UTANFÖRSKAP,MACHOKULTUR OCHVARUMÄRKET FÖRORTEN : En kvalitativ analys av svenska hiphoptexter / Alienation, macho culture and the brand the Projects : A qualitative analysis of Swedishhiphop lyrics.

Hjoberg, Felicia January 2018 (has links)
Swedish hip hop is a growing genre that can be understood to be connected with socially stigmatized areas. The purpose of this work is to map out and analyze the content of chosen Swedish hip hop songs. In the study Swedish hip hop lyrics were analyzed in two parts. The first one was an outline of 100 hip hop songs in order to map out the occurrence of different themes, and the second one was an in-depth analysis of ten songs. The material were analyzed with help of previous research and the theoretical concepts territorial stigmatization, macho culture and branding. The result of the study shows that there’s aspects of territorial stigmatization and macho culture within the songs, as well as branding regarding the Projects. The study can be understood to give some insight through the thematic features that can be found within Swedish hip hop. Among other things the possible consequences for the young men listening to this type of music were discussed.

Approche didactique d'une question socialement vive agronomique, la réduction de l'usage des pesticides, modélisation du raisonnement agro-écologique et socioéconomique d'élèves et d'étudiants : appuis et obstacles à l'enseigner à produire autrement / Didactic approach of an agronomic socially acute question, the reduction of pesticide use, the design of agro-ecologic socioeconomic reasoning of pupils and students : supports and obstacles in teaching-learning to produce differently

Cancian, Nadia 30 November 2015 (has links)
The Ecophyto Plan imposes a 50% reduction of pesticides by 2025, generating a paradigm shift in crop protection. To ‘Produce differently’ reconciling techno-economic, environmental and social performances is an issue. Agricultural education plays a key role in training future farmers. Teaching-learning the construction of agro-ecological and socioeconomic reasoning favoring alternatives to pesticides, linked in sustainable development, contributes to prepare future farmers to develop agroecosystems using fewer pesticides. It is an agronomic socially acute question that involves emerging, distributed, plural and controversial knowledge, which supposes to consider the risk/uncertainties of the solutions and values of the actors. Our research crossing the didactic of socially acute questions and of agronomy provides a model for problem situation favoring the emergence of adequate reasoning and an analytical grid of the levels of complexity of the reasoning. These model and grid have been tested with pupils/students in two levels of vocational agricultural training (baccalaureat and post baccalaureat). The quali-quantitative analyzes show that pupils/students build Agro-socio and economic reasoning, that students are better equipped to design alternative than pupils at the “baccalauréat” level. By revealing supports and obstacles in teaching-learning to ‘produce differently’, the device is an educational tool for structuring the learning of pupils/students on the complexity of the issues, while expanding the scope of reference in knowledge.

A theoretical survey was carried out to identify origin, development and main concepts of social responsibility, pointing out its indicators, principal models and users and/or beneficiaries of social sustainability reports. Furthermore, the main theories related to socially responsible behavior were explored in order to support the composition of research tools and the analysis of results. The GRI-G4 model elaborated by the Global Reporting Initiative served as an additional resource. Purposing to show the relation between theme and object of this study, the sugar cane industry was characterized, presenting its economic, environmental and social impacts and further researches relating social responsibility and economic activity of this industry. The applied methodology consisted of explanatory, quantitative and qualitative research, utilizing questionnaires of a total population of 184 sugar cane industries (individuals or groups of companies), getting a return of 128, representing 5% margin of error and 96% confidence interval. In order to attest the hypothesis, modelling of structural equations by SmartPLS were applied. The results demonstrate that Brazilian sugar cane industry has reached an advanced stage in relation to the importance and practical accomplishment of the socially responsible actions raised by the research, but demonstrate the need to advance, mainly, the evidence of these actions. It also showed that the social dimension exerts major influence when compared to the other dimensions in the CSR.

Realisations of performance in contemporary Greek art

Antoniadou, Alexandra January 2018 (has links)
This is the first study to approach, both historically and theoretically, the emergence and development of performance art in Greece from the 1970s to the 2010s. Drawing on an interdisciplinary framework - including feminist theory, philosophy, sociology, art history, and more - the study aims to address an evident gap in histories of contemporary Greek art. The research begins with the emergence of performative artistic practices in the 1970s, in the conditions set out by the seven-year Dictatorship (1967-1974) and follows, selectively, the complex trajectory of these practices while investigating their connection with wider socio-political and economic developments. The thesis should not be read as a survey, despite being the first book-length analysis of Greek performance art in both English and Greek. The material included here has been selective (drawn out of years of field research) and yet presents, and represents, the spectrum of themes and positions making up the history of performance art in Greece. My contention is that the rise and establishment of performance art in Greece reflected both the political ferment of the time (early 1970s) and an enquiry into the possibility of flight from traditional media. The dual aim of this study is, first, to facilitate and encourage the integration of performance art in a revised Greek art history; and, second, to contribute to an expansion of performance art histories in an international context through the negotiation of hitherto unknown material synthesised in a study of adequate length. This thesis has required large-scale in situ research and overcoming the major obstacle of the absence of relevant publicly held archives. This was one reason why even an elementary linear history of performance art had been such an overwhelming task in the past; a second reason is the overall marginalisation of performance art theory in the Greek context. Through the Greek paradigm, the thesis illuminates new aspects not only of performance but also of post-performative participatory practices, engaging new conceptualisations. By identifying fundamental issues in the production, dissemination, and reception of performance art in Greece, I provide a critical analysis not only of its achievements and potential but also of its impasses and failures. My intention in undertaking this research has been to disprove the notion - implied or stated as a matter of fact in histories of contemporary Greek art - that performance art has had only a sporadic and inconsistent presence in this 'periphery' scene. I argue that the artists investigated in this study are conclusively part of the history of performance in the 20th and 21th centuries, thereby setting the terms and calling for further research on the subject.

