This dissertation proposes the development of an analytical methodology for analysis of dynamic/transient performance of an induction generator connected to a bulk power system. The proposed method for studying the stability of induction machines is based on monitoring the internal voltage named E' since during the transient system, its magnitude may decrease and so causing degeneration of the transmission system capability, with consequent collapse of machine stability. Thus it is the analysis of transient performance of the machine by observing the variable that is actually the cause of instability. The analytical method was validated by means of digital simulations, in two system configurations: in the first case, no reactive support is considered, and the purpose is to analyse the machine transient stability itself. In the second, a reactive support is provided by means of the dynamic reactive compensation via SVC (Static Var Compensator). In this case, even in the presence of variable reactive compensator, the method of internal voltage proved to be able to properly assess new stability limits. The results so obtained lead to the indication that the proposed method results are accurate enough in order to evaluate the behavior of induction generators, connected to the power grid

Resener, Mariana January 2011 (has links)
The connection of generators in distribution systems, commonly called distributed generation, brings new technical issues that must be analyzed by the utilities, since protection and control devices, as well as techniques for system planning and operation optimizing consider radial systems, i.e. without the presence of generators. In the case of synchronous generators, it is known that the excitation systems can be equipped with means for automatic adjustment of voltage, reactive power or power factor, and three different control modes can be applied to synchronous generators: voltage regulation, reactive power or power factor regulation and reactive power or power factor control. It is also known that there is no consensus among the power distribution companies about which is the best control mode for use in these machines, and in most cases the excitation control strategy is defined by an operating agreement between the company and the energy producer that operates the distributed generator. In this context, this work aims to provide contributions about the transient stability of synchronous generators connected to distribution systems, evaluating the impacts that different control modes may result in different system operating conditions. The main analysis parameter is the critical clearing fault time, obtained through extensive simulations using real system data. The different system operating conditions considered in the simulations are: different control modes, variation of the power factor controller proportional gain, different operating points of the distributed generation, different system loadings and power generation.

[en] This dissertation deals with the problem of dynamic aggregation of voltage regulators of coherent generating units to calculate dynamic equivalents for power system transient stability studies. The methodology used to calculate coherencybased dynamic equivalents has three basic steps: the identification of the coherent groups of generating units, the static reduction of the external network and the dynamic aggregation of coherent generating unit models. The dynamic aggregation of a group of coherent generating units consists of the representation of this group by one or more equivalent generating units. The coherent generating units can be represented by different models of synchronous machine, voltage regulator, stabilizer, turbine and speed governor. There will be an equivalent model for each component of the generating unit. The linear parameters of the equivalent models are numerically adjusted using the Levenberg-Marquardt method in order to solve the multivariable optimization problem. The main objective is the determination of the best equivalent model for a given composition of voltage regulator models in a group of coherent generating units. The New England system is used to evaluate the dynamic performance of the equivalents. The voltage regulator models considered in this work are in the Brazilian electrical system stability database. The swing curves of the internal system generators obtained with the equivalent system are compared with those obtained with the simulation of the complete system.

Analýza provozu uzlu sítě po připojení jaderného bloku velkého výkonu / Grid Node Operation after Large Nuclear Unit Connection to the Grid

Prokop, Ondřej January 2016 (has links)
The thesis deals with the analysis of the grid node operation after the connection the nuclear unit. The aim of the master´s thesis is to describe the influence of network´s faults to a nuclear unit. Thesis is dealing with three fundamental problems. An influence of short circuits and power imbalance on the synchronous generator of nuclear power plant and its operation of the island network. The thesis is focused especially on the nuclear unit. However, in the case of any failure in the network, it´s necessary to check other units and their protections in the test system because unit failure could cause the disintegration of the power network. For the purposes of the simulation a test system of the power network has been developed. The test system was optimized in the LUG software, which is used to calculate the power network. Transient simulations are performed in the MODES software. Single faults are configured with scenarios. Results are generated into output files. Analysis of influence network´s faults on the synchronous generator of nuclear power plants. The ability of the synchronous generator to restore the primary steady state or hold the new steady state during changes in operating parameters of the network is one of the important parts of the safe and reliable operation of the power network. During the short circuit the damped transient actions occur. With the extension of the short circuit duration, the amplitude of the transient action increases. The risk of the stability loss of a synchronous generator increases. Therefore, the critical clearing time of a short circuit is being defined, which is the time when there is not any loss of stability. Critical clearing time of research generator is sufficient to turn off the short circuit with the help of its protection (the worst case is 0,8 s). For example, by comparison with the hydroelectric power plant, the critical clearing time is much longer. Models of other power plants have been designed with high reliability so in the case of these faults, it doesn’t cause the disintegration of the power network. Creation of island grid is characterized by strong current surges. Units must be resistant to these surges. In the island grid fast changes of the electrical parameters often occurs. Therefore, units must respond to these changes as quickly as possible and in the broadest limits. For this purpose an island operation regulator is being used. In the case of surplus island grid in steam power plants a dump condenser can be used. This is an important ability of steam power plants because the units are able to react quickly to changes of electrical parameters in island grid. The main result of this thesis is the behavior of the nuclear power plant during various faults in the power network. Researched generator of the nuclear power plant is highly stable against faults in the power network based on the findings. The results allow to continue in this topic with real network and real unit of nuclear power plant.

