The literature of the boarding house : female transient space in the 1930sMullholland, Terri Anne January 2011 (has links)
This thesis investigates a neglected sub-genre of women’s writing, which I have termed the literature of the boarding house. Focusing on unmarried women, this is a study of the alternative rooms ‘of one’s own’ that existed in the nineteen thirties: from the boarding house and hotel, to the bed-sitting room or single room as a paying guest in another family’s house. The 1930s is defined by the conflict between women’s emerging social and economic independence and a dominant ideology that placed increased importance on domesticity, the idea of ‘home’ and women’s place within the familial structure. My research highlights the incompatibility between the idealised images of domestic life that dominated the period and the reality for the single woman living in temporary accommodation. The boarding house existed outside conventional notions of female domestic space with its connotations of stability and family life. Women within the boarding house were not only living outside traditional domestic structures; they were placing themselves outside socially and culturally defined domestic roles. The boarding house was both a new space of modernity, symbolising women’s independence, and a continued imitation of the bourgeois home modelled on rituals of middle-class behaviour. Through an examination of novels by Elizabeth Bowen, Lettice Cooper, Stella Gibbons, Storm Jameson, Rosamond Lehmann, Dorothy Richardson, Jean Rhys, Virginia Woolf, and E. H. Young, this study privileges the literary as a way in which to understand the space of the boarding house. Not only does the boarding house blur the boundaries between public and private space, it also challenges the traditional conceptions of the family home as the sole location of private domestic space. I argue that by placing their characters in the in-between space of the boarding house, the authors can reflect on the liminal spaces that existed for women both socially and sexually. In the literature of the boarding house, the novel becomes a site for representing women’s experiences that were usually on the periphery of traditional narratives, as well as a literary medium for articulating the wider social and economic issues affecting the lives of unmarried women.

Single, ultra-high dose aminoglycoside therapy in a rat model of E. coli induced septic shockPisipati, Amarnath 02 September 2015 (has links)
Bacterial infections are a major cause of morbidity and mortality in both the
community and nosocomial settings, particularly among the elderly and chronically ill. Sepsis is the body’s response to antigens and toxins released by the invasive pathogenic organisms that cause infection. When infection is not effectively controlled, sepsis may develop and progress to severe sepsis and septic shock. Early diagnosis and treatment is pivotal for survival in severe sepsis and particularly, septic shock. Our research focuses on developing a novel treatment strategy for septic shock by using single, ultra-high doses of aminoglycosides. In this project, the effect of a single, ultra-high dose of gentamicin in clearing bacteria from the blood and reducing the bacterial burden in vital organs was evaluated in a rat model of E. coli (Bort strain) induced peritonitis with severe sepsis/septic shock. Serum cytokine levels and serum lactate levels were serially measured. Further, the potential adverse effects of ultra-high dosing of aminoglycoside antibiotics in a short-term (9 h) invasive study and long term (180 days) non-invasive study were assessed. Neuromuscular paralyses due to ultra-high doses of aminoglycosides were assessed. In addition, renal injury markers such as serum
creatinine and urinary Neutrophil Gelatinase Associated Lipocalin (NGAL) were assayed.
