This is a journey into sound/bring the noise : a thesis presented in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Fine Arts at Massey University, Wellington, New Zealand

Cairns, Gregory John January 2009 (has links)
The aim of this thesis is to survey the discussions around the position of sound art within the broader arts, and to explore strategies and research areas within fine art and my own practice, so as to identify new areas of enquiry and develop my work within this field. I investigate the phenomenology of vision and hearing and contrast the different ways these two senses operate as primary sources of perception. I analyse the privileging of sight and the dominance of the visual in art institutions. Ideas of the literal and model subject within installation art are explored and the convergence of these subjectivities is overlaid with this phenomenological research, in order to develop a direction within installation art. The lack of authoritative sources in this field, beyond the few relevant texts, has meant that my research has employed respected new media and the Internet as a second tier of sources. I also analyse my own practice as an example of how sound art activates extramusical ideas. My research concludes that sound art has much to reveal to the broader arts community about perception and the creation of meaning, and also that there are many prospective avenues of enquiry within fine arts for the inclusion and analysis of audio based work. Keywords: sound art; phenomenology; hearing; privileging of sight; subjectivities; extramusical; perception.

Exceptional foreigners : Analysing the discourses around immigration detention in Sweden

Norin Jansson, Annie January 2015 (has links)
Based on a discourse analysis of Swedish public investigations regarding immigration detention, this thesis examines the discourses around ‘foreigners’ therein. Rejected asylum-seekers awaiting deportation have gone from being systematically detained in prisons by the police, to instead be confined in detention centres administered by the Swedish Migration Board. Yet, an increased criminalisation is evident. Focusing, in particular, on the legal ambiguity that authorises the detention system to further detain and criminalise asylum seekers, it is argued that the practice of detention can be seen as ‘exceptional’ where discourses of care, suspicion and fear constitute subjectivities such as the ‘identity-less foreigner’, the ‘vulnerable foreigner’, and the ‘dangerous foreigner’.

Considering by socio-educational projects, the actions with a public purpose and with a perspective of human formation, focus to the youths. It is asked, if socio-educational projects influence the configuration of juvenile subjectivity, understood as a cultural historical process that interferes at the individual level without eliminating the structural dimension for the formation of the subject category. Therefor, a qualitative research of an ethnographic perspective was carried out in the Jardim Gonzaga neighborhood, located in the peripheral zone of the city of São Carlos - SP- Brazil, through the conduction of interviews called conversational dynamics with five young people about their trajectories of participation in socio-educational projects, as well as the significance and vision of that process today. In addition, a weekly participant observation was made in a university extension project that takes place in this neighborhood, for a period of eight months and with specific participation in the following six months. The conversational dynamics addressed issues of socialization spaces, experiences, participation trajectories in socio-educational projects, contributions on the present moment of life and perspectives regarding the future. According to the data obtained through the conversations with the five young people, it was the spaces of socialization, the perception of the family, the difficulty of staying in school and the interest in the proposals brought that led them to participate in social projects, as well as the lived experiences in the relations with the technicians and the possibility of expanding their sociability; from where it was observed and concluded that socioeducational projects have influenced the configuration of individual and social subjectivity. This was evidenced, at the individual level in the recognition of their abilities, allowing them to acquire greater security for the confrontation of the tests of life, referred in the discourse of all, maintaining a differential in each one of them; which shows products of their experiences. At the social level, the expansion of the “moratoria juvenil” was evident, allowing experiences of this stage of life. Based on the present study, it can be concluded that the socio-educational projects aimed at the youth population of the peripheries do not succeed in promoting transformations of the vulnerability conditions; however, their contributions are in the mitigation of the impacts of these, mainly at the individual level. What socio-educational projects provide is the influence on the processes of subjectivation of young people, which can impact their lives, but not modify them from the structural point of view.

