A MOTIVAÇÃO NA AULA DE LÍNGUA INSTRUMENTAL: CRENÇAS DE ALUNOS / MOTIVATION IN THE SPECIFIC PUROPOSES LANGUAGE CLASS: STUDENTS´ BELIEFS

Selvero, Caroline Mitidieri 27 February 2013 (has links)
The objective of this research was to investigate the change of teaching for specific purposes in the students´ believes on teaching/learning of languages and the reflection of these changes in the motivation for learning a new language. The objectives of this study were to map and investigate the beliefs and the motivation before and after the course; verifying if and how the teaching for specific purposes influenced in the beliefs and if the modification of the beliefs influenced in the motivation of the students towards learning Spanish as a foreign language. The Socio-interactionist theory was used as theoretical foundation, as well as teaching for specific purposes, the beliefs and the motivation. The collection of data for the research was carried out during the classes of two editions of the project Espanhol para Viagens, through a pre and post-questionnaire, interviews and observations. The data analysis showed that the beliefs and the motivation of the students influenced and suffered influence of the teaching/learning of Spanish for specific purposes, in such a way that some beliefs were redefined and others came up. In the course of the analysis, some beliefs related to the Spanish language were identified, that consider it an easy language to learn, because of its similarity to Portuguese. At the same time, the students believe that this similarity can cause confusion to the learner. Regarding interaction, the students believe that it favors communication between teacher-learner/learner-learner, which is an essential point for learning Spanish as a foreign language. We consider that the direct contact with Spanish in the classroom and the constant interaction with the teacher were determining aspects for the redefining of the students´ beliefs and for the increase of motivation during the classes of the course.

Nas conclusões, apontamos conseqüências do estudo para cursos de capacitação continuada de professores de espanhol como língua estrangeira / Abstract: In this dissertation we examine the presentation of literary texts (types, amount and ways of exposition) in course books for the teaching of Spanish to brazilian students. We focus on books which are used or officially indicated to be used by Brazilian Senior High Schools. Our study is based on a discursive perspective of language (PECHEUX, 1990; ORLANDI, 1988 & 2008a; 2008b). The analysis is outlined by multidimensional-discursive curriculum criteria and by the perspective that defends non-dichotomy between language and literature in language teaching practices (STERN, 1993, SERRANI, 2005). Our analysis focussed especially on the presence of the theatrical genre in the course books, and we found out that this genre is not present in the corpus we analysed. We discuss the relevance of specific elements of theater as the basis for the development of verbal practices to the teaching of foreign languages in general, and Spanish to brazilians, more specifically. Thus, we discuss topics to the complementation of Spanish teaching materials, through multidimentional-discursive criteria, and we illustrate the proposal especially with dramatic works from Argentine theater. We found out that in order to achieve teaching practices in accordance with a multidimensional-discursive curriculum, the incorporation of the theatrical genre triggers especific mobilizations of the learning-subject. This enables non-stereotyped or decontextualized approaches to the teaching of Spanish. In our conclusions, we point out consequences of this study to in-service training courses for teachers of Spanish as a foreign language / Mestrado / Lingua Estrangeira / Mestre em Linguística Aplicada

This master’s degree thesis presents the results of the research, conducted on the teaching of the verbal complement representation to Spanish speakers, as either direct object or indirect object, a variable linguistic fact in the Brazilian Portuguese (BP) language. The study consists of an analysis of Portuguese as Foreign Language (PFL) educational materials, aimed at verifying how verbal complements are presented and taught, in said materials, and investigating if linguistic variation is contemplated and addressed in this topic. The study is based on the precepts of Sociolinguistics. According to this theory, all languages vary, therefore they are heterogeneous. However, linguistic heterogeneity does not represent chaos, as it is possible to systematize variation. Regarding the educational application of such concepts, we find support in the Educational Sociolinguistics, of Bortoni-Ricardo. The linguist advocates a two-way maternal language teaching, that is, a didactic that starts from the student's dialect, without prejudice, and then broadens their linguistic competence. The methodology used in the development of this study is qualitative, of literature classification. Ten PFL (Portuguese as a Foreign Language) teaching books were analyzed. These books have been published or edited from the year 2000, in order to verify if the linguistic studies influenced the production of materials, regarding the treatment of the verbal complement representation topic. We can see that some progress has already been made in the elaboration of most of the analyzed books, which already deal with linguistic variation in some way. However, we have shown that it is still necessary to give importance to this issue and not only address it in notes and warnings, without the indispensable clarification of the concept of linguistic adequacy. It is not enough to present the variants, it is necessary to deepen the discussion on the subject, according to the need of the student body. With respect to the completion of the verbal complement, this research proved that there is still a predominance of a normative view, since the great majority only mentions the standard variant (clitics), leaving aside the most used variant for Brazilians (null object), although almost all materials are aimed to teach spoken language

Implementar actividades de autoevaluación en la enseñanza de español como lengua extranjera : Conocimientos y actitudes de los profesores suecos / Implementing self-assessment activities in teaching of Spanish as a foreign language : Swedish teachers' knowledge and attitudes

Kröger, Iina January 2018 (has links)
This study investigates Swedish secondary and upper secondary school teachers' knowledge and attitudes with respect to implementing self-assessment activities in teaching of Spanish as a foreign language. The purpose of the study has been to get an overview of the state of the implementation of self-assessment in Swedish schools. In order to achieve this objective, a survey method has been used. The results of this study, like the findings of previous studies, indicate that there is a deficiency in the implementation of self-assessment in teaching. Additionally, the results suggest some possible explanations for this deficiency. However, in order to be able to draw a definite conclusion regarding the matter, more detailed information and further studies would be needed.