The auditory and vestibular function was also assessed after ultra-high dosing of
aminoglycoside in the long-term study. We conclude that animals can tolerate ultra-high doses of aminoglycosides with appropriate support. Animals were under neuromuscular paralysis for 28 – 50 minutes and were on ventilator support after single ultra-high doses (80 and 160 mg/kg) of aminoglycoside antibiotics (gentamicin and tobramycin). There was no significant acute or delayed renal or ototoxicity associated with the single, ultra-high dose aminoglycoside therapy. Histology studies of the kidneys and the cochlea of single, ultra-high aminoglycoside dosed animals and untreated control animals were performed after 180 days (6 months). Results indicated that there were no morphological differences between the treated and untreated control animals. Terminal deoxy-nucleotidyl transferase dUTP nick end labeling (TUNEL) assay of kidney tissue indicated that there was no apoptosis of endothelial cells in the tubular and glomerular regions with single, ultra- high dose of aminoglycosides consistent with an absence of ultrahigh dose induced nephrotoxicity. In the septic shock model, the E. coli Bort was below the
limit of detection from the blood of the animals within minutes after single, ultra-high dose
aminoglycoside administration. After necropsy, bacterial load was determined from all the
vital organs and peritoneal fluid (site of infection). The bacterial levels were below the
detection limit from the kidneys and there was a significant reduction in bacterial counts from all the remaining organs compared to the infected control animals. A decrease in serum cytokine and serum lactate levels compared to baseline was observed after ultra-high doses of aminoglycosides in the septic shock animals. Our studies have indicated that the ultra-high dose gentamicin is well tolerated by rats. It is highly effective in clearing E. coli Bort from the blood and reducing the bacterial burden in the organs in an experimental model of bacterial peritonitis/septic shock. Further studies in larger animals such as rabbits, sheep, pigs or dogs are required to confirm these results. If these findings are replicated in larger animals, this therapy may be developed further from
‘lab to bedside’ to treat septic shock patients in intensive care units (ICUs). / October 2015

The role of Rossby wave breakings in the climate variability at midlatitudesMichel, Clio 26 October 2012 (has links)
This thesis aims at analyzing the dynamics of the interaction between baroclinic waves (stormtrack) and the atmospheric low-frequency variability at midlatitudes. Two different approaches have been followed to study the impact of baroclinic wave breakings on jet-streams, one using reanalysis data and the other numerical simulations of a climate model. The first part of the PhD dealt with the link between Rossby wave breakings and the four weather regimes over the North Atlantic in winter using ERA40 reanalysis. The calculation of wave breaking frequencies showed that wave breakings tend to reinforce weather regimes except the Scandinavian blocking which is destroyed by cyclonic wave breaking south of Greenland. Then, precursors of weather regime transitions have been identified. The first precursor is linked to the linear propagation of low-frequency anomalies (period greater than ten days). This is not a systematic precursor but it occurs during the zonal to blocking transition about one week before this latter and is related to a quasi-stationary wave train excited by convective anomalies in the North Atlantic subtropics. The systematic second precursor is related to non-linear transient eddy interactions and has been linked to Rossby wave breakings. The link between the surface cyclones, Rossby wave breakings and the formation and decay of the Scandinavian blocking has been more precisely studied through the preferential transitions from the zonal weather regime to the blocking and from the blocking to the Greenland anticyclone. During the formation and decay of the blocking, surface cyclones reach the same intensities but do not follow the same trajectories. During the blocking formation, surface cyclones follow straight trajectories toward the north of Scandinavia and are linked to an anticyclonic wave breaking. Whereas during the blocking decay, surface cyclones trajectories are curved over the North Atlantic toward Greenland and are linked to a cyclonic wave breaking favouring the Greenland anticyclone formation. Our study suggests that this difference of behavior comes from the shape of the low-frequency flow which is not the same during the formation and the decay of the blocking and which can favour a particular type of wave breaking rather than another. The second part dealt with the link between sea surface temperatures (SSTs) and the storm-track in the atmospheric general circulation model Arpège-Climat in aquaplanet mode to better understand teleconnections such as the Arctic Oscillation and/or the North Atlantic Oscillation from an idealized point of view. We performed a sensitivity analysis of the eddy-driven jet variability to various stationary SST profiles.

Variabilidade interanual do clima de ondas e sua influência no litoral Sudeste e Sul do Brasil / Interanual wave climate variability and its influence on the south and southeast coast of Brazil, numericalLourenço, Talitha de Souza 04 December 2012 (has links)
The coastal dynamics is mainly controlled by waves, being the energetic storm waves the most influential. This study aims to assess the wave climate influence on coastal processes in the South and Southeastern coast of Brazil. The wave climate was defined through NOAA WAVEWATCH III (NWW3) numerical model results for six offshore points, from 1997 to 2010. In order to propagate the waves onshore the Spectral Wave FM from MIKE 21 numerical model has been applied on Massaguaçu bay (SP) and Imbituba (SC). Most frequent storm waves have been simulated for each year and sector and sediment longshore transport along each sector was calculated. Waves from the South are the most energetic. There is no clear interanual pattern in the time-series. For SP, the most frequent directions (South and South-Southwest) do not generate considerable longshore sediment transport, with East-Southeast to Southeast-South waves generating most sediment transport, which was northwards for all beaches. In SC the sediment transport was northwards in Vila and Vila Nova beaches and southwards on Itapirubá beach, with waves from Eastern and Southern quadrants generating more longshore sediment transport.

