In an attempt to discern the prevalence of British place-names with a Scandinavian origin this paper is a small linguistic study on place-names in Herefordshire, Cumbria and the areas along rivers Trent and Ouse. Based on modern maps place-names were included in the study. Older forms of the place-names were retrieved, and these old forms were analysed in order to understand the modern versions of the place-names. Place-name elements were grouped and their frequencies calculated in an attempt to understand the distribution of elements in each area. 1300 place-names were categorised based on their presumed origin, though some lacked the necessary information. Several place-names were given new possible derivations based on their categorisation and the elements they contained. Modern place-name elements/features hinting at a possibly Scandinavian place-name in the past were identified and described. Possible geographical patterns of Scandinavian place-names were found in central Herefordshire, in south-eastern Cumbria and in north-western Yorkshire. Possible implications of the place-names and their geographical concentrations were considered, yielding a hint on an area that might have been pivotal in the evolution of Old English. / I ett försök att urskilja utbredningen av brittiska ortnamn med ett skandinaviskt ursprung är denna uppsats en liten språkvetenskaplig studie av ortnamn i Herefordshire, Cumbria och längs floderna Trent och Ouse. Utifrån moderna kartor i en viss upplösning inkluderades alla synliga ortnamn i områdena. Äldre versioner av ortnamnen samlades in, och dessa gamla former analyserades i syfte att undersöka bakgrunden till de moderna ortnamnsvarianterna. Ortnamnens delar grupperades och deras frekvenser beräknades i syfte att förstå hur dessa fördelades i de olika områdena. 1300 ortnamn kategoriserades utifrån deras förmodade ursprung, men några ortnamn saknade den nödvändiga information undersökningen krävde. Flera ortnamn fick nya tänkbara betydelser baserat på den kategori de tilldelats och de ortnamnsdelar de innehöll. Moderna ortnamnsdelar som skulle kunna indikera en forntida nordisk ortnamnsvariant identifierades och beskrevs. Tänkbara geografiska nordiska ortnamnsmönster upptäcktes i centrala Herefordshire, i sydöstra Cumbria och i nordvästra Yorkshire. The Presentation of Incorruptibility: The <em>Praesentia</em> of the Female Saint

My dissertation inserts the incorruptible body into the discussion of image devotion and relic veneration that followed the Council of Trent’s (1545-1563) decrees concerning the use of images, which affirmed Thomas Aquinas’s position that worship is passed from representation to archetype. This is addressed in terms of the image and the relic within the same sacred space, primarily in the context of the chapels of S. Caterina de’ Vigri (1413-1463; canonized 1712) in Bologna and S. Maria Maddalena de’ Pazzi (1566-1607; canonized 1669) in Florence, where there were not only man-made representations of the saint, but also the whole and entire body of the saint herself. Bringing together an array of visual and textual materials including such objects as the presentation of the preserved body, hagiographies, altarpieces, votive images, and popular prints, I analyze the powerful physical presence (praesentia) of the incorruptible body in relation to the saint’s somatic miracles, the visual commemoration of those miracles at the shrine, and the ultimate transportation of this means of access to the divine when portable images moved away from the body. I analyze how and to what extent the presence of the saint was asserted through the intact corpse and through images of the relic body. By focusing on both the presentation of the incorruptible corpse itself and the visual and written representation of the female relic body in a variety of media, this study will analyze the reception of the powerful physical presence of the holy incorruptible body and its representations. I argue that praesentia is signified not only through the display of the relic body, but also through a synthesized emphasis on the incorruptible corpse as prototype, relic, and image.

