Chroniese moegheidsindroom : 'n ekosistemiese perspektiefMorgan, Leona 06 1900 (has links)
The present study is a qualitative ecosystemic exploration of the phenomenon known as chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS). The paradigm shift from the Newtonian epistemology to the epistemology of cybernetics, has important implication for research and the conceptualisation of CFS, as indicated in the study. The traditional, reductionist conceptualisation of CFS in research and treatment methods, is discussed. The suppositions of second order cybernetics and social constructionism, are discussed and applied in the description of two systems where CFS occurs. The research methodology of the present study is generated from the theoretical suppositions.
Die implications of the use of the ecosystemic epistemology for
the conceptualisation of CFS are indicated. The re-conceptualisation
of CFS as a transition process is discussed and guidelines are
given for future research and psychotherapy. The present study is
a description of the unique meanings and solutions that the families generated during the changes that accompany CFS. / Psychology / M.A. (Kliniese Sielkunde)

Narrative pastoral therapy : being an Indian pastoral therapist to white counselleesSingh, Laurance 11 1900 (has links)
For over four decades, segregation, as the master narrative in South Africa, favoured the development of whites as mental health workers and empowered them to research and write about the lives of people of colour, thus becoming the experts on their lives. In this project I do something in reverse by being an Indian pastoral therapist to white counsellees. The project describes a postmodern narrative approach and social construction epistemology and the application of these towards culturally sensitive and respectful ways of doing pastoral therapy. Important feedback from white counsellees on race, culture and spirituality enabled me to reflect
on culturally sensitive ways of doing pastoral therapy in a multicultural post Apartheid South Africa. A narrative perspective also provided me with a voice to tell my own story in a way that was healing to me. / Philosophy, Practical & Systematic Theology / M. Th. The use of horseriding in the lives of children with cerebral palsy : an ecosystemic explorationTredoux, Yolanda 01 1900 (has links)
In the realm of therapeutic horseback riding one becomes aware of the
idiosyncratic way in which each unique individual depicts his or her experience of a
therapeutic riding endeavor. This study focuses on the meanings attributed to
therapeutic riding in the lives of children with cerebral palsy because the complementary
use of horses in therapy with these children may be of great importance to the medical
fraternity. This exploration investigated the influence of the children's relationship with a
horse, and the parents' perception of horseriding as a complementary therapy to
occupational- and physiotherapy. The theoretical background and a literature review on
therapeutic horseback riding and cerebral palsy were presented in this study.
This study followed a holistic, ecosystemic epistemology. Both a qualitative
approach and a quantitative approach were adopted as two complementary sides of a
more encompassing whole and provided rich descriptions of the context and research
process. / Psychology / M.A. (Clinical Psychology)

The unacknowledged family member : the role of animals in systemsCarruthers, Angeline 11 1900 (has links)
For centuries humans and animals have shared their lives. However, it is only in
recent decades that the phenomenon of the human-animal bond and the possible
therapeutic implications thereof has begun to be explored. Due to this
exploration, many research programmes have sprung up around the world,
investigating the implementation of animals as an intervention in various
institutions. These programmes have produced overwhelmingly positive and
encouraging results. However, the research remains sparse where the significance
of a naturally occurring human-animal bond is concerned. From within an
ecosystemic worldview, the relationship between humans and animals in the
wider family system has not been extensively investigated. This dissertation
explores such a relationship, investigating the meanings and experiences within
the relationship, and how this relationship and significant systems around it
impact one another. The implications and possible therapeutic nature of this type
of relationship will be considered. / Psychology / M.A. (Clinical Psychology)

Career resilience : a pastoral narrative approachWessels, Francois 11 1900 (has links)
Text in English / This research investigated the ability of employees to survive experiences of major career changes and how they managed to build career resilience during the process. Adopting an action research approach, it continues to research the role the church can play in this process, suggesting ways in which the exponents of practical theology, and more specifically, pastoral ministries can extend their role into non- or de-institutionalised areas, becoming industrial or organisational pastoral professionals in their own right.
The second research question investigated ways in which career resilience can improve agency in upholding values in the face of the employee exploitation onslaught?
A narrative approach was used and discourses of ethics and power were discussed. It was indicated how these could be subjected to a process of deconstruction to create alternative and preferred career stories. / Philosophy, Practical & Systematic Theology / M.Th. The journey of a trainee therapist : from an intrapsychic to an ecosystemic descriptionAarons, Zahava 11 1900 (has links)
This is a postmodernist dissertation contextualised within the new
epistemology.
The dissertation's descriptive methodology mirrors a personal journey
from intrapsychic to ecosystemic psychology which operates within the
domain of language and narrative discourse. As such it is founded on the
principles of ecosystemic rather than Newtonian thinking.
A conversation between various participants constructs the dissertatioi1
through polyphony and academic dialogue. This is then deconstructed through
the use of metalogue thereby allowing the dissertation to operate
simultaneously on a number of different levels.
As it is a postmodernist text, the structure is in a sense an 'anti-structure'
in that it is indirect while it is still acknowledged as a construction. In this
way it is constructed and deconstructed in terms of its own premises.
Expectations in terms of conventional dissertation formulae are challenged
without negating academic requirements. / Psychology / M.A. (Clinical Psychology)