Simplified Model For Simulation of Fault Ride Through at Hydropower Units

Söderström, Sebastian January 2021 (has links)
As new requirements for grid connected generators were implemented, the requirements for evaluating the Fault Ride Through capabilities of the generators became stricter. When refurbishing a power unit, proof that the power unit meet the requirements must be submitted to the authorities. Performing simulations of the Fault Ride Through of a production unit is an extensive process and requires advanced simulation models and tools. Therefore, the need for a simplified tool for estimating the Fault Ride Through capability arose, which is what the project produced. Also, knowledge of which production module characteristics (such as the generator parameters, transformer and excitation system) have the largest effect on the Fault Ride Through time, would also be beneficial. Through the creation of Simulink simulation models of two hydropower stations and a sensitivity analysis of station parameters, the relative effect of the parameters on the Fault Ride Through time is estimated and implemented into a time independent Fault Ride Through time estimation tool, based on the Equal Area criterion. The purpose of the time-independent Fault Ride Through time estimation tool is to provide an insight into the approximate transient stability of the hydropower station and which parameters affect the performance the most. Simulations show that the transient reactance of the generator, the generator inertia, the transient time constant and the transformer inductance have the largest effect on the Fault Ride Through capability. The results show that a simplified tool cannot estimate the Fault Ride Through as accurately as a time-domain simulation model can.

Transient stability of high voltage AC-DC electric transmission systems / Stabilité transitoire des systèmes de transmission électrique haute tension AC-DC

Gonzalez-Torres, Juan Carlos 29 January 2019 (has links)
The new policy frameworks adopted by national authorities has encouraged the large scale-integration of Renewable Energy Systems (RES) into bulk power systems. The large-scale integration of RES will have consequences on the electricity transmission system as it is conceived today, since the transmission of bulk power over long distances could lead the existing transmission systems to work close to their limits, thus decreasing their dynamic security margins. Therefore more complex transmissions systems are needed.Under this scenario, HVDC transmission systems raise as the most attractive solution for the reinforcement and improvement of existing AC networks, not only using point-to-point configurations, but also in a Multi-Terminal configuration. The introduction of HVDC transmission systems will eventually result in a hybrid high voltage AC/DC power system, which requires to be analyzed as a unique system in order to understand the interactions between the AC network and the DC grid. This thesis addresses the transient stability analysis of hybrid AC/DC electric transmission systems. More in particular, two questions sought to be investigated: What is the impact of a DC contingency on AC transient stability? How can we take advantage of the of DC transmission systems as control inputs in order to enhance AC transient stability? In the first part of this work, the mathematical models of the hybrid AC/DC grid are described as well as the necessary tools for the analysis of the system taking into account its nonlinear nature. Then, a thorough analysis of transient stability of the power system in the particular case of a DC fault and the execution of the corresponding protection strategies is done. As a complement, stability indicators and tools for sizing future MTDC grids in order to respect the constraints of existing protection strategies are proposed. The second part of the thesis addresses the control proposals for the modulation of power references of the HVDC transmission systems with the purpose of transient stability enhancement of the surrounding AC system. Firstly, we focus our study in the nonlinear control of point-to-point HVDC links in hybrid corridors. Fast power compensation, injection of damping power and injection of synchronizing power are identified as the mechanisms through which HVDC systems can improve stability margins. Finally, a control strategy for transient stability enhancement via active power injections of an MTDC grid is proposed. Using communication between the stations, the proposed decentralized control injects damping and synchronizing power between each pair of converters using only measurements at the converters level. The proposed implementation allows to fully use the available headroom of the converters by dealing with power limits in a decentralized way.

