Analyse du discours économique et commercial et son application à la didactique de la langue française dans le contexte socio-économique de la Serbie / Analysis of the economic and business discourse and its use to the didactics of French language in socioeconomic context of Serbia

Dans cette thèse, nous présentons un modèle d’analyse du discours économique et commercial à différents niveaux : énonciatif, lexical, syntaxique, sémantique, pragmatique et sociolinguistique. L’analyse détaillée du corpus spécialisé dans le domaine de l’économie peut grandement contribuer à la définition des caractéristiques spécifiques du discours économique et commercial. En fonction des résultats nous proposons des moyens pour l’application des résultats d’analyse à la didactique de la langue française en proposant les tâches à effectuer dans une perspective actionnelle. Notre hypothèse part du principe qu’en améliorant et en modernisant les méthodes d’apprentissage/enseignement de la langue française, nous répondrons aux demandes et aux besoins langagiers contemporains des apprenants, des entreprises et des institutions en Serbie. L’apprentissage des langues étrangères représente une des grandes priorités pour l’Union européenne dans le cadre de la stratégie Europe 2020. Chaque entreprise, qui veut être plus efficace, plus performante et plus compétitive sur le marché mondial, a besoin d’un personnel parlant la langue du client ou du partenaire d’affaires. Par conséquent, cela nécessite l’adaptation de l’enseignement de la langue française ou plus précisément le français sur objectif spécifique (FOS) ou le français de spécialité (FS) aux conditions socio-économiques actuelles en Serbie. À cet effet, nous consacrons une attention particulière au rôle de la langue dans le travail, à la description des enjeux de la communication professionnelle et aux relations économiques entre la Serbie et la France ainsi qu’avec le monde francophone. / In this paper, we present the analytical model of economic and commercial speech on different levels: expository, lexical, syntactic, semantic, pragmatic, and sociolinguistic. Detailed analysis specified in the area of economics can greatly contribute to defining the particularities of economic and commercial speech. According to the results, we offer some ways for involvement of the analyzed results to the teaching of the French language, suggesting various tasks, which would be done in action-oriented perspective.Our hypothesis represents the idea that while enriching and modernizing current methods of learning French language, we actually respond to requests and needs of a contemporary language to ones who learn it, to enterprises, and institutions in Serbia. Learning foreign languages presents one of the biggest priorities for European Union in means of their strategy called EU 2020. Every enterprise which has a goal to become more efficient, more successful, and more competitive on the world’s market, needs a person who speaks the language of a customer, or a business partner. According to that, it demands the adjustment of learning French language, and more precisely said, French language for specific purposes, or French language for personal communication under current socio-economic conditions in Serbia. In that purpose, we pay special attention to the role of language in work, in describing parts in professional communication and economic relations between Serbia and France, as well as the relations between Francophone countries.

The Structure of Philosophical Discourse

<p>   </p> <p>Motivated by the lack of research that has explored the rhetorical structure of research articles in the humanities, this dissertation analyzes professional philosophical discourse using move-analysis as an approach. A corpus of 60 research articles was compiled from some of the leading philosophy journals. The articles were selected from three sub-disciplinary areas: (a) metaphysics and epistemology, (b) the history of philosophy, and (c) ethics. To analyze the articles, a move analysis codebook was developed, which identified the rhetorical functions (i.e., moves and steps) that different text segments played. The codebook was then applied to the entire research article structure of the 60 research articles. Linguistic features of certain functional units were also identified via corpus analysis techniques. The results of the study show that rhetorical structure of philosophical writing is distinctive compared to other fields and disciplines. On one hand, at the macro level, philosophical writing uses a problem-solution structure rather than the IMRD (intro-methods-results-discussion) structure, common in the social and natural sciences. At the move and step level, philosophical writing heavily relies on evaluation to critically analyze solutions to philosophical problems. Finally, the dissertation found systemic rhetorical functions that permeated the entire research article. Most notably, philosophers heavily qualify and outline their arguments throughout the text. </p> <p>  </p>

