomery was benched by his Catholic university on six separate occasions, including two bowl games. Bates was the beneficiary of a massive student protest for his inclusion, but ultimately was benched by the supposedly liberal NYU. These benchings of northern players against southern teams shows the degrees the south went to in order to impose segregation on every level of society. Perhaps more importantly it shows how willing northern schools were to acquiesce to these southern demands in favor of expediency. / Thesis (BA) — Boston College, 2005. / Submitted to: Boston College. Unitariedade de modelos de spin-3 /

Bittencourt, Raphael Schimidt. January 2019 (has links)
Abstract: In this work we suggest a basis of spin projection and transition operators for rank-3 tensors. We use it in order to determine the coefficients of the Singh-Hagen model. We also provide a general expression for obtaining the propagator for rank-3 theories via full symmetric tensor without parity breaking. In addition, we perform the Noether Gauge Embendment (NGE) procedure on the SH model in D dimensions and verify its particle content. Finally we analyze the unitarity of a new sixth-order spin-3 doublet model obtained through the soldering approach of the fifth and sixth order self-dual models which do not require auxiliary fields. / Mestre

Sandten, Cecile 21 October 2011 (has links)
"Bombay is the future of urban civilization on the planet.

Dimensioneringsmetoder för platta på mark utsatt för koncentrerad last / Analysis methods for slabs on ground subjected to concentrated loading

Johansson-Näslund, Sackarias, Gripeteg, Johan January 2016 (has links)
Purpose: Despite many previous articles and tests on the subject “analysis methods for concrete slabs on ground subjected to concentrated loading” there is still uncertainty on which analysis method to use and if the results correspond to real failure loads. The purpose of this study has been to evaluate and compare different analysis methods for slabs on ground subjected to concentrated loading.Method: Initially literature studies was performed where different analysis methods were studied. Three methods were chosen based on different aspects. It was found that A. Losbergs (1961) method was mainly used in Sweden while other countries in Europe used Meyerhofs (1962) method. Rao & Singhs (1986) method has a similar approach compared to Meyerhofs but ads two different types of failure modes. Two peer re-viewed articles were also chosen from which secondary data could be retrieved. The articles described tests where concrete slabs were loaded until failure. The test condi-tions were used to perform calculations with the three analysis methods. A comparison was made between the test results and the results from calculations.Findings: It is concluded that there are some differences between Losbergs, Meyerhofs and Rao & Singhs analysis methods. Largely the three methods require the same input, they differ in selection of analysis solution, but despite a degree of variation of the calculation results the overall picture for the different loading cases are quite unified. For central loading all analysis methods result in a capacity lower than the test values, varying from 56% to 93% of the failure load. Concerning edge and corner cases the spread of results is even wider. Calculations for the reinforced slab results in a capacity higher than the test values while calculations for the plain concrete slab results in a capacity considerably lower than the test values.Implications: The results in this study indicates that the three analysis methods are applicable for internal loading. The spread of the results makes it difficult to estimate the margin to the actual failure load, but the safety factors according to Eurocode 2 should provide a safe failure margin. Regarding edge and corner cases it is more diffi-cult to draw conclusions due to the large spread of results. Further research and testing is needed.Limitations: The study is limited to three analysis methods and the results from two articles where two different concrete slabs were tested. Inclusion of additional analysis methods and articles with test results would expand the generalizability of the study. However due to the limitations of the extent of the study and disposable time this was not possible. Keywords: Meyerhof, Rao & Singh, Losberg, concrete slab on ground, concrete slab on grade, point load, concentrated load.

A role for toll-like receptor-4 in pulmonary angiogenesis following multiple exposures to swine barn air

