Glottal Fry in College Aged Females: An Entrainment Phenomenon?

January 2015 (has links)
abstract: Glottal fry is a vocal register characterized by low frequency and increased signal perturbation, and is perceptually identified by its popping, creaky quality. Recently, the use of the glottal fry vocal register has received growing awareness and attention in popular culture and media in the United States. The creaky quality that was originally associated with vocal pathologies is indeed becoming “trendy,” particularly among young women across the United States. But while existing studies have defined, quantified, and attempted to explain the use of glottal fry in conversational speech, there is currently no explanation for the increasing prevalence of the use of glottal fry amongst American women. This thesis, however, proposes that conversational entrainment—a communication phenomenon which describes the propensity to modify one’s behavior to align more closely with one’s communication partner—may provide a theoretical framework to explain the growing trend in the use of glottal fry amongst college-aged women in the United States. Female participants (n = 30) between the ages of 18 and 29 years (M = 20.6, SD = 2.95) had conversations with two conversation partners, one who used quantifiably more glottal fry than the other. The study utilized perceptual and quantifiable acoustic information to address the following key question: Does the amount of habitual glottal fry in a conversational partner influence one’s use of glottal fry in their own speech? Results yielded the following two findings: (1) according to perceptual annotations, the participants used a greater amount of glottal fry when speaking with the Fry conversation partner than with the Non Fry partner, (2) statistically significant differences were found in the acoustics of the participants’ vocal qualities based on conversation partner. While the current study demonstrates that young women are indeed speaking in glottal fry in everyday conversations, and that its use can be attributed in part to conversational entrainment, we still lack a clear explanation of the deeper motivations for women to speak in a lower vocal register. The current study opens avenues for continued analysis of the sociolinguistic functions of the glottal fry register. / Dissertation/Thesis / Masters Thesis Speech and Hearing Science 2015

Language and Literacy Practices of Kurdish Children Across their Home and School Spaces in Turkey: An Ethnography of Language Policy

January 2015 (has links)
abstract: ABSTRACT This study examines the language and literacy experiences of Kurdish minority children during their first year of mainstream schooling in a southeastern village in Turkey. I employed ethnographic research methods (participant observation, multi-modal data collection, interviewing, and focus groups) to investigate the language practices of the children in relation to language ideologies circulating in the wider context. I focused on the perspectives and practices of one 1st grade classroom (14 students) but also talked with seven parents, three teachers, and two administrators. A careful analysis of the data collected shows that there is a hierarchy among languages used in the community—Turkish, English, and Kurdish. The children, their parents, and their teachers all valued Turkish and English more than Kurdish. While explaining some of their reasons for this view, they discussed the status and functions of each language in society with an emphasis on their functions. My analysis also shows that, although participants devalue the Kurdish language, they still value Kurdish as a tie to their ethnic roots. Another key finding of this study is that policies that appear in teachers’ practices and the school environment seemed to be robust mediators of the language beliefs and practices of the Kurds who participated in my study. School is believed to provide opportunities for learning languages in ways that facilitate greater participation in society and increased access to prestigious jobs for Kurdish children who do not want to live in the village long-term. Related to that, one finding demonstrates that current circumstances make language choice like a life choice for Kurdish children. While Kurds who choose Turkish are often successful in school (and therefore have access to better jobs), the ones who maintain their Kurdish usually have only animal breeding or farming as employment options. I also found that although the Kurdish children that I observed subscribed to ideologies that valued Turkish and English over their native language, they did not entirely abandon their Kurdish language. Instead, they were involved in Turkish- Kurdish bilingual practices such as language broking, language sharing, and language crossing. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation Curriculum and Instruction 2015

