A Critical Review on “Image”-based Tourism : A Case of Slow Traveler

Mosayebi, Golrokh January 2011 (has links)
This essay is based on a critical review of dominant form of tourism industry that causes a system of meaning, making as consequences of reproducing of ‘image’ in media. Images of promised destinations bombard us everywhere, on billboards, small advertisement bar on social networks websites, on magazine and even in movies and TV series in designated smart way. These images define what we should experience when we are in such destinations and at the same time affirm any other forms of experience which is not recognized in these matrixes of images are not welcome. This means for example the meaning of safety and comfort in a travel is only achieved by the way that  has been already constructed in media through series of campaigns of a special tourism agency. One can say this mechanism forces us to accept that there is no other ways of having comfortable travel without going by airplanes and tourist packages without accommodating in hotels, without going to designated touristic areas in destination and so on and so forth. Here I draw on other alternative ways of doing travel like Slow tourism as a way of breaking such image making system in media as well as a way of experiencing what seems to be un-experience-able. For this I conducted a series of interviews with an experienced slow traveler who cycled several times between various countries. This essay is a qualitative/analytical text based on experiences of one slow traveler and critical reviews of  literature provided in this area.

Cez chodník prebehuje ježko. / A hedgehog runs through the sidewalk.

Reisová, Kristína Unknown Date (has links)
Hedgehog runs across the sidewalk is a collection of texts about the everyday beauty of the world, about slowness and concentration. These are stories seen, perceived, heard by me. Stories where I stopped or they stopped me. About how the sun and the plant create a shadow, how storks fly in a circle over us, how a badger runs in the dark, how a pine cone falls from a tree, how cats sit in the dark, how they caress a plant over leaves, how a night butterfly sits in the corner of the room the dog watches something in the grass, as a rainbow spot lies on the road, as they find that it rains the least of the trees under the pine tree around, as a cloud of steam hovers over the forest, as tamarinds close their leaves at night, ... I write these texts and transfer them to handmade paper, which I made from collected papers and plants. I pin them story after story with a pin. They then meet together on a round table, where people can meet them and experience them with their eyes and touch.

The specificity of the aesthetics of slowness in contemporary Romanian cinema

Popa, Emilia Diana January 2018 (has links)
Contemporary Romanian cinema, particularly in its internationally successful instances, displays formal characteristics that have often led to its being seen in terms of the so-called Slow Cinema trend in contemporary cinema. This thesis proposes that there is something distinctive about slowness in contemporary Romanian films, similar to and yet different from Slow Cinema. Through a detailed analysis of films made by Cristi Puiu and Cristian Mungiu, two of the most representative contemporary Romanian filmmakers, Romanian slow films emerge as a less stringent form of slowness characterised by tension. This thesis first looks at some of the ways in which slowness can be developed in film - through the use of the long take and the trope of waiting along with the use of stillness and silence. Within this slowness an attitude of contemplation emerges, a characteristic that is key to Slow Cinema. Through close textual analysis of a number of films with a reputation for slowness, both classic and more recent examples, this thesis looks at how the techniques used to develop slowness in film allow for variation and how they can be used not only to create this attitude of contemplation but also to create tension. While this aspect has been less discussed with the more prevalent focus on Slow Cinema and its themes of contemplation, tension can be identified in a variety of films, both those considered part of Slow Cinema and those considered slow films. The distinctiveness of slowness in contemporary Romanian cinema is partly to do with its being rooted in Romanian culture. This study looks at Romanian cinematic and cultural inheritance, specifically at how slowness figures in this history. This thesis contributes to the existing body of research on contemporary Romanian cinema addressing its most salient characteristic, its sense of slowness, by placing it in relation to wider discussions about slowness and Slow Cinema as well as by linking its distinctiveness to wider cultural notions and practices of temporal organisation as well as the social history of the nation.

It is assumed that if everyone has access to quality and citizen education, several issues, that are now growing in volume and increasing the congestion in the Judiciary, could be settled in systems other than judicial. Therefore, this thesis begins with the history of citizenship, since the outbreak of its first traces in the Greek polis to the present day, including the achievements and setbacks in this historic route. Then, it presents the Brazilian people formation, from the Portuguese colonization, emphasizing characteristic traits of our society, especially flexible or relative ethics; the "Brazilian way", and the principle of duality. Later, the causes of slow pace of justice and their overlaps will be described, as well as the effects of the delay according to the fundamental guarantee of reasonable duration of the process and the challenges to its effectiveness. Finally, from the analysis of social and familiar relationship disintegration, effects of postmodernity, the citizen education is presented as a remedy for the proceedings backlog. People who are well-educated in schools and as citizens may help to reduce the complex issue of slowness in the Judiciary. Besides, they may claim their rights and fulfill their duties. In this particular aspect, the key role of higher education institutions revives, especially the bachelor's degree programs in Law, which can and should be the leaders and propagators of such civic education. The research is conducted by the inductive method and the research technique applied was bibliographic / O presente estudo tem por objetivo apontar alternativas que possam contribuir para a redução da morosidade do Poder Judiciário. Slow Motion

