Contenu total en éléments traces de sols forestiers du Québec méridional

Les sols forestiers constituent un réservoir considérable d’éléments nutritifs disponibles pour soutenir la productivité forestière. Ces sols contiennent aussi une quantité, encore inconnue à ce jour, d’éléments traces biodisponibles provenant de sources anthropiques ou naturelles. Or, plusieurs de ces éléments recèlent un potentiel toxique pour les organismes vivants. Ainsi, la quantification de la concentration et du contenu total en éléments traces des sols forestiers s’avère nécessaire afin d’évaluer les impacts des perturbations sur la qualité des sols. Les objectifs de ce projet de recherche sont: 1) de mesurer le contenu total en éléments traces en phase solide (Ag, As, Ba, Cd, Ce, Co, Cr, Cu, Mn, Ni, Pb, Rb, Se, Sr, Tl, V, Y, Zn) des divers horizons de sols d’écosystèmes forestiers du Québec méridional; 2) d’établir des liens significatifs entre la fraction soluble dans l’eau des éléments traces et les propriétés des horizons de sols et; 3) d’évaluer le rôle de la proximité d’un centre urbain sur les contenus en éléments traces. Pour répondre à ces objectifs, quatre profils de sols situés dans la région de St-Hippolyte et deux situés dans la région de Montréal furent échantillonnés jusqu'à l'atteinte du matériel parental. Les résultats de ce projet de recherche ont révélé que le contenu total en éléments traces présents dans les profils de sols se retrouve en grande partie dans les fragments grossiers du sol. Il a été démontré que la teneur en carbone organique, les complexes organométalliques et les oxydes de fer et d’aluminium dictent la distribution en profil de la majorité des éléments traces étudiés. Finalement, il fut prouvé que la région de Montréal présente des niveaux de contamination en éléments traces (Ag, As, Ba, Cu, Mn, Pb, Rb, Se, Sr, Tl et Zn) supérieurs à ceux rencontrés dans les Laurentides. / Forest soils represent an important stock of nutrients available to sustain forest productivity. They also contain an amount, still unknown, of trace elements inherited from natural or anthropogical sources. Many of these trace elements can be toxic to living organisms. Thereby, quantification of the concentration and the total content of trace elements in forest soils is necessary to asses the impact of these elements on soil quality. The specific objectives of this research project are: 1) to measure the total content of trace elements in solid phase (Ag, As, Ba, Cd, Ce, Co, Cr, Cu, Mn, Ni, Pb, Rb, Se, Sr, Tl, V, Y, Zn) of various soil horizons in two forest ecosystems of southern Quebec, 2) to establish significant correlations between the bioavailable fraction (water-soluble) of trace elements and soil horizons properties and 3) to compare the trace element stock of two Canadian Shield’s forest soil with those of similar soils situated in the Montreal area. To achieve these goals four soil profiles situated in the pristine region of St-Hippolyte and two in the urban area of Montréal, were excavated down to the parent material. The results of this research have established that the trace element’s total stock is mainly concentrated in coarse fragments of the soil. Multivariate statistical analyses revealed significant links between organic carbon, organometallic complexes as well as Fe-Al oxides and the distribution of trace element in soil profiles. Finally, it was proved that Montreal’s soil contained more trace element (Ag, As, Ba, Cu, Mn, Pb, Rb, Se, Sr, Tl et Zn) than Canadian Shield’s soils.

Cinétique spatiale et temporelle de zones hybrides : unicité et diversité au sein du modèle Chondrostomes (Teleostei, Cyprinidés), : application pour la conservation d'espèces d'intérêt patrimonial.