Methods of Handling Missing Data in One Shot Response Based Power System Control

Dahal, Niraj 08 1900 (has links)
Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / The thesis extends the work done in [1] [2] by Rovnyak, et al. where the authors have described about transient event prediction and response based one shot control using decision trees trained and tested in a 176 bus model of WECC power system network. This thesis contains results from rigorous simulations performed to measure robustness of the existing one shot control subjected to missing PMU's data ranging from 0-10%. We can divide the thesis into two parts in which the first part includes understanding of the work done in [2] using another set of one-shot control combinations labelled as CC2 and the second part includes measuring their robustness while assuming missing PMU's data. Previous work from [2] involves use of decision trees for event detection based on different indices to classify a contingency as a 'Fault' or 'No fault' and another set of decision trees that decides either to actuate 'Control' or 'No control'. The actuation of control here means application of one-shot control combination to possibly bring the system to a new equilibrium point which would otherwise attain loss of synchronism. The work done in [2] also includes assessing performance of the one shot control without event detection. The thesis is organized as follows- Chapter 1 of the thesis highlights the effect of missing PMUs' data in a power system network and the need to address them appropriately. It also provides a general idea of transient stability and response of a transient fault in a power system. Chapter 2 forms the foundation of the thesis as it describes the work done in [1] [2] in detail. It describes the power system model used, contingencies set, and different indices used for decision trees. It also describes about the one shot control combination (CC1) deduced by Rovnyak, et.al. of which performance is later tested in this thesis assuming different missing data scenarios. In addition to CC1, the chapter also describes another set of control combination (CC2) whose performance is also tested assuming the same missing data scenarios. This chapter also explains about the control methodology used in [2]. Finally the performance metrics of the DTs are explained at the end of the chapter. These are the same performance metrics used in [2] to measure the robustness of the one shot control. Chapter 2 is thus more a literature review of previous work plus inclusion of few simulation results obtained from CC2 using exactly the same model and same control methodology. Chapter 3 describes different techniques of handling missing data from PMUs most of which have been used in and referred from different previous papers. Finally Chapter 4 presents the results and analysis of the simulation. The thesis is wrapped up explaining future enhancements and room for improvements.

A Multichoice Control Strategy for a VSC-HVdc

Latorre, Hector F. January 2008 (has links)
Utilization of power electronics based controllable systems (or devices) in transmission systems has opened new opportunities for the power industry to optimize utilization of the existing transmission systems, and at the same time to keep high system reliability and security. As a member of these controllable systems, Voltage Source Converters-based High Voltage direct current (VSC-HVdc) systems have the ability to rapidly control the transmitted active power, and also to independently exchange reactive power with transmissions systems. Therefore, VSC-HVdcs with a suitable control scheme can offer an alternative means to enhance transient stability, to improve power oscillations damping, and to provide voltage support. An interesting application of this system is the analysis of a power system when a VSC-HVdc is connected in parallel with ac transmission lines. This thesis presents the derivation of control strategies to damp power oscillations, to enhance the transient stability and to provide voltage support for a VSC-HVdc. The thesis also formulates a multichoice control strategy and its application when the VSC-HVdc is connected in a synchronous system. The control strategy for enhancing transient stability is based on the theory of Control Lyapunov Function. The control strategy for increasing the damping is based on Linear Analysis. A very effective well known way to increase damping in the system is modulating the active power through the HVdc. However, besides the control of active power, the thesis explores an alternative way to mitigate power oscillations by controlling the reactive power. This condition might be very useful when the dc link in the VSC-HVdc system is out of service, but the converter stations are in operating conditions. A simple model of VSC-HVdc is considered in order to test the control strategy. The model represents the VSC-HVdc as an element in the power system that provides adequate interaction with other systems elements. The model is intended for analysis of power flows and electromechanical transients. It is then sufficient to consider the power frequency components of voltages and currents represented by phasors that vary with time during transients. The model is valid for symmetrical conditions, i.e. positive sequence phasors are used for the representation of the electrical state. / QC 20101117