Lopes, Itamar Cardozo. January 2011 (has links)
The aim of this research is to understand some reasons which have guided the activities of many intellectuals groups in Brazil's half of twentieth century. Then, through analysis of the epistolary rich collection amassed between 1948-1959 by the Centro Cultural Euclides da Cunha, of Ponta Grossa, Paraná, Brazil, this study tries to uncover the great excitement that surrounded the activities of the intellectual group gathered there. By examining these documents it is possible to realize the existence of a very large devotion to scientific, literary and intellectual works. Undoubtedly, those reasons must have occupied considerable time and space in the lives of these people, should have mobilized their existence and thus largely forged their identities. Keeping this in view, the purpose of this work is to try to reconstruct this meaning in its social, conceptual and subjective details, using for that some cultural history methodological guidelines / Mestre

Riverine border practices : people's everyday lives on the Thai-Lao Mekong border

Wisaijorn, Thanachate January 2018 (has links)
Pluralities of people s crossings of the Mekong Thai-Lao border occur as locals subvert, reject, ignore, and embrace the logic of the national border. From a state-centric point of view, the everyday movements of these people, who rely mainly on a subsistence economy and have their own modes of crossing, are undocumented. I argue that people s mobility co-exists with the practice of sedentary assumption. The aim of this thesis is to promote theory related to the Third Space in Borderland Studies by the presentation and analysis of people s pluralities in border-crossings. The borderland area of Khong Chiam (Thailand)-Sanasomboun (Lao PDR) is the location of an in-between state in which spatial negotiations, temporal negotiations, and negotiations of political subjectivities contribute to the nature of mobility in the Third Space. To achieve the objective of this thesis, ethnographic methodology was used over six months of fieldwork from March to September 2016, and included participant observations, interviews and essay-readings that involved 110 participants in the borderland site. People s movements across the Mekong River border occur daily without formal state approval. From the perspective of the Thai Ban, the river is a lived space in which they catch food and use for transport. However, their interpretation of the Mekong as the state boundary does not completely disappear. This thesis examines the everyday banal pluralities of the Thai Ban s border-crossings by weaving together the three concepts of space, temporality, and negotiations of political subjectivities. The spatial and temporal negotiations involved in the border-crossings shape and are shaped by this other interpretation of the Mekong as a lived space, and different political subjectivities contribute to the pluralities of the crossings. The presentation of these pluralities of border-crossings adds to Borderland Studies specifically and the social sciences in general in the development of an understanding of the Third Space. As this thesis focuses on people s mobility at quasi-state checkpoints and in areas along the Mekong Thai-Lao border with no border checkpoints, it is suggested that future research examines the everyday practices of border-crossings at land borders.

No. of bitstreams: 1 2013-DIS-DRSA.pdf: 862498 bytes, checksum: d6af2475b82f4fbe74cd74781c8b02c1 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2013 / Contemporary society is marked by large and constant changes. We live in a fast, fluid and dynamic world, where the inherited certainties of tradition and first modernity give place to uncertainties, risks and unpredictability. Changes are socioeconomic, technological and cultural involving new forms of individual thinking, feeling, acting, and living. Such changes occur singularly in working life, accompanying the changes in the capitalist production mode. The new stage of post-industrial capitalism produces new ideologies and orders of discourse that strongly challenge subjectivities. These ideologies and orders of discourse are materialized and disseminated through self-help manuals and other hybrid types, which tend to favor certain representations of work, the company and the employee, and also to inculcate certain ways of being and acting inside and outside of the workplace. This research investigated how this type of literature provides resources that claim to enable the individual to cope with the new work configuration nowadays and with the existential dilemmas arising from this new scenario. Assuming here the language as a social practice, our main objective was to investigate how the self-help books are related to the sense of uncertainty that characterize the contemporary experience of work and other spheres of life. For this we use the approach of Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) in order to identify the main ideological investments of self-help speech, as presented in two books of the genre: The Monk and the executive, James Hunter (2004) and Be the leader of yourself, Augusto Cury (2004). The analysis revealed that the works studied tend to disseminate certain representations of current problems (for example, unstable and precarious work, the difficulties of leadership) problems as personal and subjective nature, the exclusive purview of the individual. Both take issues and social problems to the sphere of interiority, proposing theories about how the mind works and intervention techniques for personal development and for changing behaviors and habits. To represent these problems as issues of interiority and interpersonal relationships, the works tend to blame the person for the solution of such problems and the pursuit and achievement of your success and happiness. In according to a consumer society depoliticized and fragile in criticizing the system and the social and economic macrostructures, the discourse of self-help drive its "critical" to the individual. This individual feels forced to turn to himself and to interfere on their own attitudes, feelings and behaviors to create change and achieve success. The discourse of self-help in this context meets the new demands and requirements of the existing capitalist order: people engaged in constant self-examination and self-regulation and willing to reorganize while facing uncertainty and risk that are part of their lives. The self-help manuals contribute to the formation of new subjectivities and the inculcation of the "new spirit of capitalism", with new ways of being, acting and interacting that adapt to new labor realities and to the capitalist order in force.