Frei Bartolomeu dos Mártires, Arcebispo de Braga (1559-1582), bem como seus conflitos com as demais autoridades que poderiam interferir em sua jurisdição dentro da Arquidiocese: o Cabido da Sé, a Coroa, e, principalmente, o Tribunal do Santo Ofício português. Em 1559, Bartolomeu dos Mártires (O.P) tornou-se a cabeça da mais importante diocese do Reino e desenvolveu ali um modelo alternativo para lidar com delitos religiosos. Durante seu governo sobre Braga, ele parece ter tido uma relação complicada com qualquer instituição que desafiasse sua autoridade. Tal postura difere do que se costuma afirmar como o padrão das conexões entre bispos e o Santo Ofício, geralmente caracterizada pela complacência e cooperação. In 1559, Bartolomeu dos Mártires (O.P.) became the head of the most important diocese of the Realm and developed there an alternative way to deal with religious crimes. During his rule over Braga, he seems to have had a complicated relationship with any institution that defied his authority. This position was very different from what is often said to be the pattern of the connections between bishops and the Holy Office, generally characterized by compliance and cooperation. Through his writings, his action in the Council of Trent and especially the way he ruled his archbishopric, colliding with distinct powers to secure the assertion of his jurisdiction, Friar Bartolomeu dos Mártires became a distinguished character who can be extremely helpful to better understand the specific conception of Catholic Reformation that motivated the tridentine episcopate.

In this struggle between catholic and protestant flags in Brazilian soil, the Indians are considered as non-enemies of the Portuguese, but for being gentile, also of the very roman God that by means of the hero of this epic pursues their insertion through the Christian world.

The rhetoric of Southern identity: debating the shift from division to identification in the turn-of-the-century South

Recent debates as to the place of Old South symbols and institutions in the South of the new millennium are evidence of a changing order in the South. I examine -- from a rhetorical perspective informed by Kenneth Burke's theory of identification and division -- four debates that have taken place in the South and/or about the South over roughly the past decade, 1995 to the present. In this decade, Southerners and interested others have debated such issues as 1) admitting women to the Virginia Military Institute and the Citadel; 2) integrating displays of public art in Richmond to feature Confederates and African Americans side by side; 3) continuing to fly the Confederate battle flag in public spaces such as the South Carolina Capitol or including it in the designs of state flags such as those of Georgia and Mississippi; and 4) allowing Mississippi Senator Trent Lott, who seemed to speak out in support of the South's segregated past, to continue in his position of Senate leadership. Looking at each of these debates, it is clear that at issue in each is whether the ruling order of the South should continue to be one of division or whether that order should be supplanted by identification. Judging from the outcomes of the four debates analyzed here, the order of division seems to be waning just as the order of identification seems to be waxing in influence over the turn-of-the-millennium South. But a changing South is no less a distinctive, continuing South. I argue that a distinctive Southern culture based on a sense of order has existed and continues to exist amidst the larger American culture. If some form of "Southernism" is to continue as a distinctive mindset and way of life in the twenty-first century, Southerners will need to learn to strike a balance between their past, with its ruling order of division, and the present, with its ruling order of identification.

Le concile de Trente définit à la fin du XVI° siècle les principales réformes à entreprendre afin de restaurer l'image de l'Église. Une nouvelle approche structurelle et humaine est ainsi promue pour répondre aux critiques des protestants et de certains catholiques. La reconquête de la confiance des fidèles par l'Église se traduit par une modernisation et l'instauration de structures ecclésiastiques locales. La formation et l'apprentissage sont placés au centre de la politique menée par la curie romaine et les épiscopats locaux. Ces principes sont soutenus par la résurgence et la fondation de nouvelles compagnies religieuses ou associations laïques, répondant aux besoins quotidiens des populations. Le processus d'évangélisation passe également par la diffusion d'une nouvelle forme d'art capable de susciter un sentiment de grandeur et de richesse. Le baroque s'affirme comme un outil pédagogique indispensable dont les traces, encore actuelles, attestent de la magnificence. Le renouveau du message catholique, suite au concile de Trente, connaît cependant une application relative selon les territoires. Il apparaît à cet égard intéressant d'étudier l'impact de cette contre-Réforme sur la manière de vivre sa foi au sein de trois espaces liés d'un point de vue culturel et géographique que sont la Corse, Gênes et le comté de Nice. / The council of Trent held at the end of the 16th century embodies main reforms to carry out in order to restore the Church’s image. A new structural and human approach is put forward in response to the critics addressed by Protestants and some Catholics. The regaining of the faithful’s trust, wanted by the Church, has led to a modernization and to the creation of local ecclesiastic structures. Training and learning have been put at the center of the policy conducted by the roman Curia and local episcopacies. This principles are supported by the renewal or the creation, of both religious societies and non-religious associations, able to meet the daily requirements of populations. Process of evangelization also goes through spreading of a new type of art, fostering a sense of glory and wealth. By doing so, the baroque asserts itself as a necessary educational tool, traces of which remain present until today and bear witness to its magnificence. However, the renewed catholic message, after the council of Trent, was not put in application equally in all the provinces. In this regard, it is interesting to study the impact of this counter-reformation on the way to live out is faith in this three culturally and geographically linked areas that are Corsica, Genoa and the county of Nice.

