Herman's father warned him of what would follow in the wake of the Faraday Bridge's construction. Like so many others cut short of pay after the bridge was completed, Herman finds himself confined to a plummeting slum during the high American years following World War II. Haunted by his inability to fulfill his dead father's expectations and the fear of losing his girlfriend, Herman confides in a shadowy underground figure who claims to know how the people of the borough can take back everything they have lost. Some Kind of Glorious is an account of one man's struggle to revive life within himself while being urged to tear the world apart for the sacrifice of his endeavor. It explores the minds of common men to understand how far they are willing to stretch morality in order to save themselves from tragedy. The lines separating the mad and the moral begin to fade as Herman and others follow an enigmatic figure into a clandestine battle with the world, and his middle-aged search for manhood blurs as he struggles to understand what he must become to satisfy his love, and his torment.

Dans ce travail, il s’agira tout d’abord de concevoir un musée du Mouvement des Travailleurs Ruraux Sans Terre au Brésil. La lutte des sans terre est l’un des phénomènes sociaux et politiques les plus importants de notre histoire. Le Mouvement des Sans Terres (MST), pilier de la mobilisation populaire au Brésil, est la plus importante référence dans la lutte contre l’inégalité sociale et le néolibéralisme dans la mesure où celui-ci conduit à un approfondissement du processus de concentration de richesse, inhérent au système capitaliste, et des inégalités socio-économiques. Dans un premier temps, nous analyserons la conception de ce musée, ses caractéristiques, ses objectifs, son importance pour le développement social, économique et politique du Brésil et les possibilités de sa création dans ce pays. Nous verrons que le Musée du MST que nous concevons est un nouveau type de musée, que nous avons défini comme un Musée de Lutte, avec une nouvelle muséologie que nous dénommions de Muséologie de la Contemporanéité. Celle-ci suggère la nécessité d’adéquation ou d’actualisation des objectifs des musées sociaux, issus du mouvement de la Nouvelle Muséologie des années 1970-80, prenant en compte les problèmes et les aspirations collectives de notre temps. Nous essaierons de comprendre pourquoi les musées de la Nouvelle Muséologie sont devenus inefficaces du point du vu de leurs objectifs initiaux et comment la Muséologie de la Contemporanéité peut les aider à sortir de l’inertie et à les faire jouer de manière plus effective leur rôle de levier social et politique. Enfin, nous espérons, avec la conception du Musée de Lutte et de sa Muséologie de la Contemporanéité, ouvrir des nouvelles perspectives pour le développement de la muséologie sociale, dans laquelle il s’inscrit. Une muséologie politiquement engagée, au service de la construction d’un monde meilleur, de la dignité humaine, de l’égalité et de la justice sociale. / In the present work, we aim, first and foremost, to conceive a museum of the Landless Rural Workers Mouvement (MST) in Brazil. The struggle of the landless is one of the most important social and political phenomena in the history of this country. The Mouvement, mainstay of the popular mobilisation in Brasil, is the main reference in the figth against social inequality and neoliberalism, a force that leads to a strengthening in the concentration of wealth, inherent to the capitalist system, and socioeconomic disparities. First, we analyse the conception of this museum, its feautures, objectives, its importance for the social, economic and political development of Brazil and the feasibility of its implementation. We will see that the MST Museum presents a new kind of museum, one we define as a Struggle Museum, within de contexte of a new museology designated as Museology of Contemporaneity. This new museology highlights the need to adapt or update the objectives of social museums, wich were stablished by the New Museology mouvement of 1970-1980, in order to take into account the problems and collective aspirations of ours time. We will try to understand why the museums of New Museology have become ineffective relative to their original goals and how the Museology of Contemporaneity can provide a way out of a situation of inertia and help them play their role as social and political levers more effectively. Finally, with the conception of the Struggle Museum and its Museologie of Contemporaneity, we hope to open up new perspectives for the development of social museology, wherein it operates ; a politically-engaged museology in service of the creation of a better world, of human dignity, equality and social justice.