We seek an analysis of psychosocial impact of market logic, expressed in advertising, on the assumption that the commodity fetishism (Marx) manifests itself today twice: not only alienates the social relations of production, but the very subjectivity of the consumer through “super products”. These aggregate “super powers” such as power, high self-esteem and ability to “all-power” and “all-do”, in record time. It is a result of the dissemination of “superhuman” stereotypes, individuals supposedly capable of dealing with the challenges of late modernity, breaking temporal and spatial barriers, via new technologies. Such advertising stereotypes, in turn, are welcomed to the promises of human needs satisfied, instigating the narcissism of individuals (SEVERIANO, 2007). Namely, it sells the idea of “super products” to keep the imagination of narcissistic “superhuman”, naturalizing themselves in this way, the speed of the living and the performance necessary for the accumulation of capital. So, methodologically, this research appears as a theoretical and empirical investigation, theoretical and methodological axis by the Frankfurt School, plus methodological strategies, which include a selection of advertisements. The advertisements collected do appeal to the acceleration of the pace of life through products and services aimed to produce performances “superhuman”. A first collection of advertisements, based on the most prominent content related to the object of study, it was possible to build the following key categories: Omnipotence; Youth and Recognition. The category of Omnipotence refers to advertisements whose promises revolve around the field of nature, expressing power, via products. The category of Youth comes to the uplifting of science as a way to dominate the time and phases of the cycle of life. While in the category of Recognition refers to advertisements that supposedly promote interpersonal relationships and feelings of belonging, recognition, differentiation, friendship, love, etc. In this sense, the final reflections suggest that the time has been valued in the market as a rare object of consumption, aggregate to superprodutos, which causes an apparent objectification of time the weakening of its real sense and its value in use. In addition, individuals have become receptacles of the most varied demands – entered in the key categories – to become "superhuman", generating intense acceleration of the pace of their lives. It also highlights the prominence of category of Omnipotence, leaving clear that contemporary culture has deprived of rightful place own questions of the human condition (such as weakness, imperfection, sadness, finiteness, etc.), for the incorporation of subjectivities.

ABSTRACT This research discusses an approach to the narratives of Alice in Wonderland, in Greek mythology of Narcissus and the Lost Boys in Neverland, the ways to articulate the tangible experiences of youth subject for producing and publicization photographic on social networks, signaling other routes of learning - in particular looking at the narratives woven into the social network Facebook. / This thesis examines discourses on the conscious consumer, who seeks to differentiate itself from a supposed consumerist or regular consumption. Takes as initial base assignments proposed in guides and manuals pro conscious consumption, specifically those produced by Akatu and Idec, which seek to conceptualize, discuss and promote this type of consumer. Understanding this initial group as a prescriptive dimension of discourse, which elaborated indications of action and emplacements of the concept. The unfolding of the work conducts a qualitative analysis of the speeches of individuals from middle class of Rio de Janeiro who identify themselves as this type of consumer. We observe the similarities, differences and developments of these concepts in the speech of individuals in relation to those prescribed in the manuals. So, based on understandings about consumption as a symbolic builder, notions of life projects and self-construction, productions of meaning and significance, personal relations and new forms of political participation, the thesis unfolds in the following aspects: analysis of the bases of origin which formulate possibilities for the insertion in the subject of to be and possible grounds, core constituent elements of in format on of the profile of interviewees and their concepts of consciousness, the emotional and sentimental aspects responsible for the appreciation or depreciation of experience, and expectations and perspectives on the relationships with others, approaching the issue mainly through boring and extreme categories. With this, deepening the bases defining the subjects, their conceptions of consciousness, their fears, anxieties, pleasure and happiness; seeking to understand how subjectivity of these subjects is being produced and how their projects dialogue with the urban space in a big city.
