"That the union of the labor forces shall be permanent" / Kansas populist newspapers and the homestead and Pullman strikes

Carruthers, Bruce Cameron 05 1900 (has links)
Historians disagree on the reasons the Populist Movement and labor failed to achieve a political coalition. Some find the cause in a backward-looking Populist ideology that imagined solutions to the problems of rapid industrialization could be found in a yeoman republic. According to this view, rank-and-file Populists neither understood nor had sympathy with the problems facing workers in the mass industries of the late twentieth century. Others see Populism as a progressive movement that accepted industrialization but sought to bring it under government control so that its material advantages would benefit all citizens, especially the producer classes of farmers, laborers, and small businessmen. These historians blame the failure of a coalition to develop on the immaturity of the labor movement; it was not intellectually or organizationally advanced enough to appreciate Populists’ shared interests with workers or to accept their offer of a coalition. Richard Hofstadter and Oscar Handlin are key scholars in the first school; Lawrence Goodwyn and C. Vann Woodward are acknowledged spokespersons for the second. This study attempts to address the coalition issue by examining the responses of Populist and Republican newspapers to the Homestead Strike of 1892 and the Pullman Strike of 1894. These strikes were selected because both were notorious for their violence and bloodshed and both elicited armed government intervention on behalf of business. Newspapers were examined around the time of the strikes to gain a sense of local Populist sympathy with labor and of its commitment to a political coalition of farmers and workers. Populist response was compared to opinions expressed in Republican newspapers to determine if significant ideological differences existed between the Parties. Reviewing newspapers throughout the state and for events that occurred two years apart served as a check on regional and chronological variations. In all, over 400 newspaper editions were reviewed. The study’s findings solidly support to the perspective that depicts Populism as actively seeking a coalition based on a realistic understanding of labor’s position in an industrial economy. Universal editorial stances in favor of labor also advance the position that this was an authentic grass-roots expression and not simply a reflection of national leadership ideology. All Populist newspapers called for a political coalition of farmers and laborers. Populist response was markedly different than Republican. With a few exceptions, Republican newspapers took the side of capital. Further, this investigation revealed no evidence of desire to return to an imaginary yeomen republic in Populist newspapers. The study also examined the newspapers for instances of anti-Semitism and nativism associated with Homestead and Pullman. There was little evidence of either. While this might not be surprising with regard to anti-Semitism since the strikes did not revolve around issues of banking or credit, it is significant with regard to nativism. Anti-foreigner sentiment was often associated with strikes and with the importation of cheap, European labor. If nativism infected the Populist Movement, as is claimed by many historians who see it as a reactionary movement that practiced status politics, it should have been reflected in the pages of these newspapers. Its absence raises questions about negative conceptualizations of the Movement. / Thesis (M.A.)--Wichita State University, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, Dept, of History.

COOPERATIVE EMOTIONAL INTERACTION IN VIRTUAL COMPETITIVE GROUP ACTIVITY

Olsson, Josefine, Vahlroos, Riikka January 2018 (has links)
This study examines emotional interaction within virtual competitive group activity. The participants are 5 Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (CS:GO) players who belong to the same team. The study is an observational study in a naturalistic setting that utilizes an inductive- deductive approach. The study uses a methodology developed specifically for video-based research as well as Ethnomethodological conversation analysis (EMCA). The data consists of video and audio recorded on the participants’ computers during a match. The results illustrate how players utilize emotional interactions in different ways during a virtual competitive group activity. The interpretations of the data were based on two theories: The Emotions as temporal interpersonal system (TIES) model and the Emotions as social information (EASI) model. Using the TIES model, instances of co-regulation and co-dysregulation in the participants’ interactions during the match are explored. Using the EASI model, the participants’ use of emotions as information was examined. Our interpretations indicate that players use emotions in their interactions during a virtual competitive group activity and partake in interactions where the emotional content escalates and de-escalates. We suggest that these findings should be taken into consideration when developing training programmes for esports athletes and that further research on emotional interactions within competitive virtual context is possible.

Vztah mezi typem došlapu a incidencí zranění dolních končetin u běžkyň na 800 metrů / The relationship between foot strike pattern and the incidence of the lower limb injuries in female runners in 800 meters

Höferová, Karin January 2021 (has links)
Objectives: The aim of the study was to evaluate how lower limbs injuries are related to footstrike pattern in 800 m women runners aged 16 - 22 in the Czech Republic and around the world. Methods: Due to the current epidemiological situation, the original field investigation of 48 runners was not possible to complete. Literature research on the topic and the series of ten case studies were performed instead. The research was performed in following databases: Medline, ScienceDirect, SPORTDiscus and Bibliographia medica Čechoslovaca. Results showed seven studies that met inclusion criteria. After that footstrike pattern was evaluated and compared with injury history in 10 women runners in 800 meters, who took part in the Czech Republic championship. Results: Two studies out of seven confirmed a higher incidence of injuries in RFS than in FFS, 4/7 did not show a significant difference, 1/7 did not evaluate the higher incidence in one or the other type of the footstrike. Three studies out of seven confirmed the relationship between RFS and knee injuries. Furthermore, two of them showed relationship between RFS and hip pain. 2/7 did not confirm any relationship between footstrike pattern and specific injury and 2/7 did not evaluated this relationship at all. Based on the series of ten case studies, it...

