Exporters' information requirements : the role of competitive intelligence in the export promotion of extruders / Marié-Luce Kühn

Kühn, Marié-Luce January 2010 (has links)
Export-led growth is important for a number of reasons. At a macro-economic level, it can create profit, allowing a country to balance its finances and manage its debt. Export-led growth can also lead to higher productivity and job creation. At a micro-economic level, exports and export-led growth lead to higher competitiveness and business growth. From an exporter’s perspective, however, participation in the global economy and export to new foreign markets bring with them the challenge of acquiring the required knowledge of an unknown market. Relevant information gathered has to be subjected to analysis and interpretation before it can be applied to strategic business decisions regarding the company and its market. This study proposes that Competitive Intelligence (CI) be used as an instrument to determine the types of export information that exporters require, as it focuses on exporters’ information requirements and enhances their competitiveness. The increasingly competitive business environment places increasing demands on Trade Promotion Organisations (TPOs) to make better use of resources available in order to tailor products and services to the needs of exporters. TPOs are amongst the main sources of information and export assistance for exporters. Other export information sources include publications and a variety of human sources. The assistance of TPOs can take the form of various export-promotion instruments, such as market research, trade fairs and business introductions. TPOs face various challenges, including that of scarce resources. Therefore, such resources must be utilised optimally and in order to achieve efficiency, Realistic Export Opportunities (REOs) need to be prioritised. This study stresses the importance of export diversification and the export of manufactured goods. Export diversification brings its own challenges including the question of which products to promote for export. The application of a Decision Support Model developed by Cuyvers et al. (1995:173) for South Africa identified a number of REOs. Amongst these was the export of South Africanmanufactured extruders to Tunisia. Against the background of the importance of export growth, the types of information that exporters use and the sources of such information were determined by means of a survey of extruder manufacturers, TPOs and users of extruders. With the export potential of extruders to Tunisia as an REO as focus, a market study was conducted using the case study research method. Results of the survey indicate that the only type of information that extruder manufacturers as potential new exporters in South Africa seek on a continuous basis is competitor information, specifically pricing information. However, the findings indicate that this is not typically the type of information supplied by TPOs in South Africa. Furthermore there is no evidence that extruder manufacturers have processes in place to monitor markets and competitors, or to identify key types of information. Concerning the case study, it was found that there is indeed a potential market for extruders in Tunisia and that the industries in which extruders are typically used are significant and growing. It was however also found that there are high trade barriers and high market concentration. Therefore, in terms of an export-promotion strategy for TPOs, an offensive exportpromotion strategy is proposed. In terms of further research, this study points to a need for research of this nature to extend to the wider capital equipment industry. It is further recommended that market profiles of the markets that show the most potential for specific products produced and manufactured in South Africa as evident from the results of Rossouw, Steenkamp, Viviers and Cuyvers (2010) be compiled. / Thesis (Ph.D. (International Trade))--North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2010.

It results from a descriptive research intending to build a history that emphasizes the diversity of content and the conditions of conservation, preservation and social use of the newspaper library as an artifact of information. The methodology has a quantitative-qualitative approach and uses documentary research to prepare the documents for data collection. For data analysis two techniques were applied: the Documentary Analysis (AD) and Content Analysis (CA). The results presents that the newspaper library collection at NUT- SECA is a historical documentation, as well as one of the memory locations of the drought and of Brazil s northeastern semi-arid, especially in Rio Grande do Norte, and that, depending on use, may contribute to the production of specific knowledge, strengthening the scientific literature on the theme of drought and general research in the field of Social Sciences. The final considerations are expected to have contributed to the construction of new knowledge about the newspaper library at NUT-SECA, as well as we hope the wide socialization of its collection to be a support for historiographies regarding this issue and/or on issues surrounding the NUT -SECA and its newspaper library / Re(constituir) a memória da Hemeroteca do NUT-SECA, no período de 1980 a 2012, como subsídios para futuras historiografias, e também, contribuir para a divulgação das informações existente nas diversas coleções temáticas configura-se como o objetivo geral da pesquisa.