Miller, Andie 19 February 2007 (has links)
Student Number : 0310050V - MA research report - School of Literature and Language Studies - Faculty of Humanities / The rationale of this work is a peripatetic exploration, both literally and intellectually: the form echoes the content. The creative work stands on its own, but the theoretical reflection contributes retrospectively to the work as part of this peripatetic process. The theoretical reflection picks up the theme, though more formally, in order to create one coherent project. I have aimed to create a dialogue between the theory and creative work on a road that goes both ways. If it appears that the section of theory devoted to the poets is disproportionately long compared to the rest of the work, this is because I discovered in the course of my exploration that poets seem more predisposed to wandering than others.

An Exploration of Interactions and Design Implications of Low-interactivity Games

Zhou, Xiaoding January 2023 (has links)
This paper introduces low-interactivity games as a new term to refer to games that provide players with very limited interaction by design. A grounded theory approach is conducted for this research, with reviewing literature and analyzing games specifically under the categories of casual games, idle games, walking simulators and minimalist games, in order to identify the available types of interactions in low-interactivity games. The design implications of games in this field are also investigated, indicating that low-interactivity games can be designed for companionship and awareness due to their core feature of supporting in-game inaction of the player. The design solutions and values of low-interactivity games are also discussed to argue for a responsible attitude towards the design of games in this space. The proposed term provides starting points for future research and development of low-interactivity games.

Coreogeografias da lentidão: gestos de ralentamento / Choreogeographies of slowness: gestures on slowdown

Costa, Thiago de Araújo 10 August 2017 (has links)
The thesis nourishes itself on connections between different acquirements from Urban Geography, Architecture, Urbanism, Dance and Philosophy in order to understand the kinetic dimension of the city and to approach the presence of slowness as a resistance mode to the homogenization of urban spaces. In an attempt to strengthen the debate on contemporary urban experience, the movement of bodies in public spaces is emphasized with the purpose of reflecting on sensitive leaks established from situations of urban slowdown that make up a coreogeography of slowness. In this sense, the ostensive acceleration that affects the body in the big cities is understood as one of the vectors of the global biopolitics, which is scratched in mismatched gestures of artists and thinkers. This research corncerns contribuitions from different authors, such as Nietzsche,Paul Morand,Pierre Sansot, Milton Santos, Ana Clara Torres Ribeiro, among others. These gestures feed another apprehension of the contemporary city, using the slowness in operations that are both poetic and political. Besides the commitment of corporeity in the public space, the thesis focuses on the shuffling of the kinetic regime, stressing its thresholds and thinking about coreogeographic works.

Systemskifte : En studie av tröghet vid fyra brytpunkter inom svensk välfärdspolitik / Transformation of Welfare Systems : A Study of Slowness at Four Breaking Points i Swedish Welfare Policy

Borg, Per January 2004 (has links)
The purpose of this dissertation is to describe, explain and understand how slowness appeared when some decisions were made in the area of welfare policy and how this slowness was eliminated. The study focuses on major changes. It is argued that such changes follow another logic than small gradual adjustments. Four breaking points have been selected for a deeper analysis: the pension policy decisions of 1913 and 1994 and the housing policy decisions of 1935 and 1992. These decisions led to the emergence of fundamentally new institutional structures concerning the relation between the central government and the citizens. The study shows that an established institutional structure within a welfare policy area generated mental constructs and decision rules that governed political decision-making. This governance resulted in slowness in the form of lengthy decision-making processes. The fundamental institutional structure was being altered only when the mental constructs were broken down. A common feature was that the decisions were first made when discontent with the prevailing order became so strong that it overwhelmed the fear of a new institutional structure. The general tendency was also to shape the fundamental changes in relation to the citizens so that the changes could be portrayed as small. The established mental constructs are the determining explanation for slowness. The interest organizations played a secondary role, as their interests are shaped in accordance with the mental constructs. Their resistance was declined at the same time when the mental constructs were broken down. The individuals – agents of change – that constantly worked for the change of system in reality appear to be significantly more interesting than hindering organization. Their influence showed a recurring pattern.
