Chained Thoughts Broken by Chains of Thought : An Analysis of the Narrative Style Used in Virginia Woolf's A Room of One's Own

Johansson, Ellen January 2006 (has links)
Abstract Chained Thoughts Broken by Chains of Thought An Analysis of the Narrative Style Used in Virginia Woolf’s A Room of One’s Own The purpose of this essay is to analyse the narrative style used in Virginia Woolf’s A Room of One’s Own in order to show in which ways it supports and reinforces the author’s arguments in her quest for a more equal society. One of the most prominent stylistic means applied by Woolf is her ‘train of thought’, linking one reflection to another like wagons in a railway convoy or like loops in a chain (therefore also sometimes referred to as ‘chain of thought’ in dictionaries). By examining how different rhetorical devices are applied within this train or chain of thought and in which ways these strategies are linked to the main elements of persuasion (ethos, pathos and logos) in Aristotelian Rhetoric, I have found that one of Woolf’s central themes - the resentment against confinement and the advocacy of androgyny or mixed-gendered thinking - is mirrored in her style. It reflects the author’s call to resist society’s restrictions by its unrestricted combination of different rhetorical strategies; this mixture of stylistic, partly gender-neutral devices helps her to create a common ground where she can reach and appeal to both genders in a very effective and innovative way, thus enabling her chain of thoughts to break some of our chained thoughts. Implementing data analysis and visualization into a SOA based architecture for AddTrack Enterprise 4G

Laurell, Björn Laurell January 2012 (has links)
Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) is an architectural approach designed to provide scalable, resuable, and extensible software by dividing the software into self-contained services. Online Analytical Processing (OLAP) is an approach for data management that supports resolving ad hoc and complex multidimensional analytical queries. In this thesis, a case study for adapting these two technologies to an existing off-board train diagnostics system, called AddTrackEnterprise, is presented. The thesis also present a proposal for how to visualize the data contained in this system, such that it accommodates the OLAP approach. The thesis outlines the study of the subject matter and of the implementation of software for AddTrack based on these approaches.

MIND-WANDERING – A Human Condition

Torberger, Fredrik January 2014 (has links)
Mind-wandering was until recently not a mainstream topic of research. The aim of this literature review is to present current views on the definition of mind-wandering and how the phenomenon is experienced. Furthermore, it gives an account of the implications of mind-wandering on cognitive performance, as well as its neurological correlates. In addition, the methods used to study mind-wandering are reviewed. The study of mind-wandering reveals a highly frequent phenomenon with practical consequences on a broad scale, both disruptive and supportive to goal-related behaviour and wellbeing in general. Originating from the default network, and its regions related to representations of self, memory, Theory of Mind, empathy and creativity, mind-wandering is hypothesized to be a function for planning one’s future life. Suggested further research concerns how mind-wandering can be countered, detected from the outside and whether it alters the physical feature of the brain.

Feuilletages mesurés et feuilletages transversalement affines / Measured foliations and affine foliations

Said, Ahmad 26 September 2013 (has links)
We study the affine foliations on a compact surface in both cases : with a boundary and without a boundary. We connect between several ways of constructing these foliations. These ways are the first return map, the affine interval exchange (for a foliation which is not necessarily orientable), the train tracks with broken measures, the gluing affine foliations on surface with boundary, and the measured foliation on the universal covering with covering translation acting in affine ways. We study the injectivity of the applications with image in the space of equivalence classes of affine foliations which result from these various constructions.

The capacity allocation process on the French railway network : how to accommodate freight demand ?

Morvant, Camille 20 November 2015 (has links)
In Europe, this issue lies within a process for which the infrastructure manager has to consider competing uses - passenger and freight trains as well as maintenance work - and several users of a scarce resource, infrastructure capacity. The aim of this research is to better understand the way this process is organised and works on the French rail network. We have chosen to tackle this issue focusing on freight as an activity which has been opened up to competition since 2006 but has experienced structural difficulties for decades. The various time aspects of the capacity allocation process are the key focus of our analysis. Our approach considers the perspectives of the infrastructure manager and of their customers, foremost among which are train operating companies. We highlight that freight occupies a unique place in this process which is based on a schedule resulting from both European regulations and the legacy of decisions taken at the national level. The issue of the quality of the train paths offered by the infrastructure manager is studied with a focus on the links between short and long term requirements with regard to the train running deadline. In spite of their diversity, we demonstrate that freight operators need flexibility and visibility. Finally, we analyse catalogue paths as a specific offer that aims to guarantee capacity for freight. The German method, through the neXt project, provides an alternative insight into this issue. Accommodating freight train paths into the timetable is essentially a necessary but delicate balance of interests: standardisation vs. customisation

