The Measurement Of Motivation: Examining The Measurement Properties Of The Motivation Assessment System

The current study investigated the Pritchard-Ashwood (P-A) Theory of Motivation (Pritchard & Ashwood, 2008) by examining a measure of P-A Theory labeled the Motivation Assessment System (MAS). P-A Theory combines prior motivation theories such as expectancy theory, goal setting theory, justice theory, and needs theory and consolidates them into one integrated theory of motivation. In essence, P-A theory posits that one’s motivation is determined by four perceptions, including the extent to which one believes: (a) his/her actions will lead to results, (b) his/her results will lead to positive evaluations, (c) his/her evaluations will lead to positive outcomes, and (d) his/her outcomes will satisfy his/her needs. The MAS is designed to capture P-A Theory by assessing these four perceptions, and this dissertation examined tenets of P-A Theory by investigating the measurement properties of the MAS via confirmatory factor analysis. Findings showed that the model set forth by P-A Theory had the best fit compared to the other competing models when analyzing MAS data, suggesting the MAS is an appropriate measure of P-A Theory. This research should help to bridge the gap between motivation theory and practice by providing initial evidence of support for a practical measure that captures the full spectrum of employee motivation as set forth in P-A Theory. Recommendations for future research using the MAS to study motivation are suggested.

Factors influencing nursing turnover in selected private hospitals in England

The study investigated factors influencing nursing turnover in selected private hospitals in England as the United Kingdom recruited 57 136 nurses from non-European countries from 1998 till 2003. Herzberg's Theory of Motivation was used to contextualise the research results obtained from 85 completed questionnaires. In terms of Herzberg's Theory of Motivation the intrinsic factors (motivators) that could influence nurses' turnover rates were nurses' dissatisfaction with irregular promotions, lack of recognition by doctors, and nurses' lack of autonomy. The extrinsic (hygiene) factors included dissatisfaction with their salaries, and marked dissatisfaction with organization and administration policies and nurses' inability to access information about patient care and about the management of their units. Nurses' turnover rates might be reduced if promotion policies could be consistent, doctors would value nurses' work and if nurses could be more autonomous. Enhanced communication about policies and about accessing information, as well as improved salaries,could contribute to reduced turnover rates among nurses. / Health Studies / M. A. (Public Health)

Att leva ensam med en demenssjukdom : En litteraturöversikt / To live alone with dementia : A literature review

Sammanfattning Bakgrund: Idag lever ca 158 000 personer med en demenssjukdom i Sverige och antalet ökar varje år. 92 000 av dessa bor hemma och enligt tidigare forskning bor 35 000 ensamma. Forskning visar att informellt stöd är viktigt för personen med en demenssjukdom. Att leva utan ett informellt stöd kan då vara svårt och det finns lite kunskap om detta. Syfte: Syftet med översikten var att undersöka upplevelsen av att leva ensam med en demenssjukdom. Metod: En litteraturöversikt av kvalitativa artiklar sammanställdes med en induktiv ansats. Data samlades in i databaserna Cinahl, Medline samt PsycInfo. Åtta artiklar med kvalitativ metod inkluderades i resultatet. Dataanalysen skedde enligt Fribergs 5-stegsmodell. Resultat: Fyra huvudteman identifierades i litteraturöversikten: ensamhet, begränsningar, meningsfullhet samt rädsla. Slutsats: Personer som lever ensamma med en demenssjukdom upplever sin tillvaro på liknande sätt som personer med en demenssjukdom som har en informell vårdare i hemmet. En markant skillnad är upplevelsen av ensamhet som är stor hos de flesta personer som lever ensamma med en demenssjukdom, men upplevelserna skiljer sig individer emellan. / Summary Background: Today, around 158 000 people with dementia lives in Sweden, the number is increasing every year. 92 000 people live at home and according to previous research 35 000 live alone. Research shows that informal support is important for the person with dementia. Living without informal support can then be difficult and there is little knowledge about this. Aim: The aim of the literature review was to investigate the experience of living alone with dementia. Method: A literature review of qualitative articles was compiled with an inductive approach. Data was collected in the databases Cinahl, Medline and PsycInfo. Eight articles with qualitative method were included in the result. Data analysis was conducted according to Friberg's 5-step model. Result: Four main themes were identified in the literature review: loneliness, limitations, meaningfulness, and fear. Conclusion: Individuals living alone with dementia have similar experiences as those with dementia who have an informal caretaker at home. A significant difference is the perception of loneliness that is great among most people living alone with dementia, but the experiences differ between individuals.