Dinâmica sedimentar e resiliência às marés meteorológicas em ambientes costeiros da baixada santista: abordagem numérica / Storm surge resilience and sedimentar dynamic in Santos\'s coastal environment: numerical approachConte, Tito 14 October 2016 (has links)
Among the coastal environments, the estuaries are the main sediment source for oceans. Its sensible dynamic is widely susceptible to changes of natural and anthropogenic impacts the sediment balance of those environments. This work applies the Xbeach numerical model in Santos estuary to understand the storm surges forced by cold fronts on the sediment transport through three scenarios. The first scenario input was astronomic tide sea surface high, the second scenario input was the median cold front and the last scenario input was an extreme cold front. To get the cold front condition we use the NCEP/NCAR reanalysis data. We applied the five most intense days from each cold front condition in the beginning astronomic tide series. With the numerical model results we could understand the erosive action from the cold fronts and how it compensates the depositional period without any cold fronts. The extreme cold fronts intensify the depositional/erosion process unbalancing the system beyond the resilience capacity.

Faktorer för effektiv infiltration av dagvatten hos permeabel asfalt / Factors for effective infiltration of storm water in permeable asphaltHedlöf Ekvall, Linnea January 2019 (has links)
It is important that permeable asphalt is able to infiltrate storm water in the long-term for it to be a viable alternative for handling storm water. Permeable asphalt will always, in some way, be exposed to fine particles and therefore there is a risk that clogging will occur and that the permeable asphalt will lose its ability to infiltrate storm water. As a mean of maintenance cleaning with high pressure washing and vacuum cleaning can be done to prevent clogging. In this master thesis the effect of high pressure washing and vacuum cleaning on the infiltration capacity of permeable asphalt was examined. Also, the most suitable type of substructure for effective infiltration was examined. A literature study and interviews were conducted in combination with infiltration experiments on two locations with permeable asphalt in Uppsala. Literature studies and interviews state that for the substructure to be hydrologically well functioning it is important that every layer in the substructure really is permeable. The substructure should also be adapted to the conditions at the site where it is built. For example, conditions to take into consideration are soil type and highest level of groundwater. All through literature and interviews regular maintenance is said to be very important for the long-term functioning and infiltration of permeable asphalt. The infiltration experiments were conducted at a parking lot at a shopping center in Gnista and a small local street in Gränby backe. The infiltration capacity of the permeable asphalt was measured before and after maintenance with high pressure washing and vacuum suction. No infiltration capacity could be measured before or after maintenance at Gnista. In Gränby backe the infiltration capacity was 0,47-0,71 mm/min before maintenance and 1,24-12,23 mm/min after. According to this infiltration capacity the permeable asphalt in Gränby backe can infiltrate design rains with return periods of 7 years to over 1000 years and with a duration of 10 minutes. In research, high pressure washing, and vacuum suction were found to be able to maintain, and in some cases restore, infiltration capacity. In this master thesis’ infiltration experiments a positive effect on infiltration capacity by cleaning with high pressure washing and vacuum suction was partially found. According to this high pressure washing and vacuum suction can be recommended as a maintenance method on permeable pavement. The results from the two experiment sites stood apart from each other as Gnista had no infiltration capacity neither before nor after cleaning. In age, the two sites only differ by one year, and since they were built they have received similar maintenance and literature shows that high pressure washing and vacuums suction have an effect on infiltration capacity. This might indicate that the lack of infiltration capacity at Gnista might be due to something else than clogging.

