Simard, Myriam 04 1900 (has links)
When compared to parents of non-diagnosed children, parents of children with ADHD face a higher risk of experiencing parenting stress, depression, and family functioning problems. They also report lower levels of parental self-efficacy, and use more coercive or inadequate parental practices. Some evidence suggests that parental abilities training programs can help offset some of the risks associated with raising a child with ADHD. Changes in attitudes and parental practices are also associated with reductions in child ADHD symptoms. Parent training interventions therefore represent promising strategies for improving both parent and child outcomes. Nevertheless, the personal characteristics of parents can intervene with their ability to benefit from parental training. Few studies have examined how parental characteristics can influence program efficacy. The objective of the present study is to examine the bidirectional link between parental characteristics (depression, stress, self-efficacy) and parental practices within the context of a parent training program. Baseline parent self-efficacy predicted use of inconsistent discipline regardless of whether parents had followed the training program. Furthermore, baseline positive parental practices predicted parent self-efficacy, regardless of experimental condition.

The training of school governing bodies in the Free State Province: an education management perspective

Tsotetsi, Stephen Morena 30 November 2005 (has links)
The aim of the study was to investigate the training of school governing bodies in the Free State Province from an education management point of view. Since 1994 the South African government has adopted a number of policy documents aimed at democratizing education in the country. The transformation of education in the new South African context encompasses the idea of partnership in which participants - such as parents, educators, learners (in secondary schools) play an active role in taking decisions on behalf of the school. The State alone cannot control schools, but has to share its power with other stakeholders. However, this can only happen if participants in school governance are trained to have power and the capacity to decide on matters affecting their schools. Hence, training is the cornerstone of affirming governors in the execution of their roles and responsibilities. Since school governing bodies are composed of a cross section of people with different ideologies, expectations and levels of education - training is necessary to prepare then for co-operative governance. Without adequate and on-going in-service training, it is unlikely that school governing body members can make informed decisions. The empirical method, namely qualitative research, was successful in obtaining information from participants about the training offered to them. It also established how participants felt and thought about their experiences and perceptions about the training they received, whether it built capacity or not. A number of recommendations were made with regard to the research findings for stakeholders to note. / Educational Studies / D. Ed. (Comparative Education)

Teachers' experiences of implementing the curriculum and assessment policy statement (CAPS) in Grade 10 in selected schools at Ndwedwe in Durban