Prof. Jaroslav Kalous, Ph.D. ABSTRACT: The final thesis is focused on the analysis of the process of motivation of teachers in terms of nursery schools. The first part discusses the theoretical forms of motivation and motivational factors influencing motivation of teachers. The second part is focused on the detailed principles of motivation for directors of nursery school themselves and the role of directors in the process of motivation of teachers. The third part analyzes the current state of motivation in nursery schools through meta-analysis of literature dealing with this issue in the past dealt with. In the end of the empirical part of the thesis, the influence of different positive and negative motivation factors are discussed, the incentive system is created for teachers in nursery schools and the recommendations for the management of schools is formulated, how to effectively motivate their subordinates and what to avoid. The work deals with issue of workers motivation on projects managed by method of Theory of constraints (TOC) which improves efficiency of projects. But this management method requires completely different manner of project workers consideration which can be unnatural for many people. This can cause same problems that in extreme cases may involve unsuccessful implementation of TOC. This is the reason why importance of motivation rapidly increases in connection with deployment and sustainment of Critical Chain Project Management. Main goals of this work are to describe most important differences between TOC and original methods of project management, to indentify impact of TOC on project workers, and (in relationship with previous findings) to evaluate existing theories of motivation and make a proposal of some measures for people motivation which are based on these theories.

A Choice in Reading : A Study of Student Motivation for Studying English Literature in Upper Secondary Schools in Sweden

This essay aims to examine the attitudes and motivation toward literary studies in English in upper secondary school students as well as to determine which tools practicing teachers can apply to increase their students’ language learning motivation within literature teaching in the Swedish curriculum. The questions that this study set out to answer was: How do students rate their ability to succeed in different tasks relating to English literary education? How can teachers in Sweden design their lessons in English literature to motivate their students? Which are some of the best ways to teach literature to students from a motivational standpoint? The primary theories used in this study are; self-efficacy theory and theories regarding intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. This study used a qualitative method to examine the students’ attitudes towards reading English literature in schools. The research tool used is a questionnaire with both general questions regarding literature in addition to questions about how the students would rate their chance to succeed with a task relating to literary studies. This study found that one of the primary methods that teachers should apply when teaching literature to EFL students was giving the students a choice in reading material as well as using age-appropriate material. Using shorter texts such as short stories and extracts from novels was also a method that the students’ preferred. This study showed that using standardized testing is the least preferred examination method to use when assessing the students. On the other hand, the preferred examination methods were writing book reports, essays or using group discussions or answering study questions. Furthermore, it is important for the teacher to know the group and plan accordingly and listen to the students and give them a choice in what they read and how to assess them at the end of the literary module to give the students a greater chance of success.

Förmågan att kunna kommunicera är av yttersta vikt för att en organisation ska vara fungerande. Det är också nödvändigt för en organisation att kunna förändra sig för att förbli effektiv. Motivation är det som sätter tankar i handling och därför bör det vara en viktig aspekt när det kommer till internkommunikation i stora organisationer som genomgår förändringar.      Uppsatsen baseras på en fallstudie av en organisationsförändring vid Karlstads universitet som genomfördes 1 januari 2013, där kvalitativa intervjuer använts som metod. Undersökningen gjordes under november och december 2012 då förändringsprocessen var i sitt slutskede. Intervjuer utfördes med både informanter och respondenter anställda vid Karlstads universitet.   Syftet med uppsatsen är att undersöka internkommunikationens betydelse för hur medarbetare motiveras till en organisationsförändring. Utifrån syftet har tre frågeställningar formulerats: (1) Hur önskar medarbetare vid Karlstads universitet att information kommuniceras internt vid en organisationsförändring? (2) Överensstämmer medarbetares och implementeringsgruppen vid Karlstads universitets uppfattningar om hur information om en organisationsförändring bör kommuniceras? (3) Hur anser medarbetare vid Karlstads universitet att motivation skapas inför en organisationsförändring genom internkommunikation?   Resultatet från de intervjuer som genomförts har analyserats utifrån teorier som till exempel transmissionsmodellen, goal setting teorin och McLuhans teori om kanalval.  Denna undersökning visar att den närmsta chefen ses som den viktigaste informationskanalen. Det kommer även fram att medarbetarna tycker det är viktigt att organisationen använder sig av många olika kanaler när de kommunicerar och att muntlig kommunikation ses som en nödvändighet. Resultatet visar även att intern- och externkommunikation bör ses som lika betydelsefulla för en organisation och därför borde lika mycket energi och resurser läggas på de två. Uppsatsen presenterar utifrån dessa resultat en tankemodell på hur organisationer kan se på kommunikationsprocessen kring en organisationsförändring. / The ability to communicate is of utmost importance for an organization to be functional. It is also important for an organization to be able to change in order to stay effective. Motivation is what puts thoughts in to actions and should therefore be an important part of the internal communication in large organizations going through changes.   This paper is based on a case study of an organizational change at Karlstad University that took place the 1st of January 2013. The method used in this case study was qualitative interviews. The study took place during November and December 2012 when the process of change was coming to an end. The interviews was conducted with both informants and respondents employed at Karlstad University.   The aim of this study is to examine internal communications importance in motivating employees during an organizational change. There is also three questions of issue that has been examined further: (1) How do employees at Karlstad University wish that information gets communicated internaly in the organization during an organizational change? (2) Do employees and managers at Karlstad University share ideas of how information about the change at hand should be communicated during an organizational change? (3) How do employees at Karlstad University consider that motivation gets created through internal communication facing an organizational change?   The result from the interviews was analyzed through theories such as the transmission model, McLuhan’s theory about mediums and the goal setting theory. This study shows that the immediate supervisor is the most important channel for communication. It also shows that employees considers it important that the organization communicates through a variety of channels and that oral communication is a necessity. The result also shows that internal and external communication should be seen as equally important for the organization. And equal amounts of energy and money should be spent on both internal and external communication. The paper presents a conceptual model of how organizations should look at the communication process surrounding an organizational change. The model is based on the results of the study.