Au sein de la famille des Cyprinidés (Téleostéens), Parachondrostoma toxostoma (le toxostome) et Chondrostoma nasus (le hotu) sont deux espèces (respectivement endémique et invasive) qui se rencontrent dans le sud de la France, formant deux zones hybrides distinctes : la zone de la Durance (un milieu fortement fragmenté) et la zone de l'Ardèche (un milieu non fragmenté). La présence de ces deux zones hybrides nous a donné l'opportunité de caractériser les parts respectives de la sélection exogène (l'environnement) et endogène (compatibilité génomique) permettant d'expliquer les patterns d'hybridation entre les deux espèces. Les travaux présentés dans le cadre de cette thèse illustrent parfaitement la complexité des phénomènes d'hybridation, chaque situation étant fortement dépendante du contexte d'étude et ce à l'échelle même de la station. Nous avons montré dans certaines stations que l'espèce endémique résiste à l'introgression de son génome par l'espèce invasive, dans d'autres cas nous avons des scénarios plus complexe d'admixture qui évoluent au cours du temps. Le potentiel évolutif engendré par les phénomènes d'hybridation est cependant indéniable et nous préconisons de prendre en compte ces processus d'hybridation dans les programmes de gestions et de conservation de la biodiversité. / In the Cyprinidae family (Teleostei), Parachondrostoma toxostoma (the sofie) and Chondrostoma nasus (the nase) are respectively endemic and invasive species which are found in sympatry in the south of France. They form two distinct hybrid zones: the Durance River (a highly fragmented environment) and the Ardèche basin (an unfragmented area). The existence of these two different zones allow us to characterize the respective contributions of exogenous selection (environmental factors) and endogenous selection (genomic compatibility) to explain hybridization patterns between the two species.This PhD thesis highlights the complexity of hybridization phenomena. Each situation is highly dependent of the study context. We showed the resistance of the genome of the endemic species to introgression by the genome of the invasive species in some stations. In other cases, we demonstrated more complex scenarios of admixture that evolve over time. The evolutionary potential generated by hybridization is undeniable, and we recommend to take the hybridization process into account in management programs and conservation of biodiversity.

A interação entre plantas e seus visitantes florais forma uma rede de interação complexa. Essa rede de interação possui propriedades emergentes que caracterizam a estrutura da rede. A composição, a riqueza e o papel das espécies nas redes de interação podem variar espaço-temporalmente e levar a alteração na estrutura das redes. A estrutura também pode variar de acordo com o grau de dependência entre os pares de espécies. É esperado que interações com elevado grau de dependência mútua variem menos no tempo e no espaço. A interação entre as plantas produtoras de óleo floral e as abelhas coletoras de óleo é de alta dependência mútua, já que as abelhas necessitam do óleo para alimentar as larvas e construir ninhos e são polinizadores mais importantes dessas plantas. O alimento larval destas abelhas é composto por pólen, óleo e néctar. A quantidade de alimento disponível para as larvas pode influenciar o tamanho dos adultos quando emergirem. As espécies de abelhas coletoras de óleo são solitárias, ou seja, não existe contato entre as gerações. Assim uma abelha recém-emergida deve ser capaz de encontrar as fontes de óleo, seguindo algum sinal de atração, que poderia ser através de odores voláteis. No presente trabalho analisamos se a estrutura da rede de interação formada pelas plantas produtoras de óleo floral e seus visitantes coletores de óleo varia espacialmente e temporalmente. Para a análise temporal coletamos dados da interação por dois anos em Itirapina, São Paulo. No estudo de variação espacial comparamos as redes de interação em cinco áreas de cerrado no interior de São Paulo. Em ambos os estudos usamos métricas de redes complexas. Além disso, estudamos a relação entre tamanho de célula de cria e quantidade de alimento disponível para as larvas e tamanho das abelhas adultas ao emergirem, para uma espécie de abelha coletora de óleo: Tetrapedia diversipes. Para isso medimos abelhas e suas células de cria e relacionamos estas medidas. Também manipulamos a quantidade de alimento disponível para as larvas e medimos os adultos emergidos. Por fim, procuramos odores voláteis em Byrsonima intermedia. Coletamos odores voláteis com a técnica de dynamic headspace. Analisamos as coletas com GCMS. A estrutura da rede de interação entre as plantas produtoras de óleo floral e as abelhas coletoras de óleo