Mbatha, Mvikeleni Goodwill 03 1900 (has links)
The education ministry has introduced a number of important curriculum forms, including Curriculum 2005 (C2005) in 1998, the National Curriculum Statement (NCS) in 2002, and most recently, the Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statements (CAPS) in 2012 in Grade 10. The latter was aimed at replacing the NCS in order to improve the quality of teaching and learning. The need for replacement was necessitated by problems that teachers experienced concerning understanding and implementing various previous curriculum policies. The literature study and theoretical framework explored scholarly contributions that are relevant to CAPS implementation. The purpose of this study is to determine teachers‟ perceptions, and identify and clarify possible barriers relating to the implementation of CAPS in Grade 10 in selected schools at Ndwedwe in Durban. For sampling purposes, rural disadvantaged schools were selected to explore the knowledge and experiences teachers hold with regard to curriculum implementation. Exploratory qualitative research design was executed with a sample of purposively selected participants which constitute one Head of Department and two teachers from each of the five different schools. Data collection was facilitated by means of interviews. The findings revealed that teachers were at first eager to welcome and accept CAPS. Furthermore, this study indicated that some challenges emerged and impeded teachers from effectively implementing CAPS. The challenges experienced relate to resource shortages, teacher training, resistance to change, class size, lack of time, professional development, workload, administrative support, monitoring and language as a barrier ( on the part of the learners). The study argues that without proper infrastructure, schools can neither hope nor manage to successfully implement CAPS. Based on the findings from literature and interviews, teachers still need immediate assistance with CAPS related matters. Recommendations are made to teachers, head of departments, principals, subject advisors, DBE and parents to aid effective implementation of CAPS. / Curriculum and Instructional Studies / M. Ed. No. of bitstreams: 1 5134.pdf: 3904591 bytes, checksum: 196f7357f34d96d134a0ae6d9483aa8f (MD5) Previous issue date: 2013-03-05 / The literature has pointed to an increase in the incidence of children with visual impairments associated with neurological disorders and other disabilities, but the educational implications of the association of such impediments is considered a minor theme in the training of special education teachers. The present study aimed to develop and evaluate a collaborative consultation program in the field of visual impairment with a team of professionals of a special school for students with intellectual disabilities. The participants were the research/consultant, five teachers, two class assistants, a speech therapist, a physical therapist, a psychologist and an occupational therapist, plus 46 students with ages between 7 and 37 years. The study was carried out in three stages: preliminary step of conducting ethical procedures; Study-1, the diagnosis of institutional conditions; and Study-2, the intervention. The latter involved: a) theoretical training of 35 hours of lessons; b) practice based on case studies based on the development of a visual evaluation process of students, with the purpose of raising subsidies for educational planning and to apply the theoretical knowledge in practice; and c) final evaluation of the consultation/training program. The results of student s characterization showed that 30.4% were diagnosed with cerebral palsy; 30.4% with intellectual disabilities; 19.6% with Down syndrome, and 19.6% with other diagnoses. 83% of the students have already been through ophthalmological inspection with an average age of 4.2 years in first query. Two students were diagnosed with optic nerve atrophy and congenital cataracts, which was not reported by the parents to the school. As for the observation of visual difficulties, the parents have made 11 references, whereas the professionals made only 3. The results of the evaluation process of visual changes, duly complemented by medical information, were: 16 students (34.8%) showed no detected changes; 20 (43.5%) with minor changes (strabismus, refraction errors); 3 (6.5%) with visual impairment of ocular origin; 3 (6.5%) with cortical visual impairment; 1 (2.1%) with ocular and cortical visual impairment; and 3 (6.5%) with suspicion of visual impairment. The visual impairment was predominant among the cases of cerebral palsy. The case studies resulted in referrals to ophthalmological consultations, guidance to parents, propositions of pedagogical strategies, in addition the adjustment of materials and environment. The results concerning the evaluation of the collaborative consultation program showed that it was satisfactory regarding the professional development of the consultant and the consultees and regarding the possibilities of solving the addressed problem. The study highlights the need of ophthalmic and visual development assessment among students with intellectual and multiple disabilities and emphasizes the importance of collaborative practice between specialists, family and school professionals to an understanding of the problem of a student with visual impairment associated with intellectual or multiple disabilities. In addition, it suggests the need of a support network for teachers of special education, of generalist formation, what also includes teachers specialized in the visual impairment area, as well as other professionals with technical knowledge.

