Simulace protichybového zabezpečení v ADSL modemech / Simulation of ADSL error protection systems

Bernat, Zbyněk January 2009 (has links)
The main objective of this thesis was to create a model of forward error correction (FEC) system used in ADSL modem, which will be able to check its individual settings using the test methods specified in Recommendation G.996.1. The work is divided into two basic parts – theoretical and practical. The first part describes the basic functional characteristics of ADSL system, with attention being paid to aspects affecting the activity and setting of the error protection system. There are also discussed the theoretical basics of FEC coding techniques used in ADSL. The work also contains a description of the method for testing DSL system resistance against impulsive interference, which is specified in Recommendation G.996.1. The practical part of this thesis contains a description of the proposed model of the FEC system. The model was implemented in the programming environment Matlab Simulink. The proposed model includes the simulation of FEC coding process, DMT modulation and transmission channel with the impulse interference and the background noise. The proposed program is able to calculate parameters for setting FEC system from the specified data transfer rates and the requirement for interleaving. In addition, allows you to set the parameters of transmission line and sources of impulse interference and of the background noise. Under the set of input characteristics of the transmission is calculated bit allocation and the resulting parameters are given to a computational core of the model. In the application can be performed two types of test tasks. The first one is based on the Recommendation G.996.1 and makes it possible to determine probability of errored second. The second test task is for the measurement of resistance of the transmission system against impulsive interference. The results of the simulations are summarized in the conclusion of work.

Dynamique méso-sousmésoéchelle et marée interne dans le Pacifique tropical : implications pour l'altimétrie et la mer des Salomon / Meso-submescale dynamic and internal tide in the tropical Pacific : implications for altimetry and Solomon sea

Tchilibou, Michel Lionel 20 December 2018 (has links)
[...] / This thesis work contributes to our understanding of the fine scale oceanic signals in the tropics, that are the focus of attention for the future altimeter mission SWOT. These fine scales concern meso and submesoscale due to ocean dynamics (eddies, filaments) and internal waves such as the barocline or internal tide. Fines scales are important source of ocean mixing. Meso and submesoscale reflect turbulent dynamic associated with energy cascades giving rise to sea surface height or eddie kinetic wavenumber spectrum slope. The observed altimetric sea surface height spectral slope evaluated in the band 250-70 km are very flat in the tropics. They disagree with turbulence theories and with sea surface height spectral slope of the numerical model. This thesis aims to remove the ambiguity of this spectra flattening in the tropical Pacific (20°S-20°N) by quantifying energy levels and wavelengths related to mesoscale dynamics and internal waves. The importance of the internal tide in the tropics is then illustrated in a regional context in the Solomon Sea, where water mass mixing plays an important role in the connections between the subtropical region and the equatorial region. The first part of the thesis is based on a 3D spectral analysis (frequency, zonal and meridional wavelengths) of tropical dynamics from a 1/12° model. The equatorial region (10°N-10°S) is characterized by large zonal dynamics associated with equatorial waves and finer scale dynamics ( < 600 km) marked by preferentially meridional movements associated with tropical instabilities waves. In the non-equatorial regions (10°-20°NS) the finer scales are more isotropic and concentrated in the band 300-70 km, and are connected to the large zonal scales by an energy continuum reflecting the importance of the indirect cascade. The slopes of the modelled sea surface height wavenumber spectra over the meso/submesoscale band in the different tropical regions are curiously close to the QG/SQG theoretical spectra typical of mid latitudes, but the slopes disagree with those from altimetry observations. Including the high frequency internal waves in a 1/36° model forced by the barotropic tide shows that coherent (predictable) internal tide is the main contributor causing the flattening of the spectra in the tropics, and particularly the M2 first baroclinic mode. However, the contribution of the incoherent (non-predictable) tide dominates at scales below 70 km and still affects scales up to 200 km. [...]

The narrative war for the soul of the nation : A study about the 2020 presidential campaign, identity, and the linking between internal and external others

Norbäck, Sara January 2021 (has links)
This study explores how presidential candidates during the 2020 American election were tied to external others, taking the shape of China and Russia. The study argues that an identity perspective becomes fruitful for addressing the research problem, as it becomes a matter of who "we" as a nation are. In general, identity studies tend to focus on the external other, while this study aims to contribute with an understanding of how the internal and external other can be interconnected.  American exceptionalism - the notion that the US has a unique role to play on the world stage - is a prominent part of American political identity. Nonetheless, the concept of exceptionalism also implies that being an American is an act of choice and not exclusively a birthright, thus individuals and values can be labeled as "un-American". Drawing on and combining the theoretical insights from Michel Foucault, Ernesto Laclau, Chantal Mouffe, and Ty Solomon, politics in itself becomes a narrative war to fill nodal points with a hegemonic substance based on a wish for identity-fulfillment. The study finds that the other candidate is separated from the idea of what constitutes the US by reference to foreign and threatening powers. The other candidate is framed as unfit to be president, and since he does not correspond with the identity of the nation itself, he can not lead and personify the US. Thus, the other candidate is narratively constructed as unable to grant the wish for national identity fulfillment. The substance of the nodal points also does not exhibit a value in themselves but has to be contrasted against something or someone - in this case, an Other.