variou espaço-temporalmente. A análise temporal mostrou que o grau de especialização da rede foi fortemente alterado entre os anos de estudo e que a abundância foi um fator importante para explicar a ocorrência das interações. As espécies que tiveram suas abundâncias alteradas entre os anos também tiveram alteração no número de interações. Na análise espacial observamos que as interações e as espécies compartilhadas entre os locais de estudo foram aquelas com maior grau de interação (generalista). Além das interações e espécies generalistas se manterem nas cinco localidades, as espécies generalistas sustentam as espécies localmente raras. Byrsonima intermedia foi considerada uma espécie super-generalista nas cinco redes analisadas e 77% das interações compartilhadas envolveram esta espécie. A morfometria dos indivíduos de Tetrapedia diversipes estudados foi positivamente correlacionada com o volume da célula de cria e a quantidade de alimento. Quando relacionamos o volume das células de cria com as medidas corpóreas das abelhas verificamos que as abelhas maiores emergiram em células maiores. No entanto essa relação foi fraca. Após o experimento de manipulação de alimento verificamos que as abelhas emergidas de células sem manipulação foram maiores que as abelhas que tiveram o alimento retirado, e que entre as abelhas manipuladas aquelas que receberam mais alimento foram maiores. Nós não encontramos odores voláteis em flores de Byrsonima intermedia. / The plant pollinator interaction forms a complex network. These networks have emergent properties that characterize the structure of network. The number, identity and species role of the network may vary spatio-temporally and lead to changes in the structure of the networks. Moreover, the structure may vary according to the dependence degree of the interacting pairs. It is expected that interactions with a high mutual dependence degree are more stable. The interaction between oil producing plants and oil collecting bees is highly mutual dependence, since bees need oil to feed the larvae and are pollinators of these plants. The larval diet consists of pollen and oil/nectar. The amount of food available to the larvae may influence the adults size. The oil collecting bees are solitary, i.e., there is no contact between generations. Thus, a naive emerged bee should be able to find the oil plants, using some attractive cues that could be volatile odor. In this work we want to answer if the network structure of the interaction between oil producing plants and oil collecting bees varies spatially and temporally. For the temporal analysis we carried out field work for two years at Itirapina, São Paulo. In the study of spatial variation we compare interaction networks in five areas of cerrado. In both studies we use metrics of complex networks. Furthermore, we studied the relation between size of adult bees (Tetrapedia diversipes) and brood cell sizes and the amount of food available for the larvae. We measured the bees and their brood cells and relate it. Also we manipulated the amount of food available for the larvae and we took measures of the adults. Finally, we search for volatile odors in Byrsonima intermedia. We collect volatile odors with the technique of dynamic headspace. We analyzed the samples with GCMS. The network structure of interaction between oil producing plants and oil collecting bees varied spatio-temporally. The temporal analysis showed that the specialization degree of the network changed between the years and that the abundance has a key role to explain the occurrence of interactions. Species that had changed their abundances between years were also changed in the number of interactions. Spatial analysis found out that the interactions and species ubiquitous among the study sites were those that had the greatest interaction degree (generalist specie). Moreover, generalist species maintain the locally rare species. Byrsonima intermedia was regarded a super-generalist specie in the five networks analyzed and 77% of ubiquitous interactions involved this species. The morphometry of Tetrapedia diversipes individuals was positively correlated with the volume of the brood cells and the amount of food. When relating the volume of brood cells with measures of bees we found that larger bees emerged in larger cells. However this relationship was weak. The experiment of handling food showed that bees emerged from control cells were larger than bees that had the food removed, and between the manipulated bees those who received more food became bigger. We did not detect volatile odors in flowers Byrsonima intermedia.

An investigation into local air quality throughout two residential communities bisected by major highways in South Auckland, New Zealand.