Interface of history and fiction : the Zimbabwean liberation war novelMuwati, Itai 11 1900 (has links)
The research examines the interface of history and fiction. It predominantly focuses on historical fiction on the Zimbabwean liberation war written in Shona, Ndebele and English and published after the attainment of political independence in 1980. Historical fiction on the liberation war is both biographical and autobiographical. Consequently, the study comes to the conclusion that historical fiction is a veritable stakeholder in the history issue in Zimbabwe. It becomes another type or source of history that cannot be papered over when dealing with the nation’s history. In a nation where liberation war history is not only taken seriously, but is also a vigorously contested terrain, historical fiction becomes part of those discursive contestations, particularly on nation and nationalism. It is in this regard that the study problematises the interface of history and fiction by reasoning that historical fiction published in the early 1980s largely advances a state-centered perspective which views history, nation and nationalism in positive terms. This discourse uses history in order to argue for a single nation that derives its identity from the heroic and symbolic guerrilla characters. Nationalism is exclusively presented as humanising and as being the sole legitimate political brand capable of leading the nation. On the other hand, historical fiction written in English and published in the late 1980s onwards represents alternative historical truths that contest nationalism and debunk official definitions of nation. This discourse leads to the pluralisation of perspectives on nation and nationalism. The focus on historical fiction published in three languages used in Zimbabwe is a conscious attempt to transcend ethnicity in critical scholarship. Discussing novels in Shona, Ndebele and English, which are the three main languages in Zimbabwe, makes it possible for the study to draw reasoned conclusions on the bearing of time, language, region and background among others on historical representation. This undertaking brings to the fore how literature responding to similar historical processes appears moderately conjunctive and principally disjunctive. Imago relationship therapy was originally applied to couples counselling by Dr Hendrix (1992, 1993). This model was applied to a group of senior managers from the Lonmin Platinum Mine to create an understanding of intrapersonal and interpersonal dynamics to reduce the conflict levels they experienced in the workplace. Imago theory is applicable to the workplace because of the influence of intrapersonal processes on interpersonal dynamics, which is the same influence that causes conflict in romantic relationships.
Love relationships consist of three stages, namely romantic love, the power struggle stage, and the real love stage. In the organisational context, these stages are the initial excitement phase, the power struggle stage, and the conscious relating stage. The study aimed to obtain quantitative and qualitative data on the effects of the Imago theory programme presented to the group of managers. The study thus aimed to determine whether the managers experienced a shift in their consciousness after the programme had been presented. Furthermore, the study aimed to determine whether such a shift in consciousness would have an effect on the individuals’ overall emotional wellbeing and if it would increase their overall life satisfaction. Furthermore, the study investigates if the programme had a positive effect on their interpersonal relationships (particularly with their subordinates).
Twenty-two senior managers and 22 subordinates participated in the study. Certain pre-tests were conducted, followed by the seven-module intervention. The same post-tests were conducted after the training had taken place. Quantitative and qualitative results were obtained. The quantitative results showed that the participants’ problem solving abilities improved and that they experienced marginally higher levels of life satisfaction. The reactivity levels experienced by the participants during conflict situations decreased, and their levels of marital satisfaction improved. The results also showed that the managers responded more positively to their subordinates after the intervention. Furthermore, the subordinates experienced their managers as being more flexible after the intervention. The qualitative results indicated that a shift in consciousness did take place as envisaged. The group understood both intrapersonal and interpersonal psychodynamics. They also willingly applied Imago concepts to improve their functioning in the organisational context. / Psychology / D. They date back to the first quarter of the twentieth century, to the period of British and French involvement in the region in the aftermath of World War I, and the establishment of the state of Israel in 1948. Since the early days of the British mandate, the two peoples, Jordanian and Palestinian, found themselves obliged to interact with each other due to geographic, social, economic and demographic considerations. Following the decision to unite the West Bank and Transjordan to make up the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan in 1950, the West Bank and its people were in the process of integration within Jordan until war halted progress in 1967. This study presents the evolution of Jordanian - Palestinian relations through history. These relations have been both challenged by hardships and influenced by several other Arab states. The current peace process between the Israelis and Palestinians, which could bring about an independent Palestinian state, requires that Jordanians and Palestinians restructure their relations in order to be of mutual benefit. / Brigadier General, Jordanian Army

