Spiritualita poustevnic v Ancrene Wisse a Zjevení božské lásky Juliany z Norwiche / Female anchoritic spirituality in Ancrene Wisse and Revelations of Divine Love of Julian of Norwich

Kecsöová, Dominika January 2021 (has links)
This MA thesis explores one of the few religious vocations available to medieval women, that of an anchoress. Anchoresses, or recluses, exchanged their life in the world for a cell adjacent to a church, in which they spent the rest of their lives, keeping a daily schedule of prayers and meditations. As an aid in their daily life, several "rules" or "guides" were produced - one of them is Ancrene Wisse. This guide contains practical advice on running the anchorhold, as well as passages concerning spirituality. As a normative text written by a male author, it was compared with another text concerning spirituality, this time written by an anchoress -Julian of Norwich. Julian likely became an anchoress after receiving a series of visions when laying seriously ill; she later recorded these visions for profit of her fellow Christians. Both texts were analysed in connection to anchoritic spirituality and revealed several similarities - for instance, both tend to use the basic metaphors of enclosure as body, Christ as a mother, or Christ as a king or a knight. The image of spirituality that emerges from the two texts is often paradoxical, due to the incommunicability of the Divine, which makes both the anonymous author of the Ancrene Wisse and Julian utilise images with opposite meanings and often shift...

Blanchet, Olivier 09 1900 (has links)
The current project aims to understand the role played by the “unspeakable” in language and what form—at a fundamental level—does the violence perpetrated towards it take by following the works of Emmanuel Levinas and Ludwig Wittgenstein. Then, the analysis of linguistic violence continues by examining the different manifestations of this wrong and their conditions of possibility or more precisely, by scrutinizing certain historical incidences of such a reproduction of violence by proposing a close reading of Jean-François Lyotard’s Le Différend (1983). Finally, an attempt will be made at establishing the conditions necessary for the construction of a discursive safe-space opening the possibility of a non-violent witnessing and testimony oriented towards the recognition of the experience of the once silenced survivor.

Sexuální obtěžování v médiích na příkladu americké televizní stanice Fox News / Sexual harassment in the media on the example of the American television channel Fox News

Kytková, Barbara January 2022 (has links)
The thesis Sexual Harassment in the Media on the Example of American Television Fox News aims to describe the sexual harassment affair in the American television company Fox News and compare it with similar cases in other American media organizations. The 2016 case led to the dismissal of Roger Ailes, the company's longtime director, and set off a wave of accusations of sexual harassment in other media, leading to the discrediting of several moderators and prominent figures in the American media. The main goal is to find out whether sexual harassment is a known, systemic phenomenon in America or not. Sexual harassment is also associated with the world-wide anti-sexual harassment movement Me Too, which emerged shortly after the Ailes scandal broke out. Therefore, I want to refute or confirm the hypothesis whether most cases of sexual harassment in the media began to appear only after Me Too became a world-famous movement. The main research method is a search of selected media, such as the New York Times, which has dealt extensively with the case. One of the main results should also be to find out whether harassment has always led to the release of the culprit and whether the victims have received apology or compensation from the media.

Doppelt hören: Eine populäre Chanson im Spiegel ihrer Bearbeitungen

Roth, Markus 27 October 2023 (has links)
The present article combines both cultural-historical and analytical reflections on »art-song reworking« of the late fifteenth century. Using the example of several reworkings of Malheur me bat – from Agricola, Josquin, and Obrecht – references are discussed primarily from the point of view of the content. In an imaginary dialog with »expert listeners« of the past, the question is raised, in which manner the composer of the respective chanson masses either highlighted, weakened or exaggerated specific idiosyncrasies of the underlying original.

”Desire followed by its instant antidote — fear.” : En fenomenologisk studie av begär och skam i Call Me by Your Name av André Aciman och Swimming in the dark av Tomasz Jedrowski

Randeblad, Joel January 2023 (has links)
This essay analyses Call Me by Your Name by André Aciman and Swimming in the Dark by Tomasz Jedrowski through a phenomenological lens. Through the theoretical framework, mainly consisting of Sara Ahmed’s The Cultural Politics of Emotion and Queer Phenomenology, I discuss how feelings such as desire and shame work through the subject and influence its relationship with their surroundings. The analysis concludes that the emotion of shame is an isolating feeling, causing the subject to shield themselves from their surroundings. At the same time shame is forgotten in its own temporality, whereas the emotion itself is mistaken as permanent by the subject in the feeling state. On the other hand, the forbidden desire feels temporary and like something that could be expelled from the body. Furthermore, I discuss how desire affects the relationship between subject and object, especially through the ways that desire complicates the hierarchal division between the two. I further posit how desire affects boundaries between bodies and how the forbidden desire creates the will to penetrate boundaries while at the same time maintaining them. Through the combination of shame and desire the subject is limited in their worldview, where the desire can feel impossible to navigate through the “life-lines” that Ahmed theorizes because of the shame that follows. The essay concludes that the relationship between shame and desire affects the relationship between subject and object mainly through the internalization of societal norms.