Thesis presents diocesan clergy reformed by the Council of Trent in a way of historical- liturgical probe: requirements set on secular clergy and external expression of these demands with the clerical dress - cassock. The work knowingly preserves historical and theological planes: firstly it brings basic points for institution of the sacrament of priesthood (Levitical priesthood of the Old Testament, priesthood of the New Covenant and its further rethinking), then it comes with contextual establishment of the Council of Trent (convening, process, discussed themes, follow-up reception of the Council decrees) and its results mainly in a relation to the clergy (theological grasp of the clergy). The thesis subsequently outlines position of the clergymen as a state, upon which society and country put certain clearly defined requirements. The treatise itself then shows individual demands lain on clergymen from the Church reformed by Tridentinum (formation in seminary, self conception of the clergy). All these specific demands are reflected in a stringently designed form of the clerical clothing meant for everyday wear. Investing in Acts: Apostolic Imagery from the Pauline Chapel and Beyond (1542-1585)

Papal primacy rests on a single line of scripture: Matthew 16:18, “You are Peter and on this rock I will build my church.” The question of whether or not Christ vested the full authority of the Christian Church to Peter alone allowed secular rulers and reformers alike to dispute the legitimacy of the papal institution. In the period leading up to the opening of the Council of Trent, papal primacy became a fundamental concern. Popes claimed that any threat to their plenitudo potestatis jeopardized the unity of the faith, while their opponents saw it as the main hurdle towards religious and civic autonomy. During this time, a series of ongoing papal commissions beginning with Paul III Farnese (1534-1549) and continuing through the pontificate of Gregory XIII Boncompagni (1572-1585) sourced pictorial content from the Acts of the Apostles and the Life of Peter. These pontiffs were able to legitimize and bolster their authority by investing in Petrine and Pauline imagery that promoted the Apostolic identity of the church at a crucial turning point when the very definition of doctrine was intensely debated. This project traces how a coherent and consistent program for leveraging cultural capital emerged across five decorative programs within the Apostolic Palace: the Pauline Chapel (1542-45/1573-76/1580-85), the Casino of Pius IV (1562-63), a previously unknown series of frescoes for the landings of the palace staircases (1572), the second loggia (c. 1574/75), and the area above the portico of Saint Peter’s Basilica (c. 1575/76). Over the course of forty years, the papacy employed artists such as Michelangelo Buonarroti, Perino del Vaga, Giorgio Vasari, Lorenzo Sabbatini, Federico Zuccaro, and many others to visually concretize these Apostolic-focused narratives. Besides painted programs, the larger visual strategy capitalized on a broader scope of media. This included cope decorations, carved marble reliefs, and papal medals, which helped circulate and solidify the thematic typological associations between the Apostolic age and the Tridentine era. By the end of the sixteenth century, the systematic development of the papacy’s Apostolic identity had taken such a firm hold that it continued with Clement VIII Aldobrandini (1592-1605) in the altarpieces chosen for the small nave of new St. Peter’s Basilica, and with Paul V Borghese (1605-1621) at his eponymously named Pauline Chapel. What emerges from this analysis is the collective organization of a papal identity built around the lived and witnessed experience of the disciples that predates the full expression of a Counter-Reformation ideology. / Art History
