Towards the grounding of abstract categories in cognitive robots

Stramandinoli, Francesca January 2014 (has links)
The grounding of language in humanoid robots is a fundamental problem, especially in social scenarios which involve the interaction of robots with human beings. Indeed, natural language represents the most natural interface for humans to interact and exchange information about concrete entities like KNIFE, HAMMER and abstract concepts such as MAKE, USE. This research domain is very important not only for the advances that it can produce in the design of human-robot communication systems, but also for the implication that it can have on cognitive science. Abstract words are used in daily conversations among people to describe events and situations that occur in the environment. Many scholars have suggested that the distinction between concrete and abstract words is a continuum according to which all entities can be varied in their level of abstractness. The work presented herein aimed to ground abstract concepts, similarly to concrete ones, in perception and action systems. This permitted to investigate how different behavioural and cognitive capabilities can be integrated in a humanoid robot in order to bootstrap the development of higher-order skills such as the acquisition of abstract words. To this end, three neuro-robotics models were implemented. The first neuro-robotics experiment consisted in training a humanoid robot to perform a set of motor primitives (e.g. PUSH, PULL, etc.) that hierarchically combined led to the acquisition of higher-order words (e.g. ACCEPT, REJECT). The implementation of this model, based on a feed-forward artificial neural networks, permitted the assessment of the training methodology adopted for the grounding of language in humanoid robots. In the second experiment, the architecture used for carrying out the first study was reimplemented employing recurrent artificial neural networks that enabled the temporal specification of the action primitives to be executed by the robot. This permitted to increase the combinations of actions that can be taught to the robot for the generation of more complex movements. For the third experiment, a model based on recurrent neural networks that integrated multi-modal inputs (i.e. language, vision and proprioception) was implemented for the grounding of abstract action words (e.g. USE, MAKE). Abstract representations of actions ("one-hot" encoding) used in the other two experiments, were replaced with the joints values recorded from the iCub robot sensors. Experimental results showed that motor primitives have different activation patterns according to the action's sequence in which they are embedded. Furthermore, the performed simulations suggested that the acquisition of concepts related to abstract action words requires the reactivation of similar internal representations activated during the acquisition of the basic concepts, directly grounded in perceptual and sensorimotor knowledge, contained in the hierarchical structure of the words used to ground the abstract action words.

To have the wolf as your neighbor : A study on how Northern Värmland naturebased tourism operators are affected by the current wolf carnivores.

Knutsson, Christina, Liljedahl, Nathalie January 2016 (has links)

IMPROVING THE DETECTION EFFICIENCY OF CONVENTIONAL PCM/FM TELEMETRY BY USING A MULTI-SYMBOL DEMODULATOR

Geoghegan, Mark 10 1900 (has links)
International Telemetering Conference Proceedings / October 23-26, 2000 / Town & Country Hotel and Conference Center, San Diego, California / Binary PCM/FM has been widely adopted as a standard by the telemetry community. It offers a reasonable balance between detection efficiency and spectral efficiency, with very simple implementation in both the transmitter and receiver. Current technology, however, allows practical implementations of more sophisticated demodulators, which can substantially improve the detection efficiency of the waveform, with no changes to the modulator. This is accomplished by exploiting the memory inherent in the phase continuity of the waveform. This paper describes the implementation and performance of a noncoherent multi-symbol demodulator for PCM/FM. Sensitivity to offsets in carrier frequency, timing, and modulation index is also examined. Simulation results are presented which demonstrate improvements in detection efficiency of approximately 2.5 dB over traditional noncoherent single symbol detectors.

EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS FOR MULTI-SYMBOL DETECTION OF PCM/FM

Geoghegan, Mark 10 1900 (has links)
International Telemetering Conference Proceedings / October 22-25, 2001 / Riviera Hotel and Convention Center, Las Vegas, Nevada / It has been previously shown, through computer simulations, that a multiple symbol detector can provide substantial gains in detection efficiency (nearly 3 dB) over traditional PCM/FM detectors. This is accomplished by performing correlations over multiple symbol intervals to take advantage of the memory inherent in the continuous phase PCM/FM signal. This paper presents measured hardware results, from a prototype developed for the Advanced Range Telemetry (ARTM) Project, that substantiate the previously published performance and sensitivity predictions. Furthermore, this work confirms the feasibility of applying this technology to high-speed commercial and military telemetry applications.

Shawky, Sharif January 2006 (has links)

Gradvis tog jag mig in i hans konstnärskap.

Anglican-Roman Catholic Ecumenical Dialogue: A Case for a Rahnerian Logic of Symbol

Dart, Eric S. 17 May 2016 (has links)
This dissertation examines the ecumenical relationship between the Roman Catholic Church and the Anglican Communion and the necessity for a symbolic cognitive and narrative conversion in both communions. Drawing upon Karl Rahner's theology of symbol, this dissertation argues that such a cognitive and narrative conversion is determined by the interpretation and appropriation of God's mystery as the origin and goal of Christian activity and belief. As such, there is a demand for a second naïveté in both communions, whereby, the methods employed by ecumenical dialogue extend beyond the logic of criticism and seek to embrace a postcritical logic of symbol. / McAnulty College and Graduate School of Liberal Arts; / Theology / PhD; / Dissertation;

Mytologové rané a vrcholné německé romantiky. Pojem mýtu v první polovině 19. stol / The mythologist of the early and high German romanticism. The concept of the myth in the beginning of the 19th Century

Nedbalová, Julia January 2013 (has links)
The thesis presents the mythological studies of the German Romantics. The research focuses on the four important mythologists - Johann Gottfried Herder, Friedrich Creuzer, Karl Otfried Müller and Friedrich Wilhelm Joseph von Schelling. The analysis of their work leads to their specific concept of the myth. The early enlightenment tendencies, which rejected the myths as stories about gods of the undeveloped men were replaced with the conception of the romantics. They disclosed the symbolic character of the myths and explained the origin and nationalization of the myth on the basis of the symbol theory. At the same time they award truth to the mythological process which the man necessarily goes through. The creation of God in the mind of man is clarified with the philosophy of mythology. This way the romantics contribute to the development of the mythology towards a critical historical science.

Nápisy na hrobech (Mikulov) / Inscription on the Graves (Mikulov town)

Fantová, Růžena January 2016 (has links)
The thesis describes all the inscriptions that one can see engraved into the gravestones on current cemeteries in Mikulov. We analyze the first and last names engraved into the gravestones but we focus primarily on epitaphs. In particular, we examine common epitaph themes, the number of their occurrences as well as linguistic errors that the inscriptions contain. In addition, we identify the most commonly quoted passages from the Bible, excerpts of poems, quotes of famous people and the time periods when they were most popular. Last but not least, we explore the symbolism and other nonverbal aspects of the gravestones. Powered by TCPDF (www.tcpdf.org)
