[en] COMMUNICATION AND ETHNOMETHODOLOGY AT SÃO CRISTÓVÃO FAIR: SOCIAL INTERACTION AND COMMERCE IN THE CHINA STORE / [pt] COMUNICAÇÃO E ETNOMETODOLOGIA NA FEIRA DE SÃO CRISTÓVÃO: INTERAÇÃO SOCIAL E COMÉRCIO NA LOJA DO CHINACYNTHIA MACIEL DUARTE 28 April 2020 (has links)
compõem a cidade e o país. A atitude de pesquisa escolhida foi a
Etnometodologia.
A investigação permitiu
As situações analisadas refletem ainda características da sociedade brasileira
referentes à valorização hierárquica e à existência de questões de gênero no trato
entre homens e mulheres. / [en] The understanding of the management of small business was the motivation
to this research developed at São Cristóvão Fair, a Municipal Centre of
Northeastern Traditions placed at Rio de Janeiro city, in Brazil, whose formation
reflects the social, economic, cultural and political aspects that make up the city
and also the country. The research attitude chosen was Ethnomethodology. This,
combined with Conversation Analysis, permitted the data be obtained from the
environments and the people daily interactions, in a naturalistic way, locally
situated. The commercial unit of the Fair from which the study was developed
was the China Store, place where were made video recordings, photos, talks, and
observations that originated the analysis categories developed in this
investigation, related to other spaces of the Fair when relevant. The investigation
let to comprehend that internal competition and inequality among enterprises are
strong characteristics of the Fair. The study still evidenced that the daily job of a
trader responsible for micro and small businesses in this environment, like China,
includes the emphasis on physical presence, the constant effort to replace
customers, take measures to be independent in some measure from collective
structure, few friendship relations and fundamental collaborative relations, besides
many moments of sociability. The analysed situations still reflects characteristics
of Brazilian society related to hierarchical valuation and the existence of gender
issues in dealing between men and women too.

Small Business Sustainability Orientation - Exploring the Case of Malmö Hardware StoreDiehl, Theresa, Greenvoss, Amanda, Klee, Susanne January 2015 (has links)
This paper explores a small business’s sustainability orientation through a case study, by identifying leadership and organization characteristics of the business that contribute to the sustainability orientation. The studied case is a small hardware store. The case is explored primarily through interviews and supported by in-store observations. It looks into four service areas of the business, and captures the perspective of owner, staff, customers, neighboring businesses as well as a licensee. Led by a notion developed early on in the research and reinforced by case data, business characteristics related to social interactions between the business and its customers are found to be a third dimension in the business’s sustainability orientation in combination with leadership and organization. This study puts forward the importance for small, sustainability-oriented businesses to engage in social interactions, as this is found to have the potential to strengthen the triple bottom line of the business along with leadership and organization. In order to create a deeper understanding of the case we characterize leadership, organization and social interaction impacts on the sustainability orientation of a small business. This contributes to broaden CSR theory in very small businesses and serve as a basis for practitioners. This study aims at particularizing aspects of a small business’s sustainability orientation. While it is not claimed that the results of this case study are broadly generalizable, learnings are transferrable to other like contexts.

LIME PLASTER USE AT LATE BRONZE AGE KALAVASOS-AYIOS DHIMITRIOS (CYPRUS): EVIDENCE FOR APPLICATION-SPECIFIC RECIPES AND THE CREATION OF SOCIAL SPACEWallace, Peter T January 2017 (has links)
Kalavasos-Ayios Dhimitrios (K-AD; Figure 1) is a Late Bronze Age (LBA) settlement on Cyprus. It is notable for having among the earliest examples of urbanism and monumental architecture on the island along side the sites of, for example, Kition, Alassa, Enkomi, and Maroni (Philokyprou 2011; Fisher et al. in press). The LBA on Cyprus marked the beginning of urban society, economy and architecture in Cyprus (Fisher et al. in press). This study explores the social processes associated with the transition to urbanism represented by the entangled relationship between the architectural creation of social spaces and the use of these spaces as platforms for the creation and negotiation of power and influence (Fisher 2009a, 2009b; Fisher et al. in press). Specifically this study will concentrate on the construction of plaster surfaces, the immobile architecture of these social spaces, as indexes of the social development at K-AD during the LBA.
Analysis of pyrogenic lime and gypsum plasters was carried out using high-resolution microscopic methods based on the integration of petrography and soil micromorphology. These techniques are employed to optically examine in-situ and oriented plaster samples in laboratory thin section. Laboratory Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) analysis was applied to loose sediments to obtain spectroscopic data when necessary.
Following the findings that lime plaster recipe variation is the result of human choice (Kingery et al. 1988; Love 2011, 2013a) the results of this analysis shows that the LBA architects at K-AD produced different recipes for different utilitarian uses and also that the construction of elite spaces demanded complex recipes that extend beyond utilitarian requirements, which can be classified as more “expensive,” resource-draining procedures (Kingery et al. 1988; Love 2011). Plaster is used at K-AD for both functional purposes and as an active component in societal creation and transformation. / Thesis / Master of Arts (MA) / Craft specialization is a core feature of urban life but the process of specialization is not perfectly understood. This thesis seeks to explore the use of lime plaster for constructing surfaces at the Late Bronze Age (LBA) site of Kalavasos-Ayios Dhimitrios (K-AD) on the island of Cyprus. Previous research has revealed a central, monumental complex, among the first of its kind on the island, surrounded by an early city. How did the LBA people create their living environment in this new setting? This thesis has shown, through the analysis of lime plaster features, floors and walls that the LBA inhabitants of K-AD were able to create diverse, specialized surfaces with a specialized lime plaster tradition in a scale and complexity that went beyond structural requirements, suggesting these surfaces were constructed with the explicit intent for creating space imbued with social meaning.