Space, Power, Policy, and the Creation of the “Illegal” Migrant at the United States Boundary with Mexico

Biesman-Simons, Catalina J 01 January 2019 (has links)
This thesis discusses the relationship between space (physical and figurative) and sovereign power, with respect to the history of the United States' immigration and boundary policy. It examines spatial organization as a social product, and simultaneously a producer of mainstream associations of illegal activity at the border with Mexico. It begins with a brief introduction to a spatially informed analytical framework, a history of relevant United States' immigration policy. The paper then uses newspaper coverage from the 1970s and 1980s to examine the local and national rise of xenophobia in the United States, and the normalization of boundary control and associated illegality. The socio-spatial evaluation of federal policy and public sentiment culminates with a discussion of the border policies developed by the United States Border Patrol in the early 1990s. The strategy introduced focused on preventing immigration by deterring migrants from the attempt. This plan was necessarily spatial in nature as it sought to displace migrants from ideal crossing spaces to sites vulnerable to capture by the Border Patrol. Ultimately, the history of the United States boundary with Mexico demonstrates the power of controlling a territory, and controlling a social narrative.

Mapping the dynamics of social enterprise and ICTs in Cambodia: a study of perception, use and benefit of ICT in development of the social enterprise space

Hutchinson, Kelly Anne, kellyhutchinson@gmail.com January 2007 (has links)
As Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and social enterprises become drivers of economic growth, the nexus provides opportunities for new models of business to bring benefits to communities in developing countries. Recognising the complex dynamics and range of actors in this diverse and emerging sector, this study chooses to document the external influences, use and impact of ICT on social enterprises. The problem investigated is the potential gap between the rhetoric of the 'promise of e-business' versus the dynamics of enactment and impacts of ICT in practice in the social enterprise sector. The methodology consists of a mixed-method data collection strategy to triangulate data sources from a diverse cross-section of organisations in the social enterprise sector in Cambodia. These include a cross-sectional survey, interviews, observations, document analysis and review of artefacts. It is unclear whether the Cambodian social enterprise sector represents a unique case or is representative of other countries. Regardless, the rich dynamics of the sector and the current lack of understanding of ICT use by this sector in developing countries per se warrant such a study. It fills a significant gap in the field of ICT and development by providing an in-depth overview of the social enterprise sector in one developing country, which may also be applicable in other developing country contexts. The research maps the e-business status of Cambodian social enterprises along a continuum from precursor activity to fully integrated e-services. It finds that Cambodian social enterprises believe ICT adds value to their operation; however access to affordable and reliable local ICT resources is an important factor determining long-term uptake. It also shows that external support is seen as vital to the success of ICT uptake by social enterprises in Cambodia. Donors have the most significant influence on social enterprises' framing of ICT, whilst NGOs, associations and the private sector are also important institutional players in shaping understanding and uptake of ICT. The main contribution of the research is to identify the real development impact of ICT use by social enterprises by measuring the role of ICTs in achieving their goals. Its major finding is that social and business missions are inextricably linked within these organisations, so to measure one in isolation of the other denies the new paradigm that social enterprises present. The most active sub-sector explored that best reflects this unique value proposition is the emerging social outsourcing potential of the IT services sub-sector. The handicraft and processing sub-sectors have yet to fully engage and use ICT to their maximum benefit. The outlook for these sub-sectors is likely to require further support to best harness the potential that ICT can bring developing countries.

