The Juarez Stake Academy

Valentine, Dale M. 01 January 1955 (has links) (PDF)
While the history of the Latter-day Saints who colonized in Mexico is probably not generally known by the majority of Latter-day Saints living throughout the world today, it nevertheless comprises an exceptionally colorful and exciting chapter of the history of Mormonism. The Latter-day Saints who went to Mexico created there a culture and society which has never been duplicated. Probably one of the chief concerns of the Mormon Colonists in Mexico was to establish in their society a culture which would be lastingly enduring and which would progressively improve. Secondly, it is also probable that they were passionately desirous of having their children share their same convictions concerning religion and morality. The Colonists determined that the best way to insure a realization of these desires was through their system of schooling—secular as well as religious. These appear to be the aims which justified the existence of the Juarez Stake Academy. Because of the unique circumstances which account for the existence of both the Mexican colonies and the subsequent existence of the Juarez Academy neither can be understood or explained without looking to certain attendant circumstances. Although this study is concerned primarily with the Juarez Stake Academy, it will nevertheless be necessary to look to these other circumstances.

Does deliberate friction within interaction design lower the number of user errors in the staking process of Proof-of-Stake blockchains?

Gustavsson, Emil, Ellebrink, Gabriel January 2020 (has links)
This study evaluates whether intentionally implemented friction within interaction design can reduce the amount of user errors in the staking process within blockhains with Proof-of-Stake technology. Intentionally implemented friction has previously been proved to reduce user errors. It is speculated that blockchains may be used to a greater extent in the future. Since user errors in the staking process of a blockchain with Proof-of-Stake technology can result in money being lost, that field was selected to investigate if friction can result in fewer user errors. This study is limited to a type of deliberate friction called design for pauses which aims to temporarily pause the users interaction. In the study, two versions of a prototype were created to simulate the staking process for the Ethereum blockchain and were tested on two different test groups. One version of the prototype had intentionally added friction while in the other version no friction was added intentionally. Participants in the test were asked to perform the staking process in the prototype. Their interactions were analyzed and statistics were kept on the number of user errors. The user errors were divided into two categories: slips and mistakes. The results of the tests shows that deliberate friction of type design for pauses leads to reduced number of user errors of type mistakes. Further research is needed in order to answer whether design for pauses may reduce the number of user errors of type slips.

A Distributed Public Key Infrastructure for the Web Backed by a Blockchain / En distribuerad publik nyckel-infrastruktur för webben uppbackad av en blockkedja

Fredriksson, Bastian January 2017 (has links)
The thesis investigates how a blockchain can be used to build a decentralised public key infrastructure for the web, by proposing a custom federation blockchain relying on honest majority. Our main contribution is the design of a Proof of Stake protocol based on a stake tree, which builds upon an idea called follow-the-satoshi used in previous papers. Digital identities are stored in an authenticated self-balancing tree maintained by blockchain nodes. Our back-of-the-envelope calculations, based on the size of the domain name system, show that the block size must be set to at least 5.2 MB, while each blockchain node with a one-month transaction history would need to store about 243 GB. Thin clients would have to synchronise about 13.6 MB of block headers per year, and download an additional 3.7 KB of proof data for every leaf certificate which is to be checked.

Large-Scale Assessment as a Tool for Monitoring Learning and Teaching: The Case of Flanders, Belgium

De Corte, Erik, Janssen, Rianne, Verschaffel, Lieven 12 April 2012 (has links) (PDF)
Traditional tests for large-scale assessment of mathematics learning have been criticized for several reasons, such as their mismatch between the vision of mathematical competence and the content covered by the test, and their failure to provide relevant information for guiding further learning and instruction. To achieve that large-scale assessments can function as tools for monitoring and improving learning and teaching, one has to move away from the rationale, the constraints, and the practices of traditional tests. As an illustration this paper presents an alternative approach to largescale assessment of elementary school mathematics developed in Flanders, Belgium Using models of item response theory, 14 measurement scales were constructed, each representing a cluster of curriculum standards and covering as a whole the mathematics curriculum relating to numbers, measurement and geometry. A representative sample of 5,763 sixth-graders (12-year-olds) belonging to 184 schools participated in the study. Based on expert judgments a cut-off score was set that determines the minimum level that students must achieve on each scale to master the standards. Overall, the more innovative curriculum standards were mastered less well than the more traditional ones. Few gender differences in performance were observed. The advantages of this approach and its further development are discussed.

Comparison between consensus algorithms in an IIoT network : Analysis of Proof of Work, Proof of Stake and Proof of Authentication / Jämförande mellan konsensus algoritmer i ett IIoT-nätverk : Analys av Proof of Work, Proof of Stake och Proof of Authentication

Polat, Baran, Göcmenoglu, Ilyas January 2022 (has links)
The Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) is growing day by day and is implemented in many industries. The centralized architecture of an IIoT system is composed of several devices that communicate with a special device only via one link, in an instance where this one link is attacked, major problems could occur for the whole system. The solution is to decentralize the entire architecture, a feature that the implementation of blockchain technology provides. Blockchain technology uses numerous consensus algorithms and some of the consensus algorithms require a large amount of computational power , such as the proof of work consensus algorithm. The problem is that IIoT devices have limited processor performance therefore it is important to find consensus algorithms that are suitable for an IIoT system in terms of time efficiency and electricity consumption. The question then becomes, which of the following different consensus algorithms; proof of work, proof of stake and proof of authentication performs best in an IIoT environment in terms of time efficiency and electricity consumption?  This question can be answered by implementing blockchain technology using the three aforementioned consensus algorithms in an IIoT environment to see which consensus algorithm is the most time efficient and uses the smallest amount of electricity. The results showed that proof of stake was the best consensus algorithm both in terms of time efficiency and electricity consumption.