Improving the academic literacy levels of first-year Natural Sciences students by means of an academic literacy intervention

Over the past years, there has been a consistent call from Government and industry for South African tertiary institutions to deliver more graduates in the fields of science and technology. This, however, is no mean feat for universities, as the pool of prospective candidates delivers very few students with the necessary academic literacy abilities, and very few students who passed mathematics and science at the right levels to succeed in science higher education. This puts tertiary institutions under mounting pressure to accept students who are under-prepared and to support these students appropriately. The plight of Open and Distance Learning (ODL) institutions like the University of South Africa (UNISA) is even more desperate, as they are often left with those students who are either unable to gain entrance into, or to afford the study fees of, residential universities. These students are often in greater need for face-to-face interaction than are their counterparts at residential universities, yet they generally receive very little of this. The intervention examined and critiqued in this study is an attempt at raising the academic literacy levels of first-year students at UNISA in the fields of science and technology by means of a 60-hour face-to-face workshop programme. As its foundation, it uses the principles of collaborative learning and authentic material design. It also treats academic literacy abilities as interdependent and holistic. This study starts with a broad overview of the context. This is followed by a review of the literature. This review focuses on concepts such as collaborative learning, academic literacy, English for academic purposes, English for specific purposes and English for science and technology. Thereafter, a needs analysis is done in which students’ Test for Academic Literacy Levels (TALL) pre-test results, as well as a sample of their assignments, are examined. In addition, the workshops in this intervention programme are analysed individually. To determine the effectiveness of the academic literacy intervention, students’ pre- and post-TALL results are scrutinised, and a feedback questionnaire filled in at the end of the year is analysed. Subsequently, recommendations are made as to how the workshop programme could be improved. Findings show that the academic literacy intervention did improve students’ academic literacy levels significantly, though the improvement is not enough to elevate students from being considered at-risk. However, with fine-tuning the existing programme, the possibility exists that students’ academic literacy levels might be further improved. This calls for a careful examination of the areas in which students’ performance did not improve significantly. Student feedback indicated a positive attitude towards the entire intervention programme, as well as a marked preference for collaborative learning and face-to-face interaction. In the redevelopment of the current workshop programme, such preferences would have to receive attention, so as to integrate students’ wants, together with what they lack and what they need, in subsequent interventions. In conclusion, the limitations of this study are discussed, and recommendations are made for future research, as the current study must be seen as only the beginning of a process of action research that could lead to a sustainable intervention programme in future. An English for Specific Purposes Curriculum to Prepare English Learners to Become Nursing Assistants

This project details the designing and implementation of an English for Specific Purposes (ESP) Curriculum to prepare English learners to become Certified Nursing Assistants (CNA) at Utah Valley Regional Medical Center (UVRMC) in Provo, Utah. UVRMC, which is owned by Intermountain Health Care (IHC), employs a group of about 40 non-native speakers of English. They work as housekeepers and have interest in learning English and consequently acquiring new skills they could use in better jobs to improve the quality of their lives. UVRMC would like these employees to obtain additional education in order to provide them with better employment opportunities. UVRMC allowed two graduate students at the Department of Linguistics and English Language at Brigham University to design and implement an ESP course to help UVRMC housekeepers improve their language skills in preparation to apply and participate in a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) course offered through IHC University. This report covers the linguistic needs analysis of the participants, situational analysis of UVRMC in terms of the support given to the curriculum, the designing of goals and objectives, the syllabus, the teaching of the syllabus, some material development, and the assessment of language learning. It also describes the instruments used to obtain information during each step of the designing of the curriculum and its implementation, analyzes that information, presents results, assesses the curriculum's efficacy, and explains the implications for other ESP curricula in the field of nursing and other scientific fields.