Population exposure to traffic pollution is a rapidly developing, multi-disciplinary scientific field. While the link between long-term exposure and respiratory issues is well-established, there are probable links to a number of more serious health effects, which are still not fully understood. In the interests of protecting human health, it is prudent that we take a cautionary approach and actively seek to reduce exposure levels, especially in the home environment where people spend a significant portion of their time. In many large cities, a substantial number of homes are situated on land immediately adjacent to busy freeways and other heavily-trafficked roads. Characterising exposures of local residents is incredibly challenging but necessary for advancing epidemiological understandings. While existing studies are plentiful, the results are mixed and generally not transferable to other urban areas due to the localised nature of the built environment and meteorological influences. This thesis aimed to employ a variety of methods to develop a holistic understanding of the influence of traffic emissions on near-highway residents' exposure in two communities of South Auckland, New Zealand, where Annual Average Daily Traffic (AADT) is as high as 122,000 vehicles. First, ultrafine particles (UFPs), nitrogen oxides (NOx), carbon monoxide (CO) and particulate matter ≤ 10 μm (PM₁₀) were continuously monitored using a series of fixed stations at different distances from the highways, over several months during the winters of 2010 and 2011. Emissions modelling output (based on traffic composition), was used within a dispersion model to compare modelled concentrations with monitored levels. In addition, community census meshblock units were mapped by level of social deprivation in order to assess potential inequities in highway emissions exposure. The second layer of local air quality investigation involved using a bicycle platform to systematically measure concentrations of UFPs, CO and PM₁₀ using the entire street-grid network throughout each community. This was done forty times - five times at four times of day (07:00, 12:00, 17:00 and 22:00), for each study area, with the aim of mapping the diurnal fluctuation of microspatial variation in concentrations. Using global positioning system (GPS) data and geographical information system (GIS) software, spatially-resolved pollutant levels were pooled by time of day and the median values mapped, providing a visualisation of the spatial extent of the influence of emissions from the highways compared to minor roads. The third layer involved using data from multiple ambient monitors, both within the local areas and around the city, to simulate fifty-four residents' personal exposure for the month of June, 2010. This required collecting timeactivity information which was carried out by door-to-door surveying. The time-activity data were transformed into microenvironment and activity codes reflecting residents movements across a typical week, which were then run through the US-EPA's Air Pollution Exposure Model (APEX). APEX is a probabilistic population exposure model for which the user sets numerous microenvironmental parameters such as Air Exchange Rates (AERs) and infiltration factors, which are used in combination with air pollutant concentrations, meteorological, and geospatial data, to calculate individuals' exposures. Simulated exposure outputs were grouped by residents' occupations and their home addresses were artificially placed at varying distances from the highways. The effects of residential proximity to the highway, occupation, work destination and commute distance were explored using a Generalised Linear Model (GLM). Surveyed residents were also asked a series of Likert-type, ordered response questions relating to their perceptions and understandings of the potential impacts of living near a significant emissions source. Their response scores were explored as a function of proximity to the highway using multivariate linear regression. This formed the final layer of this investigation into air quality throughout these South Auckland communities of Otahuhu and Mangere Bridge. Results show that concentrations of primary traffic pollutants (UFPs, NOx, CO) are elevated by 41 - 64% within the roadside corridor compared to setback distances approximately 150 m away and that the spatial extent of UFPs can reach up to 650 m downwind early in the morning and late in the evening. Further, social deprivation mapping revealed that 100% of all census meshblocks within 150 m either side of both highways are at the extreme end of the deprivation index (NZDep levels 8 - 10). Simulations for residents dispersed across the community of Otahuhu estimated daily NOx and CO exposure would increase by 32 and 37% (p<0.001) if they lived immediately downwind of the highway. If they were to shift 100 m further downwind, daily exposure would decline by 56 - 70% (p<0.001). The difference in individuals' exposure levels by occupation varied across the same distance by a factor of eight (p<0.05), with unemployed or retired persons the most exposed due to having more free time to spend outdoors at home (recreation, gardening, etc.). Those working in ventilated offices were the least exposed, even though ambient concentrations - likely due to a strong urban street canyon effect - were higher than the nearest highway monitor (5 m downwind) by 25 - 30% for NOx and CO, respectively. Inverse linear relationships were identified for distance from highway and measures of concern for health impacts, as well as for noise (p<0.05). Positive linear relationships were identified for distance from highway and ratings of both outdoor and indoor air quality (p<0.05). Measures of level of income had no conclusive statistically significant effect on perceptions (p>0.05). The main findings within this thesis demonstrate that those living within the highway corridor are disproportionately exposed to elevated long-term average concentrations of toxic air pollutants which may impact on physical health. While the socioeconomic characteristics could also heighten susceptibility to potential health impacts in these areas, certain activity patterns can help mitigate exposure. This thesis has also shown that there may be quantifiable psychological benefits of a separation buffer of at least 100 m alongside major highways. These results enhance a very limited knowledge base on the impacts of near-roadway pollution in New Zealand. Furthermore, the results lend additional support to the international literature which is working to reduce residential exposures and population exposure disparities through better policies and improved environmental planning. Where possible, the placement of sensitive population groups within highway corridors, e.g. retirement homes, social housing complexes, schools and childcare centres, should be avoided.