En drottning i många skepnader : Framställningen av drottningen av Saba i rollen som den "andre" / A queen in many guises : The depiction of the Queen of Sheba in the role as “the other”

Johannesson, Arvid January 2022 (has links)
The aim of this essay is to examine how the biblical Queen of Sheba has been depicted in a selection of artworks. The main focus is on how her otherness has been visualized, in relation to King Solomon in particular but also to the Western, European, christian and white self-image at large. The material that has been analyzed comprises the following artworks: Solomon and the Queen of Sheba by Nicholas of Verdun (1181), Procession of the Queen of Sheba; Meeting between the Queen of Sheba and King Solomon by Piero della Francesca (ca 1452-1466), The Visit of the Queen of Sheba to King Solomon by Lavinia Fontana (1599) and The Visit of the Queen of Sheba to King Solomon by Edward Poynter (1890). In examining the artworks Erwin Panofsky's three- step analysis model has been applied in combination with a theoretical framework consisting of postcolonial studies and critical white theories.  The results show that the Queen of Sheba has been depicted in a variety of ways. In the artwork by Nicholas of Verdun, the Queen is black, carrying the symbolic notion of sin; in Piero and Fontanas artworks she is depicted as white. In Piero's depiction, only small signals, such as clothes, marks her status as “the other”, in Fontanas case, her signs of otherness seem in contrast completely absent. Poynters artwork contains a spectacular display of exotic elements and the Queen has been given a sensual appearance in line with the image of the erotic Orient. One conclusion that the author reaches is that, as Edward Said has argued, in attempting to represent “the other” the Occident documents itself. This is also similar to how the dichotomy between black and white is constructed and how whiteness in relation to black individuals in these pictures gathers its strength and is, rather than being neutral, imbued with meaning.

The use of computer simulations on grade eleven learners' performance in plants biodiversity, Mankweng Circuit

Bodirwa, Kgashane Bethuel January 2020 (has links)
Thesis (M. Ed. (Science Education)) -- University of Limpopo, 2020 / Learners’ performance largely depends on the pedagogy used. This study explored the use of Computer Simulations (CS) to teach plants biodiversity to grade eleven learners Mankweng Circuit. A randomised Solomon Four-Group design was used. Sixty-six learners from two schools equipped with computers were randomly assigned to the Experimental Group (EG), and 66 learners from two other schools without computers were the Control Group (CG). A performance pre- and post-test was used to the EG taught using CS and to the CG taught using Chalk-and-Talk Method (CTM). Also, Focus Group Discussion Interviews (FGDI) were conducted with 12 learners: six from each of the EG and the CG to collect information regarding their attitudes towards the methods used to learn biodiversity. The quantitative data were analysed using a T-test and Analysis of Variance (ANOVA), while the qualitative data were analysed thematically. The results show that the learners in the EG performed better than those in the CG (T-test; p < 0.05), (ANOVA; p < 0.05). Hypothesis one which states that learners in the EG who were taught using CS will perform better than those in the CG taught using CTM is accepted. Also, hypothesis two, which states that learners’ performance in the pretest will not vary in the EG and the CG is accepted. Also, hypothesis three which states that there will be no statistically significant differences in achievements between boys and girls in the EG is established. Thus, the CS method is a useful tool to enhance learners’ performance. Keywords: Computer simulations, PCK, TPACK, Quasi-experiment, Solomon four group design, Learner’s performance

Improving Dependability of Space-Cloud Payload Processor by Storage System

Said, Hassan, Johansson, Stephanie Liza January 2023 (has links)
Due to the usage of complicated platforms and current high-performance space computing technology, onboard processing in small satellites is expanding. Space-cloud payload processors with Commercial Off-The-Shelf (COTS) components, that are required to be radiation-tolerant, are used to perform the onboard processing. In this thesis, the research will aim to increase the dependability of a generic space-cloud payload processor through its Solid State Drive (SSD) storage unit. To achieve this, a more dependable NAND-flash-based SSD Redundant Array of Independent Disc (RAID) storage system is designed and tested. The reliability of NAND-flash-based SSDs can suffer wear-outs due to increased Program/Erase (P/E) cycles, making them more prone to radiation effects. These radiation effects are considered non-destructive events in the form of bit errors (both single bit-flip and multiple bit-flips). Therefore, making the storage system more dependable involves increasing its reliability against non-destructive events and developing analytical models that account for the considered dynamic of the SSD RAID. The challenge that comes with achieving the aim of this thesis is twofold. First, to explore different RAID levels such that a combination of RAID levels can be incorporated into one SSD for better reliability than a RAID-1 setup. Hence, in this thesis, a RAID array of several SSDs is not considered. Furthermore, the combinations of RAID levels need to account for mixed-critical data. Second, to demonstrate, via simulation and analytical models, the impact on the reliability of the storage system. A comparison study is also undertaken due to the support that the Fourth Extended (Ext4) file system or Zettabyte File System (ZFS) may give to enhance the storage system, and since little research exists that compares the file systems in some feature categories. The solution is a RAID-5 + 6 storage system that is Error Detection And Correction (EDAC) protected by Hamming codes and Reed Solomon (RS) codes. Low-critical data is stored using RAID-5 whereas high-critical data is stored using RAID-6. The simulation of the storage system proves that low-critical stripes of data achieve single fault tolerance whereas high-critical stripes of data tolerate a maximum of 5-bit burst errors. In parallel, several Continuous Time Markov Chain (CTMC) models are analysed, which show that the proposed solution is indeed highly reliable. The comparison study is carried out in a systematic way, and the findings are established as substantial,i.e., ZFS provides greater storage system support. In summary, the results of creating the storage system and analysing it suggest that incorporating RAID-5 and RAID-6 offers better SSD RAID reliability than RAID-1.