Тема выпускной квалификационной работы – «Моделирование двуязычного тезауруса инвестиционных терминов (на материале англоязычных и русскоязычных текстов тематики "Инвестиционная деятельность")». Цель исследования заключается в создании модели двуязычного словаря-тезауруса терминов инвестиционной деятельности. Объектом исследования данной работы служат инвестиционные термины в английском и русском языках. Предметом исследования является моделирование двуязычного русско-английского тезауруса инвестиционных терминов. Для научной работы использовались такие общенаучные методы исследования, как описание, классификация, метод сплошной выборки, а также лингвистические методы исследования, а именно: метод дефиниционного анализа, метод контекстного анализа, семантический анализ. Научная новизна исследования заключается в разработке специального двуязычного тезауруса, включающего терминологию инвестиционной деятельности, которым может воспользоваться не только представитель профессиональной экономической среды, но и любой актор, имеющий целью познание терминов сферы инвестиционной деятельности. Результаты исследования могут быть использованы в практической деятельности переводчика, для преподавания теории и практики перевода будущим переводчикам и лингвистам, а также могут быть применены в учебно-методической деятельности при создании учебных пособий по переводу и достижению эквивалентности текстов. / The topic of the present graduation thesis is “Modelling of Bilingual Thesaurus of Investment Terms (A Study of English and Russian Texts in the field of Investment Activity)”. The purpose of the study is to develop a model of a bilingual dictionary of investment terms. The subject of the research is investment terms in the English and Russian languages. The scope of the research includes developing the principles of compiling a bilingual dictionary of investment terms, including an appropriate methodological base. We used a set of scientific methods common for different scientific fields: descriptive method, classification of units, continuous sampling methods; as well as specific linguistic methods such as definition analysis, context analysis, semantic analysis. The work is novel in that it develops an English-Russian bilingual thesaurus of investment terms which can be used not only by specialists in linguistics, translation, and terminography, but also any person who deals with investment activities. The results of the research may be used in translation and interpreting practice, as teaching materials for students majoring in translation.

La formation linguistique des professionnels en administration à l'université : ce que nous apprennent les évaluations de programme

Cette recherche avait pour objectif d’analyser les évaluations de programmes d’études en langues de spécialité de 1er cycle universitaire afin de dégager les enjeux et la pertinence de ces formations. Trois questions de recherche sont poursuivies : • Quels établissements d’enseignement supérieur canadiens offrent des programmes d’études professionnalisant intégrant des compétences langagières sur objectifs spécifiques et le savoir-faire professionnel? • Compte tenu de la nature et de la fonction des programmes et des cours de langues de spécialité au sein des établissements d’enseignement supérieur, - quels sont les enjeux principaux ? - quelles sont les recommandations les plus fréquentes dans les rapports des évaluateurs externes ? L’analyse révèle que les enjeux principaux sont l’apport des formations aux besoins d’emploi ; la correspondance aux besoins des bénéficiaires ; l’évaluation systématique et justifiée lors de la prise de décisions ; la révision, mise à jour et évaluation systématique des programmes ; la collaboration interdisciplinaire et interuniversitaire ; l’enseignement des compétences langagières de la discipline professionnelle sous-jacente ; l’enseignement de la perspective interculturelle ; l’objectif constitutif ou instrumental de l’acquisition des langues ; la professionnalisation de la discipline au lieu de la fonction « service » ; la promotion de programmes, de collaborations et d’échanges internationaux ; l’intégration des TIC ; et la certification en langue de spécialité. Les évaluateurs externes recommandent la modernisation et la réorganisation des cours, la mise sur pied des collaborations, l’amélioration des formules et de l’offre des échanges internationaux, l’élaboration des stratégies pour étudier et planifier le lancement des initiatives, la promotion des bénéfices des connaissances langagières auprès des autres disciplines et facultés, la création des stratégies de révision de programme, et la mise en place des dispositifs pour profiter de nouvelles ressources technologiques. Ainsi, dans un premier temps, les résultats permettent d’apporter à la didactique des langues un éclairage sur la valeur de la fonction formative des mécanismes d’évaluation de programme. Dans un deuxième temps, ils apportent aux praticiens un éclairage sur la qualité, la pertinence et les enjeux des formations en langue de spécialité et un éclairage sur l’importance et l’impact des pratiques évaluatives sur les décisions prises. / This study was designed to analyse undergraduate programme reviews of languages for specific purposes (LSP) in order to discover the stakes and the pertinence of this training offered at Canadian institutions of higher learning. The three research questions are: • Which Canadian institutions of higher learning offer curricula integrating competences in LSP and professional know-how? • Taking into account the nature and function of LSP programs and courses within higher education, what are the major stakes? • What are the most frequent recommendations found in the external reviewers’ program assessments, taking into account the nature and function of LSP programs and courses? The analysis revealed that the most important stakes in providing quality, pertinent training in LSP are contribution of course content to professional training; correspondence to the needs of the learners; systematic programme evaluation including proof for decision-making; systematic programme revision, updating and evaluation; interdisciplinary and interuniversity collaboration; teaching language competences related to the underlying professional discipline; teaching intercultural perspectives; constitutive or instrumental objective of language acquisition; professionalization of the discipline rather than the “service” function; promoting programmes, collaborations and international exchanges; integrating information and communication technologies; and providing learners with opportunities for formal language certification in LSP. The external evaluators recommended modernising and reorganising courses, setting up collaborations, improving international exchanges and methods for promoting them, elaborating strategies for studying and implementing initiatives, promoting the benefits of language study to other disciplines and faculties, creating strategies for programme revision, and formulating plans of action to take advantage of new technological resources. These findings therefore shed light on the value of the formative function of curriculum evaluation mechanisms for the field of language teaching and on the stakes involved for teaching practitioners in providing quality, pertinent LSP training. They also shed light on the importance and the impact of evaluation practices on decision-making.