Moreover, the structure may vary according to the dependence degree of the interacting pairs. It is expected that interactions with a high mutual dependence degree are more stable. The interaction between oil producing plants and oil collecting bees is highly mutual dependence, since bees need oil to feed the larvae and are pollinators of these plants. The larval diet consists of pollen and oil/nectar. The amount of food available to the larvae may influence the adults size. The oil collecting bees are solitary, i.e., there is no contact between generations. Thus, a naive emerged bee should be able to find the oil plants, using some attractive cues that could be volatile odor. In this work we want to answer if the network structure of the interaction between oil producing plants and oil collecting bees varies spatially and temporally. For the temporal analysis we carried out field work for two years at Itirapina, São Paulo. In the study of spatial variation we compare interaction networks in five areas of cerrado. In both studies we use metrics of complex networks. Furthermore, we studied the relation between size of adult bees (Tetrapedia diversipes) and brood cell sizes and the amount of food available for the larvae. We measured the bees and their brood cells and relate it. Also we manipulated the amount of food available for the larvae and we took measures of the adults. Finally, we search for volatile odors in Byrsonima intermedia. We collect volatile odors with the technique of dynamic headspace. We analyzed the samples with GCMS. The network structure of interaction between oil producing plants and oil collecting bees varied spatio-temporally. The temporal analysis showed that the specialization degree of the network changed between the years and that the abundance has a key role to explain the occurrence of interactions. Species that had changed their abundances between years were also changed in the number of interactions. Spatial analysis found out that the interactions and species ubiquitous among the study sites were those that had the greatest interaction degree (generalist specie). Moreover, generalist species maintain the locally rare species. Byrsonima intermedia was regarded a super-generalist specie in the five networks analyzed and 77% of ubiquitous interactions involved this species. The morphometry of Tetrapedia diversipes individuals was positively correlated with the volume of the brood cells and the amount of food. When relating the volume of brood cells with measures of bees we found that larger bees emerged in larger cells. However this relationship was weak. The experiment of handling food showed that bees emerged from control cells were larger than bees that had the food removed, and between the manipulated bees those who received more food became bigger. We did not detect volatile odors in flowers Byrsonima intermedia.