Revue critique des arguments en faveur et à l'encontre de la théorie humienne de la motivation

Bien qu'elle constitue toujours l'orthodoxie en philosophie de l'esprit, la théorie humienne de la motivation (selon laquelle la motivation origine toujours d'un désir et jamais d'une croyance seule) a été plusieurs fois critiquée au cours des dernières décennies. Je passe ici en revue les principaux arguments avancés à la fois pour appuyer et rejeter cette théorie. Du côté humien, j'examine l'argument des croyances identiques, l'argument de la direction d'ajustement et l'argument de l'uniformité théorique. Du côté anti-humien, l'objection voulant que la notion de direction d'ajustement soit circulairement caractérisée, l'objection des croyances irrationnelles et l'objection selon laquelle certains états mentaux présenteraient deux directions d'ajustement. Je conclus qu'aucune de ces objections ne devrait nous conduire à rejeter la théorie humienne, mais aussi que cette dernière trouve son principal appui du côté des considérations relatives à l'uniformité théorique et non du côté de l'argument de la direction d'ajustement comme le pensent plusieurs. / Although remaining orthodoxy in philosophy of mind, the humean theory of motivation (according to which motivation always comes from a desire, never from a belief alone) has often been critized over the last decades. Here I review the main arguments put forward both to support and reject this theory. On the humean side, I examine the argument from identical beliefs, the direction of fit argument and the argument from theoretical uniformity. On the anti-humean side, the objection that direction of fit caracterizations are circular, the objection from irrational beliefs and the objection according to which there could be mental states with two direction of fit. I conclude that none of these objections should lead us to reject the humean theory, but also that this one finds its main support in theoretical unifomity considerations and not in the direction on fit argument as many think.

Uppfattningar om motivation hos deltagare i SPIRA-projektet på Medlefors folkhögskola

Syftet med studien var att undersöka SPIRA-projektets deltagares uppfattningar om motivation och uppfattningar om projektets eventuella påverkan på motivationen. Samt uppfattningar hos några tidigare deltagare i projektet. SPIRA-projektets syfte är att stärka kompetensen hos sina deltagare och målgruppen är individer som varit arbetslösa i ett år eller mer, alternativt sjukskrivna i minst sex månader. Tidigare forskning inom arbetslöshet och motivation tyder på att de individer som drivs av en motivation med en hög grad autonomi har en större chans att vara lyckosamma. De anses även vara mer ihärdiga i sitt arbetssökande och har ett högre välmående än de som drivs av motivation med en låg grad autonomi. Däremot har ingen liknande undersökning gjorts inom denna grupp. Metoden i studien var semi-strukturerad enkät med öppna frågor och enkäten delades ut till 20 nuvarande deltagare och 15 tidigare deltagare, varav 20 nuvarande och 5 tidigare svarade. Bearbetningen av empirin genomfördes med inspiration av Self-Determination Theory och dess underteori, Organismic Integration Theory (OIT), där det finns olika grader av motivation. Slutsatserna i studien är att respondenterna uppfattar motivation som någonting med en hög grad autonomi. De drivs även överlag av en motivation med en hög grad av autonomi, men det är ofta ett förväntat yttre värde som ligger bakom motivationen. Vidare är även respondenterna generellt nöjda med projektets utformning och de främjande faktorerna inom projektet kännetecknas av en hög grad autonomi. Samtidigt som de hämmande faktorerna präglas av en låg grad av autonomi.