Conditions for appropriation of the rainwater management systems of the Lyon metropolis.Ah Leung, Sébastien 23 June 2017 (has links)
To better manage storm water and to respond to problems related to the sanitation networks conceived in the 19th Century, some alternative techniques, other than networks, are being put forward. The “all tubes” concept is giving way to various technical objects of a hybrid nature made up of natural components and synthesized material. The physical appearance of these “natural objects” is double (both natural and artificial) and they fulfil various purposes. Thus, their insertion in the landscape can be delicate. How are these natural objects seized by society? In this process are any difficulties encountered? How is the place for natural objects defined in a city? The purpose of this dissertation is triple: (1) gather information on the relationship between societies and natural objects, (2) collect data on the public's use and practices, (3) discuss a methodology to study human behavior. Three inquiries were carried out during the four seasons of the year and in twelve sites; they were based on direct observation and systematized photography. Based on the fieldwork and the concept of “genèse instrumentale” developed by Rabardel, a discussion was developed on the building of a natural object as a tool. Subsequently, based on the observation of the public, practices, uses and the conditions in which these natural objects are used were defined. The dissertation concludes by highlighting the advantages and the limits of direct observation, and by developing the biases such as the context in which the data was analyzed, in order to suggest some possible methodological enhancements which could help future studies.

Storm Frequency in the Northern Baltic Sea Region and its Association to the North Atlantic OscillationArra, Venni January 2018 (has links)
Storms can be both destructive and valuable at the same time. They expose coastal areas to various risks but can also enhance the supply of wind energy and provide marine ecosystems with oxygen rich water. As the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) is known to have a significant impact on the wind climate in Europe, investigating its interconnection to storm frequency and intensity under global warming circumstances in the Northern Baltic Sea region was of interest in this study. Wind speed data series of annual storm counts were obtained from five meteorological stations along with PC-based NAO values over the period 1960-2017. The data series were analysed in Microsoft Excel and modelled using a Poisson regression or negative binomial regression model in SPSS Statistics. The results display an unsystematic spatial pattern both in the association to the NAO as well as in the overall storm frequency. However, storm (≥ 21 m s-1) frequency has generally been decreasing, whereas the proportion of severe storms (≥ 24 m s-1) has slightly been increasing, suggesting a tendency toward stronger but fewer storms. Even though only certain data series display statistically significant findings (p ≤ .05), a majority of the winter storms and severe winter storms display a positive association, indicating that a higher NAOI is related to a greater number of winter storms. The spatial and temporal variability in the obtained results can partially be explained by storm tracks and prevalent wind directions. Nevertheless, inhomogeneities do presumably affect the wind speed observations through internal and external influences and changes related to the meteorological stations. Future research should, therefore, also consider integrating other storm related parameters, such as direct air pressure measurements, wave heights and storm surges, as well as implement different data homogenization methods and techniques.

Analytical and Numerical Modeling of Long Term Changes to Tides, Storm Surge, and Total Water Level Due to Bathymetric Changes and Surge CharacteristicsFamilkhalili, Ramin 05 June 2019 (has links)
Natural and local anthropogenic changes in estuaries (e.g., sea-level rise, navigation channel construction and loss of wetlands) interact with each other and produce non-linear effects. There is also a growing recognition that tides in estuaries are not stationary. These factors together are changing the estuarine water level regime, however the implications for extreme water levels remain largely unknown. Changes over the past century in many estuaries, such as channel deepening and streamlining for navigation have significantly altered the hydrodynamics of long waves, often resulting in amplified tides (a ~85% increase in Wilmington, NC since 1900) and storm surge in estuaries. This research focuses on establishing analytical and numerical models that simulate a wide range of systems and flow conditions that combine multiple flood sources: astronomical tide, storm surge, and high river flow. To investigate the effects of estuarine bathymetry conditions (e.g., channel depth, convergence length), hurricane conditions (e.g., pressure and wind field), river discharge, and surge characteristics (e.g., time scale and amplitude and relative phase) on tide and storm surge propagation, I develop an idealized analytical model and two numerical models using Delft-3D. The Cape Fear River Estuary, NC (CFRE), and St Johns River Estuary, FL (SJRE) are used as case studies to investigate flood dynamics. The analytical approach has been compared and verified with idealized numerical models.