Taxonomic and functional organization of macroinvertebrate communities in subarctic streams

Abstract Ecological research based on both species and their traits help us to understand the main mechanisms and environmental factors structuring biological communities. In general, variation in community composition is thought to be a consequence of both stochastic and deterministic factors. In stream ecology, the traditional view has been that the local habitat conditions pose a strong environmental filter that selects only species with the right functional traits into the local communities. However, recent studies on streams have also suggested that the responses of species to environmental gradients may be independent of those of other species due to stochastic factors, such as species dispersal, which then result in more continuous communities along environmental gradients. The aim of this thesis was to explore the relative importance of the deterministic and stochastic factors in the structuring of taxonomic and functional trait-based macroinvertebrate communities in streams in a high-latitude catchment by comparing the variation in these community facets along environmental and spatial gradients. Also, the relationship between environment and the functionally-defined communities was explored closely. The results indicated how the taxonomic composition of the communities may be more closely related to the stochastic and dispersal-related factors, whereas the functional composition of the communities may be more closely related to the deterministic environmental filtering processes. However, the overall structure of the communities seems to be strongly controlled by the variation in environment, although the heterogeneous and harsh conditions of the streams may preclude the formation of predictable community types. Nonetheless, some noticeable responses of different traits to different environmental factors were found, suggesting that definable functional trait-environment relationships may be discovered if key traits of the species can be identified. Overall, these findings underline the benefits of describing both taxonomic and functional-based communities when exploring the mechanisms behind the structuring of macroinvertebrate communities. The results also have applications for conservation practices. Conservation efforts should focus on varying environmental conditions in order to cover all aspects of macroinvertebrate community variation. / Tiivistelmä Lajeihin ja lajien toiminnallisiin lajiominaisuuksiin pohjautuva ekologinen tutkimus tuo uutta tietoa biologisten yhteisöjen taustalla vaikuttavista tekijöistä. Yleisesti yhteisöjen rakentumiseen vaikuttavat niin deterministiset kuin stokastiset ympäristössä vaikuttavat tekijät. Virtavesiyhteisöjen on perinteisesti ajateltu rakentuneen niin sanottujen ympäristösuodattimien mukaisesti, jolloin ympäristön vaihtelu suodattaa tietynlaisiin ympäristöihin vain lajit, joilla on tarvittavat ominaisuudet paikalla selviytyäkseen. Useat viimeaikaiset tutkimukset ovat kuitenkin osoittaneet virtavesiyhteisöissä elävien lajien esiintymisen vaihtelevan ympäristössä myös itsenäisesti erilaisista stokastisista, kuten lajien dispersaaliin vaikuttavista, tekijöistä johtuen. Tässä väitöstutkimuksessa tutkin näiden determinististen ja stokastisten ympäristötekijöiden suhteellisia vaikutuksia taksonomisesti ja toiminnallisesti luokiteltujen pohjaeläinyhteisöjen rakentumiseen pohjoisissa virtavesissä. Myös yksittäisten lajiominaisuuksien ja toiminnallisten yhteisöjen suhde pohjoisten virtavesien ympäristöolosuhteisiin oli tarkastelun alla. Tutkimuksen tulokset antoivat viitteitä siitä, että ympäristössä toimivat stokastiset ja lajien dispersaaliin liittyvät tekijät vaikuttaisivat voimakkaammin taksonomisesti luokiteltujen yhteisöjen vaihteluun, kun taas toiminnallisesti luokitellut yhteisöt vaikuttaisivat rakentuneen enemmän determinististen ympäristöprosessien mukaisesti. Kokonaisuudessaan yhteisöt vaikuttaisivat kuitenkin rakentuneen voimakkaasti vaihtelevien ympäristöolosuhteiden ohjaamana, ja tämä vaihtelu voi estää selkeästi ennustettavien yhteisörakenteiden synnyn. Muutamia selkeitä lajiominaisuusvasteita kuitenkin löytyi, mikä antaa viitteitä ennustettavissa olevien toiminnallisten yhteisöjen olemassaolosta, mikäli yhteisöjen menestymisen kannalta merkittävimmät lajiominaisuudet vain osataan määrittää. Nämä tulokset osoittavat, miten sekä taksonomisesti että toiminnallisesti luokiteltujen yhteisöjen käyttäminen rinnakkain yhteisöekologisissa tutkimuksissa voi auttaa selventämään yhteisöjen synnyn taustalla vaikuttavia tekijöitä. Tuloksilla on merkitystä myös virtavesiyhteisöjen suojelun kannalta. Suojelutoimenpiteet tulisi kohdistaa kattamaan ympäristöolosuhteita laajasti, jotta ympäristöolosuhteiden mukaan vaihtelevat yhteisöt tulisivat parhaalla mahdollisella tavalla katetuiksi.