This dissertation aims to identify the linguistic and extralinguistic contexts that allow the occurrence of the monotongation of the descending oral diphthongs in the speech of residents of the city of Uberaba - MG. Monotongation is the process of reducing the diphthong that loses its semivowel and changes into a simple vowel, as in "c[ay] xa" > "c [a] xa" (HORA; RIBEIRO, 2006). Thus, knowing that the Portuguese language has had variations and changes as it is used by its speakers, it is necessary to carry out a research in the area of Linguistic Variation with a scientific approach onto the theme of this work. Thereon, we organized a corpus of spoken language through interviews with the representative urban community of Uberaba - MG, which was based on the Labovian model. Twenty-four (24) informants of different schooling and sex were interviewed. After this step, the interviews were orthographically transcribed and, later, the occurrence of words with descending diphthongs and the monotongation of the descending diphthongs were selected, which, in turn, were also transcribed phonetically. The occurrences were quantitatively analyzed with the help of the GOLDVARB X statistical program according to linguistic and extralinguistic factors, taking into account the dependent variable: monotongation or not of the descending diphthongs. The results obtained showed that in the Uberabense speech there is a preference for the monotong form of the diphthongs /aj/, /ej/ and /ow/ and that such preference is mainly conditioned by linguistic factors such as the following phonological context, the extension of the word and the tone. In relation to factors considered extralinguistic, such as sex, age and schooling, with respect to the phenomenon of monotongation in the Portuguese of Uberaba, they have little or no influence on their achievement.

Based on the observation that the usage of the superlative in the Brazilian Portuguese , mainly the ones formed by the sufixes –érrimo(a) and –ésimo(a), could be associated to the speech of gay men, this research this research proposes to analyze the speech of gay informants through sociolinguistic interviews in order to verify if the usage of superlatives could be said to constitute in a real and/or indexing characteristic of a gay way to speak. In order to achieve our goal, we analyzed data collected from speech samples of 24 male informants self-identified as gay from the city of Ribeirão Preto – SP. Aiming to verify the frequency of usage of the superlative as well as the linguistic and extralinguistic factors that could be conditioned to this usage, we used the GOLDVARB X package. The results that we obtained were then confronted with the data from what we called ―control group‖, extracted from Iboruna database. Our results allowed us to verify that the frequency of usage of the superlative sufixes by gay men was not as high as suggested by the stereotype. However, when we compare the usage of the superlatives by gay men to the usage of the ones by the control group, we can notice a slight difference of usage that allows us to state that this may really be a characteristic of the speech of gay men. Our results also enable a debate on this usage involving matters of sociolinguistic stereotype and identity, by which we can verify that the speech of most of the gay men interviewed for this research is determined by identity and that the informants are able to adjust it depending on the situation of speech, seeking to move closer to or keep away from the gay speaking style.

This will be done through the investigation and analysis of the linguistic characteristics used by the children who live along rivers in the country side. It has been noticed in this very study the presence of the every day life, the environment, the cultural heritage and the external influences in the written production of the kids. We did not intend to evaluate their performance according to the use of prestige ranges, nor the formal aspects of the textual production. We were interested in looking over the signs of the social environment in the children’s texts, and we wanted to point out the possibility of suggesting the teaching public institutions some activities that could help a better development of reading, writing and interpretation skills. In order to base the reflexion and the analysis which have let us draw out the written language profile of those children, we have selected some theoretical aspects from three areas of knowledge: Sociolinguistics, School Psychology and Language Acquisition. The site for the collection of the data for the research was Antônio Vasconcelos Council School, which enrolls primary school children, and it is located on the banks of Teotônio Waterfall ( Madeira river ), in Teotônio Village, a rural area of Porto Velho/RO, where very traditional families and in quite poor conditions live. These people present a significant cultural and ethnic multiplicity, very distinguished linguistic ranges and a low socio-economic-cultural level. This research has developed a reflection on the language acquisition process and its use in this social environment, which is so singular in the matter of being a specific community, and so general or plural, as it seems like so many other... Doralzuelan: An emerging identity of the Venezuelan immigrant in southern Florida

