Variability and stability in the rank relations of female Formosan macaques (Macaca cyclopis) at Mt. Longevity, Taiwan

Chung, Chia-wen 15 August 2008 (has links)
Adult female Formosan macaques were observed to collect data on the acquisition and stabilization of ranking, troop fission and to compare the female ranking system and nepotistic hierarchy. Behavioral observations were recorded from 1 October 2006 to 30 April 2008. Behavioral sampling methods included scan sampling of macaque troop members, all occurrences sampling of adult females¡¦ affiliative behaviors, and focal animal sampling of aggressive behaviors. In addition, demographic and ranking records were collected from 1998 until 2008. When females attained four years of age, they gained adult female hierarchy, and 88 % (n = 43) of them were middle or low ranking. Individual traits, ageing and mother¡¦s relative rank have significant effects on the ranking of adult females who were 5 to 11 years of age (P < 0.05), and the ranking of 47 % (n = 58) mothers were close to their daughters. When females were 5 to 11 years of age, their relative ranks had positive linear relationships to their mother¡¦s relative rank (P < 0.05). Maternal hierarchy affected the ranking of reminders in troop C, and the dominance matrilineal females stabilized high ranking. But, most subordinate matrilineal females were middle or low ranking. The ranking of 86.4 % (n = 22) of females who immigrated to branch troops was middle or low. Matrilineal members and the ranking before troop fission had effects on the female ranking after troop fission. The ranking of 59.4 % (n = 32) of mothers was higher than that of their daughter. When females reached 9 years old or older while their mothers were alive, mean relative rank of other matrilineal female and mother¡¦s relative rank had significant effects on their ranking (P < 0.05). However, individual traits, mean relative rank of other matrilineal female, ageing, and the number of adult daughters have significant iv effects on female ranking (P < 0.05). When females were 9 to 15 years of age, the rank maintaining ratio of female with mature daughter was 0.82 (¡Ó 0.12), which is significant higher than the ratio of female without mature daughter (P < 0.05). About 50 % (n = 18) of younger sisters outranked their older sisters. The ranking relationships of sister dyads had positive linear relationships (P < 0.05). The proximity index of mother and younger sister was significantly higher than the proximity index of mother and older sister (P < 0.05), but that is independent of whether females outrank their sister or not. Only 4 % (n = 423) female aggression data were recorded that 13 supporters helped attackers to attack victims. The kin and non-kin supporter were 46.1 % and 53.9 % respectively (n = 13). Maternal hierarchy affected the adult female ranking and half of the females outranked their older sisters. However, daughters could also outrank mothers. Therefore, female ranking system of Formosan macaques follows a weakly nepotistic hierarchy. The Mansfield Amendments and the U.S. commitment in Europe, 1966-1975 / Mansfield Amendments and the United States commitment in Europe, 1966-1975

Lazar, Peter 06 1900 (has links)
Approved for public release, distribution is unlimited / This thesis explores international and domestic factors that constitute continuities in U.S. foreign and security policy regarding trans-Atlantic relations. Since the founding of the Atlantic Alliance burden sharing has been one of the major sources of conflict between the United States and its European NATO allies. Despite the reluctance to spend more than minimal amounts on military capabilities in most European NATO countries the issue did not become a major concern in the U.S. Congress between 1951 and 1966. It was only in the late 1960s and early 1970s that proposals - including the Mansfield Resolutions and Amendments - were introduced in the Senate calling for a substantial reduction in the number of U.S. troops in Europe. The debates provoked by these proposals threw light on the various determinants of U.S. policy towards Europe. The contemporary relevance of the issue resides in the fact that most of the elements responsible for the emergence of the Mansfield Amendments are still influential in U.S. foreign and security policy. This circumstance might lead to comparable proposals and debates in the near future. / Civilian, Hungarian Ministry of Defense

No. of bitstreams: 1 Giovane Albino Silva.pdf: 1981675 bytes, checksum: 34249eb9644d0af6e104dc2e1891b212 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2015-03-24 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES / The main goal of this paper is analyse the reasons which encouraged the desertion of soldiers in the regular troops of Pernambuco Captainship in between 1774-1808. The difficulties from the recruits’ evasion reverberate on the documents which were exchanged among colonial administrators, in which the information show the concerns towards the escape of soldiers. Published notices in the Captainship aimed to threaten the ones who disobeyed that conduct, predicting since the prison of family members until the fugitive’s death, in order to decrease the massive desertions in the army. We analyse Pernambuco governors’ reports, especially letters and missives which were sent to the ultramarine advisors, aiming to clarify the ways by which they tried to explain the escapes, besides understanding the numerous alternatives used to hinder their spread. We have focused essentially on the military maps which had been built since the second half of the 18th century, in which the cases of prisoners sentenced for desertion were pointed out and contain important data for the research, such as the penalties and pardons given to the fugitives. The observation of strategies to establish ways of surviving in the society was based on the analyses of three inquiries, which offer clues and possibilities of those men’s social insertion in the villages and colonial cities. Therefore, we seek to contribute for the understanding of one of the main difficulties that bothered the regular troops during the colonial period as a result of the aversion to the military service and the resistance promoted to the activities in the army.

Nkounkou-Ngongo, Estelle Inès January 2007 (has links)
The objectives of this study are: (1) To analyse the legal framework of peacekeeping operations to determine its strengths and weakness in addressing the issue of SEA (Sexual Exploitation and Sexual Abuse, (2) To determine whether the UN’s present accountability mechanism can adequately support protection of children’s rights in peacekeeping operations and (3) To explore the question of prosecution as a way to enhance the accountability mechanism in peacekeeping missions, particularly for TCC (Troop Contributing Countries). This study is mainly a non-empirical analysis of the UN (United Natrions) approach on SEA in its activities with a focus on peacekeeping missions. / Thesis (LLM (Human Rights and Democratisation in Africa)) -- University of Pretoria, 2007. / A Dissertation submitted to the Faculty of Law University of Pretoria, in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree Masters of Law (LLM in Human Rights and Democratisation in Africa). Foreign Aid And Peacekeeping : A quantitative study on peacekeeping contributions between 1990-2019,evaluating the link between ODA and troop contributions

Malik, Qadir January 2023 (has links)
This thesis considers whether donor countries that contribute with foreign aid to a recipientcountry also contribute with peacekeeping troops. The question is premised on the idea thatforeign aid serves as a proxy for national interest. Employing rigorous regression analysis witha high-dimensional fixed effects linear estimator, the study analyses a comprehensive datasetof country dyads that covers 30 year (1990-2019) and comprises 157 donor/origin countriesand 43 recipient/destination countries. I find a positive and significant relationship betweenforeign aid and troop, indicating that that sending foreign aid to a country is positivelyassociated with an increase in sending peacekeeping troops to that country.