Fontaine, Guillaume 12 1900 (has links)
In industrialized countries such as Canada, chronic noncommunicable diseases such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease are the cause of most premature mortality. Unhealthy behaviors, such as smoking, have a major impact on the development of these diseases. Nurses can support patients in initiating and sustaining health behavior change through a motivational and collaborative approach called brief behavior change counseling (BBCC). However, studies highlight several barriers to nurses’ implementation of BBCC in hospitals, including lack of skills and unfavorable social norms. This thesis by articles presents the result of a study aiming to (1) develop a theory-based adaptive e-learning program on BBCC for the promotion of smoking cessation, the adoption of healthy eating habits and medication adherence (E_MOTIVA), and then (2) to evaluate its effect with nurses and nursing students in a randomized controlled trial (RCT) compared with a standardized e-learning program partially based on theory (E_MOTIVB). The E_MOTIVA program was developed following a systematic approach and informed by empirical data and theory, including the Theory of Planned Behavior, Cognitive Load Theory and the concept of engagement. The content of the E_MOTIVA program has been developed in such a way as to target the barriers and theoretical determinants of BBCC implementation in nurses and nursing students (e.g., attitude, subjective norms, knowledge, intention). The adaptation of the E_MOTIVA program was operationalized at different times during learning to optimize cognitive load and engagement in nurses and students. The E_MOTIVA program included three training sessions lasting respectively a maximum of 50, 60 and 20 minutes. It could be completed over the Internet from a smartphone, tablet or computer. We then conducted a two group, single blind, RCT with 102 nurses and students enrolled in a baccalaureate nursing program in Canada to evaluate the E_MOTIVA program (experimental group; n = 51) compared to the E_MOTIVB standardized e-learning program partially based on theory (control group; n = 51). The effect of the programs was assessed on: 1) change in intention to implement BBCC for promoting smoking cessation, adoption of healthy eating habits, and medication adherence (H1); 2) changes in the theoretical variables of the Theory of Planned Behavior (H2 to H7); 3) cognitive load (H8 to H10); and 4) experiential and behavioral engagement (H11, H12). Analyzes of covariance indicated no significant difference in the scores of change in intention to provide BBCC between the two study groups. However, the change in intention score was higher in the experimental group (10.22 ± 3.34) than in the control group (9.04 ± 2.80) (p = 0.787). There was also no significant difference between the two groups in the changes in the other variables of the Theory of Planned Behavior. In both groups, scores for intention (H1), attitude (H2), subjective norms (H3), perceived behavioral control (H4), behavioral beliefs (H5) and control beliefs (H7) all improved significantly between baseline and final measures. No significant difference was observed between groups in cognitive load and engagement. This study led to the development of a theory-based adaptive e-learning program (E_MOTIVA) on BBCC for nurses and nursing students. The results suggest that the E_MOTIVA and E_MOTIVB programs had similar positive effects in terms of intention to implement BBCC in nurses and students. Recommendations are made to guide future research towards the distinction between the theory-based approach and the adaptation process and to explore research avenues related to the transformation of the intention to provide BBCC into its actual provision in clinical practice.

Understanding The Role of Ableism in Higher Education

Vanessa Lynn LaRoche (17621220) 12 December 2023 (has links)

Institutions of higher education within the United States have not had a reputation of inclusivity. The discrimination and oppression of people with disabilities is an important topic of conversation within these educational spaces, not only to change the way that society thinks of disability on a whole, but to incite discussions surrounding the best ways to support students with disabilities and their educational goals. This paper will provide a deconstruction of what ableism is, how it impacts mental health and wellness and how it shows up within institutions of higher education. This paper will also provide details on a training course for higher education faculty members that provides practical applications of the ethical ways of creating a supportive learning environment for students with disabilities. This paper will explore how critical disability theory, the social model and some aspects of the medical model can be utilized to provide faculty and staff with the competency to understand and interact with students with disabilities in ways that not only support their learning but contribute to positive social change and the deconstruction of ableist actions.

A framework integrating non-linguistic subject(s) (DNL) in French and French for Specific Purposes (FSP)/French for Academic Purposes (FAP) courses in bi-multilingual French-language University Courses for success of allophone students

Bordo, Widiane 27 June 2016 (has links)
The economic globalization and internationalization of exchanges led to the opening of borders and professional mobility. As a result, new communication needs are emerging. Indeed, institutions, organizations, administrations and enterprises are nowadays recruiting professionals who can communicate in different languages during their workplace activities. To meet this demand, schools and universities have implemented bi-multilingual teaching. This thesis focuses on bi-multilingual French-language University Courses (FUF) and aims to analyze the framework including non-linguistic subject(s) (DNL) in French and French courses, which is intended to ensure the academic and professional success of allophone students. Thus, we conducted a field survey within the Economics courses of a FUF in Egypt so as to study the linguistic and teaching practices. Our research shows that the integration of French for Specific Purposes (FSP) and French for Academic Purposes (FAP) courses in the FUF’s academic program aims at student achievement. Furthermore, the results of our investigation led us to develop different tools which will enable French teachers to create FSP/FAP courses more easily. More specifically, it is the construction of a competency framework, the design of a training program and educational activities.