The Relationship Between High School Teachers' Self-Reported Social and Emotional Competencies and Teacher Social and Instructional Teaching Practices and the Implications for Professional LearningDahl, Jill Danielle 14 March 2022 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships among high school teachers' self-reported social and emotional competencies (SECs), social interaction teaching practices, and instructional interaction teaching practices. Yoder's (2014) research suggests to successfully implement social-emotional learning (SEL) practices, teachers must have strong social and emotional competency skills (Brackett et al., 2009; Jennings and Greenberg, 2009). This study included a quantitative descriptive method to examine the anonymous survey data collected. Additionally, the data were examined for possible correlations between social, and instructional interaction teaching practices to identify areas of strength or weakness and suggest professional learning options for teachers related to their scores. This study sought to answer the following research questions:
1. What is the relationship among high school teachers' self-reported social, and instructional interaction teaching practices that influence students' social, emotional, and academic skills?
2. What is the relationship between educators' self-reported self-efficacy of their social and emotional competence and how it influences their ability to implement social, and instructional interaction teaching practices?
3. What is the relationship between teachers' overall social interaction score and their overall instructional interaction score?
4. What do the scores from the overall social interaction score and the overall instructional interaction score suggest about the professional learning needs of the participating high school teachers?
High school teachers in this study who reported a higher self-efficacy in positive social interactions had a higher self-efficacy in social interactions influencing students' social, emotion, and academic skills. High school teachers with a high self-efficacy in Teacher SEC: Social Interaction Teaching Practices strongly correlated to a higher self-efficacy of Teacher SEC: Instructional Interaction Teaching Practices. Furthermore, high school teachers with a higher self-efficacy in their Overall Social Interaction to that of their self-efficacy of their Overall Instructional Interaction also strongly correlated. Conversely, high school teachers who reported higher self-efficacy with instructional interaction did not report the same level of self-efficacy of their social interaction, albeit the finding was deemed small. The study suggests division and school leaders could prioritize supporting teachers' development of their self-efficacy of their social and emotional competence. / Doctor of Education / The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship among high school teachers' self-reported social and emotional competencies (SECs), social, and instructional interaction teaching practices. The study examined the possible correlations between the self-efficacy of social, and instructional interaction teaching practices to identify areas of strength or weakness and to identify and differentiate the professional learning needs of teachers related to their scores. This study included High School teachers from one school division in Virginia. The high school teachers participated in a pre-published survey from Yoder, 2014a (see Appendix A).
The findings suggest teachers with a higher self-efficacy in their SECs were more likely to implement them in their teaching practices. Whereas high school teachers that had a higher self-efficacy in their Instructional Interactions practices did not have a statistically significant higher self-efficacy in their Social Interaction practices. Future actions could include building leaders can provide on-going professional learning to improve the self-efficacy of teachers' SECs and implementation of school-wide practices. Additional implications and future study suggestions are shared.

Embracing Rascals in the Online Battlefield : Game Mechanics that Promote Collaboration Between Players in PvPvE Multiplayer Competitive ShootersMitsigkola, Sofia January 2023 (has links)
This thesis project examines social interactions in PvPvE Online Multiplayer Survival Shooters and proposes mechanics that promote connection among players, hooking rascal players who invent new ways to play the game, into the game spirit rather than engaging in toxic play. To do that, I followed a Research-through-design methodology, engaged with games, game designers, and gamers, and designed storyboards presenting examples of mechanics that promote players' connection. The results are Annotated Portfolios that frame the knowledge contribution as guides for designing mechanics for connection. The first annotation is “Helping or Asking for help” as a way to establish the purpose of communication, the second is “Temporarily teaming up” as a way to introduce a transitional state of sharing information such as knowledge and location, and the third one is “Risk and Reward” as the main aesthetic and motivation of target players.