The Reading Together™ cross-age tutoring program and its effects on the English language proficiency and reading achievement of English language learners.

Jennings, Cheryl 12 1900 (has links)
This dissertation provides research and data based on a study of cross-age tutoring and its effects on English language proficiency and English reading achievement of English language learners. The subjects for the study included native Spanish-speakers enrolled in third-grade bilingual classrooms in four elementary schools. The research study focused on the implementation of Reading Together™, a cross-age tutoring program published by The Learning Together Company. The 30-session tutoring program is designed to help English-speaking students progress from decoding words to reading with fluency and comprehension through older students tutoring younger students in a one-to-one setting. This highly structured program is used to provide supplemental instruction to second and/or third-grade students. This study utilized a quantitative approach to compare the results of English language learners who participated in the Reading Together cross-age tutoring program and English language learners who did not participate in the program. A quasi-experimental design was used in the research study. In this design, the treatment group and the control group were selected using specific criteria. Both groups took a pretest and posttest, but only the treatment group received the intervention. The study also determined if there was a relationship between initial language levels and reading gains. The study concluded the following: 1. Cross-age tutoring might possibly be an effective instructional strategy to assist English language learners in improving their oral language proficiency in English. 2. Even though third-grade participants in the cross-age tutoring program did not demonstrate significantly different reading levels from students not participating in the program, cross-age tutoring may still be an instructional strategy to be used with English language learners to assist them in second language reading. 3. Students' initial English oral language proficiency level does correlate to the students' English reading level.

O futuro é agora: possíveis caminhos para a formação de professores de espanhol como língua estrangeira para crianças / The future is now: possible paths for teacher training in Spanish as a foreign language for children.

Simone Rinaldi 25 April 2011 (has links)
In this doctoral study we attempted to continue with our previous research, in Masters\' level, in which we presented a portrait of teacher training in Spanish as a foreign language for children. Now, we decided to provide guidelines for initial or continuing training of teachers of Spanish who work or want to work with students from the first years of elementary school. Our history began through literature review, often searching among references of courses taken, and many other times chosen in libraries shelves, real and virtual bookstores. Our readings, analysis and reflections began in the area of law concerning the teaching of foreign language (São Paulo State Law 1.750 of 8 December 1920; Federal Decree 1.164, 1939; LDBEN, 1996; Resolution CNE/CEB 7/2010; PCN, 1998; RCNEI, 1998), they passed by the concepts and fundamentals of the most renowned thinkers in education, especially theorists related to children development (BROFENBRENNER, 1996; BRUNER, 1978, 2006; FREUD, 2010; GESELL, 2002; PIAGET, 1967, 1972; SKINNER, 1970, 1974; VYGOTSKY, 2002, 2005), to language acquisition (CHOMSKY, 1959 apud BARALO, 2004; PIAGET, 1967, 1972; TOMASELLO, 2003; VYGOTSKY, 2002, 2005, for example), to alphabetization and literacy (ABUD, 1987; FERREIRO E TEBEROSKY, 1999; KATO, 1998; KLEIMAN, 2004) and, finally, to the acquisition of foreign language (KRASHEN, 1995; PAIVA in BRUNO, 2005). We continued our research through the observation and analysis of classes given by us in an extension course, as well as teachers who already have taught Spanish to children and an intern who was responsible for the short course in Spanish for children during her graduation course. We followed by interviewing teachers, the coordinator of one of the schools visited, the parents and guardians of students who studied Spanish in one of these regular schools and some students. We concluded our research with the outmost certainty that the path that we pointed out is the most appropriate: there really is the necessity and feasibility of establishing a discipline to the graduation course of Spanish, supported by the Resolution CNE/CEB nº 7/2010 and / or a continuing education course that addresses the knowledge, skills and abilities needed by teachers of Spanish who want to teach the language to children. We hope that the general guidelines which we consider indispensable in organizing and proposing a course or discipline with the mentioned features, included in this study, are one of the contributions of our research into the area of teaching and learning of foreign languages for children.

Writing inside the caja: Constructing pasos in English composition studies

Preciado, Linda Joyce 01 January 2004 (has links)
In this thesis, I examine the resistance, privileges, and costs of Chicana textual identity issues in an academic arena that, by design, fragments voice and dictates choice. The scarcity in research of Chicana identity through mixed-language writing in composition depicts an existing chasm between academic demographics and university sentiments. Educational institutions that neglect to investigate, engage, and participate in textual identity perpetuate accepted pensamiento. Therefore, insight to Chicana thought, culture, and educational experiences may assist and inform the teaching dominant culture, not to separate, but to conjoin information with experience for those seeking diversity.

Movie in the teaching of ELE in the Swedish upper secondary school. : Films of Almodóvar as a didactic tool to treat cultural elements and basic values.

Brodalka, Joanna January 2018 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to explore and analyse if films, as well as being a possible tool to develop linguistic skills of the students of the upper secondary school, can be the basis to introduce and develop cultural elements and aspects related to the students’ values. A survey was responded by 36 teachers of the Swedish upper secondary school in order to study how film in general, and Pedro Almodóvar’s in particular, is used in the teaching of ELE in order to treat basic values and cultural content. The results show that teachers use film to talk about culture and some basic values, but in general the films are not used in Spanish classes very often.