Machine learning for the prediction of duplex stainless steel mechanical properties : Hardness evolution under low temperature aging

Giard, Baptiste, Karlsson, Sofia January 2021 (has links)
Duplex stainless steels, DSS are stainless steels that consist of the two phases austenite and ferrite.  The DSS have superb properties and are widely used in industries such as nuclear power and in pressure vessels, pipes and in pipelines.  The use of DSS are limited due to embrittlement which occurs at temperatures from 250 to 550 oC. This imposes a general limited service temperature of 250 oC. The mechanism mainly responsible for the embrittlement is a phase separation occurring in the ferrite phase. Furthermore, there is a direct link between the phase separation and the mechanical properties:  the ferrite hardness increases whereas the toughness decreases under low temperature aging.  In this thesis, the low-temperature embrittlement of duplex stainless  steels  was  studied  through  machine learning  modelling  and  experimental hardness-  and  microscopy measurements.   The  resulting  model  describes  the  data with an accuracy, R-squared = 0.94.  In combination with the experimental results, nickel  was identified  as  an  important  parameter  for  the  hardness  evolution.   This work aims to provide a fundamental study for understanding the importance of alloying elements on the phase separation in DSS, and provides a new methodology via a combination of machine learning and key experiments for the material design. / EIT RawMaterial Project ENDUREIT

Implementation of Video-based Person Tracking in a Drone System / Implementation av videobaserad personspårning i ett drönarsystem

Nordberg, Emil, Sjödahl, Lucas January 2021 (has links)
Technological instruments are used in sports to record and analyze data of performing athletes, in order to improve techniques and increase competitiveness. A method to allow for recording of data of a moving subject is by usage of a depth camera mounted on a drone that can track and follow a subject. The objective was to develop a drone system that was capable of autonomous operation based on follow-me mode. The original prototype lacked required hardware for reliable orientation in environments with varying air-pressure, and software for a follow-me mode-system. Height above ground was measured using a downward facing depth sensor and a 3D image of the subject was generated by a depth camera. The data was then used by the drone to navigate through the environment. Overall performance of the height adjustment would be sufficient to allow for autonomous operation according to test results. Testing of the follow-me mode showed that the current configuration was not capable of retaining a sufficiently consistent position relative to the subject, hence high video quality was not achieved. However, it gave a positive indication that autonomous operation based on a depth camera is possible. The concept has a high potential and if the system would be further developed it could allow athletes to record and analyze data in order to improve techniques and increase competitiveness.

Nonlinear Effects in Contactless Ultrasound Energy Transfer Systems

Meesala, Vamsi Chandra 05 January 2021 (has links)
Ultrasound acoustic energy transfer (UAET) is an emerging contactless technology that offers the capability to safely and efficiently power sensors and devices while eliminating the need to replace batteries, which is of interest in many applications. It has been proposed to recharge and communicate with implanted medical devices, thereby eliminating the need for invasive and expensive surgery and also to charge sensors inside enclosed metal containers typically found in automobiles, nuclear power plants, space stations, and aircraft engines. In UAET, energy is transferred through the reception of acoustic waves by a piezoelectric receiver that converts the energy of acoustic waves to electrical voltage. It has been shown that UAET outperforms the conventional CET technologies that use electromagnetic waves to transfer energy, including inductive coupling and capacitative coupling. To date, the majority of research on UAET systems has been limited to modeling and proof-of-concept experiments, mostly in the linear regime, i.e., under small levels of acoustic pressure that result in small amplitude longitudinal vibrations and linearized piezoelectricity. Moreover, existing models are based on the "piston-like" deformation assumption of the transmitter and receiver, which is only accurate for thin disks and does not accurately account for radiation effects. The linear models neglect nonlinear effects associated with the nonlinear acoustic wave propagation as well as the receiver's electroelastic nonlinearities on the energy transfer characteristics, which become significant at high source strengths. In this dissertation, we present experimentally-validated analytical and numerical multiphysics modeling approaches aimed at filling a knowledge gap in terms of considering resonant acoustic-piezoelectric structure interactions and nonlinear effects associated with high excitation levels in UAET systems. In particular, we develop a reduced-order model that can accurately account for the radiation effects and validate it by performing experiments on four piezoelectric disks with different aspect ratios. Next, we study the role of individual sources of nonlinearity on the output power characteristics. First, we consider the effects of electroelastic nonlinearities. We show that these nonlinearities can shift the optimum load resistance when the acoustic medium is fluid. Next, we consider the nonlinear wave propagation and note that the shock formation is associated with the dissipation of energy, and as such, shock formation distance is an essential design parameter for high-intensity UAET systems. We then present an analytical approach capable of predicting the shock formation distance and validate it by comparing its prediction with finite element simulations and experimental results published in the literature. Finally, we experimentally investigate the effects of both the nonlinearity sources on the output power characteristics of the UAET system by considering a high intensity focused ultrasound source and a piezoelectric disk receiver. We determine that the system's efficiency decreases, and the maximum voltage output position drifts towards the source as the source strength is increased. / Doctor of Philosophy / Advancements in electronics that underpinned the development of low power sensors and devices have transformed many fields. For instance, it has led to the innovation of implanted medical devices (IMDs) such as pacemakers and neurostimulators that perform life-saving functions. They also find applications in condition monitoring and wireless sensing in nuclear power plants, space stations, automobiles and aircraft engines, where the sensors are enclosed within sealed metal containers, vacuum/pressure vessels or located in a position isolated from the operator by metal walls. In all these applications, it is desired to communicate with and recharge the sensors wirelessly. Such a mechanism can eliminate the need for invasive and expensive surgeries to replace batteries of IMDs and preserve the structural integrity of metal containers by eliminating the need for feed through wires. It has been shown that ultrasound acoustic energy transfer (UAET) outperforms conventional wireless power transfer techniques. However, existing models are based on several assumptions that limit their potential and do not account for effects that become dominant when a higher output power is desired. In this dissertation, we present experimentally validated numerical and theoretical investigations to fill those knowledge gaps. We also provide crucial design recommendations based on our findings for the efficient implementation of UAET technology.