Illegitimate relationship of Přemysl Otakar II. and Anežka of Kuenring in the context of Přemysl's Austrian politics in the 1250s Hana Trachtová 2010 The aim of this thesis is to demonstrate how the private life of Přemysl Otakar II. was interconnected with his political activities in the 1250s. The assumption is that choosing Anežka of Kuenring as the king's mistress was not accidental, but that it was motivated, among other reasons, also politically. The work covers development of Bohemian-Austrian relations in the Middle Ages up to the early 1260s. It follows the progress of the struggle for the Babenberg heritage as well as other Přemysl's activities in the 1250s. It links Přemysl's political acts to his family issues and it also deals with his relation to the Kuengring family. Attention is also devoted to Přemysl's offspring born out of wedlock, his effort to legitimize three of them and to their further life stories.

The diploma thesis "Major Zeman": Comparative analysis of verbal narratives and TV serial presentations deals with two narrative media that depict the Zeman's story: a literary narrative by Jiří Procházka and its realization as TV series. Factors affecting the resulting form of both versions were identified by means of a gradual analysis of each of the versions. These factors were external interventions made by a management of a TV company and by its professional advisors as well as a mutual rivality of producers of the series. A focus to a TV audience and a literary ambition of Procházka, who attempted to step over the boundaries of a crimi genre, played their roles as well. These all resulted in two differently conceived fiction worlds. The narrative world, built on a myth-building principle, appears to be coherent, joined by an unifying ideological line. On the contrary, the TV series world appears to be scattered.

Particularly these are two proses by Čapek "Obyčejný život" (Common Life) and "Život a dílo skladatele Foltýna "(The Life and Work of Composer Foltýn). These two novels are at first analyzed separately and then compared.

Race and power : the challenges of Intercultural Bilingual Education (IBE) in the Peruvian AndesTonet, Martina January 2015 (has links)
This thesis examines enclaves of oppression and discrimination, which continue to subject indigenous peoples in the Peruvian Andean society to the pernicious legacies of a racist past. As an interpretive framework this interdisciplinary study draws from theoretical approaches to power, which analyse the reproduction of social injustice in post-colonial societies. This research demonstrates how resistance in post-colonial contexts does not always function as a subversive force. Especially when the variable of racism is taken into account, it becomes clearer how acts of opposition end up fostering a tyrannical domination. Examples from Peruvian history, as well as my fieldwork data, will illustrate how resistances and revolutions in the Peruvian Andes have paradoxically reinstated an oppressive and subjugating social system founded in disavowal of the indigenous Other. In dismantling the ramifications of a violent racist legacy, this study explores those social practices and attitudes which in the course of history have resulted in the subjugation of indigenous peoples. These include paternalism, the commodification of indigenous identity and the phenomenon of incanismo. Ultimately, the very negotiation of identities and the making of Peruvian ethnicity will highlight the reasons why, since the 1970s, the pursuit of Intercultural Bilingual Education (IBE) in the Peruvian Andes has been a challenging and uncertain endeavour. By comparison with bordering Andean regions of Ecuador and Bolivia, IBE is not in the hands of indigenous peoples. This thesis will demonstrate that this is in part due to an underpinning racism, which keeps disrupting a sense of belonging to an ethnic identity.

Within a broader political, cultural and industrial context, the report captures anecdotes, observations and interviews with key interviewees and decision makers linked to Moshito, in addition to its dialogue with the interconnectedness of various social theories and concepts, and their relationship with industrial and government policy. Necessarily the research also engages literature concerned with cultural industries, music industry and development discourses.