Order out of chaos : an alternative meaning construction for lossWaisbrod, J. H. (Jodi Hayley) 04 1900 (has links)
This thesis constitutes a narrative that explores an alternative meaning construction for the experience of loss. During the telling of this story, I consider the appropriateness of adopting the 'new paradigm' approach for this particular thesis, and the constructivist and social constructionist epistemological assumptions underlying such an approach. I delve into the use of 'self as researcher under this epistemological umbrella. This is followed by an exploration of 'chaos theory' and its application to social systems. And finally, I consider the usefulness of this theory in constructing meanings for loss experiences on various systemic levels
within my own family system. / Psychology / M.A.(Clinical Psychology)

Hypnotic analgesia in obstetrics : an ecosystemic descriptionMarkman, Andrea 02 1900 (has links)
In this study, hypnotic analgesia in obstetrics is explained in terms of ecosystemic
thinking, as opposed to traditional conceptualisations of hypnosis. Five case studies
were used. Each case is described in detail, as well as the therapeutic rationale behind
each case, in order to present the reader with an understanding for the thinking behind
the doing of ecosystemic hypnotherapy. The study utilises a new paradigm approach
to research which is explained and is in keeping with ecosystemic epistemology. / Psychology / M.A. (Clinical Psychology)

Irreverence : a psychotherapeutic stanceVan Rooyen, Hanlie 07 1900 (has links)
The development of the concept of irreverence is examined in terms
of its historical, theoretical and metatheoretical contexts. The underlying
assumptions of the concepts of neutrality, curiosity, and irreverence are
distinguished and contextualised. Neutrality is discussed with reference to
Milan systemic therapy and first- and second-order cybernetics, while
curiosity is examined in the light of constructivist and narrative approaches
to psychotherapy. It is argued that these two concepts represent two sides
of a dualism, which is transcended through irreverence. Irreverence is
interpreted as a postmodern stance, involving the questioning and
relativising of therapists' basic assumptions. The pragmatic components of
an irreverent stance, namely self-reflexivity, orthogonality, flexibility and
accountability, are explored with reference to related concepts in the work
of other authors. Throughout the text metalogues are used in an attempt to
engage reader and author in a collaborative enterprise of acknowledging
and reevaluating their own basic assumptions. / Psychology / M.A. (Clinical Psychology)

Narratiewe groepterapie met adolessente : die ontwikkeling van 'n alternatiewe voorkomingsintervensieDreyer, Lydia 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (DPhil (Psychology))—University of Stellenbosch, 2006. / This study has two purposes which are complementary:
Firstly, an alternative prevention intervention was developed in order to introduce
narrative group therapy as a therapeutical practice within preventative interventions in
South Africa. Secondly, a training protocol was developed which can be used to train
psychologists, counsellors, social workers, teachers and relevant persons to apply
narrative group therapy as an alternative preventative intervention in their communities.
In the context of this study, the personal stories of the adolescents who took part in this
study reflect the problem stories of the Jamestown and Cloetesville community near
Stellenbosch.
After identifying 20 adolescents who experience problem stories with high-risk themes at
two secondary schools in the respective communities, ten narrative group sessions were
held, with social constructionism as philosophical approach.
The training protocol was primarily of an experiential nature, consisting of 40 hours of
training and 12 hours of supervision, with special focus on the personal stories of the four
master’s degree psychology students who underwent training and facilitated the group
therapy with the adolescents.
For the purpose of this study qualitative research was done. During the development of
the alternative preventative intervention, a qualitative description was given of the
content of the personal stories of the adolescents within the interactional space of
narrative group therapy and personal stories. The focus during this qualitative description
was the following:
• to establish whether the therapeutic process facilitated change,
• to develop a new understanding of the therapeutic process by specifically focusing
on applying narrative therapy in a group, and • to train and empower narrative-group-therapy facilitators to facilitate the
narrative- group-therapy process.
In this study two narrative-analytical research methods were used. Firstly, a qualitative
narrative-analysis method was used to evaluate the psychotherapeutical transcripts. A part
of these sessions was dedicated to this purpose and is presented in transcribed format.
Secondly, the content-analysis method was applied: session data was examined,
categories of the adolescents’ and students’ narratives were defined and thematic
statements were extracted from the text, classified and sorted into categories or groups.
This study provides supportive evidence that narrative group therapy as an alternative
preventative intervention can be introduced as a therapeutic practice in South Africa. In
addition, an effective training protocol was developed which can be used to train
psychologists, counsellors, social workers, teachers and other relevant individuals to use
narrative group therapy as an alternative preventative intervention in their communities.