January 2018 (has links)
abstract: The steady influx of Venezuelan immigrants to the United States has resulted in the creation of a close-knit community of these immigrants in the city of Doral, Florida, now nicknamed Doralzuela given the strong imprint Venezuelan have left in this city. This study aimed at gaining understanding on how the process of immigration and settlement in the context has affected Venezuelan immigrants’ identity, their perception and use of English and Spanish in daily interactions, and how, or if, their bonds with the home country has affected their incorporation to the host society. The study followed a qualitative design. Eight semi-structured interviews were conducted and analyzed following Riessman’s (2008) notion of dialogic narrative analysis. Six themes emerged from the data; (re)configuration of the self, the role of social networks, negotiating identity through language, issues of assimilation, transnational identity, and Doralzuela, the new Venezuela. These themes were discussed, and multiple and distinct views on each theme were identified. / Dissertation/Thesis / Masters Thesis English 2018

Spanish Address Forms in US Newspapers

January 2012 (has links)
abstract: Advertisements intend to persuade the reader to invest money or time in a product or service. Newspapers contain advertisements that are space-limited, thus necessitating a concise and convincing message that will influence readers. Nord (2008) analyzed conative function (Jakobson 1960) as a persuasive tool in a corpus of Spanish, English, and German advertising texts. A portion of Nord's study focused on sender attitude indicators directed at addressees as a key element of conative function, and analyzed address forms among several attitude indicators found in print advertisements. The current study analyzed 604 Spanish newspaper advertisements in Arizona and Florida, focusing on possible independent factors related to the probability of the occurrence of various address forms. These factors included: the type of product being advertized and its cost, the nature of the advertisement, the location of the advertisement in the newspaper (main section, sports, etc.), intended audience (including age and sex), geographic region of the newspaper, and each newspaper as compared to others. These variables were categorized and statistically analyzed using a quantitative design. The study provided results indicating a strong statistical relationship between the presence of address forms and product type, a moderate relationship with audience age, and a mild relationship with product cost. Various similarities and differences were also found when comparing the data geographically. / Dissertation/Thesis / M.A. Spanish 2012

Orthographic Loyalty in the Spanish of Northern Mexican Speakers

January 2012 (has links)
abstract: This study analyzes the Spanish of native speakers from Northern Mexico in order to ascertain the presence of the voiced labiodental fricative segment [v] when the sound is orthographically represented with the letter `v'. The study examines some of the internal and external factors that predict the labiodental fricative pronunciation of the letter `v'. This study is based on the theoretical framework of phonology as described by Piñeros (2009) and Hualde (2005). The study examined all instances in the data when a sound is written with the letter `v' to investigate if the sound is pronounced as the faithful voiced plosive bilabial allophone [b] of the phoneme /b/, the spirantized allophone [β], or the voiced labiodental fricative allophone [v]. Four speakers, a male and a female with an incomplete secondary education, and a male and a female with a graduate level education participated in the study. All participants were interviewed for one hour, read a word list, and read a paragraph provided by the researcher. The researcher coded the data using the phonetic analysis software Praat and all data were statistically analyzed using the multivariate software analysis program Goldvarb X in order to investigate the presence of the voiced labiodental fricative allophone [v] and predict what internal and external factors most influence its production. From this study it is obvious that the most influential factor favoring the realization of the labiodental fricative allophone [v] is orthography. When the phonetic segment was represented with the grapheme , the phonetic realization was more likely to be the labiodental fricative [v]. The level of education of the speaker and the formality of the stylistic setting were also determined to be influential factors. Speakers with a higher degree of education and stylistic settings with a higher degree of formality favored the realization of the labiodental fricative [v]. With regards to the internal factors, rather than external factors, a preceding phonological segment of a vowel or fricative dental [s] also favored the realization of the labiodental fricative [v]. / Dissertation/Thesis / M.A. Spanish 2012

Is 'respect' a Feeling or a Behaviour? : -a study of the connection between word meaning and age for native and non-native speakers of English

Kaczorowski, Anna January 2009 (has links)
The aim of this study was to investigate if there is a connection between language and social identity in the perception of word meaning among second language learners in the same way as for native speakers, and if the sociolinguistic variable age is significant. This was done with an investigation of two generations of Swedish learners' perception of the meaning of the words 'respect', 'integrity' and 'communication'. The investigation showed that age is important to a certain extent regarding interpreting words and their meaning, but that it is not as important if the speaker has English as their mother tongue or as their second language.