The Edu-Train project and the reduction of prejudice

Connolly, Esme 14 April 2014 (has links)
M.Ed. / However much ideologically diffuse argument there may be about the purposes of education, few would deny that it plays an integral part in the political and economical processes of societies. For the realities of power and the organisation of socio-economic structure are perhaps nowhere more clearly revealed than in a country's educational institutions. Education can maintain the existing social order as well as promote varying kinds of change (Toffler, 1971). Social scientists accept that "education is perhaps the most directly effective socialising activity serving the interests of dominant establishments" (Schlemmer, 1986: 1). Its curricula is a means of inculcating the political values as well as the skills required in the system of control and production in society (Wellington, 1987: 6). Education takes place relatively unobtrusively in homogenous societies but in deeply divided societies, it can become the focus of intense and often violent conflict. "In South Africa education is failing badly in what modern education is supposed to do draw different groups or classes together (Schlemmer, 1986: Preface). Hanf (1980), in addition, argues that education can do little to solve conflict in divided societies. He stresses that the significance of education in some societies lies in its negative role as a focus of conflict. Access to and equality of education for different groups has indeed been at the source of very bitter conflict throughout the world...

No. of bitstreams: 1 Francisco Moraes Gomes.pdf: 3240990 bytes, checksum: 17659c72fed5b3faf44d712b20b24e39 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2017-06-23 / The aim of this research is to study the potential association between the reduction in electricity consumption in Line 2 – Green of the São Paulo Subway and the change of the Train Control System from the "fixed block" type to the "moving block" type. This study is necessary because the transport sector is one of the biggest consumers of energy and the energy is one of the highest costs of the metro system, so that any reduction must be studied and understood. Most of the previous studies published on energy efficiency at subways and trains are simulation studies, there is a few literature based on empirical data. The statistical approach was chosen because there is no installed equipment to directly measure this influence, since there are only measures of consumption at the entrances of the System and there is no individual measurement of each train. Part of the data used was obtained via official communication channels of the company, another part was obtained directly from the operational reports and other data was extracted from the capture of the communications between the trains and centralized control system. Several variables that can influence the consumption of the line and also the train speed profiles in the periods just before and after the System change have been verified. The study of the relationships among these variables was done and the multivariate regression analysis was performed. The results of the regression generated an equation model with significance for the variables: type of system, proportion of useof the fleets used and the number of trips made. In the regression process, the stepwise method was used and some variables were withdrawn when verifying that they had multicollinearity. The data extracted from the communication protocol were not used in the regression, but they did allow verifying an evidence of improvement in the speed profiles and also a reduction in the number of stops that the train made in the route, indicating a smaller interference between the train movements with the new system. The calculated savings obtained by the new system was around 2.8%, rising to about 7.8% on average when the new fleet was included, which only uses the "moving block" system.

EVENT BASED PREDICTIVE FAILURE DATA ANALYSIS OF RAILWAY OPERATIONAL DATA

Hric, Jan January 2020 (has links)
Predictive maintenance plays a major role in operational cost reduction in several industries and the railway industry is no exception. Predictive maintenance relies on real time data to predict and diagnose technical failures. Sensor data is usually utilized for this purpose, however it might not always be available. Events data are a potential substitute as a source of information which could be used to diagnose and predict failures. This thesis investigates the use of events data in the railway industry for failure diagnosis and prediction. The proposed approach turns this problem into a sequence classification task, where the data is transformed into a set of sequences which are used to train the machine learning algorithm. Long Short-Term Memory neural network is used as it has been successfully used in the past for sequence classification tasks. The prediction model is able to achieve high training accuracy, but it is at the moment unable to generalize the patterns and apply them on new sets of data. At the end of the thesis, the approach is evaluated and future steps are proposed to improve failure diagnosis and prediction.
