Taxonomia e análise filogenética das espécies historicamente associadas a Mallodeta Butler, 1876 (Lepidoptera, Noctuidae, Arctiinae, Eurochromiina) / Taxonomy and phylogenetic analysis of the species historically associated with Mallodeta Butler, 1876 (Lepidoptera, Noctuidae, Arctiinae, Euchromiina)

Lívia Rodrigues Pinheiro 01 June 2009 (has links)
O gênero Mallodeta Butler, exclusivamente neotropical, contava, no início deste estudo, com seis espécies: M. clavata (Walker) (espécie-tipo), M. sortita (Walker), M. consors (Walker), M. sanguipuncta Druce, M. cubana Gaede e M. simplex Rothschild. / At the beginning of this study the genus Mallodeta Butler, exclusively neotropical, comprised six species: M. clavata (Walker) (type species), M. sortita (Walker), M. consors (Walker), M. sanguipuncta Druce, M. cubana Gaede and M. simplex Rothschild. These species besides Phoenicoprocta parthenii (Fabricius), formerly considered part of Mallodeta, had their phylogenetic relationships elucidated. The monophyly of Mallodeta was not corroborated, and the species historicaly associated to it should be considered, from now on, belonging to three different clades: (i) Mallodeta, composed exclusively by its type species; (ii) Rezia Kirby rev. gen, comprising R. sortita n. comb., R. consors n. comb. and R. sanguipuncta, plus R. cardinale (Hampson), R. erythrarchos (Walker) n. comb., R. cruenta (Perty) n. comb. and R. hanga (Herrich-Schäffer) n. comb., previously treated in the genus Cosmosoma Hübner; (iii) Antilleana n. gen., comprised by A. parthenii n. comb., A. jamaicensis (Schaus) n. comb., A. capistrata (Fabricius) n. comb. and A. carminata (Hampson) n. comb., formerly treated in Phoenicoprocta Druce. Among taxonomic conclusions we discovered M. simplex to be a n. syn. of M. clavata, Glaucopis (Erruca) deyrolii Walker, 1854 n. syn of Rezia sortita, Laemocharis ignicolor Ménétriés n. syn of Rezia erythrarchos and M. cubana n. syn. of A. capistrata. All species studied were redescribed, illustrated and had their geographical distribution elucidated.

(A)rise and (a)wake : An investigation of two verb pairs

Lakaw, Alexander January 2008 (has links)
In this corpus-based study, the two verb pairs arise and rise and awake and wake are investigated. The paper focuses on seven research questions that are related to the meanings of the verbs in question, the semantic specialisations of those verbs, and the semantic relation of the specific verb pair constituents. Furthermore, tendencies of language change are investigated, and an attempt is made to generalise over the influence of the prefix a- on those tendencies. The results of the quantitative and qualitative analysis show that the verbs awake and wake are more synonymous than the verbs arise and rise. It seems as if due to this difference, the two verbs arise and awake are subject to different processes of language change that take their development into different directions. The observations made about the characteristics of the prefix a- that is involved in the two verbs arise and awake are often ambiguous and inconclusive. Therefore, the influence of this prefix on the processes of language change needs to be analysed further by investigating more word pairs distinguished by the absence or presence of the prefix a-.

The use of arise and rise in present-day British & American English : A corpus based analysis of two verbs

Lakaw, Alexander January 2007 (has links)
This corpus based investigation deals with the present-day usage of and the semantic relation between the two verbs rise and arise. Concordance lines containing various forms of the two verbs in question have been taken from six different (sub)corpora and were examined in view of their collocational and semantic characteristics. The basic aims were to investigate the nowadays status of the verbs rise and arise and whether they (still) can be regarded as synonyms. The results show that both verbs can sometimes be used synonymously. Their general semantic relation appeared to be near-synonymy. Furthermore, both verbs seem to have developed a semantic specialisation, which is regarded a counterargument for the thesis that the verb arise is on the verge of dying out.

