Dynamic Loading of Substation Distribution Transformers: An Application for use in a Production Grade Environment

January 2013 (has links)
abstract: Recent trends in the electric power industry have led to more attention to optimal operation of power transformers. In a deregulated environment, optimal operation means minimizing the maintenance and extending the life of this critical and costly equipment for the purpose of maximizing profits. Optimal utilization of a transformer can be achieved through the use of dynamic loading. A benefit of dynamic loading is that it allows better utilization of the transformer capacity, thus increasing the flexibility and reliability of the power system. This document presents the progress on a software application which can estimate the maximum time-varying loading capability of transformers. This information can be used to load devices closer to their limits without exceeding the manufacturer specified operating limits. The maximally efficient dynamic loading of transformers requires a model that can accurately predict both top-oil temperatures (TOTs) and hottest-spot temperatures (HSTs). In the previous work, two kinds of thermal TOT and HST models have been studied and used in the application: the IEEE TOT/HST models and the ASU TOT/HST models. And, several metrics have been applied to evaluate the model acceptability and determine the most appropriate models for using in the dynamic loading calculations. In this work, an investigation to improve the existing transformer thermal models performance is presented. Some factors that may affect the model performance such as improper fan status and the error caused by the poor performance of IEEE models are discussed. Additional methods to determine the reliability of transformer thermal models using metrics such as time constant and the model parameters are also provided. A new production grade application for real-time dynamic loading operating purpose is introduced. This application is developed by using an existing planning application, TTeMP, as a start point, which is designed for the dispatchers and load specialists. To overcome the limitations of TTeMP, the new application can perform dynamic loading under emergency conditions, such as loss-of transformer loading. It also has the capability to determine the emergency rating of the transformers for a real-time estimation. / Dissertation/Thesis / M.S. Electrical Engineering 2013

Goal orientation, the growth mindset and coping strategies for success and failure in competitive sport

Potgieter, Roelof Daniel 12 December 2011 (has links)
In today’s sport careers there is no room for error. This is why athletes should be “on top of their game” every time they compete. It is very important for athletes to keep their emotions under control, because emotions can sometimes determine success or failure. But more important is how the athlete reacts to success and failure. Therefore, in this study the aim was to establish an athlete’s reaction to success and failure. An athlete should have the ability or strategy to handle success and failure. According to this statement, it underlines the importance of the current study. The fact that there are limited resources in this field accentuates the need for this study. Each athlete experiences and reacts to success or failure differently. An athlete can use success or failure as a facilitator or as a debilitator. If an athlete sees success or failure as a facilitator, he or she will use success or failure as a method to enhance his or her performance. But if an athlete sees success and failure as a debilitator, it means that the athlete does not have the ability or skills to use success or failure to his or her advantage. It seems that elite athletes may have the skills or ability to use success and failure as a facilitator and not as a debilitator owing to the fact that in the elite arena there is no place for errors. In this study, the researcher examines how elite and beginner athlete’s handle success and failure and what their reaction is towards success and failure. Each athlete has a unique way to develop his or her talents. Athletes who believe that they are born with limited talent or ability and cannot improve this talent by more practice or more effort can be classified as having a static mindset. When athletes believe that they can improve their talent or ability, they could be seen as athletes with a growth mindset. This study made use of a combination of convenient and random sampling. Each athlete had to comply with the criterium to be part of the study. The criterium stipulated that each athlete should be an active participant in sport either at school-, provincial-, national- or international level. To determine what goal orientation each athlete had, they were asked to fill out the task- and ego orientation in sport questionnaire. To determine what their reactions to success and failure were, athletes completed an assessment of success and failure questionnaire that was self-developed by the present researcher Roelie Potgieter and his study leader professor Ben Steyn. The self-theory questionnaire that was completed by the athletes determined whether an athlete was in the fixed or growth mindset. Using the results determined through the questionnaires that were completed by the athletes, correlations could be made to motivate the study. Task orientation and the growth mindset is more predominant than ego orientation and the fixed mindset. Athletes in general react more constructively towards success and failure. A strong correlation was found between task orientation and positive reaction to success and failure. Partial correlation between ego orientation and positive reaction to success was found. Positive relations were discovered between task orientation and the growth mindset, as well as ego orientation and the fixed mindset. ‘n Atleet kan sukses of mislukking gebruik as ‘n fasiliteerder of as ‘n debiliteerder. / Dissertation (MA)--University of Pretoria, 2011. / Biokinetics, Sport and Leisure Sciences / unrestricted