I use data recovery, data analysis, and idealized numerical modeling of the CFRE to investigate the effects of bathymetric changes (e.g., dredging and channel modification) on tidal and storm surge characteristics over the past 130 years. Data analysis and modeling results suggest that long-term changes in tides can be used along with the tidal analysis tools to investigate changes in storm surge. Analysis indicate that tidal range in Wilmington, NC (Rkm 47) has doubled to 1.55m since the 1880s, while a much smaller increase of 0.07m observed close to the ocean in Southport (Rkm 6) since the 1920s. Further, model results suggest that the majority of long term changes in tides of this system have been caused by deepening the system from 7m to 15.5m due to dredging, rather than by changes in the coastal tides. Numerical modeling using idealized, parametric tropical cyclones suggests that the amplitude of the worst-case, CAT-5 storm surge has increased by 40-60% since the nineteenth century.
Storm surges are meteorologically forced shallow water waves with time scales that overlap those of the tidal bands. Using data, I show that the surge wave can be decomposed into two sinusoidal waves. Therefore, I analytically model surge via a 3-constituent analytical tide model, where the third constituent is the dominant semi-diurnal tide and friction is linearized via Chebyshev polynomials. A constant discharge is considered to approximate fluvial effects The analytical model is used to study how surge amplitude, surge time scale, and surge-tide relative phase affect the spatial pattern of amplitude growth and decay, and how depth changes caused by channel deepening influence the magnitude of a storm surge. I use non-dimensional numbers to investigate how channel depth, surge time scale and amplitude, surge asymmetry, and relative timing of surge to tides alter the damping or amplification of surge along the estuary. The non-dimensional numbers suggest that increasing depth has similar effects as decreasing the drag coefficient. Similarly, larger time scale has an equivalent effect on tide and surge as increasing depth due to channel deepening. Analytical model results show that the extent of the surge amplification is dependent on the geometry of the estuary (e.g., depth and convergence length) and characteristics of the surge wave. Both models show that much of the alterations of water levels in estuaries is due to channel deepening for navigation purposes and that the largest temporal change occur for surges with a high surge to D2 amplitude ratio and a short time scale. Model results farther indicate that surge amplitude decays more slowly (larger e-folding) in a deeper channel for all surge time scales (12hr-72hr). Another main finding is that, due to nonlinear friction, the location of maximum change in surge wave moves landward as the channel is deepened. Thus, changes in flood risk due to channel deepening are likely spatially variable even within a single estuary.
Next, I use the verified analytical model and numerical models to investigate the effects of river flow on surge wave propagation, and spatial and temporal variability of compound flooding along an estuary. To model the historic SJRE, I digitize nautical charts of SJRE to develop a numerical model. Both the numerical and analytical models are used to investigate the contribution of tide, surge, and river flow to the peak water level for historic and modern system configurations. Numerical modeling results for hurricane Irma (2017) show that maximum flood water levels have shifted landward over time and changed the relative importance of the various contributing factors in the SJRE. Deepening the shipping channel from 5.5m to 15m has reduced the impacts of river flow on peak water level, but increased the effects of tide and surge. Sensitivity studies also show that peak water level decreases landward for all river flow scenarios as channel depth increases. Model results show that the timing of peak river flow relative to the time of maximum surge causes very large changes in the amplitude of total water level, and in river flow effects at upstream locations for modern configuration than for the historic model. Changes in surge amplitudes can be interpreted by the non-dimensional friction number, which shows that depth (h), surge time scale (T=1/w), and convergence length-scale (Le) affect the damping/amplification of both tides and surge waves.
Overall, this study demonstrates that a system scale alteration in local storm surge dynamics over the past century is likely to have occurred in many systems and should be considered for system management. The results of this research give the scientists and engineer a better understanding of tide, river flow, and surge interactions, and thereby contribute to an understanding of how to predict storm surges and help mitigate their destructive impacts. Future system design studies also need to consider long-term and changes of construction and development activities on storm surge risk in a broader context than has historically been the case.