Context-aware Swedish Lexical Simplification : Using pre-trained language models to propose contextually fitting synonyms / Kontextmedveten lexikal förenkling på svenska : Användningen av förtränade språkmodeller för att föreslå kontextuellt passande synonymer.

Graichen, Emil January 2023 (has links)
This thesis presents the development and evaluation of context-aware Lexical Simplification (LS) systems for the Swedish language. In total three versions of LS models, LäsBERT, LäsBERT-baseline, and LäsGPT, were created and evaluated on a newly constructed Swedish LS evaluation dataset. The LS systems demonstrated promising potential in aiding audiences with reading difficulties by providing context-aware word replacements. While there were areas for improvement, particularly in complex word identification, the systems showed agreement with human annotators on word replacements. The effects of fine-tuning a BERT model for substitution generation on easy-to-read texts were explored, indicating no significant difference in the number of replacements between fine-tuned and non-fine-tuned versions. Both versions performed similarly in terms of synonymous and simplifying replacements, although the fine-tuned version exhibited slightly reduced performance compared to the baseline model. An important contribution of this thesis is the creation of an evaluation dataset for Lexical Simplification in Swedish. The dataset was automatically collected and manually annotated. Evaluators assessed the quality, coverage, and complexity of the dataset. Results showed that the dataset had high quality and a perceived good coverage. Although the complexity of the complex words was perceived to be low, the dataset provides a valuable resource for evaluating LS systems and advancing research in Swedish Lexical Simplification. Finally, a more transparent and reader-empowering approach to Lexical Simplification isproposed. This new approach embraces the challenges with contextual synonymy and reduces the number of failure points in the conventional LS pipeline, increasing the chancesof developing a fully meaning-preserving LS system. Constructing a Polysemous Academic Vocabulary Extent Test Via Polytomous Rasch Model Measurement Analyses

Rowles, Phillip Bruce January 2015 (has links)
Educational measurement research faces an unresolved dilemma: competently meeting the longstanding demand for improved vocabulary strength (depth) aspect assessments. My original contribution to knowledge in the written receptive vocabulary knowledge construct research domain is twofold. My first contribution is proposing an a priori metasynonymy awareness hypothesis based on a vocabulary strength aspect extension of O’Connor’s (1940) written receptive vocabulary acquisition developmental stage theory. My second contribution is designing and constructing a vocabulary extent (the nexus between vocabulary size (breadth) and strength aspects) test. The test, called the Polysemous Academic Vocabulary Extent Test, utilizes ordered triple rank (OTR) responses and a complementary six-tier incremental scoring guide rubric. An example test item includes a sentence stem with a bold keyword and three options, such as: All the reviews of the movie were positive. positive: a) sure b) good c) enviro / Language Arts

Funkční pohled na slovansko-neslovanskou synonymiku rumunštiny / Slavic and Nonslavic Synonymy in Romanian Language: A Functional Perspective

Krucká, Barbora January 2014 (has links)
(in English): The aim of this paper is to examine the role of Slavic substantive borrowings in Romanian vocabulary. Selected substantive loans are divided into five semantic areas. Analysis of each of them contains a series of synonyms, functional and stylistic inclusion in the Romanian vocabulary, idioms of which is part given lexical unit, and its derivatives. The result is a semantic classification of lexems of Slavic origin in the Romanian vocabulary, their stylistic stratification and position within the synonymic series.

Die französische Synonymie im Spannungsfeld zwischen Paradigmatik und Syntagmatik

Batteux, Martina 03 December 1999 (has links)
The starting point of the discussion about synonymy can be set in France in the 17th century. The problem of synonymy comes into contact with different linguistic disciplines. Synonymy is interpreted as semantic similarity displayed on the level of identical / similar semantic features. Substitutional tests verify this and other hypotheses: The shift of synonymy to the semem level could be verified and the necessary context orientation within the discussion about synonymy could be confirmed. Paradigmatic and syntagmatic aspects have an impact on the choice of synonyms. The interrelation between synonymy and diaphasic variety reveals that synonyms can show stylistic variations. Diatopic and diastratic variations are used as synonyms to common language equivalents only in exceptional circumstances. The interaction of syntax and semantics - both distinction criterions for the choice of synonyms - influence the test persons' decision. Words that provably contain synonymous semems cannot always be identified as synonymous because of collocations.