Dallaire, Frédérick 03 1900 (has links)
The pixelated Medipix detectors have been developed by the Medipix Collaboration to perform real-time imaging. The semiconducting chip is divided into 65536 pixels of $55\times 55\um^2$ for a total active area of nearly $2\cm^2$. Because of their sensitivity to all kinds of particles, sixteen Medipix2 detectors (ATLAS-MPX) have been placed in the ATLAS detector and its cavern to measure for the radiation produced by the head-on proton collisions produced at the LHC. At the next ATLAS upgrade, the ATLAS-MPX network will be extended to include the Timepix detectors, the latest version that allows one to measure the total energy deposited in the semiconductor. To improve data analysis, a Geant4 simulation project of a Timepix detector was initiated by John Id\'arraga at the Université de Montréal. In the framework of the ATLAS experiment, this simulation could be used with Athena, the ATLAS analysis software, and the full ATLAS simulation. Due to their repulsivity, the charge carriers created by an incoming particle in the pixelated detector are spread over the surrounding pixels causing a charge sharing effect. An effective model has been developed to reproduce this effect without resolving the charge drift's differential equation. This model and the \textit{time-over-threshold} mode of the Timepix have been included in the simulation to reproduce the tracks left by the striking particles. First, one had to individually calibrate each pixel of the device with $\Am$ and $\Ba$ sources. The simulation's validation has been performed with low energy protons and $\alpha$ particles delivered by the van de Graaff Tandem at the Laboratoire René-J.-A.-Lévesque of the Université de Montréal.

Skyfallens hot mot Mälarens ekosystem / The effects of high precipitation on phosphorus transport in three tributaries to Lake Mälaren, Sweden

Immo, Nelly January 2024 (has links)
Healthy ecosystems provide us with vital resources and services – ecosystem services such as flood protection. In the North Baltic Sea Water District, to which Lake Mälaren belongs, the status of that ecosystem service is poor, largely as a result of extensive draining in the area leading to a lack of floodplains. During periods of torrential rain, the area around Lake Mälaren and its tributaries is therefore at risk to be affected by floods that cause damage to food production, infrastructure and the environment. Eutrophication is already a problem in the area and large additions of phosphorus as a result of flooded agricultural land can cause large algal blooms and degraded habitat for aquatic organisms. During August and September 2023, unusually large amounts of rain fell over central Sweden, which increased the flow of water in Lake Mälarens tributaries and flooded some of them. High frequency turbidity data from in-situ sensors installed in Sagån, Hågaån and Fyrisån, three tributaries to Lake Mälaren, was used to study the effects of the heavy rains on their waterflow and estimated phosphorus transport. The results showed a significant correlation between increased water flow and increased phosphorus transport, a significant increase in 2023 compared to 2018-2022 and significant differences between the tributaries. Flooded Sagån had extremely high peaks in estimated phosphorus transport. The results indicate that the eutrophication problems in Lake Mälaren may worsen in a future climate with more intense downpours unless measures are taken to strengthen the catchment's ability to handle large amounts of rainfall.

Smit, Elizabeth Ivy January 2014 (has links)
Suicide and suicidal attempts have increased over the years and the phenomenon is rapidly increasing countrywide. The rate in increase has not been happe•ning only internationally, but has unsettlingly noted to be rising in South Africa, too. Suicidal attempt has become one of the biggest social problems amongst the youths, and a problem that society has to grapple with. According to the media and statistics presented, the youth engage with destructive behavior and attempted suicide is rampant amongst Black adolescents. The young person imitates his peers and is constantly under pressure to do as the group does. Thus conformity and acceptance are the core words. The adolescent attempts suicide to solve problems. Various reasons are given for suicidal attempts and the youth names amongst others family problems, academic issues, relationship problems and so forth. In the attempt to take own life. different methods are used to commit suicide which range from overdosage, especially amongst females, to ingestion of harmful substances like bleach (clothes detergent) and hair products. Amongst males, more drastic actions in method of attempting suicide are used like hanging, gunshot and jumping from high places like bridges and buildings. There are also instances of self-inflicted burning (immolation) in some cases. Black youths have been found in recent years to engage in suicide and suicidal tendencies, whereas in previous years the tendency was almost non-existent. This calls for an investigation in Black adolescents' way of life and specifically in what their needs are. The latter is drawn from the profile presented; a task which was not easy as there exist little or no literature in this regard. This study should thus be seen as a precursor for further and more comprehensive and exclusive research especially on the social functioning of Blacks and their communities, in general. The results should be used to have sustainable school programmes aimed at the youth in general, but specifically those at risk and displaying destructive behaviour. / PhD (Social Work), North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2014