Spatial variation of cyanobacteria in the Gulf of Bothnia

As cyanobacteria can be found in a wide variety of environments and can cause great damage to ecosystems, human health, and economy, it is important to monitor and understand their behaviour. In this case, the study aims to understand the spatial variations of cyanobacteria communities in the Gulf of Bothnia, by analysing environmental factors that affect them. I hypothesize that the variations from north to south and coast to offshore of nutrients such as phosphorus and nitrogen promote the occurrence of different cyanobacteria orders, i.e. Chroococcales, Oscillatoriales, and Nostocales. The methods used were 16S amplicon DNA sequencing and the traditional microscopy method. Both showed similar results: Nostocales seem to predominate south-offshore zones and Oscillatoriales coast-north stations. Nevertheless, contrary to what was hypothesized on the beginning, Chroococcales were widely distributed between the stations. Both analysis methods used have limitations and strengths, thus, they should complement each other. Moreover, the DNA method must be implemented in cyanobacterial monitoring for the Baltic Sea. On the other hand, it can be said that environmental variables such as nutrients, jointly with other parameters, such as salinity, pH, humic substances and DOC (dissolved organic carbon), influence cyanobacteria communities’ composition. Overall, the environmental factors in the Baltic Sea give cyanobacteria the perfect conditions for living and develop. Therefore, it is important to implement water management and monitoring plans, as temperatures are predicted to rise globally with climate change, thus, cyanobacterial blooms are also predicted to be more common.

Les Sicydiinae amphidromes constituent une part importante des peuplements piscicoles insulaires de la région Indo-Pacifique et sont vulnérables à de nombreuses pressions anthropiques (i.e. pêcherie, dégradation et fragmentation des habitats). La reproduction a lieu en eau douce, puis les jeunes dévalent en mer où ils débutent leur croissance pendant quelques mois avant de coloniser les rivières. L’objectif est d’acquérir des connaissances sur les traits de vie de S. lagocephalus (cosmopolite) et de C. acutipinnis (endémique). Les travaux de terrain démontrent que le choix de l’habitat quotidien est fortement lié aux interactions sociales, alors que l’habitat de fraie montre une forte sélection pour des conditions morphodynamiques favorisant l’oxygénation des oeufs. Les mâles sélectionnent des sites de ponte et gardent les oeufs. L’étude expérimentale de la survie en eau douce confirme que tous les embryons libres possèdent la capacité à rejoindre la mer. L’analyse des traits de vie marins à partir des otolithes des post-larves révèle des variations saisonnières d’âge et de taille au recrutement, en lien avec la croissance et la température marine. L’examen histologique des ovaires permet de décrire les variations spatiales et temporelles de l’activité de reproduction chez les femelles en rivière et de déterminer la fécondité et la taille de première reproduction. Les variations inter et intra-spécifiques des traits de vie sontcomparées en lien avec la répartition géographique des deux espèces. Ces travaux permettent d’identifier des perspectives concrètes dans le domaine de la gestion et de la conservation sur la base des caractéristiques de la stratégie amphidrome. / Amphidromous Sicydiinae are particularly widespread among fish freshwater assemblages of the Indo-Pacific region and are vulnerable to anthropogenic pressures (i.e. fishery, degradation and fragmentation of habitats). Spawning and hatching happen in freshwater, then offspring drift downstream to the sea where they begin their growth for a few months before recruiting in the rivers. This study aims at acquire knowledge about life traits of S. lagocephalus (cosmopolite) and C. acutipinnis (endemic). Field sampling shows that the usual habitat choice is related to social interactions, whereasspawning habitat shows a strong selection for morphodynamic conditions which favor eggs oxygenation. Males select spawning sites and care for the eggs. The experimental study of freshwater survival confirms that free embryos survival and swimming capacities are enough to drift to the ocean. Marine life history analysis, based on postlarvae otoliths examination, reveals a seasonal variation of both age and size-atrecruitment related to the larval growth rate and the sea temperature. Histological examination of ovaries is used to describe the spatial and temporal variation of reproductive activity of mature females in the rivers, and to determine fecundity and size at first reproduction. Inter and intra-specific variations of life history traits are compared in relation to the respective geographical distribution of both species. This study identifies concrete prospects for management and conservation based on the features of amphidromous life history strategy.
