Ship Detection and Property Extraction in Radar Images on Hardware

In this work we review the problem of radar imaging satellites' dependency on ground stations to transfer the image data. Since synthetic aperture radar images are very big, only ground stations are equipped to transfer that much data. This is a problem for maritime surveillance as it creates delay between the imaging and processing. We propose a new hardware algorithm that can be used by a satellite to detect ships and extract information about them, and since this information is smaller it can be relayed to reduce the delay significantly. For ship detection, an adaptive thresholding algorithm with exponential model is used. This algorithm was selected as it is the best fit for single-look radar images. For the property calculation, a data accumulating, single-look, connected component labeling algorithm is proposed. This algorithm accumulates data about the connected components, which is then used to calculate the properties of ships using image moments. The combined algorithm was then validated on Radarsat-2 images using Matlab for software and co-simulation for hardware. / Graduate

A Physical Layer Implementation of Reconfigurable Radio

The next generation of wireless communications will demand the use of software radio technology as the basic architecture to support multi-standard, multi-mode and future-proof radio designs. Software-defined radios are configurable devices in which the physical layer can be reprogrammed to support various standards. Field programmable architectures provide a suitable platform to achieve such run-time reconfigurations of the physical layer of the radio. This thesis explores the use of FPGAs in the design of reconfigurable radios. The results presented here demonstrate how FPGAs can be used to provide the flexibility, performance, efficiency and better resource utilization while meeting the speed and area constraints set by a particular design. The partial reconfiguration feature available in the state-of-the art FPGAs has been exploited to implement the baseband physical layer of reconfigurable radio which can be altered to support various modulations schemes for different wireless standards. The design flow for partial reconfiguration along with the implementation results on two different FPGA platforms is presented. The experiments presented in this thesis make use of System Generator for DSP, a productivity tool from Xilinx, to design and to simulate system-level models in a MATLAB/Simulink environment, and to obtain timing and resource utilization results before implementing the design on actual hardware. / Master of Science

<p>The development in electronics increases the demand for good design methods and design tools in the field of electrical engeneering. To improve their design methods Ericsson Microwave Systems AB is interested in using computer tools to create a link between the specification and the implementation of a digital system in a FPGA. </p><p>Xilinx System Generator for DSP is a tool for implementing a model of a digital signalprocessing algorithm in a Xilinx FPGA. To evaluate Xilinx System Generator two testcases has been designed. </p><p>The testcases are selected to represent the FPGA designs made at Ericsson Microwave Systems. The testcases show that Xilinx System Generator can be used to effectivly implement a model made in Simulink in a FPGA from Xilinx. The result of the implementation is comparable to the implementation of VHDL code written by hand. </p><p>The use of tools for implementation of a model in hardware cause change in the design methods used at Ericsson Microwave Systems. The higher level of abstraction introduced by System Generator results in the design decisions made at system level having a higher impact on the final realization.</p>

Kraven på dagens trådlösa förbindelser kommer hela tiden att öka och med detta följer även högre krav på nya produkter som kan tillgodose de ökade kraven. För att göra processen från idé till produkt snabbare krävs enkla verktyg för att snabbt kunna gå från den formulerade standarden till en hårdvaruprototyp. Detta arbete har använt sig av ett av dessa verktyg som idag finns tillgängliga, Xilinx System Generator for DSP 1.1, för att ta fram sändare och mottagare för en del av den trådlösa standarden IEEE 802.11a. Arbetet ger en beskrivning av hur sändare och mottagare är uppbyggda samt även synpunkter på System Generator och beskrivningar av problem som uppstod under arbetet. / The demands on todays wireless communications will continue to increase and with this follows a demand for shorter and shorter development times for the products that are going to satisfy this demand. To accomplish this shorter development time simple tools for going from the formulated standard to a hardware prototype is needed. This work uses one of these tools today available, Xilinx System Generator for DSP 1.1, to develop a transmitter and a reciever for a part of the wireless standard IEEE 802.11a. The work gives a description of the building blocks of the transmitter and the reciever but also some views on System Generator and descriptions of problems that were encountered during the work.

Transmission Modeling and Channel Decoder Implementation Using FPGA for Homplug 1.0 Systems

In this thesis, we introduce a methodology to design and implement a Homeplug1.0 channel decoder that is completely conforming to Homeplug 1.0 specifications definedin HomePlug Power-line Alliance Standard (HPA) including Reed-solomon decoding,Viterbi decoding, punctured ,and de-interleaving technologies. Further, by using MATLAB/Simullink software, Xilinx System Generator, Xilinx Alliance tools, XilinxISE and Modelsim SE software, we build up a transceiver platform to simulate and analyze the performance of the power-line channel decoder based on FPGA hardware implementation. The hardware can be used directly in practical Homeplug 1.0 systems.