Kinematic Evolution of a Transcurrent Fault Propagating Through Consecutive Volcanic Cones: a Case of Rheology and Separation / Kinematisk utveckling av en strike-slip-förkastning propagerande genom på varandra följande vulkaniska koner: en studie i reologi och separation

Almeida, Jaime January 2016 (has links)
The main objective of this work is to test the effect of two conical-shaped positive topographic obstacleson propagation of a discrete basement dextral strike-slip or transcurrent fault. A set of sandbox analogue (physical) models was constructed, in which two consecutive sand cones were placed progressivelycloser to each other. Key structural and strain parameters, such axial strain ratios and angular strain, aswell as the width and direction of the basins which formed during deformation were measured and analyzed. This procedure was then repeated with a basal decoupling layer of PDMS beneath each cone,to test the influence of this layer on the deformation. The results show that, for models without a basal decoupling layer, the distance between the two cones governs the end-stage deformation patterns of the topographic obstacles. The proximity of the topographic obstacles causes an increase of their deformation, i.e., results in higher axial strain ratios and angular strain. This effect is particularly noticeable in the first obstacle, which is affected by a strong clockwise rotation. The basal ductile which partly decouples the basement fault from the cover units nullifies the previous effect (the increase in deformation caused by proximity) and, when present, localizes the deformation by not only producing narrower pull-apart basins within the obstacles but alsoby increasing their rotation.

: En kvalitativ studie utifrån uses & gratifications om vad som leder till att publik tittar på eSport / Why Are They Watching eSport? : A Study Based on Uses & Gratifications on Why Young Adults Watches eSport

Gustavsson, Filip January 2022 (has links)
The following essay studies the subject of eSport. The concept audience will be analysed with help of the uses & gratifications theory to create an understanding about the audience in eSport. The study will also with the help of qualitative methods, to be specific interviews and observations, with an applied mini- survey in the observations study the audiences of eSport. Uses & gratifications is a theory that a lot of the time is applicable in qualitative methods because the gratifications that are analyzed very often are easily applicable when writing questions for interviews. The result was that the most important gratifications for the audience of eSport was entertainment and killing time. It’s also important to note that these factors were encouraged for interpretation, and given multiple explanations regarding the same word. It’s based on this view that the study has been analyzed and given a definitive answer on the question why the audience watches eSport.

An analysis of legal implications for participating in an unprotected strike

Mawasha, Mashale B. 20 August 2014 (has links)
The effective management of a strike is generally a challenging phenomenon which impacts on employers, employees and the general public. The main purpose of this study was to analyse the legal implications of employees’ participation in an unprotected strike. The study also explored requirements for a strike to be protected in compliance with the prescribed legislation. From the literary review, cases and legislation, it became clear that compliance plays a key role when a consideration is taken by employees to take part in a strike during dispute resolution. In analysing the legal consequences for participating in an unprotected strike, a finding was made that employers in the end have an upper hand in that when all due processes and procedures are followed, they are empowered to dismiss employees. Legislation and international standards form the cornerstone upon which dispute resolution mechanisms and the rights of employers and employees are derived from. / Mercantile Law / LL.M. (Labour law)

The American Federation of Musicians' Recording Ban, 1942-1944, and its Effect on Radio Broadcasting in the United States

Austin, Mary M. 05 1900 (has links)
James Caesar Petrillo, President of the American Federation of Musicians, called a strike effective July 31, 1942, prohibiting union members from making any disc recordings or electrical transcriptions. The present study recounts the history of that strike, including efforts to end it, reactions to it by various government and trade organizations and the circumstances under which it finally did end. The study focuses on the effect of the strike on radio broadcasters, both directly (through recordings they used) and indirectly (through the strike's effects on the recording and related industries), and concludes that it changed the character of radio's music somewhat, but had little detrimental effect on radio's profits.

Spéciation du cuivre en milieu hydrothermal profond et dans les zones de suintements froids / Copper speciation in deep exosystems : hydrothermal vents and cold seeps

Aumond, Virginie 19 December 2013 (has links)
This work presents the copper speciation in the deep ocean and the exchanges existing between different size fractions : particulate, dissolved and colloidal. It focus on the mixing zone between deep sources and seawater. The enhancement of our knowledge and the optimization of instrumentation make possible the development of sampling and analysis strategies accorded with the nature and the accessibility of these extreme environments. A part of this work consisted in the development of effective analysis methods for the quantification of copper and copper’s ligands. Our results showed that physical speciation seems to be essentially controlled by the variations of pH and oxydoreductive caracteristics during the dilution of the hydrothermal fluid by seawater. The chemical speciation of copper seems essentially controlled by sulfide ligands and the oxydative caracteristics of the environment. The environment is generally more complexing on Lucky Strike vent field than in Guaymas Basin. Around each vent, pseudopolarography and complexing capacities showed that the environment is more complexing in the anoxic zone, near the source, than in the oxic zone. In the oxic zone, copper is generally labile and its concentrations (they can reach 100 nM) exceed the ligands concentrations. In the oxic zone, around 27% of the complexes are dissociated, whereas around 73% remains stabilised.