Folksonomies have emerged as useful tools for online management of digital content. Popular websites as Delicious, Flickr and BibSonomy are now widespread with thousands of users using them daily to upload digital content (e.g., webpages, photos, videos and bibliographic information) and tagging for later retrieval. The lack of semantic relations such as synonym and hypernym/hyponym in the tag space may diminish the ability of users in finding relevant resources. Many research works in the literature employ similarity measures to detect synonymy and to build hierarchies of tags automatically by means of heuristic algorithms. In this thesis, the problems of synonym and subsumption detection between pairs of tags are cast as a pairwise classification problem. From the literature, several similarity measures that are good indicators of synonymy and subsumption were identified, which are used as learning features. Under this setting, there is a severe class imbalance and class overlapping which motivated us to investigate and employ class imbalance techniques to overcome these problems. A comprehensive set of experiments were conducted on two large real-world datasets of BibSonomy and Delicious systems, showing that the proposed approach named CPDST outperforms the best performing heuristic-based baseline in the tasks of synonym and subsumption detection. CPDST is also applied in the context of tag list generation for providing access to additional resources annotated with other semantically related tags. Besides CPDST approach, two algorithms based on WordNet and ConceptNet accesses are proposed for capturing specifically synonyms and hyponyms. The outcome of an evaluative quantitative analysis showed that CPDST approach yields relevant tag lists in relation to the produced ones by the compared methods.

Blízká synonyma v kontrastním pohledu z hlediska korpusové lingvistiky / Contrasting Near Synonyms from the Corpus-Based Perspective

Sikora, Marek January 2018 (has links)
This diploma thesis occupies itself with the subject of near synonymy, concretely with adjectives. On the basis of corpus linguistic methods two pairs of near synonyms have been researched - verschieden/unterschiedlich and bedeutend/bedeutsam. The 15 primary collocators (according to the syntactic position of each adjective) have been examined using the InterCorp parallel corpus methods in order to find out the most frequent Czech equivalence. Návrh rekonstrukce historického Beaufortského alpina v Bečově nad Teplou (Karlovarsko) / Proposal for reconstruction of the historic Beaufort rock garden in the Bečov nad Teplou town (district Karlovy Vary)

ŠPAKOVÁ, Markéta January 2012 (has links)
This thesis will build upon my undergraduate dissertation. It is enriched by the new information about the original historic Beaufort rock garden. It explores the Beaufort rock garden and includes points of view of the experts on its condition today. The following part of the thesis comprises of a proposal for a renewal of the current Bečov botanical garden framework and of a more detailed focus on few selected rocks and their initial planting. The main contribution of this work is an expansion of the total number of the initially grown plants (from 654 to 1228) thanks to the newly found resources and to the writing down all the newly discovered information from the archival research of the original historical documents dated from 1908 to 1937. All the documents were catalogued by the author of the original concept alpina, the head gardener Johann Koditek. What we do know from the original documentation is how the area expanded between the years 1922 - 1927 with the purchase of the surrounding land. It is clear that the expenses for the land were about 18 098,31crowns and for various works, building construction, plants, materials and wages the total sum was 468 336.07 crowns. The exact mounting plans for landscape park were rediscovered (10 plans and inventories in total) and 16 plans and inventories in total of 47 for the rock garden. The chart with the total number of the originally cultivated taxa also consists of the surviving taxa in the area (22 specific herb species + 43 specific tree species and 12 tree genera). The synonymy of the original plants was created for three selected rocks and surveyed their purchase options today. Most of the taxa will return back to the garden, only rock no. 8 will have to be planted differently due to the lack of light on the original plants. Keywords: origin