Eco-labels: input or outcome of CSR? : A study made on three companies / Miljömärkningar: bidrag till eller resultat av företagens samhällsansvar? : En studie gjord på tre företag

Jonsson, Carolina, Jakobsson, Madeleine, Johansson, Martin January 2008 (has links)
Problem: The increased environmental awareness among people as well as businesses has led to the development of new concepts such as sustainable development and environ-mental marketing. One way of practising environmental marketing, which is based on the three principles social responsibility, holism and sustainability, is to use eco-labels on prod-ucts and services. Many companies see the usage of eco-labels as a means to gain competi-tive advantage. The number of eco-labelled products and services constantly increases, but does it mean that the number of companies practising corporate social responsibility also increases? The thesis strives to find out how a company through the usage of eco-labels contributes to a sustainable society by practising environmental marketing and thus social responsibility. The more specific purpose of this thesis is to: Explore the relationship between the usage of eco-labels on products and services and the implementation of corporate social responsibility (CSR) within three different companies. Method: A qualitative research approach was applied. Data was collected through six semi-structured interviews with the responsible of environmental/sustainability questions of three different companies (Scandic, Arla Foods and JC) and with the representatives within information/PR from two third party organisations (the Nordic Swan and KRAV). Results: We have drawn the conclusion that in order to have CSR incorporated within the organisation of the company, there is a need to have a balance between the different di-mensions (economic, environmental and social) of the company. The company also needs to take responsibilities that go beyond economic, legal, and ethical responsibilities. Scandic and Arla Foods have CSR fully incorporated within their organisations. JC have an imbal-ance between the different dimensions and have therefore not fully incorporated CSR. When it comes to the relationship between the eco-label and CSR, we can conclude that for the explored companies the relationship is dependent on the environmental philosophy and the environmental culture of the company having the eco-label. Scandic and Arla Foods have strong environmental cultures and their eco-labellings are seen as being the output of their CSR. JC do not have such a strong environmental culture and their eco-labelling is seen as the input of CSR. Third party organisations play an important role for CSR within the explored companies, both for the development and for the continuous im-provements of CSR. Third party organisations emphasise the development of CSR when the eco-label is seen as being the input of CSR, as in the case of JC. When the eco-label is seen as the outcome, as for Scandic and Arla Foods, the third party organisations help the companies to make continuous improvements.

On the Design of Socially-Aware Distributed Systems

Kourtellis, Nicolas 01 January 2012 (has links)
Social media services and applications enable billions of users to share an unprecedented amount of social information, which is further augmented by location and collocation information from mobile phones, and can be aggregated to provide an accurate digital representation of the social world. This dissertation argues that extracted social knowledge from this wealth of information can be embedded in the design of novel distributed, socially-aware applications and services, consequently improving system response time, availability and resilience to attacks, and reducing system overhead. To support this thesis, two research avenues are explored. First, this dissertation presents Prometheus, a socially-aware peer-to-peer service that collects social information from multiple sources, maintains it in a decentralized fashion on user-contributed nodes, and exposes it to applications through an interface that implements non-trivial social inferences. The system's socially-aware design leads to multiple system improvements: 1) it increases service availability by allowing users to manage their social information via socially-trusted peers, 2) it improves social inference performance and reduces message overhead by exploiting naturally-formed social groups, and 3) it reduces the opportunity of attackers to influence application requests. These performance improvements are assessed via simulations and a prototype deployment on a local cluster and on a worldwide testbed (PlanetLab) under emulated application workloads. Second, this dissertation defines the projection graph, the result of decentralizing a social graph onto a peer-to-peer system such as Prometheus, and studies the system's network properties and how they can be used to design more efficient socially-aware distributed applications and services. In particular: 1) it analytically formulates the relation between centrality metrics such as degree centrality, node betweenness centrality, and edge betweenness centrality in the social graph and in the emerging projection graph, 2) it experimentally demonstrates on real networks that for small groups of users mapped on peers, there is high association of social and projection graph properties, 3) it shows how these properties of the (dynamic) projection graph can be accurately inferred from the properties of the (slower changing) social graph, and 4) it demonstrates with two search application scenarios the usability of the projection graph in designing social search applications and unstructured P2P overlays. These research results lead to the formulation of lessons applicable to the design of socially-aware applications and distributed systems for improved application performance such as social search, data dissemination, data placement and caching, as well as for reduced system communication overhead and increased system resilience to attacks.

A Phenomenological Study of Teaching Endangered Languages Online: Perspectives from Nahua and Mayan Educators.

De Felice, Dustin 01 January 2012 (has links)
Language and culture teaching has always been a complex and challenging task. For many educators, their teaching experiences are rooted in their earlier preparation, their classroom situations and their curriculum. In this study, indigenous educators recount their lived experiences with teaching their language and culture at a distance. These educators belong to either Nahua or Mayan speech communities where endangered languages are maintained. Using a transcendental phenomenological approach, my participants described and explained their perspectives and experiences with teaching, studying, and integrating technology. I focused the interviews, the reflective writing tasks and their artifact sharing on their experiences in an online environment for a predominantly US audience through distance learning platforms. In the case of the Nahuas, they taught synchronously through Skype while the Mayans taught asynchronously through a socially mediated network (i.e. a Ning powered network). The resulting phenomenological essences provided a universal description of their textural and structural experiences and I used this essence to unearth these educators' descriptions, discoveries and perspectives on teaching, languages, culture and technology. From analyzing their journey the following implications emerged. First, these educators needed to learn an additional language beyond their home language in order to be a part of a teaching experience. Second, their personal ties to their speech communities were enhanced or completely changed due to their engagement with their home institutions. Lastly, their efforts were linked to increasing the documentation and revitalization of their endangered languages.