Modely začlenění odborné přípravy do výuky anglického jazyka / Language and content integration models in ELT

The thesis focuses on the topic of language and content integration in ELT in a broad sense, i.e. it discusses not only CLIL but also other models of content-based teaching, viz. ESP (English for Specific Purposes), EAP (English for Academic Purposes), and EMI (English-medium Instruction). In the theoretical part of the thesis, these models are described as regards their history, typical features, teachers, learners, as well as benefits and negatives. The empirical part of the thesis explores the current practice of language and content integration at Czech general secondary schools ("grammar schools"). The research is based on case studies of five teachers who teach various courses belonging to this category. The preliminary research investigated what courses are currently being offered at grammar schools in Prague; they are mostly elective courses. Our research findings suggest that language and content integration in the form of elective courses is a rather common practice, although often unconscious. Teachers tend to act on the basis of their intuition rather than their knowledge of theory and practice of language and content integration. The most difficulties were related to linguistic, cultural and organizational aspects of the university system..This work gives leads and alternatives to improve the integration of foreign students in French universities. There fore we propose basis for the development of a program for French university purpose aimed at preparing students to acquire linguistic, disciplinary and methodological skills for university life due to an analysis of their specific needs.

Investigating effective teaching of an online module in an Open Distance learning environment: a case study

Text in English / In a quest to identify best practices in teaching courses in English for Specific Purposes (ESP), this study investigated effective teaching of an online English module in an Open Distance Learning (ODL) environment. Although ODL is attractive to both students and lecturers, there are significant problems regarding how learning, teaching, interaction and assessment should be conducted in this context. The problems are exacerbated by the limited knowledge of using the online systems and constraints linked to time spent on tasks. The study adopted the qualitative research approach, using a case study design and data collected from three research instruments, namely online questionnaires, an online observation schedule and a content analysis schedule. The research population in the current study comprised students, lecturers, and e-tutors based at one ODL university. In order to engender best practices of effective teaching in an ODL environment, the Community of Inquiry (Col) framework and Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD) theory were applied to the research findings of the current study. The findings indicate that effective teaching of an online English module in an ODL context could take place when content is effectively structured; assessment reflects course content; there is teamwork and collaboration amongst lecturers; students effectively interact with the material, lecturers/e-tutors, and with each other. The findings of this study add to the volume of research on best practices for effective online ESP teaching in ODL higher learning institutions. / English Studies / D. Litt. et Phil. (English)