Juneau, Vanessa Jade 14 June 2007
Swine barn air is a heterogeneous mixture of dust, bacteria and irritant chemicals including ammonia and hydrogen sulphide. Gram-negative bacteria are commonly found in swine barn air and significantly contribute to pulmonary disease in unprotected swine barn workers, through the endotoxin moiety, lipopolysaccharide (LPS). Toll-like Receptor-4 is the ligand for LPS. It is found on many cell types including monocytes, macrophages, neutrophils, endothelial cells, and to a lesser extent, epithelial cells. The severity and outcome of acute lung injury following barn air exposures depends upon the balance between epithelial and vascular endothelial repair mechanisms, including angiogenesis. Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF) is an endothelial mitogen produced by mesenchymal and alveolar Type II epithelial cells and by activated bronchial airway epithelial cells. Research investigating the role of cytokines in angiogenesis has shown that close proximity of immune cells and endothelial cells modulates the production of various compounds that regulate vascular function. Given that LPS is the ligand for TLR4 there appeared to be a role for TLR4 in angiogenesis, particularly following endotoxin exposure. To determine whether this was occurring, we examined whether exposure to swine barn air alters vascular density in the lungs and the role of TLR4 using a murine model. Toll-like Receptor-4 wild-type (C3HeB/FeJ) and TLR4 mutant (C3H/HeJ) mice were obtained and exposed to swine barn air for 1-, 5-, or 20-days for 8 hours/day. Wild-type animals showed a 127% increase in vascular density after 20-days barn air exposure. Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor-A protein levels were decreased by 0.62-fold after one-day swine barn air exposure in wild-type animals, indicating that VEGF-A is being used as a pro-angiogenic mitogen. Transcription of VEGF-A mRNA was increased in wild-type animals after all swine barn air exposure periods. The receptor VEGFR-1 showed increased mRNA transcription over all time points. These effects were only observed in TLR4 wild-type animals, indicating that these effects are mediated by TLR4. Further, VEGF-A and VEGFR-1 appear to be involved in the manifestation of TLR4-induced angiogenesis in the lung.

High-Speed Hybrid Current mode Sigma-Delta Modulator

Baskaran, Balakumaar, Elumalai, Hari Shankar January 2012 (has links)
The majority of signals, that need to be processed, are analog, which are continuous and can take an infinite number of values at any time instant. Precision of the analog signals are limited due to influence of distortion which leads to the use of digital signals for better performance and cost. Analog to Digital Converter (ADC), converts the continuous time signal to the discrete time signal. Most A/D converters are classified into two categories according to their sampling technique: nyquist rate ADC and oversampled ADC. The nyquist rate ADC operates at the sample frequency equal to twice the base-band frequency, whereas the oversampled ADC operates at the sample frequency greater than the nyquist frequency. The sigma delta ADC using the oversampling technique provides high resolution, low to medium speed, relaxed anti-aliasing requirements and various options for reconfiguration. On the contrary, resolution of the sigma delta ADC can be traded for high speed operation. Data sampling techniques plays a vital role in the sigma delta modulator and can be classified into discrete time sampling and continuous time sampling. Furthermore, the discrete time sampling technique can be implemented using the switched-capacitor (SC) integrator and the switched-current (SI) integrator circuits. The SC integrator technique provides high accuracy but occupies a larger area. Unlike the SC integrator, the SI integrator offers low input impedance and parasitic capacitance. This makes the SI integrator suitable for low supply voltage and high frequency applications. From a detailed literature study on the multi-bit sigma delta modulator, it is analyzed that, theneeds a highly linear digital to analogue converter (DAC) in its feedback path. The sigma delta modulators are very sensitive to linearity of the DAC which can degrade the performance without any attenuation. For this purpose T.C. Leslie and B. Singh proposed a Hybrid architecture using the multi-bit quantizer with a single bit DAC. The most significant bit is fed back to the DAC while the least significant bits are omitted. This omission requires a complex digital calibration to complete the analog to digital conversion process which is a small price to pay compared to the linearity requirements of the DAC. This project work describes the design of High-Speed Hybrid Current modeModulator with a single bit feedback DAC at the speed of 2.56GHz in a state-of-the-art 65 nm CMOS process. It comprises of both the analog and digital processing blocks, using T.C. Leslie and B. Singh architecture with the switched current integrator data sampling technique for low voltage, high speed operation. The whole system is verified mathematically in matlab and implemented using signal flow graphs and verilog a code. The analog blocks like switched current integrator, flash ADC and DAC are implemented in transistor level using a 65 nm CMOS technology and the functionality of each block is verified. Dynamic performance parameters such as SNR, SNDR and SFDR for different levels of abstraction matches the mathematical model performance characteristics.

Gordon-Marcoux, Karine 01 1900 (has links) (PDF)