No. of bitstreams: 1 arquivototal.pdf: 4021623 bytes, checksum: 88358a309d43748bcf7bb4aa423419a0 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2015-02-26 / The flow of information in the newsroom of journalism companies poses challenges to professional journalists users of information, specifically in cases involving the news production. These methods comprise the steps of data collection; determination of fact; description of that information; and dissemination of information. In this set, we aimed to investigate the news production processes in journalistic units and their informativeness of conditions for construction of meaning. Therefore, we seek to specifically describe the information flows involving the construction of the news; identify the sources of information that subsidize the construction of the news in journalistic units and their reliability interfaces; check the political and social aspects that influence the organization and communication of news as significant structure; and examine the conditions of informativeness in production processes, communication and use of information in journalistic units. Its universe seven television stations holding public concession in the State of Paraíba: TV Correio (Record), TV Arapuã (TV Network), TV Tambaú (SBT), TV Cabo Branco (Globo), TV Clube (Band) TV Paraíba - (Globo) and TV Borborema (SBT). In the methodological procedures, we adopted the Collective Subject Discourse (CSD), proposed by Lefèvre and Lefèvre (2003), which reveals itself as an orderly and effective tool of communication, which is the basis of all social representations. The study presents a qualitative perspective, the approach deepens the investigation of the universe of meanings of human actions and relations, according to Minayo (1996), this approach is concerned with a level of reality that can not be quantified because it meets the nature of meanings, motives, aspirations, beliefs, values and attitudes, conditions indicated to choose the DSC method. During data collection, we used semi-structured oral interviews with text editors Mail Television System, affiliated to Rede Record in Paraíba and TV Club Band affiliate in Paraíba. The two companies have different aspects as culture, ideology and ratings. Although occupying different in that values the ideological currents, the condition of informativeness these journalistic units is similar on how to approach and editorial referrals. The results show that editorial control mechanisms cover political and economic forces, they regulate the flow of journalistic information. The reliability information is the result of this process, since it is shaped to suit individual interests and therefore the newspaper is diluted in the customary which reads the work ethic. Information sources that support data and journalistic facts become secondary, the spread of journalistic information once meets the reports and dictates of mercantile institutions, understood in this context as expressions of power from the design of Foucault (2012). These events indicate direct interference from political and economic forces in the construction of the meaning of information, so journalists are professionals under the umbrella of these organizations that, in turn, shape the daily events from their interests, compromising aspects of informativeness in production of news in journalistic units / O fluxo de informação nas redações das empresas de jornalismo impõe desafios aos profissionais jornalistas usuários da informação, especificamente, nos processos que envolvem a produção de notícia.

Braz, Sandrine Cristina de Figueirêdo 26 February 2014 (has links)
Made available in DSpace on 2015-04-16T15:23:36Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 1 arquivototal.pdf: 1005663 bytes, checksum: b2641119aa97d5e9307e198562bf42a6 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2014-02-26 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES / The last few years have been marked by the large amount of information produced, disseminated and consumed daily. The advent of the web and its technological evolution, in particular, resulted in the emergence of mechanisms aimed at social interaction through online networks, virtual communities and open spaces of interaction. These environments are dedicated to the production, exchange, and dissemination of information and intangible assets fully focused on the processes of collaborative production sharing. In this context, Wikipedia, the Free Encyclopedia, presents itself as one of the most accessed Internet addresses. Throughout its 12years of existence, the collaborative encyclopedia online operates in over 280 countries, being present in five 5 continents, namely Africa, America, Asia, Europe and Oceania. Its major advantage is the fact that it functions through interactions and collaborations done by its own users. However, due to its free nature, Wikipedia faces the daily challenge of the reliability of information. Thus, in the present research, we aimed to analyze the factors affecting the reliability of information produced and shared on Wikipedia, The Free Encyclopedia. To this end, we seek to specifically describe the structure of this encyclopedia, mapping its general and specific characteristics, to identify the elements found as constituting a policy of production and dissemination of information, to characterize the factors affecting the reliability of information produced, and to explain the guidelines that guide the collaborative production of content. Thus, we performed a qualitative research on a documentary base in a case study. The collection and analysis of data were performed on the basis of Content Analysis of Laurence Bardin (2010), through the combination of the techniques of Relations Analysis and Thematic analysis proposed by Minayo (1996). The results show that Wikipedia is composed of a set of features designed to ensure their most unique characteristics, such as the Five Pillars and Wikipedia is not. Moreover, it has policies and recommendations that support the content production. Wikipedia is concerned with content produced by its publishers, especially regarding to quality, with emphasis on the validity and reliability of information that constitute them. In this context, three aspects stand out. The first corresponds to the categories of Content Production, which constitute the most important notes to be known and adopted by its producers. The second aims to achieve reliability, it corresponds to the "positions of trust , enhancing both the quality of articles and entries produced by Wikipedians as the experience of members dedicated to improving articles and entries. The third refers to the "netiquette", which acts indirectly on reliability regards, informing the most appropriate behaviors so that internal personal conflicts do not reach the quality of the pages. The open and collaborative model of encyclopedia therefore brings to Wikipedia a constant concern with the production of reliable and credible content. Its specifics enable itself to add the elements of reliability of information from different informational sources. The biggest challenge is the constant search for new criteria to evaluate the quality of such content.

Nowadays, a massive data volume has been produced by a variety of data sources. The easy access to these data presents new opportunities. In this sense, choosing the most suitable data sources for a specific use has become a challenge. Several works in the literature use Information Quality as a mean of solving this problem, however, only few works employ a continuous strategy. In this work, we address the problem of performing assessment continuously, looking to dynamic data sources. We also propose the creation of a data source Quality Profile, which consists of a set of metadata about the data source’s quality and may be used to help the selection of data sources. To reflect the real quality values of a data source, we propose a continuous updating of the Quality Profile, according to the data source’s refresh rate. In order to evaluate our proposal, we carried out some experiments with meteorological data provided by institutions that monitor weather conditions of Recife. The experimental results have demonstrated that our strategy produces more satisfactory results than others, regarding the trade off between performance and accuracy.
